Corporate Corruption: If You Have to Lie, Cheat, and Steal, You're Just Not Doing it Right

Recently former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski was convicted for stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the company. It was his second go-round in court--the first one ended in a mistrial. You may remember Mr. Kozlowski from the original trial. A video of his lavish party on an Italian island, allegedly paid for with company funds, was last year's high profile corporate scandal. The retrial was a more low-key affair, but it served to remind us of how much business corruption there has been over the past few years.

The people at the forefront of these squalid affairs give business a bad name. Maybe they're greedy, maybe they're "ethically challenged," but ultimately they're incompetent. If you have to lie, cheat, and steal, you're just not doing it right. My career is a model of tough, fair dealing and fantastic success--without shortcuts, without breaking the law.

Back to that video for a moment: For a couple weeks it was all over the news, so most people saw at least a snippet of this cinematic atrocity, including a giddy, red-faced Kozlowski dancing amid ice sculptures and costumed models posing as ancient Roman courtiers.

As I watched this public embarrassment over and over again, it made me realize that my biggest problem with Kozlowski wasn't the alleged corruption, but the lack of taste. The kind of buffoonery associated with this brand of corporate corruption is just distasteful and alien to me. While watching these high-level company officers cavorting on the shareholder's dime, it occurred to me that maybe tackiness is at the heart of corporate corruption.

Like I said, these people give business a bad name. They've served to associate it with scandal, untrustworthiness, greed, and bad taste. But, as I prove everyday, it doesn't have to be that way at all.

Mr. Trump, I'd just like to express my thanks for your incredibly insightful blog. It has answered many questions of mine relating to both business practice and running a successful university using non-traditional means. You are an inspiration to all of us.

Not to be thorny: but it isn't tackiness that's at the heart of corporate corruption, it's the human heart, which is effortlessly corrupt. Can you talk more about the ancient Roman courtiers and the giddy faced dancing?

The line between a drive to succeed and greed are often razor thin. It sounds as if Kozlowski was drunk on power as well as wine.

the togas, the naked ice sculptures -- the whole imperial Rome theme was ill conceived.

I think you've got some excellent points. I am pleased to see that this blog has started; we live in an age of information. Transparency and narrative from public figures can be useful tools and valuable assets.

Thomas Coughlin, Wal-Mart's former No. 2 executive, was forced to resign because of company accusations of theft. Coughlin was accused of requesting 51 Wal-Mart gift cards, each with a value of $100. He said he was going to give these cards to company "All Stars"--lower level employees who were recognized for superior performance--instead he used them for three 12-gauge shotguns, puppy chow, a Celine Dion CD, vodka, a fish license, a rifle case and a $3.54 Polish sausage (according to The Wall Street Journal).

Mr. Trump, I am refreshed to hear your thoughts on this corporate swine and can identify with your logic, myself being a hard working entrepreneur think that what has been exposed here is a severe disregard for not only business ethics, but the basic moral compass regarding as you say "the ability to do the right thing". Case in point Mr. Trump is you certainly know what is like to be associated with hundreds of millions of dollars and have been both up and down on the rollercoaster in business and yet you posses the moral compass to "do the right thing" not only with your companies and your employees but with your shareholders as well. These greedy corporate pigs and I call them that because that's exactly what they are, not because they have a lust for money (who doesn't) but because of the immoral and treasonous way they have obtained it are just a small example of a much larger problem, being that a lot of today's corporate leadership only cares about one thing…their own butts…not the companies, not the shareholders and certainly not the employees. Many of today's corporate leaders are grossly incompetent and are generously rewarded for their horrible performance, driving good companies into the ground and than parachuting themselves from the company with scandalous exit contracts worth untold millions of dollars. Mr. Trump you are one of the few business leaders who have the ability to set the precedent through leading

But, corruption is part of life.
You will find corrupt businessmen, politicians, cops....etc.
I wonder how hard it will be if I wanted to build business without making sure that, people in various places are happy!

Hi Donald,

Why so much emphasis on ethics. Is it because the public adores heroisms and role models?

Good to see you bloggin'

Another great blog Mr.Trump. This is a blog that is well worth reading.

Kozlowski and his wife's party on, other peoples money was the extreme end of tacky. Too many people in business are tacky no matter how much they're worth. You, on the other hand would still float with style if you were broke.

Love the blog. Looking forward to reading it all. Thank You.

Excellent point Mr. Trump as usual your insightfulness insprires me to forge ahead with my plans to become just like you. Greed kills this country, you have hit the nail on the head. If more individuals had you outlook on making money without greed or ego involved the world would be a better place. You sir should run for president.

THANK YOU! You are an influencial role model Mr. Trump! I nolonger feel like a rogue loner in this world of cutthroats!
You are truly more than anyone has ever acknowledged! And the TOUGH word fits perfectly with the issue of ETHICS! It is VERY TOUGH to hold to and succeed with! But, man-o-man it is well worth it! As for money-I think it is a tool to be used wisely and for good. There's no greed about it! I believe what the Bible says...the LOVE of money is the root of evil. Not talents themselves-I reference also, the Parable of the talents! I do NOT want to anger the Big Guy

I loved watching the Apprentice shows. The way you give your comments and come to the final decision is just very very inspirational.
You should run for President. You would make a swell US President and put America right in the eyes of the world!
We , the citizens of the world would like to see you run America! Can you do us all a favor? Run for the next American Presidency!

I must agree with your opinion that Kozlowski lacks good taste. He also lacks good sense. Good sense is generally learned from good parents. Kozlowski's parents failed miserably. Kozlowsky is an embarrasment to himself and his family. Kozlowski distastefully spent unethically "borrowed" money. Oh, wait. Ethics is also something learned at home. Mr. Trump, I'm sure you feel gratitude for the late Mr. Fred Trump, your mother, your grandparents, and your entire family. I'm certain that Mr. Fred Trump is the cornerstone to your foundation. What this world needs is parents that expect more from their children, and not from their government. A village? How about starting with one home?

Then on Thanksgiving Day 2005 you broadcast an Apprentice episode demonstrating the exact opposite. Why is it great for your Apprentice candidates to be dishorable but not for others. Where is the integrity Mr. Trump?

This is refreshing. I think the choice to act ethically or not boils down to strength of character or its lack. Thank you for yours.
