The Trump Flagpole

I recently went to war with the City Council in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, over - of all things - an American flag and a flagpole.

I have a 70-foot flagpole with a gorgeous American flag waving over my Trump National Golf Club. I thought it was the epitome of patriotism.

Apparently, some members of City Council thought otherwise. They tried to get me to take down the flag, saying it was too tall. When they voted on it, two of the five members of City Council actually voted against letting the flag fly.

Personally, I don't understand how they could do that. They were voting on taking down the American flag! That's rather anti-American.

The City Council received hundreds of emails from angry citizens - including war veterans - who were thrilled with the flag and wanted it to remain.

I'm obviously very happy with what happened in the end. It's a great day for the American flag and what it represents.

I think Mr.Trump spoke quite cynism and focus to extreme one! I choose to netral and everything depends on Trump's team to expand their business. I believe you have your own flag to wave. Nobody stop you, Mr.Trump! Do your business with your comfortable system! But please stay away with deceive business. My people needs win-win business! Good luck!

So, were they upset with the flag or the fact that it was so tall? Who cares? It's just a flag! Don't they have better things to worry about, like school shootings?

Thank you Trump. The American flag is the symbol of freedom. True freedom. Keep it flying. Many have sacrficed thier very lives for the freedom behind it. Many were maimed and wounded for its freedom and still are. Keep it flying. Even for those who challenge it. You see, that's freedom too. On the opposite end. Me, it warms my heart to see them flying and at half mast when need be. It's a type of honor. Not pride. Keep it flying..........

Well, no surprize! Is just that damn ¨mirror¨¨Ã«ffect...each of us have own trust in our principles and we match it in our way to feel and act..but if others feel that is difficult to mirror themself that way, perhaps for them is more comfortable to use theyr power to put the mirror down in place of higher themself to reach the flag match..
Strange! a flag is a path to Victory!
The veterans know better what it¨¨s mean!
I can¨t imagine Mr. Trump in that kind of war...But yes, is possible to imagine that he smilled and tell them:
Gentleman¨s, look, that¨s my way to work and represent what I am like all of you:
An American!!
Join me! and enjoy the view thissame match I DO! Heartfully wellcome, no matter how long it¨ll take to wait for you heree...:)))
Congratulation Mr. Trump!
If we¨ve reached the Moon with an American flag who say that our work on the Earth have limits!!

Trump, one more thing. I just went to the Rancho Palos Verdes web site. There's a lighthouse on it! And the address of the city council directly beneath. Are the offices of the city council in the lighthouse? An exceptional lighthouse. I love lighthouses. What more can I say? I love the blog too. It's extremely interesting. I always learn something. Always. See ya.

Look, I¨m a roumanian woman, living in Spain, but if somebody talk about Roumania as the poor country from where the imigrants comes, well, I¨m just asking, if the case, do you know something about..Nadia Comaneci, about Ciprian Porumbescu, George Enescu are just of few people worth to represent the Roumanian Flag!
The strange fact is that such a reach country as resources as in spirit is not worth in history to take care of his valueable people and they¨re still.. rove world arround but telling, YES I¨m from Roumania!and as Nadia¨s Flag make us proud of our origins of who we are.
But how many¨s can understand a work done in Excelence?!just hope that America is not contaminated with that virus of alergy at his valueable peoples as Roumania does. Not Roumania as country we have in our heart create that virus of alergy, the politics does, at least is everything about politics and his results..sorry but that is.
enough, have some homework to do first, to talk is easyer!! yyeeaah muuch easy!:)

Daria Zhukova, 23, is a model and Irina has been meeting with the famous lawyer Raymond Tooth who is nicknamed Jaws for his success in the business of divorce. Tooth is likely to be one of the guests invited to the upcoming birthday party...

Dear Mr. Trump:

Congratulations on handling the City Council in the best possible fashion.

It is wonderful to see another example that we most of us our awake enough to realize we are all related. That normally it is a few misguided people that try to cause turmoil for others.

People love their country, under dogs and what is right.

Again, congratulation.

