Advice you need today from Trump University's newest bootcamp course, Negotiate to Win: How to get what you want - - every time

Positive thinking is essential to success, yet so many people just don't have the persistence required to make it work for them. The reality is, most overnight success stories are no such thing. Just because you've heard of someone for the first time doesn't mean they haven't been working for 20 or 30 years or more to get where they are.

For example, The Apprentice became a big hit when it first aired, but I had over 30 years of experience to draw from in those boardroom scenes. It wasn't just a fluke thaYears of Experience Made The Apprentice a Successt I came across as someone who knew what he was doing. The fact that I was on television was new, but the rest wasn't particularly new to me. Business is business, whether it's being filmed or not. My business credentials and experience made up the back story to a show based on a high-stakes New York corporation.

How does positive attitude fit into the making of The Apprentice? First of all, I didn't say no when I was asked to do the show. I knew it was a risk, but I was positive about what might happen. If I had chosen to listen solely to the negatives about the endeavor, such as, "most new TV shows fail" or, "reality TV is on the way out" or, "you'll lose your credibility," and about 50 others, I never would have given the show a thought.

But instead, I chose a positive perspective. I asked myself the "what if" questions. What if it were a success? What if I enjoyed it? What if it proved to be enlightening? What if it brought The Trump Organization more of the recognition it deserved? What if the jobs provided to the winners proved to be a valuable stepping-stone to deserving individuals? I had a long list of positives to go along with the negatives.

I see myself as a cautious positive thinker. When I hear people saying that anything you want to do is possible, to me that's being childish or at least uninformed. Some things are not going to happen. For example, if I decided tomorrow that I wanted to win a gold medal at the Olympics as a swimmer, and I was sure I could because I was so positive about it, I'd need a shrink instead of a swim coach.

You need to be positive every day, but you need to be realistic too.

Only question I ask myself everyday is:"How can I serve humanity?"Every day I get answer and do that job:-)

Dam straight you would win that gold medal.

It would probably be wise to get a coach though for a least, well let's say one year.

Mr. Trump, excellent point, and well taken. Very likely that at times my positive energy may come across as be one of those people that feel anything is possible, but I do understand my personal limitations. As well when you think outside the box, I see limitations as only temporary, with technology increasing so rapidly, in time the laws of limitations get re-written. The Apprentice is an excellent show for more than just a entertainment value, for a business man there are so many hints to success, you only need to watch or sometimes read between the lines to find them. During the season I regularly watch and "listen" to the show twice in the same day to key in on these business lessons. Listening is something that I see many of your project managers not doing, every boardroom session there are constant suggestions to the PM of how to save his/her neck, unless the PM has totally failed the task themselves. It's amazing to see at times how lack luster of a performance and the level of seriousness that some candidates give this opportunity, leaving me to ask why did they apply for the position in the first place. I wasn't selected for LA, but there is always next season to submit another job application, and build an even more impressive portfolio of accomplishments. Thank you for taking a chance with "The Apprentice".

Interesting Mr. Trump. I'm going to have to ponder this a bit. There's some things I need to look at.

Very straightforward. Good post. In America, parents teach their kids to be positive and think great of themselves and that's good, BUT what many forget to teach is the "realistic approach".

Donald (respectfully), even though you seem to look like a person who thinks he can do anything and everything ... this is a great attitude when it's combined with realism and a bit of risk taking.
[-] Posted by Robin Scott on 07/20/2006 4:31 PM
Excellent balance in positivity as applied to life and business. In that same vein I also often hear, and often from you, "Do what you love to do". In a recent article on me in the Memphis Business Journal I was asked the question "Is it your philosophy to do what you love to do?"
[-] Posted by Richard Guyon on 07/20/2006 4:33 PM
Today's topic has been in the back of my mind all day, and the main reason for a second post. One excellent question to anyone who reads Mr. Trumps post; If you feel you have that "Positive Attitude", does it ever waver? Even in the face of what appears an impassable obstacle in your goal, do you strive on to overcome these issues to reach your final objective or do you give up trying? Very true to be realistic in your goals, but those that are within reach, and wealth being one of the easier of the bigger goals in life for anyone to work towards, do you take the quick attack approach or do you work late into the night and next morning every day, building an unbreakable footing to stand on. Personally I feel anything of great value in a monetary sense or personal benefit is worth the time and effort required. If it's handed to you on a silver platter, does it really hold as much value?

