Teen Smoking

Just when it looked like teenagers finally got the message about how horrible smoking is, things are taking a turn for the worse. The steady decline in teen smoking in the country is at a standstill. About one in four high school students smokes.

For the longest time, teen smoking was dropping. All that anti-smoking advertising was paying off. Kids realized that not only was smoking no longer cool, but it also was a stupid, dangerous habit.

But now the progress has stopped. States are no longer spending a lot of money on anti-smoking campaigns. Meanwhile, tobacco companies have spent billions on cigarette price cuts to make them more attractive to teenagers. Kids are staying hooked.

I don't get it. Why do they smoke? It causes lung cancer. It causes heart disease. Can't they get that through their heads? The other thing. . . it's no longer cool to smoke. When I go out with people and I see them light up a cigarette, I actually feel sorry for them.

I can't stand smoking. I hate everything about it. If the most gorgeous woman in the world were to light up a cigarette, all of a sudden I wouldn't think she's very sexy anymore.

I'm lucky. I'm a non-smoker. I don't have to go through the pain of having to stop. But the fact is, when I see people light up a cigarette, I feel pity. So why can't we explain this to teenagers so they don't smoke? So they know how uncool it is.

Tell your kids all the facts, but most of all, tell them it's really uncool.

I totally agrees with you. It's a must STOP.

I fully agree. I was a light to medium smoker for about 4 years from around 18-22. I never gave into any sort of "peer pressure" to smoke when I was younger, but ended up trying it later on just because I was curious. I became somewhat addicted when I went to school and had a roomate that was a heavy full-time smoker. I began bumming cigarettes here and there, and before I knew it, I was buying and smoking my own....

I'm glad I quit when I did, I new I wasn't designed to be a smoker, come to think of it, no one is really. But you're absolutely right, smoking is so out of style. Or so yesterday, as I also like to say. I think that's the message that needs to be enforced to young people today, although if they have others around them that smoke, it's easy to eventually to fall under their influence, as I did.

I live in Vancouver, BC, and here, like many other metropolitian cities, smoking has long since been banned from restaurants, bars, etc. I think that makes a HUGE impact, I believe statistics have proven it. More cities and establishments need to follow suit to not only protect their employees, but their customers from themselves.

I suppose though, when you, and establishments, that more so better influences those that are of legal drinking age, as they are the ones that frequent such places. The problem with teens is, they're not quite there yet. They're hanging out in parks, malls, at friends houses, often with little to no supervision - these are the teens that will likely take up smoking as "something to do" or "something to try". Especially teen girls filled with insecurites, this nervous habit can be used as a sort of "armour" of defense, or something they think will help them loose weight. I suppose then you could blame it on the parents. If your teen doesn't have any source of healthy structure in their life, they will most likely get into trouble. It wasn't until after I quit ballet (not entirely

Good point! I sort of envy that there is so kind and cool entrepereur in the Untied States who always feel responsible for the kids and the society as an icon. And I am a chinese. There is far more serious teen smoking problem in china. And I am more worried about it than before because I am a father of a 5 year old boy now. I am a non-smoker too. I wish my kid never smokes. I've been wondering what I can do for it. Today I've got a great method from Mr. Trump which is to tell him how uncool smoking is . I think this method will work effectively because kids like to be cool.

Thank you! Mr. Trump. besides , I love your show ,The Apprentice.

Psssssst Hey guess what. Over here in Canada they have banned smoking in all public places. That's right bars, restaurants. Last I heard they aren't even letting prisoners smoke. Imagine all that extra time they will have to do.
[-] Posted by Up in Smoke on 08/14/2006 7:20 AM
Personally I'm content to just sit at home with a burger and fries.

However, I appreciate the No Smoking Enforcement in Public Places. I think people have cut down considerably as a result.

Finally the government is taking reasonable action for such a ridiculous, filthy habit costing the tax payers billions of dollars in health care.

We didn't come into the world smoking a cigarette or joint or whatever mood alterating substance is the preference. It would be a much better way to go out the same way we came in.