While I've been successful in the real estate market, that is not where I primarily find my identity. The times that I felt my life was most significantly impacting the lives of others is when I wore first the Navy, then Army, and lastly, the Air Force uniform. It was on a flight home from Japan, approaching the "Pink Palace" (the Veteran's Hospital) in Hawaii that I discovered my passion for our country. Now I see it a little more clearly... a single mom raising 5 kids, working 2 jobs, and going to nursing school. I ask you, where else could this opportunity happen, but in the US of A?? Fly that flag as high as it will go, Mr. Trump!

Those Council Members that voted against the Flag should be expelled from America. I want to say so many things about this, but one simple phrase should suffie. They suck.
[-] Posted by JME4538 on 10/17/2006 10:48 AM
How is this any different than having a problem with your neighbor parking an RV in their driveway? An important part of getting along with other people is being senstive to their needs and wants. That means community standards. The council members felt that a 70 foot flagpole was out of keeping with the overall look and feel of the surrounding community which is why they were protesting this. Just like they protest anything that they feel is in violation of community standards so don't flatter yourself! As a real estate developer you should know that! Nobody forced you to put up a flagpole that tall. You did that because that's what you wanted to do. You could have just as easily put up a shorter one and it would have accomplished the same thing without creating an eye sore to force people to look at your gold course whether or not they want to. You weren't doing this to show your patriotic spirit. You were dong this to draw attention to yourself. Get a clue!

I live in a some what of a small city (suburb) and the city council is always trying to make it hard for business owners. It's not so much about what these businesses want as to how much the city wants them to pay. The city council here has very limited funds coming in and yet they waste it on foolish things like the Million dollar clocks (10 = 10 million) they put up and down one of the main streets here. Nobody cares about what time it is since most have clocks in their cars or watches on their wrists. Two years ago the city annouced that they were broke, so what did they do? They went after the business owners since the citizens voted against any new tax hikes due to the wasteful spending

Is this discussion about patriotism or about an american flag that might be too large or not. I personally have not seen any photos of the flag, do not knwo about its size. That is why I do not feel in the position to say who is right and who is wrong. Would we still discuss this topic if the flag would not be the stars spangled banner?

The flagpole is too tall??? Sounds like a cowardly excuse to me. They just don't want to show their true America hating stripes. I live in LA and know very well that the apologetic internationalist minded politically correct weaklings are among us. This may sound old fashioned but if they have a problem with this country, get the...... you know the rest. A proud salute to you and the beautiful flag! Keep it up there tall and strong where it belongs.

Dear Mr. Trump, It is unfathomable to me that when we have increasing crime, the shrnking of the middle class, Social Security eroding and Medicare for our seniors increasing in cost that a group of five people feel it is necessary to spend time debating if a flag pole is too high. It is a representation of all of our politicians mentality these days. Focus on minutiae and let someone else solve the bigger problems. I salute you in flying the flag. I wore an Air Force uniform for ten years and am very proud of this country. Fly the flag proudly. God Bless you Mr. Trump

Stand tall on this issue.
Here we go again... rediculous comments from people who focus more on their "perceived rights" than on responsibilities and morals. When will you people get it. Anyone can hide in the bushes and be a critic to those who are bold enough to stand for something. I encourage you to go visit a third world country to see where your shallow, non foreward thinking liberalism will take you. It ain't pretty. Changing the TV channel won't stop the bad guys. Only people with the courage to do the right thing... even while lesser men laugh. Another triumph for Mr. Trump!

My comment is for Laurie. I am sure I speak for many when I say THANK YOU for your service. I currently have a son in law in the marines, a daughter and son in law in the Air Force and am exteremly proud of them. As for the flag I can not believe anybody could vote to remove it. This is another case where if the majority don't speak up the few that wish to change the pledge, or remove prayer, or anything along those lines get their way. Thank you to Mr. Trump for taking the time to fight for what most Americans would want.

Dear Mr. Trump,

I have always cautioned my children never to make national icons sacred symbols. Also never to join the military.
Well done.
I see that we have this is common.
Mine are safe at home too.

Attachment to symbols often represents a mindlessness state of consciousness that appeals to the basest levels of human awareness.

Facism and Nazism, and for that matter Communism, and radical Islam are all about sacred symbols and saluting (or bending the knee) to same.

A healthy mind probably should have no attachment to symbols of authority and state. Nor should such attachment be confused with patriotism.

Burning the flag expresses an idea of what America is about, the freedom to be independant in thought and free of government excess.

I dare say that ideas, more so than symbols, reflect the human condition at its highest level.