Mr. Trump this is an excellent subject and I agree with you most heartily. However I differ with you in one area or I should say I have an exception with you in one area. You said if you wanted to win a gold medal at the Olympics as a swimmer, and you were sure you could because you were so positive about it, I'd need a shrink instead of a swim coach. You're right. You would. The key words being "want to". Now, if for some reason you knew without a doubt that you were suppose to be at the Olympics on the swim team and you were going to win a gold medal, you would. The key words being "suppose to be" and "going to". There's a supernatural realm we live in and if for some reason it was meant to be, it will. Simply follow what you know. What you See. It may look like a miracle and end up being one. There may be a reason there that the average person is unaware of. It may not happen every day. But who's to say it couldn't? Or wouldn't? People who simply don't want it to? Me, I believe in miracles, but I'd need a coach for swimming. I started to learn to swim many years ago and never finished. But I never say never. Mr. Trump, in your business ventures have you ever gone up against something that had never been done before? What did YOU do? I love The Apprentice. It's an excellent show and I'm anxiously awaiting it's return. Of course this last season was a little strange. But I love it. I always look forward to it and if for some reason it's not on, I bum and then of course snap out of it and move on. It's going to be an exciting year. Reality TV is exciting in it's self. You never really know what's going to happen, so you must be on your toes at all times. Including spiritual toes. You're an excellent business man Sir and I've learned so much from you and I intend to learn more. You actually have increased my leadership skills immensily and I didn't have to pay for it. I've had many years of leadership in different arenas and simply watching your show has expanded my vision. I love to watch the applicants perform their tasks. I like to ponder how I would do the same. Then again I'm not under the scrutiny and time constraints the applicants are. Still, I'm not giving them excuses. I don't like excuses. excuses are a waste of time. I love the fast paced environment. I like to process how to get things done. If something doesn't work one way, then change it. The journey can be exciting but I love the finished product. Then on to something else. Of course you need a little down time to relax and think and then it's off again. I can get bored and if I get to bored, restless. So onward and upward. Keep it up. See ya.

Be positive but realistic is a very true statement but your analogy about winning a gold medal at the Olympics could be realistic if it took 20 years to get prepared for. My outlook is anything is possible if you have a niche for something and are determined to work hard at it plus time. You can be successful if you take calculated risk not just risk. If you just take risk the chances are better of failing than succeeding.

When I'm presented with a challenge or task in my business, I always say "I can do this", even if my first impression is unprintable. :) Why do I say that? Because the mind is the world's most powerful computer, and when I say I can do something, possibilities occur to me that would never have come to me if I said "I can't do that". Just as you can program a computer to succeed at a task, you can program your own mind to do so as well.

First of all Mr.Trump, I would like to say that you are my inspiration and this website is extremely fantastic and helpfull. I am 19 year old college-going student from Indonesia and for the past 1 year, I have been an utter failure who does nothing but waste my parents' money and hardwork. It is definitely nothing to be proud about and I only have myself to blame. But since the minute I read your website and watched The Apprentice, I should say that you have greatly inspired me to be a better person in life. I always keep my word and this much I will tell you that I will definitely improve myself and THE day I feel successful as a person and most importantly, an enterpreneur like yourself, you will be the first person whom I will visit to give my salutations. No one trusts me anymore. But I still believe that I will succeed and you are the main and only reason when that happens. Thank you again!
[-] Posted by O. on 07/21/2006 1:54 PM
But what is realistic and what is not? Nothing is really defined as realistic; you'll have to figure that one out for your self. To be really successful you'll need to define realistic a little wider than what is usually done.

Although -as most times - Mr. Trumps comments are very valid I would like to add one view point in this discussion. I believe that before using positive thinking as one mean to get better results, one should focus on learning his/ her own strengths and weaknesses. Especially weaknesses are something that people do not seem to really know in themselves when being interviewed for a job or for anything.

Mr. Trump knows he can not become an olympic athlete in his position and even age, but how many of us "regular Joe's" can really say we know our own limtations well enough? At least I dont!