I could not agree with you more - smoking is not cool. I believe there are 2 reasons why kids (and adults) smoke:

1. People's self esteem in this country is at an all time low. People have no confidence in the stability of their jobs, they can't count on their churches to be there for them in the midst of either child molesting priests or money hungry preachers, their parents are working multiple jobs to pay for mortgages they can't afford, and they can't rely on the leadership of our government (our president continues to disappoint and people have no respect for him). Add to that the terror situation in the world and you have a recipe for disaster. It's no wonder why people smoke. And even worse, the use of "recreational drugs" continues to sky-rocket. Use of crystal meth is at an all time high - and NOT

For those who came up in the sixties you may recall the seemingly hopeless state of the world then.We came up believing the establishment had doomed the planet to nuclear war at any moment.I didn't think i would ever see 21 and many of my friends didn't.Party hearty cause' tomorrow we die!Smoking and everything else was acceptable and necessary to be cool. The age old deception will effect every generation to some degree. What a shame when our kids don't know to think for themselves and look at whats at the end of the road in whatever they consider doing.

As I write this, my father is still smoking even though he is dying of metastatic kidney cancer and congestive heart failure. Research shows that smoking is a direct contributor to kidney cancer. Dad is weak, confused, suffering from anemia due to the cancer consuming his red blood cells, he has a catheter because he has no strength to stand or walk, he barely has strength to eat - but he still wants cigarettes. This is a man who was a high school and college football player, and is only 70 years old. It's devastating to see him deteriorate due to this awful disease and to see him still smoking. He probably thought that smoking was cool when he started 50 years ago, and now he might not think it's cool, but he's addicted and dying so he no longer has a real choice. It's too late for him, but it isn't too late for young people who have the chance to quit this life-shortening habit.

I just saw something on tv about how Hollywood is trying to make smoking glamorous again. I guess they just can't come up with any new ideas for their pitiful movies...with all that technology brought to them in the early 1800's...they could have done great things, but all they did was figure out a way to exploit the masses...so pathetic of Holllywood!

Anywho,,,maybe to help with gas prices we should throw another tax on smokers...JUST AN IDEA!

If I think about smoking, I'll picture your face, and how disappointed you would be, if you saw me smoking. That's the beauty of you... you tell it like it is...make no bones about it! I agree, everytime a friends is looking for a light, a cigarette or the next chance to have a smoke - I explain: that 's exactly why I don't smoke! I refuse to let myself be a slave to having to find a lighter...or ask a stranger for a light....never mind the waste of money! I always say the only two people who should be smoking are hollywood actors and rockstars because they get paid to be cool - kind of an oxymoron but I hope you get the point.
Here in Toronto we have a zero tolerance 'no smoking' rule. There is no smoking allowed in public places that are indoors. What I hate about that is: everytime I enter or exit a mall, office building, etc., I have to walk-

A challenge to my fellow members of Trump University. Can we come up with an entrepreneurial idea that would discourage young people from smoking? Been trying to wrap my mind around this idea for a day now, and I can't come up with anything. It seems that young folks don't pay enough attention to anti-smoking messages from foundations, medical associations or governments. Is there another way to get the message to them? To somehow get young people involved in an entrepreneurial activity that would combat smoking?

I know people that never smoked or drank a day in their lives that are gone now. And here I am. The smoker lives on. I know that it will cut my life expectancy, but I can deal with not living those extra few years once I'm old and decrepit. It's a crazy world Don, and a person that quits smoking today can get hit

But why do people smoke! is it because they think it's cool? is it because they think it'll dull their appetite or calm their nerves, sorry dudes, I think that's all myths. Look at the teens who smoke and look at their backgrounds and the way they have been brought up... most of them come from 'rich' families where the parents are so 'busy' to indulge them in any formal discussion on growing up. To some extent, I believe smoking is anti-Christ, it stains your teeth and fingers, it makes your breath stink and the smell lingers on your clothes and hair. Smoking wont help you loose weight! Smoking just helps you deal with the withdrawal symptoms you feel because you are addicted to nicotine. Smoking doesn't relieve stress either. Honestly as DJ says, smoking makes you 10 times more likely to die early from a major heart attack or stroke

Yup, I do agree with Mr Trump's opinion about teen smoking! And I don't think the problem is the kids don't understand smoking will cause problems, but it is because tobacco is hard to quit when you get used to it, and I really think there is a giant business opportunity to develop a totally new product for teens to quit smoking, which will be profitable both for the corperation and the society......