National symbols, have anyway been coopted as a means of rallying the troops and citizens to political misadventures.

Therefore having the right to desecrate a symbol of state, should that be your choice of action, should also be a right of every citizen.

Personally I have no desire to either honor or desecrate any symbol. But I respect the rights of others to do as they wish.

Some take great joy in symbols of state, military pomp, God save the Queen, God Bless America or even God bless Donald Trump for that matter. It is their right.

If such as these are your target market, and it turns a buck, or creates local news and attention for your product, then give them what they want, a 70 foot flagpole.
I am all for making a buck and bending a few rules myself.

Just as the size of your feet does not determine the size of any other body parts, likewise the size of your flag does not reflect the size of ones patriotism.

I call it National Symbol Marketing. Marketing for recruits if you are the army, marketing for political ends, or marketing a real estate development.

Next to religious fervor, National Symbol Marketing works.

Well done for creating a stir!

Yours for turning a buck, honestly.

Jeffrey

Glad you won out Mr. Trump! I'm so glad I can claim to have family and relatives known as the Great Generation who are still living. Your story is just another reminder of changes in our world which are not for the better. Hey, I'm well versed in aesthetic theory, and environmental harmonics. But I have no sympathy for the Counsel members whose aesthetic sensibilities are offended. They sound like little new age fascists in disguise. Maybe if you flew a few politically correct banners alongside, they would be happy. You know, Green, Rainbow, Pink...
Last week I heard about a friend in London who put up the Union Jack at her front door of residence. The British Authorities showed up to tell her to take down the flag, as it was considered inflammatory to her Muslim neighbors.
Now that takes the biscuit.

So what JME4538 is saying is that anyone who puts up a "big" flag pole is only to draw attention to themselves. It couldn't possibly be that Mr. Trump just happens to feel patriotic and is proud to show off a larger version of the flag. We all know if it were about attention, Mr. Trump could afford to put up a 500 ft. tall flagpole on the teebox of all 18 holes of his golfcourse if he wanted attention. Regarding sensitivity, the sad thing about this country is that the 90% majority is considered

I have been photographing the American flag since 9/11/01 all over America and I may have the largest personal collection of such photos. At first it was easy to find the American Flag flying but over the past few years it has been very difficult to find the American Flag anywhere except fast food restaurants, car dealerships and heritage Flag poles.

While I never judge anyone as un-American for not flying the American Flag I do have a problem with any government body trying to remove an existing flying American Flag. It has long been my opinion that many businesses had to remove their American Flag a year after 9/11/01 due to strict municipal sign codes.

A land owner should be allowed to Fly any size American Flag and towns and cities across America should encourage the flying of the American Flag. Since I am always in search for an American Flag to photograph I can honestly say that the American skyline does not have many American Flags flying.

As for my photographs: One just won me an honorable mention at my state fair and many of the other winning photographs also had flags in the photo. The people who came to my photo exhibit in Raleigh, NC during September said the exhibit helped them heal and many said they received the same feeling they had just after 9/11/01. You could tell they really missed seeing the American flag around every corner.

Thank you sir, I hope to photograph your American Flag one day. Thank you for flying your American Flag.

Mr. Trump way to go! I am so proud that you were permitted to fly our coutry;s flag! What a sad commentary to even think twice as to whether it needs approval or not.

This flag is on a golf course with lots of acerage, not in the midst of a cluster of homes where an RV can present a problem with parking, right a ways on the street and ovserving traffic and pedestrains when leaving your property.

For those of you who feel that Mr. Trump is wrong, I have to ask where is your patriotism? If you are a naturalized citizen, or alien here legally or illegally then you need to return to the country where your loyalities lie and leave us alone. If you have been born and raised here, then I feel for you because we have done a poor job teaching you about the blood, sweat and tears that have been given to make us great; but, most of all our dedication to God and his word.

Mr. Trump, I believe I can tell you without hesitation, if your golf course was located in the south, this would have been a non-issue.

I think this is not about the flag, is about "The Donald" having his own way all the time, and I admire him for that. Those people from the City Council thought they would have their moment in the spotlight, and they wanted to make the most out of it, but they did not have any idea who they were trying to face.
I am from Romania, too, and I'm living in Romania, actually, but I did not quite get it. What are you trying to say? I don't understand. In what way is your comment connected to the "flag" issue, and what are you saying when you mention emigrants, Porumbescu, Nadia and the others?

