Communicate Your Strategy

I saw an amazing piece in USA Today just a few days ago. It was in the lower left corner of the front page of the business section called USA Today "Snapshots."Here's the exact quote:

"Most employers don't share company strategy - Of the companies with a formal strategy in place, 70% describe their performance as better than their competition, compared with 27% of those without it, according to a survey. Percentage of companies that tell their employees what the strategy is: 95% don't tell, 5% tell."

The survey, entitled "Making Strategy Execution a Competitive Advantage," was conducted by the Cognos/Palladium Group and included responses from 143 strategy-management professionals.

I wasn't surprised by the first result. It's difficult to perform if you don't have a strategy. On the other hand, I find it shocking that 95% of companies that have a strategy don't communicate it to their employees.

This just is not common sense. How can people execute a strategy if they don't know what it is?

Clarity of purpose and direction is one of the secrets in my book, 4 Secrets of High Performing Organizations. To me, creating and achieving clarity of purpose and direction goes something like this:

  • Your mission defines your purpose for being - why you are in business.
  • Your vision defines a medium-range goal - what you hope to accomplish in the next three to five years.
  • Your strategy defines a plan for reaching your three to five-year vision.
  • Your annual business plans break your strategic plan into one-year chunks.
  • Business unit, department and individual objectives define accomplishments for all organizational units and individual members of your organization.
  • If individual, department and business-unit objectives are met, you should achieve your annual business plan.
  • If you achieve your annual business plan each year, you have successfully executed your strategy, and you will have achieved your vision.

I don't know how any of this can happen if your people are not aware of your strategy. To me, communicating your strategy throughout your organization is so much common sense that it's a no-brainer.

Bud, thanks for posting the story.
I don;t remember the quote but, it goes something like this "never show em what's up your sleeve."
I have witnessed this form of management first hand. There is a certain fear about putting all of your cards on the table that fosters this kind of behavior in upper management. The second or third guy in charge develops a problem and doesn't want you to know so he takes all of the eggs in the basket with him when he goes and starts his own company and leaves you out in the cold.
I agree that if the team is going to win then everyone should be on the same page. There is much too much backstabing going on at the top and this study only reinforces the fear that is in the top ranks of most of the companies. What ever happened to confidentuality agreements don't they hold any weight anymore?

Good day,Mr.Bilanich! In business,we are like people sailing the seas on one ship with one captain.to have a safe journey, his crew must be equipped with knowledge, strength, determination, and belief in their captain.the captain, for his part, must orient the crew of their journey, the destination, what to expect during the sail, and how to handle the situation that may arise...

If the company has no plan they make it up as they go along and change the rules to fit their needs how can they convey where they want to go if only the tip of the iceberg is aware

It is amazing that companies which have so many meetings, fund entire HR departments and yet their is still minimal cohesion in their operations.

Mr. Bilanich,

great article and fine touch started just from the lower left corner of a newspaper front page.
But with your permission, it is worst than that in a big corporation regarding products like cars industry, anybody like it, isn¨t? and drive your own one is like
having also your life in hands a summ of knowledges and ability¨s to do it emulate
in a funny symbiosis. What if we take a look in a international corporation plant where wirings are done, soo stuffy network depending on the full options of the needet car. What if after one year of in place that new plant, as Quality Engineer find things like..good strategy, informed during a week train sesion, motivations, all the core values nice presented and at easy familiar with..but something was missing there from theyr way to work as mine too that period.is about quality management and personal purpose story, hoppely hard learned with theyr guts or issues between.
Production, well, head decisions from UK training team from poland, roumanian workers. after almoust one year in place and delivering harnesses surely from half year so inherent difficulty¨s buut..why the work boards where fully with instructions in engels or poland languages, they worked based on mouth instructions which in the speed of reaching the targeted planning...but if asking about the Quality standards for production , well did¨t know even which was the last updating and which one in vigor..where to start in that pioneer time? People motivation and put in place standards process.I¨ve asked: hat if we have a real model car inside to warn people that on the accuracy of theyr work depend the safety for the people which buy that car and run with worldwide? between all the issues stimulate them to work properly having the car under the eyes know and understand :what they work for, where exactly take place the final harness which in work process they did¨t realize the utility, but seeing the car they can tell:hey, that part is my harness, for doors or board e.s.o.visualize the impact of having peoples lifes in hands..to did¨t expose here the effects of vicious errors ketting whioch can occur if the responsibility¨s for the key¨s work position are not clearly in place touch Quality Standards a.s.o. which in many places are wrotten but not updated stay as some reports
For a plant the team mate is the Quality Management of each department sustained

Transformational leadership theories prescribe that your direction and strategy should shared with your employees. If you are a true tranformational leader, your employees will share your vision and strategy.

I agree. Put it out there so everyone can pull in the same direction. You cover a lot more ground that way, and it helps everyone feel like a part of the whole.