I do agree to a point about the importance of "positive attitude." Where I disagree is what most people believe constitutes a positive attitude and how you cultivate it. As a business and leadership coach, as well as a Master NLP Practitioner, I have worked with hundreds of executives, CEOs and business owners in breaking through their limitations, especially in terms of their thinking. Most of one's negative thinking does not happen on the conscious level... rather on the unconscious level. Our unconscious mind drives 80% of our behaviors. So you can think all the positive thoughts you want on the conscious level and still achieve lousy results. I have studied the mindsets of some of the top business achievers (not Mr. Trump though :)) ... using the tools of NLP modeling ... and have identified their internal blueprint of what drives their mega-success. If you go to my site (www.EmpoweredBusiness.com) you will see examples of what I mean. My point is that there is more to creating powerful compelling results than just a "being positive." There is a reason why only a fraction of 1% of our population ever become wealthy, despite all the self-help, positive thinking books and seminars that people buy. Our brains -- more specifically our unconscious minds -- are powerful tools and most people don't know how to use them to tap into their own unlimited potential and achieve the "seemingly impossible" in life.

I am a believer in the power of focus and positive thinking. As Mr. Trump puts it...be realistic and positive. I have sold a company for $1.2M. Built one (1) LLC and (2) LLPs and no business professors every talked about this powerful concept. Positive thinking takes effort and concentration. I dropped out of graduate school to buy rental properties (own 15 houses) and everyone told me I was crazy. They are all negative thinkers. I am here to tell you that the only was is to WORK at being a positive thinker....and cut back on the nightly news as it is usually 90% negative...Thanks Donald for reminding us all to be positive thinkers. I have admired you show, real estate ventures and personal philosophies. I hope to meet you someday as you have always been a hero of mine...Being from Cincinnati/Dayton area...I think you had a presence there at one point. Best regards, Bob Calhoun

Staying positive is expecially hard when you know you have a service that people should be using, yet they don't want to listen since they unlike what you did for The Apprentice show...listen to the negatives without doing their research. The tide is turning and yes it has taken a positive attitude each and every day. I have found that being the "teacher" instead of pushing a service has given us much better results. We are experts in the field, but the field is new to most so teaching them the "positives" on energy conservation has really made a difference. I agree with you sometimes and others, well lets just say it is a constructive parting of the ways. Though, I feel you are an extremely good role model for executives across the board. Words-of-Wisdom for the masses.

WOW! Being in business is not an easy thing to do. My wife and I are both in the business of consulting and providng trainings. It takes alot of preparation in what is being said to the customers and many hours of studying and researching in developing quality and professional trainings which we provide. Mr. Trump you mentioned a comment on how individuals state that "Anything you want is possible", that is something that most of us wont be able to reach. Like you mentioned it is uninformed and kind of misleading when told to someone or even our own kids. I do believe if you work hard for something that you are good at the results will be very reachable. I have enjoyed your show and respect the way you conduct business decisions on the show.

At the age of 23, I have dived into real estate investing and I own my own business, Fireside Espresso! I heard it all from your gonna drive yourself to the ground, to your making the biggest mistake of your life. Given the fact that its stressful and sometimes emotional, I always take what Donald J. Trump says to the fullest. Did he give up when he was almost down and out? NO! Does he listen to the negative aspects of life? NO! I want to be the NXTRUMP, as my license plate says, so thank you Mr. Trump, and watch for me to one day build a Fireside Espresso in New York!

Thinking positive helps you see solutions to the problem and keeping positive will help creative thought flow out much more easily. An Olympic swimmer keeps positive because he believes he has trained harder and longer and with more discipline than anyone else. He goes into the competition with the positive attitude that he can win. He may, or may not win, but at least he didn't fail before he started. If you plan to fail, chances are you will. Nobody got to the top

Positive is great, but you have to be realistic also. You have to ask yourself how much am I willing to invest in this idea, in time, effort, and education. You may like the idea of being a doctor, but if you do not like sick people pick another line. Think!

I have always beleived, communication is the threshold to success. So, I've included this in my recent manuscript a simple narrative on successful selling techniques. I've stated in many a sales meeting, for every negative, there is a positive. Knowing and understanding the business you are involved with is critical to it's success.

I have enjoyed watching the Apprentice, and look forward to it's return this fall.

I enjoyed this entry, Mr. Trump, but I must admit my need to play makes me think that if you didn't need the shrink, you might at least need to quit playing that virtual reality game:)

I agree a good SWOT (Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis is a good way to make some decisions. If a great deal is at stake, that makes sense to me, but if I am faced with day to day risks, I imagine the worst case scenario then ask myself - "Can I live with that?" If I can, I take the risk. If I can't, I do something different.