The American Flag and this Flagpole represents the difference between an American Celebrating his independence and freedom from those who want comformity to a "uniform" standard.
This is America and not China as some with a little power would like it to be. Mr Trump you chose to fly the American flag not the Trump emblem, If this council has a problem, they should resign and relocate to a country that run's

I feel this may be a difficult task as I sit here debating on what to say as not to anger anyone, I WILL WORK extremely hard to provide my comment as a parent of a United States Marine.

First and foremost Mr. Donald Trump surely did not just put up a 70 foot flag pole without checking on the ordinances within the community he was developing.

Second with the extremely large investment he made in the community creating how many jobs to the area and upgrading the environment from a treacherous landscape to an extraordinary view for all those to enjoy can only make me know for a fact that this person not only respects the community he believes in, he respects the country that he pays taxes in.

Most of us can only imagine doing what he has done. And when I have that opportunity to do what he has done, and believe me, I will be making that decision one day. I too will make sure I can put up a 70' flag pole as well. I have not seen the flag pole to this day. I don't have to. I have seen the Golf course and how big that ocean view is. I know Mr. Trump was not drawing attention to himself, we all know he does not have to do that! I know he did it for my Son, and many others that have family out there who Respect what the American Flag represents to them. So two out of five people disagreed on how tall a flag pole should be in that community. Not everyone will see past the thorns on a Rose bush but those who do, I bet they stop and smell the flowers!

I too am obviously very happy for seeing what has happened in the end. It is truly a GREAT day for what and who you, Donald Trump represent in our country. And the ships out there in the ocean, I hope they can see the American Flag flying as well.
Thank you,
Respectfully,
Georgette

I think that the reason to do not allow your flag waving is this: The love for your country is a good thing. It means you love your nation. But when the love comes greater, it leads to nationalism, meaning that other people shall look you otherwise, or you shall look other people otherwise. Strong nationalism divides you from other people. I have the same opinion as Mr. Trump regarding America. I like America, despite I am not an American (I am Kosova Albanian). America is created as multinational state, meaning that the coexistence is stronger than national pertinence. Let's consider nationalism in a wider range. Balkans suffered too much from national senses. Lots of wars happened, many peoples died for the only reason that they belonged to other nation (many times with the same language, or they had relationship between them) Now, all of them have to live together, otherwise they have to suffer. Nationalism strengthens insidious feelings, but weakens international relationship. If no international relationship comes, then we don't have global economy, international affairs and stability. The situation of dominance shall be emerging.
[-] Posted by Robert Steigl on 10/20/2006 5:18 AM
Well, this time it went OK for you. But be honest: why is the flag so big? If the reason is that your love to your fatherland is so BIG? Or do you just feel that you are bigger patriot than the others, that you are bigger citizen than the others, that your golf club is more important than the city hall? The answer is upon you ...

Well, I try to keep me silent but
Mr. Solomon I can¨t!!
what¨s mean the flag we know, what about location? A golf club.for me sport represent at first fair play..have rules, involve a team, celebrate victory¨s in sport are ..soo different than in war politics..e.s.o.but if the 2last mentioned aspects will catch the point of that flag+sport combination, well many things arround will look perhaps differently.as in life too,f.e. if my son 9years old received a gift as a golf ball about one month ago, well surprize last days!! he was curious to search on internet about that game and explained to me as a ignorant one about how the ¨levels¨¨16,17 and 18 are high difficulty levels, so... it cost him much to discover the rules and follow it in sport, and any how I hope he will aplly it in life too the desire to perform fair play at peak.If the final target in sport is to be the best, to work hard and to reach it that way, well where than the niches for underground maneuvers are?! :)..we know it also but, childrens believe that is the way to be the best, have the image of the champions celebrating the victory , Alex have favorits in football in rally¨s so start to choose a way, but if later will start to work too and aplly the sport principles wich groundet his start as a person, well will see it....soo better give the imput image to follow and let them create as best they can! if in the agrresive games on internet they give money to buy guns and make it so damn real, just hope that nobody will play with theyr minds to start to give honors as flags to make children believe that desearving a flag must kill, ok, virtually but I am serieus about how we form the conduct of winning a war or we choose play it differently as work and enjoy it!!just this.
to make a war or to work hard involve thissame basic ingredient:discipline!
well, some time I lack it.but seing a flag on the right place, how many¨s will follow the way? :)any how, it¨s usefull to tell to the childrens, look, you see? somebody make his work well done all the time and the result is here!!
Can you do thissame each day?if personal example can be soo common yes, it helps,
childrens are dreaming at easy and share it with other childrens and some of them later will follow the dreams and succeed!
and others create theyr unique dreams to play it live in life, isn¨t?

