"Success is good. Success with significance is even better."

- Donald J. Trump

Sometimes we are so zealous to become successful that we forget about what is significant. The background for success should include some intrinsic values as well as monetary values. We should be aware of our culture and other cultures, our history and their history, and not live in what has been termed "a cultural vacuum." Someone once said that not knowing history was like being a leaf that didn't know it was part of a tree. That's an interesting visual and it applies to many people. We are individually responsible for our education, and that means whether you're in school or not.

If I sound tough on this subject, I am. I see no value whatsoever in believing ignorance to be an attribute. It isn't. It's good to start each day by saying to yourself, "What can I learn today that I didn't know before?" It opens you up to more information and net worth as an individual. Why live restricted lives due to lack of knowledge when there are so many resources available to us today?

Another interesting aspect of history is that it will lead us to seeing that we are all a part of it. History isn't just in the past, it's happening now. How can you know what you're a part of if you don't know what it is to begin with? As Pearl Buck said,

"If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday."

The world didn't start with your birth and it won't end with your death either. That doesn't mean you're not a part of the scheme of things. To the contrary, it means that you are.

Back to the leaf image. What if you know you are a leaf, but you're not sure what a tree is? I'd say the best thing to do is to find out what a tree is. It's pretty simple. It reminds me of an Apprentice task that's enough of a challenge to set the apprenti out to discover and research some things before they jump in to the task at hand.

I was listening to some Europeans once and they seemed to agree that Americans didn't seem to know their roots. Of course, their roots go back for many more centuries than ours, and may be easier to decipher, as many of us have ancestors from different countries. But it gave me reason to think about what they said and I realized in many cases they were right. I recently went to Scotland, as my mother's side of the family is of Scottish ancestry, and I've spent time studying that country and therefore my heritage. It could even explain why I love golf so much - it originated in Scotland.

I found that I enjoyed learning about Scotland and it has broadened my horizons, as well as my interests as a businessman. I am building a golf course in Scotland in Aberdeen that will be spectacular, and I very much enjoyed my visit and meeting the people from that culture and country. I also realized I still have a lot to learn, which will no doubt lead me into more interesting ventures as well as adventures.

Take my advice and never be a know-it-all. First of all, it's impossible to know everything, and second of all, it's just no fun, for you or anyone else. And third, you will be missing out on some great adventures. So remember to think big by expanding your horizons at the same time you're expanding your net worth. That's what significant success is about.

Ireland. You plan on building a golf course in Ireland anytime soon? Nothing like having the luck of the Irish behind you. Not that you need any luck of course.

I agree with "someone" who once said "that not knowing history was like beeing a leaf that didn't know it was part of a tree." Many times I remind my only child that as long as he thinks of himself as a young branch springing out of a healthy and fruitful tree which is his family, he has a better chance to grow up into a taller and more fruitful tree.

Let me share my life experience with Trump's blogger. In the past ten years, I always underestimate to my people, I always said that they are silly, lazy and so many bad words to them. Then I realize that I was so paranoid to them though I have long list of education. Suddenly, I realize that with my knowledge, I was not share my knowledge to them because suddenly I underestimate to them. Truly, this is very BAD! So I stir myself

Thats a profound and great article! Brilliant! We are all also citizens of the World and we are all connected somehow. It has been said that there is six degrees of separation from everyone: each person has a contact, who has a contact, who has a contact and so on. Hence it is good to know about other cultures.

Last year I began researching the Black History of North Carolina. What I found was a society which yearned for knowledge and achievement. North Carolina has numerous black colleges and universities which were founded in the late 1800's. These founders searched America for the financial support to build these institutions at a time in our nations history which made their efforts difficult and almost impossible.

All of these men and women spent time in the offices and tea rooms of our nation's wealthy while telling the story of how important education was for everyone, especially a race and culture which had just broken free from the chains of slavery.

Most of North Carolina's black colleges and universities still remain open and the original buildings are still in use. This is a true testament to the determination and ability of the founders and the students who have attended these schools.

My search into another culture has given me true stories of inspiration. It has given me the understanding of the roots of raw ambition and determination. It has helped me understand major accomplishments come from hard work and relying on others to help accomplish goals. It has taught me how to believe in a dream while putting the infrastructure of success into action. Basically, it has taught me I have not been taking advantage of my God given ability to achieve which God placed into us all.

Oh, Mr Trump, My Scottish Hero! Aye, lad!

When I heard way back that you were actually going to SCOTLAND to build a golf course, in my country, I was absolutely overawed. I know that this is going to be the best, most natural golf course on this planet!

Mr Trump, people are raving about this wonderful venture. I think it's the BEST thing to happen in Bonnie Scotland since William Wallace!!! (and that's going back some)

You couldn't have picked a better place which is so deep in SERIOUS and ANCIENT history here. Right from, the Picts, Druids, our own Braveheart, William Wallace, our wonderful Mary, Queen of Scots, etc, etc.

I have lived in AZ now for over 7 years and I love it.

But, as they say "back home" in SCOTLAND..."The lassie may have left SCOTLAND, but, SCOTLAND will never leave the lassie!!!"

My very best to you and to this exciting and phenomenal place you have picked right there in Aberdeenshire to most probably outclass "The Royal and Ancient St Andrew's Old Course" itself!

I can see it - in maybe 400 or 500 years from now, still being ..."The Donald Trump Golf Academy, SCOTLAND..."

My dear laddie...you have made this heart of mine yearn for and be so proud of my land...

...I also think that somewhere in that wonderful new golfing pasture should be the words of our wonderful poet, "Robert Burns"..."Should Auld Aquaintance be Forgot..."

You are so awesome...

Many people across the world are either ignorant of learning or are either paranoid of learning something new on a daily basis. How can you explain a European/American man/woman who doesn't even know that Africa is a continent that has many countries of diverse cultures? How can one claim to learn if he/she is ignorant of the tiniest issues affecting the world today. I support Mr. Trump of the need to learn because the culture of defeatism, just as ignorance can never be an attribute. DJ you're always my hero.

I am reminded of two old sayings right off the bat. 1.) If we do not learn from our history, then we are doomed to repeat it. 2.) I used to complain about not having any nice shoes, until I met a man without feet. Sometimes we just have to sit and look at things from someone else's perspective.
[-] Posted by Alaskasnowbird on 08/04/2006 9:19 AM
In order to know one's place in the scheme of things and how we relate, we need to know/understand our history. Having said that, knowledge is power but without wisdom is useless. We must understand our past and ensure we don't repeat same mistakes (personally, politically) because we must always strive to make things better and safer.
What's the definition of "insanity"? Doing the same things over and over expecting different results. If what we are doing is not working, then we must change what we are doing. Right? For example, when was the last time concrete absorbed water? When we over-develop natural areas to please ourselves, we cause ourselves harm. Lesson: Hurricane Katrina/NOLA.

History is good to learn from. We need to realize where we come from and what we are here to do. If our parents were in business and we are not, maybe we should check out going into business. We also inherit passions about things. So if you are not fulfilled, check out your relations and what they enjoyed doing.

Isn't it ironic that you go to school for an education, and the biggest lesson you gain is the understanding of how little you know. Learning how little of our brain's actual capacity we utilize is pretty humbling too.

You know, it isn't a bad thing to ask yourself the same thing at the end of the day as a reflection - what did I learn today? This whole entry was pure gold, and I love your quote. I too choose significance and positive impact. Why settle for mediocrity?
