E-Learning Is the Future and the Future Is Now

If you ask 10 people to name the greatest business thinker of the last century, I am willing to bet that at least eight of them, and maybe all 10, will pick Peter Drucker.

There's a very good reason. Drucker invented the modern science of management in 1954 when he wrote The Practice of Management. When he later wrote The Effective Executive in 1965, he set the course for thousands of books about executive excellence that followed.

Drucker consistently anticipated the future - an ability that stayed with him undiminished until he passed away last year at the age of 95.

In the year 2000, Drucker predicted that the Internet would become the most important teaching tool of the 21st Century. You can read his prediction in the 2000 Forbes cover story, "Webucation is the Next Great Growth Opportunity." People are only now grasping his vision of electronic learning.

Let me share with you some of Drucker's reasons for believing that Internet-based education ("Webucation," to use his term) was poised to become the most powerful learning tool ever devised by mankind:

Every student enjoys the equivalent of a one-to-one teacher-student ratio.

  • The student can learn at any time, in any place.
  • Online learning is far more time-efficient and cost-efficient than classroom learning.
  • A student can replay the course material as often as needed until learning is complete.
  • Graphics, pictures and other resources make Webucation far more effective than classroom teaching.
  • Internet learning meets a critical need, since contemporary people can no longer afford to stop learning once they earn a degree. Webucation allows successful people to keep learning throughout their lives.

Six years later, Peter Drucker's prediction is coming true at Trump University and other institutions. We only need to listen to the words of a Trump University student like Pat Lathouris from Amityville, New York, who described online learning this way: "Trump University has so many advantages over other programs. The hands-on lessons are great. They simulate working situations in the real world. The online capabilities and the ability to access the courses from anywhere make learning time flexible - a huge advantage."

Peter Drucker was right, again. Online learning truly is the future - and the future is now.

Yes, I read about this in Drucker's book. And I believe the future is now! Stop to think too much about past time! Time is change, right?

I feel great with Trump Blogger, at least, I know what people's thought and I can share my thoughts too!

This is not a time for shy! This is a time to express our thoughts. Dont be afraid with mistakes!

Online learning have a huge advantage beside manual learning.

When knowledge is power, and E-Learning can virtually cover any topic, it's obvious the reasoning for the growth of this industry. A few years back I was involved in developing a CBT (computer based training) course that covered shipping dangerous goods. The keys to the success of the course was a good blend of audio, video, imagery, content and most of all interaction. Content must be accurate and easy to understand otherwise who is the student going to question. It is also a good idea to repeat points in different approaches to ensure the student fully comprehends the lesson. Again I must impress that Interaction or even Simple Visuals are very important. The reason being, a computer can deliver information non-stop and your students need a break. Even for an Informational Seminar even the best of public speakers take a break. A well designed CBT or WBT course will take this into account, and building into the course click exercises, or visual breaks, allows the student to absorb the information delivered to that point. The fact of using different methods to key in on a point really provides the student with a better understanding, something like what I've done in this reply.

I have attended numerous live events as well as taken a substantial number of online courses, webinars, and training classes. While the live events offer the real face-to-face networking opportunities not available with online courses, the online ones give you the ability to focus in smaller chunks.

Live seminars force you to stay 100% attentive, or you could miss a critical point or the big ah-hah moment that could make your business some big money.

My favorite benefit to online courses is the fact you can (usually) pause them or replay them as many times as you want. While I wish I had a photographic memory and audio recall, I find more than once is a necessity to permanently wire it into my own brain.

Great article here - it reminds me of some online audios I must listen to again!

I am a true believer in on-line learning. At the age of 50, I will be graduating with my BS Degree in Business Management/Healthcare Management from Kaplan University in January. I've started and quit college 6 times over the last 30 years. If it weren't for online learning, I would not have an Associates Degree in Computer Information Systems, nor would I be about to receive my Bachelor's, graduating Summa Cum Laude, in less than 4 months! Thank goodness for technology!

Being from a country that has built it's future on technology, especially ICT, I have had a privilege to utilise CBT type training already over a decade. Nokia had their CBT programmes running in the beginning of 1990's, and that caused, that many major corporations in Northern Europe built their own CBT programmes. In USA Integrated Control Systems IMPAC Inc. used CBT programmes from 1993. The interesting thing with those companies having longer experience with CBT or WBT is that lately they have turned back a bit and started combining couching with CBT.

With all respect to Druckers great visions, I would like to open discussion regarding the need for human touch in learning. CBT/ WBT is great way to get the message accross, but I think, that to support creativity and enhance each students personal development couching is vital for greater success. Naturally many trainers and couches don't believe in CBT/WBT since they have fears that new ways will threaten their income, and in some way probably do as well, but all developers should have open mind for change, which is why I would like to see some comments from colleaques around the globe again. Supporting one methodology should not refrain us from seeing the opportunities of others, unless our paradigms are too strong, so let's try to open openminded discussion in this forum!

I have to agree. With the global economy, many times I am working on projects around the world with people that I've never met. I believe having a background with online learning gives me an edge to making these teams work. I'll receive my MBA from University of Phoenix to three months. I think once more of us 'online learners' become a driving force in the establishment, the more online degrees will be accepted.

I am currently attending Keller Graduate School and I take online courses as well as use the Blackboard (online portion of the class) to complete my work. During last semester, I took an online course for one of my classes and I must admit, at first, I was not into taking online classes because I enjoyed the interaction with other students, but like someone said, it allows you to read and re-read the work and audio/visuals allows you to absorb the work because it is repeated. Plus you can do and take in what you need at your own pace, everyday or once a week depending on how well you absorb the work. In the classroom, you must rely on what you read from books if you miss a point from the teacher. Only because some professors don't like to repeat themselves; so in essence you must rely on what you read. In some cases what is in the books is not what the professor spoke about and you must pray that one of your classmates got what you had missed. All in all I enjoyed my class and am looking forward to taking another.

E-learning is likely to be the next big thing in education sector mainly because it is an efficient medium for the delivery of lectures.

It is attractive because students are able to learn at their own pace without leaving their front rooms. However its true effectiveness is still far from a proven fact.

Most students' learning experience is enhanced

Kudos to Peter Drucker for predicting the future of electronic education some 40 years after R. Buckminster Fuller had done the same.

Fuller invited education leaders to join him in a symposium called Education Automation which led to him publishing a book