Robert Muchel said. I could not of said it any better myself.

I remember when I was a little girl, my father, a school teacher, had a summer job as a trucker, picking up the U.S. Mail from the small post offices in the area and delivering it to the central office. The first day on the job, he was intimdated when they handed him this huge book with the routing (and if you knew my Dad- being intimidated was something that just did not happen). He came home the next night and was much happier- he had figured out the clue that made the whole job a piece of cake- all you had to do was make a list of the towns that you were visiting in order- go into the downtown area- and find the American flag- where you found the American flag- there is the post office. My Dad and I both thought that it was a terrible shame that we had this great country and the only people honoring the flag was the US government- this was in the Viet Name days and that may have had something to do with it. Now things have progressed so far that we have city ordinances that limit our patriotism! We have a Perkins in our neighborhood with this huge American flag and it's a great thing- but it's on this very short flag pole and looks out of scale. A few years back, I decorated a friend's garage with a paper American flag that covered his entire garage- it was the biggest that I have ever seen- and it felt so glorious to see it. We need to work hard to make sure our communities allow our pride in our country to be expressed- it's a great thing. On the other hand, Socrates felt that it was so important to accept the consequences of an unjust law that he never worked to change that he drank the poison when they sentenced him to death for expressing his ideas. It is important to obey the law, as well as to change the laws that we find unjust. Hopefully this flag will cause change in the community ordinances- rather than just an exception for Donald Trump. And if you are fined- I hope that you pay the fine with pride- it's the right thing to do.

Congratulations on your victory with the spineless politicians as it is actually a victory for "We The People". It is funny because I am actually dealing with the same problem for a 45 foot commercial grade flag at the front entrance to my house in a beautiful garden area built specially for it. The township says it can not be any taller than 20 feet or lower than the house roofline whichever is less. My saying is SCREW YOU! Do it first and say your sorry later is my motto. I will hang the flag and display it how I damned well please. So if you want to fine me go ahead because I wont pay you one red cent. Bottom Line what happened to patriotism and our right to freedom of speech and expression. People have to Stand Up and Speak Out and Stop Taking What The Politicians Are Telling Us. The township is really going to love the Box Truck that I am having painted with a large 12 x 20 american flag on it as I will just happen to park it at the front of my entrance into my driveway often enough to rub it in their face that they will not beat me or the USA FLAG !!!
Congratulations once again.

I think a lot of you are missing the point-It does not matter how tall the pole is or who it belongs to or how big the flag is--the mere fact that two of them 'American' voted to take the flag down-- they must really hate themselves and the nation- well!! I have a suggestion for them or anybody else for that matter who hates the American Flag or the nation-- emigrate for a while --its a big world out there --I bet you would soon be back bleating like sheep- cause this Nation with all its faults is still one of the best in the World -otherwise people would not be "dying to get here"

I live in the Palos Verdes area, and have seen flag, and have followed the media coverage, city council meetings, etc. of this flag pole snafu. The issue really wasn't about patriotism, but about code enforcement; and not letting the big bad billionaire tell the City what to do . . . but Trump knows that. OH, and the "mysterious" signage that went up overnight on the 110 frwy, now THAT was classic!! ;) lol

What's wrong with a beautiful flag over a new development? It would be nice to see more American flags around L.A. since this is America. I've seen flags (& signs) from different countries around L.A. that should be taken down because this is America. I applaud you for battling for your country. The City can be a pain. Maybe they're just jealous. After 9/11 we saw lots of flags, but that didn't last long. I don't want to write too much. I'm proud you fought to keep a beautiful flag standing.