Could you put a call in to the President and see if we could get some legislation passed to protect us from these idiots? I think health facilities would be a reasonable place to start some intelligent regulations.

While I was in college in Eastern North Carolina in a town known as the world's largest Tobacco market, I noticed the tobacco farmers and their children I attended school with never smoked cigarettes. Their lifestyle required hard physical work which smoking eventually inhibits. They never spoke badly of smoking but they certainly never smoked any cigarettes.

My favorite individual is a man who inherited his family's tobacco farm. He changed his primary crop to blueberry transplants and quickly became the largest blueberry transplant farmer in the world. He hates Tobacco and the health affects it inflicted of his family members who smoked. He has told me he would sell his farm and live in the city before he planted one tobacco seed.

This is a tough one. I have watched what smoking does to my patients and how it destroys their bodies slowly. The body has a wonderful capacity for tolerating most anything we do to it. This is somewhat of a choice but there is no doubt it is an addiction the tobacco companies are banking on it. The real problem is not so much that people choose to hurt themselves but what secondhand smoke does to those that try to be healthier. Children and elderly that are exposed to second hand smoke dont have a choice and unfortunately most smokers (not all) dont respect the rights of others. Keep smoking... its job security for many healthcare providers.

Sexy girls who smoke appeal to men who aren´t on the dominant side, but what´s the point of smoking when cannabis is illegal? If you are a parent, and you want to get your teen out of smoking, tell him that it is easier to get to sex for a non-smoker. The reason why he smokes is that somebody has told him the opposite.

Mr. Trump, I am 53 years old, and an ex-smoker. My dad lost 1/2 of his left lung and 2/3 of his right lung to cancer when he was 50 years old. I quit smoking "cold turkey" a few years ago after a bout with lung infection. I am now trying to wean myself off of snuff and chewing tobacco. I watch your program "The Apprentice" and in one of your previous series you had an apprentice who dipped snuff and quit during the show. I hope to be able to do the same thing because it's actually more dangerous than smoking. "Smokeless" tobacco is only a gun with a silencer, but a gun, nonetheless. I have all your books, and I recommend them to everybody I talk to in my business. While I understand that, as a reformed smoker, I can come across too "preachy" I don't mean to imply that you are doing the same. What needs to be done is to get back with our legislators and get them to rolling the ball again. When people are educated about the dangers of smoking, they are more apt to quit. Right now, my dad is 81 years old, and slowly dying in the hospital. He has given up on life and feels there is no more "quality" to it. A lot of that comes from the physical pain he is in right now due to his smoking when he was younger. For those who want to take a chance with smoking, they just might live to see a hundred. But they also might live in a lot of pain while doing it. So what's the trade off? Yes, we all have a credit card issued

Smoking cigarettes is just the tip of the iceberg. What about all the high school kids who are smoking pot? What about the illegal use of drugs that are being passed around like candy. Of three siblings and spouces, none smoke. Of next generation, four of six smoke. Why? We all wish we could 'stop' the children. One parent says the smoking is better than the threat from treated depression of her child. Given that alternative, I do not preach why not to smoke, I want that child to live long, and grow wiser. Medical report (on line) many depressed teens self-medicate with cigarettes. Next question: why such widespread depression?

As I guess you all know, the substances in a cigarette act chemically in the brain causing a dependency; a chemical-related dependency. This is the first barrier to overcome when you decide to stop smoking now.

The second barrier is an uncounscious emotional attachment the cigarette causes. For some people smoking is a stress reliever; for others the cigarette is a companion, a kind of a friend; and I bet there are thousands of other possible emotional roles people can assign to cigarettes.

When you overcome both barriers you have succeeded in stoping smoking.

