Baseball and Steroids

Baseball season is finally here and as great as it is to have the Yankees-- and everybody else--playing again, we just can't get away from all this steroid talk.

The other day I was listening to a sports show on the radio and they were talking about Barry Bonds and steroids. The caller was very adamant that he couldn't have cared less about steroids. All he wanted was to see is the long ball, and if steroids increase the long ball, then let it be. "Who cares?" he said.

For a second, I thought he had a point. Then I began to think about it and, really, the big problem is the youth who are watching these guys hitting 60 or 70 home runs every season. The real problem with steroids is how they affect the people watching, especially young people looking to be just like their heroes, whether it's Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, or so many others.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know something is happening in baseball. For many years, a baseball player was either washed up or declining by the age of 34 or 35. Now you have players in their late 30s becoming better than they were in their 20s.

So I was thinking about this fan calling in and saying that he just wants to see the long ball. I understand his feelings. He gets caught up in the excitement of the game, and there are few things more exciting in baseball than a home run.

But he also has to remember that the youth of the country are watching. And we don't want to have our young people all doped out on steroids because their heroes make it seem like that's okay.

My biggest problem with baseball is their feeling of being better than those that watch them play. Bull riders are forced to sign autographs for free. Not to mention it takes more guts to ride something that wants to kill you than hit a ball out of a stadium. Ma

If more people gave these kids the REAL dangers and downsides of steroids, and not just the positives, this might me a lesser problem. I hope it will be educated in the high schools at an early age.

Baseball players on steroids are like Donald Trump negotiating millions and even billions of dollars of bad loans and avoiding bankruptcy. It is not the norm and the youngsters watching the real estate either in real life, in Trump University or on TV get get the wrong impression and perhaps are encouraged to attempt to build an empire from the incorrect starting point. To really get things off the ground with a real estate empire such as Trump has at this point in time we might look more towards the efforts, struggles and processes that Fred Senior went through in order to be able to teach Donald Trump some of his basics - What is puzzling is how far off base from some of the predecessor's paths some of the decedents of various great empires go and what struggles they force their companies and employees and the economy in general to go . Here I am thinking in terms of the Ford Motor Company started

I agree Mr. Trump, Steroids are illegal and should not be used

With leadership comes the responsibility of the example we set. The more public you are, the greater your reach and power of influence. I also am concerned about the message coming across, but the long-term affect of those steroids is even more concerning to me. I believe that we also need to be more vigilant in high school atheletics with testing for drugs and steriod use. I work with youth, and learn many things through their conversations. A recent trend in our community was the use of Vicodin. Youth would go to the Dr. and get a RX for pain from an "atheletic injury" Then, they would take a few pills just prior to the game. This way, they could get knocked around harder without feeling pain. Somewhere along the line, we are missing the real purpose of sports which I think should be learning to compete with yourself while complimenting your team members skills - teamwork - good sportsmanship, the importance of developing your body along with your mind, and learning healthy ways to have fun, winning the game is important, but learning to lose with grace and the lessons you learn about yourself along the way are too.
