Adversity Builds Character (But I Prefer the View from the Top)

Chairman,

My greatest respect is for people who have experienced adversity and then come back. I was one of those people, in the early nineties. I went through a tough period and learned a lot about myself, and then came back bigger and better and stronger. It wasn't unlike what happened to Frank Sinatra in the early fifties. Like me, he lost focus. He took his eye off the ball and he made some bad decisions. (Also like me, it was the fairer sex that had a little something to do with his troubles, but that's another story for another time.)

There's a wonderful story in Sammy Davis, Jr.'s Yes I Can, where Sammy, who's on the way up (due in no small part to Sinatra's patronage), sees Frank walking down Broadway all by himself, looking utterly dejected. At the time, Frank was on the skids, having gone from being the biggest singer ever known to a laughingstock, reduced to singing novelty songs.

It's a familiar scenario to me, because one night at 3am, when I was more than $9 billion in debt, I was summoned to Citibank for a conference call with a bevy of international bankers to whom I owed money. It was pouring rain and I couldn't get a cab, so I had to walk to the bank, 15 blocks from Trump Tower. By the time I got there I was soaked. I felt then like I had reached my lowest point. But we worked things out, and the rest, as they say is history. They also say it's darkest before the dawn. You know what I say: Never ever give up.

Sammy, Frank, and Donald: A triumvirate for the ages. Come fly with me, Mr. Trump, we'll soar above your gilded towers.

This is a secret to success I think, though I have not as of yet attained greatness. The bulldog mentality, the rainy downcasted, humility. I can sure relate to this. I am after the Silver Lining myself-thats why im here reading all this at 5AM and I didnt just get up for the day! You have role models or heroes that you admire-thats a key to success also. I like Batman for one. Not the goofey one either.

I have always used the old saying, when I get knocked down I always get up dust myself off and start again. This time will be different thanks to you. I will take your knowledge combined with my heart to start over. Thank you again. Your words of encouragement are what I needed to hear and live by.

AMEN!!!

Thanks for reminding me to never give up!

You never know who is reading these articles and how their life is, but it is a comforting story.

I have to ask, Do you or any of your companies own shares of Citi?

I have taken an extra walk around the block (or otherwise) (time permitting) to help build up endorphins, and relieve stress. This was sometimes before an interview or meeting. Of course I freshened up just prior to the event.

Thanks again for the personal experience and positive coaching.

Welcome to the club! When you find yourself flat on your face - or on the natural cushion life provided to soften the landing :) it may help to remind yourself life on earth could not exist without balance. Balance means Great men also often have great faults (even if only for an occassional moment). Our greatest strengths can become our greatest weaknesses when used in the wrong application. If you think of all the things that define you as attributes, sometimes it is easier to see that, like a hammer or screw driver, they are most effective when used for the right applications. Abilities are tools - not trophies.

I once hear it is the valleys that make the view from the peaks so exhilerating. If life were all peaks, we probably wouldn't even notice. When things are going good it is very easy to slip into an entitlement mindset to take our blessings for granted. Then, life usually provides us with a painful but usually much needed learning opportunity. This usually brings growth and strength, as long as we accept responsibility for where we found ourselves instead of placing blame on others. Then, we need to forgive ourselves and remind ourselves that nobody is perfect, and most people don't appreciate anyone who refuses to acknowledge ever making a mistake. Then it's time to find the lesson in the experience "Ouch, that hurt. Next time, I'm going to....."

I bet this experience brought real insight about who your real friends were! They were the ones that still gave you emotional support, while giving you a good swift much needed reality check.