My wife and I have flown the American flag at our home in Michigan since the Iranian Hostage ordeal. The only time it has not flown was when a tornado blew away a significant part of the house. It is a much smaller flag than Mr. Trump's and in a much less visible location, however our patriotism is no less. I commend you, Mr. Trump for standing straight up on this issue, which should have never become an issue in the first place. The size of a flag pole to support the American flag should be exempt from any ordinances of any type. It is not a commercial sign or a flashing light, it is our FLAG! What the hell is wrong with people?!

Hi Mr trump,
I'm glad you stood up for what you believe in. I also love the American Flag and what it stands for. "Freedom" I want you to know I have been self employed most of my life, I went to your free seminar and recieve your new book. I loved it. I wish our schools taught our young people more about free enterprise, instead of how to find a good job.Thank you, Mel Vesely

If you do a really good job over the next five years for example, I'll even think about giving you a raise. However, it will be based on the income you generate for me.

I will work it out on a percentage basis.

Some of you could be twice as rich perhaps.

Work Hard! but remember to Have Fun in the process!

Dear Mr. Trump,
Keep on flying our flag!

Washed in the blood of the brave and the blooming, Snatched from the altars of insolent foes, Burning with star-fires, but never consuming, Flash its broad ribbons of lily and rose.

Vainly the prophets of Baal would rend it, Vainly his worshippers pray for its fall; Thousands have died for it, millions defend it, Emblem of justice and mercy to all:

Justice that reddens the sky with her terrors, Mercy that comes with her white-handed train, Soothing all passions, redeeming all errors, Sheathing the sabre and breaking the chain.

Borne on the deluge of old usurpations, Drifted our Ark o'er the delolate seas, Bearing the rainbow of hope to the nations, Torn from the storm-cloud and flung to the breeze!

God bless the Flag and its loyal defenders, While its broad folds o'er the battle-field wave, Till the dim star-wreath rekindle its splendors, Washed from its stains in the blood of the brave! (Oliver Wendell Holmes)

Our Flag:Stars and stripes red, white and blue, represents thousands of men and women who died with honor serving America. Land of the free and home of the brave. How then, could any man or woman, living in this great country of ours, ask us to remove the memory of these brave men and women who shed their blood for you and me.

Wave our flag red white and blue...stars and stripes forever true.

I think when it comes to patriotism, size does not matter. Does it really have to be the largest flag.

When you are a German in Germany and you have a flagpole in your garden with a German flag (black, red and gold) attached to it, it might happen that you get some angry looks from your neighbors. The first time the Germans could show their flag and be proud of their country -without getting angry looks - was during the soccer world cup 2006.

I also support displaying our flag. I am sure that this particular flagpole and proportionate flag are a great site to see. I would enjoy the view. However, there are always two sides to every story and this is no exception.

You do not state what the reasons were for the objection and make it sound like there are council members who are non-patriotic in their efforts to stop you.

I would want all of the facts in order to assess whether they really wanted to just stop you from some action or whether they had a legitimate claim against your action.

I fly our red, white and blue American flag with honor and pride. We should give flags to every citizen of our country "Ol'Glory" and then we'll see how we do it in the U.S.A. We fly and we have pride. America Rocks the world with our freedom ringing around the globe.
[-] Posted by Bruce Baker on 10/24/2006 2:13 PM
Dear Mr. Trump, you are right about the flag.So many people in gov't are seeking populaity that they really do not care about what is right. Also people are getting OUT of touch with what was important at the time this country was founded, the ideas that this country was based on. People as a whole have NO concept of right and wrong any more. There really are things that are really WRONG under any circumstances! It is really becoming what is written in the book of Judges in the Bible, every man did what was right in his sight. When you tear down values, then you create a mess.

Waving the flag is great and it makes me feel good to see large flags. I want to remind people to support our brave troops not just

There are not enough American flags as it is. Good job Mr Trump we are free to hang the flag where ever we want.

Surely you must have a better picture of me than that. The students must be getting tired of looking at that one. How about the one where I play the blonde? Not the dumb one the smart one, if there is such a thing, ha! ha!

You GO Donald! Wish there were more flags flying high! Don't these people have something better to do? I guess they thought a plane might hit it! Hope you have a flag that high flying down here at your golf club in West Palm Beach!

The staff of Flags.com would like to thank Donald for fighting the right to display our patriotism! We sell some of the largest flags in the world and can safely say that nothing compares to large flag, in good condition of course, flying over a city, house, or golf course. Thanks again!