Want 2 know why teens smoke?? Ask a teen. It's different for everyone. I started smoking in an "All Girl" private school bathroom at 15 when I lived in Mexico City. That's what my peers did. It was fun and it was cool. I stopped for a year without wanting to with Accupunture. I heard the "needles" helped with weight reduction but it killed my smoke craving instead. Wierd. I started smoking again..because "It was cool" and I enjoyed it. Everyone I knew smoked too. I didn't know it wasn't good for me until I started running out of breath while jogging (which became the new "COOL" thing to do) and climbing the stairs. I also started questioning my dependancy on nicotine when they banned it at my work place in the late 70's. I suddenly came to the conclusion that I was a slave to the "Cancer Taco".I was one of the ones you saw at the entrance of the buildings. I must have quit 1000 times. I didn't "Truly" quit until I fell in love with a handsome "Non smoker" . I was ashamed to admit I smoked and it became crazy to me to want to spend hours with him but at the same time I wanted him to leave so I could smoke. I mean...how NUTS is that?? So, LOVE made me quit. Now...as far as teens are concerned...I have an idea. Teens don't like to do the things grown ups do, so, why don't we slam gross pictures of old wrinkley smelly grey haired ADULTS on the internet with a cigarrette hanging out of there mouth and shock some crude reality into their psychie as to what they have in common with these ADULTS?? That outta give them a reality check they'd want to disconnect from. Tony Robbins calls it the "Pain for Pleasure" swoosh. It worked for this 14 year smoker!!

You are not alone Mr. Trump, I hate smoking and everything about it. I tried to figure out why people do this stupid thing. The ones who were honest admitted that lighting a cigarette keeps them to procrastinate what they really should be doing: academic work(in case of high school students), tasks( for TGIF people who have to leave the building and come back to work.) It's bad for them but it gives great advantage and less competition for people like you and I.
Also most of teenegers happened to be very week personalities, so they just follow the tribe. If Joe is smoking I should to...

I am an ex-smoker who smoked from age 16 until I found out I was pregnant at age 25. I quit because I believed that I had the right to do whatever to myself but I did not have the right to harm my child; That is for him to choose to do or not when he gets older.

I began, initially, because I felt I was under a lot of stress. A "friend" told me to smoke a cigarette and it would calm my nerves. I can't say that it calmed my nerves but it did give me a bit of a head rush and after a few puffs my entire body began feeling numb (just like my head and face feels like when alcohol is consumed). It was strange and different. Just like alcohol - I like the way it made me feel, so I continued. That is why I smoked. I can't speak for others.

As far as having a problem with society. I believe that today a lot of people have replaced their nicotine addiction with alcohol. I hear a bunch of people talking down about smokers but I don't hear as many people speak about what alcohol does. Many people believe that if you only drink beer then it is not the same as drinking alcohol. I say, alcohol is alcohol. If you have that nightly shot or beer it is no different than having a smoke break; You are still killing yourself.

Perhaps the solution is to teach kids, from kindergarden age, about other ways of dealing with stress. My favorites are karate & fencing. One more thing, most of the smokers I ran with and still know now are not rich. Most are low and middle class people. Most of them are not athletic, not above average intelligence and, in a lot of cases have self-esteem issues.

Well Donald,
Sadly it is one of the big negatives; the hidden bi-products of capitalism. Corporations operate almost with impunity. Why we have even made Corporations, enities entitled to the same rights and freedoms as a human being under the law. Ludicrous. Immagine give over a life sustaining natural resource like water to corporate greed. Next is what? the air we breath? Will i soon have to pay for clean safe water or be denied it? Big corporations push their products in sneaky and underhanded ways as well as conventional means and Big Tobacco is no exception. Ce la vie. Perhaps zero tolerance for students caught smoking in or off school grounds is appropriate. But myself? I feel that one of societies biggest problems is that we try to regulate human behavior in areas that should be non-starters. Like smoking, drinking, drug use and legislating mandatory use of helemts, seat belts, cellphone use. When like oh say obesity, there are and should be penalties, but not legal or legislative ones. We have taken too many inroads into personal freedoms and personal activity. We have become nations of the politically correct. It is bothersome to me.

Firstly: I do totally agree with the idea!
Secondly: My comment.
If we think how dangerous is smoking, probably the most number of people shall quit smoking. People who smoke they think that they look great when smoking and are very proud of it. Absolutely not!
Mathematically, smoking is damaging also non-smokers that are exposed to cigarette smoke. This means that except smokers, the other people who don't smoke are in trouble and exposed to the danger.
Conclusion: I do support this initiative/idea strongly Mr. Trump. It is a very human from a successful businessman like you.

