Chairman,

Trump

University

On a recent episode of The Apprentice, some people were surprised that I didn't fire Rebecca after a rather contentious meeting in the boardroom. Rebecca had broken her ankle the week before and set out to prove, despite her physical setback, that she was still capable of leading her team. She volunteered to be project manager, but unfortunately for her, the women's team failed.

There was a lot of finger pointing for the loss, and most of those fingers were aimed in Toral's direction. But instead of immediately picking Toral to return with her to the boardroom, Rebecca opted to let her return to the suite. Apparently, Toral had helped Rebecca with her ankle, and Rebecca held Toral in high esteem for her educational background (my alma mater, Wharton) and for her business background.

Even when I personally suggested that Rebecca reconsider, she remained steadfast in her decision. It was either a really stupid move or a really smart one. Fortunately, for Rebecca, there are few qualities I value more than loyalty.

When employees and employers, even coworkers, have a commitment to one another, everyone benefits. I have people who have been in business with me for decades. I reward their loyalty to the organization and to me. I know that they'll always be dedicated to what we're trying to accomplish. The reason I have so many loyal people in the Trump Organization is that the loyalty is reciprocated. A lot of companies feel that dedication is a one-way street, but I think that's an easy way to lose good, talented people.

In Rebecca's case, I was impressed by her steadfastness. (I still think she made a stupid decision, and I fired Toral the following week.) Nevertheless, I was moved by her dedication.

Dear Donald, I agree with you on the basis that Loyalty is the hightest virtue.

But I seem not to understand because you might sound as if you are compromising your own words. How come they are qualities you value more than loyalty? And why are you so precise about Rebecca? What's the instinct?

Loyality is one of the qualitys that I must say represent me the best. Another quality that represents me and I would like to test is my humbleness.

Mr. Trump I could not have said it, or done it better. Loyalty is very important to me as is integrity and doing my best always. Wow! your message and depth of understanding what makes an organization # 1 shows in your champion ways. Kudos! --Lucy Socha

This kind of moments are like rain drops in our life, when we are fully reflected. All those given moments through people and events , even war, have given me the possibility to remember my Cosmic inheritance.

Although I was surprised that Rebecca didn't get fired, I agree with The Donald. Loyalty is scarce these days, and Rebecca laid her own future on the line for Toral, standing her ground, unwavering to what everyone else says, even Mr. Trump. I could see that if not played out carefully, her loyalty could become her defeat.

Why did you fire Toral anyway if loyalty is so important? You should have fired the PM, she was responsible since she was your manager in charge.

Loyalty like trust is earned and in the case of the employer and employee relationship it is through respect, fairness and dedication. Mr. Trump, this blog triggers a very important memory that highlights the importance of this quality. It may have saved our lives! Either we accept loyalty as a cosmetic word or I think no-gain loyalty exist in this generation. A good example are the contestants at The Apprentice. They are applying to be Mr's Trump's Apprentice on Global TV with their current employers watching them on TV? Where is the loyalty to their employers? Loyalty has a price. Mr Trump is right to reward loyalty with $$$ and not with just a pat the back. Cheers!

I have to view loyalty from the other side of the equasion. I don't suppose you have ever stood as the employee rather than the employer so this may be a novel position from which to consider this concept. I too value loyalty and own it as a part of myself. But should there not be some amount of reciprocity in the employer/employee relationship? For the record, I've worked for six good and three lousy years for a very large law firm, and fifteen years for a variety of other employers. The change from good to lousy was spelled when the partnership gave control over to a COO. Profits increased significantly for the partners even as raises dropped to two percent or less annually for those who support their practices. Loyalty has become an arguable asset.

I agree 100% Chairman Donald Trump. Loyalty is the highest virtue. There are few people who can live

True loyality indeed. The T Man has good instincts in determing when this is real, or when it is used as an excuse. Something only learned on the streets. Your best decision yet! sg

Adding to my previous comment of 11/1/05: And good for you Chairman Donald Trump for rewarding Rebecca's unique (and potentially dangerous) decision. Not many CEO's woud have taken the disregarding of their suggestion to reconsider, especially on national TV, with such class and style. That episode of "The Apprentice" spoke volumes as to why the Trump Organization is successful and admired

A question on how best to deal with loyalty of a staff member of a sales team?He is reasonably new to the team,4months, who constantly asks for new euipment, etc.worth thousands of dollars Even though he has perfectly good ones now. We usually award effort after achievment and whilst he's doing well he hasn't made profit on his section yet? We've noticed his loyality is to self rather than the job or business. Other staff, say they are happy! It would be preferrable to try and re-train his thoughts, if that is possible?Suggestions/options/readings, please?

Re-train YOUR OWN thoughts towards what kind of employee You want!IMAGINE HIM/HER ,write down all characteristics and leave the rest to universe.
You will be surprised:-)Your mind is bigger then You know. You can move the mountains if You want,You can have a wonderful team, just imagine. The Universe is just a lovely thought of Creator.

Mr. Trump, I could not agree more. Loyalty in friendship, marriage and employment is a two way street. Sadly, many employers and as a result employees have lost that.

Perhaps loyalty might be expressed to each and every individual that chooses to be involved with an organization. Of course the capacity with which each individual is entrusted to be involved in that organozation will vary but no matter what a person's talents and skills and who they are there is something of great value within each individual.

Rather than discard these talents and skills or viewpoints of any of the individuals, the organization might be better served (and each person involved as well in that collective organization no matter at what capapcity) if the members of the organozation are encouraged to look to see the value in each and every person - working int he spirit of cooperation rather than competition.

The growth and value of the total organization most likely would grow exponentially beyond the imagination of perhaps any individual in this university at present including the founder and his well picked team.

thank you!

Walter

There is such a thing as misplaced loyalty.

The Highest Virtue could only be judged by those around you. Please do not fire anyone people. Our God has given us the best gift, laughter because it is the music of the soul. I do wish to share my life story/Trumpuniversity, but place me on the last on the list. By the way we do notice a fair non-complaning voice system. Iffen anyone is harmed we would only have ourselves to blame. Remember the old school it did teach us a lot and we really, really, have gone a long way. May His Blessing be in our endevavor!