People tell me it was when I was this person or that person. chancs are i believe no one is with the person you started smoking with. A very poor excuse. I think governments need to offer a encentive program like insurance companies. Why do insurance companies offer discounts they know smoking is no good.I have tried to sto-p smoking before ,have relatives pasted away due to this terrible habit .. MR. trump I have some of you books followed your aprentice show, your tough, but thats why you mean will, take care hope your family is fine looking forward to seeing you one day, sincere fan, student of yours, you really have a good scope on life. yourb a good man thats not because your rich or loaded, why is it that people judge people based on there total worth rather than just the person them selves? Would love to hear your comment , best regards, Rick Patrick.

While I do agree with your point I'm rather dissapointed with this week's "Inside Trump Tower". Let me explane. Every week you have provided useful articles/posts on business and such. Now all of a sudden you start talking about teen smoking - something you really dislike. Understandable. But I definitely do not agree that this is the time and place to talk about smoking teens. It really ain't. You of all people should understand it the best. Of course, it's Trump University and you are pretty much free to do everything you want here, but while I do have great respect for you, I do feel the need to express my honest opinion here. Take it as constructive criticism.

I read all the other comments and...it really looked like everyone just wanted to agree with you not express their own honest opinion about it. And while I can't say my opinion is the right one...this article/post does not belong here. It doesn't give anything to the reader, it's totally off-topic and it leaves an impression of a post full of hate.

Cheers
Siim

I am sure many share Mr Trump's sentiment for Teen Smokers.

The cost both to their health and pocket book is insurmountable however look down yonder and you will find CIL providing the writing on the wall.

Most smokers are embarassed to smoke. Is it their fault ?

By my estimation I don't believe it is. There are too many contributing factors.

Canada is leading the example to quit smoking by my perspective however at the same time why all this talk to legalize marjuanna ?

To protest one and not the other is where the team drops the ball. Moreover the medical profession has compromised its expenditure to such a degree that

nerve pills for women can be doled out like candy.

Take Nicole Smith as an example, no one had her back.
Not even Stern !

In the name of consumption what are we doing to people !*?

I'm 21, and I grew up around both of my grandparents. They have been smoking around me since I was a little girl. One day my grandma was taking me to church with her when she told me that God doesn't like it when we put something like smoking before Him. I asked her why she smokes. She told me she started when she was a teenager and smoking was still considered cool. She had been smoking so long that she can't quit. I started feeling sorry for her then. A few years ago, we became afraid that she had emphysema. Fortunately, it was a false alarm. I was lucky; I grew up seeing what my life could be if I get stupid enough to light up. I love my grandparents, and I hope someday they will find the strength to quit. I want them to live long enough to see me become successful, get married, and have a family of my own.

Where can I get anti-smoking posters and anti-tobacco educational materials for school going chain smokers? Teen smoking harms you internally.

What gets me is that it is still legal to sell tobacco products. I realize that has a lot to do with the lobbyists, but we know how harmful the stuff is - so why is it even legal?

Well as a teen who is almost 15 and smokes a pack every week or two, I can give you your answer. It is appealing because you tell me not to do it. In This nonsmoking world the easiest way to****off people is to light up in front of a nonsmoker. In addition there is self harm and the fact that we can do something unhealthy and that is appealing. When we are little are parents make us fill up on our vegetables so we don't eat a gallon of ice cream for desert and they make sure we don't eat a whole bag of candy and now there is not really much they can do. We do it because you say they only people who do it are hopeless addicts but then another article on the internet says that as many as 17% of smokers are just social smokers. I know that I like smoking and mentally I am very addicted as I think about cigarettes all the time but when I stop smoking abruptly ( like when I run out or am with my parents all day) I feel fine. In fact its true that smokers have more stress and I know it, when I haven't smoked in a day or two I feel calmer and my heart beats slower. So why do I always light up again? I am not quite sure but I think it is because there is something very mystical, fun, youthful, and appealing about smoking. I know that being addicted to anything is not fun because nothing is fun when its not a choice anymore, I know that smelling bad, having bad breath, and poor health is not appealing. But like I said there is some subliminal pleasure and attraction of smoking that people who never got into smoking doesn't understand. I realize that this is a nonsmoking world but I think there will be a limit and I don't think smoking rates will EVER be under 10%. And do you realize that the tax makes up an average of 50% of the price of a pack of cigarettes while manufacturer profits only make up 6% of the price. So who has more to lose?
