"You cannot teach a man anything; You can only help him find it within himself." - Galileo

In a recent issue of Business Week magazine, I was voted, by their readers, as "the world's most competitive businessperson" and voted by the staff and writers of Business Week as one of the top 10 most competitive businesspeople on the planet. To me, that is a great honor. It also underscores why I emphasize taking the initiative in order to "make it happen in your life."

I am a competitive person and to me that's a good thing, because it's the opposite of being complacent. I've talked before how complacency can keep you in a comfort zone, which isn't always the best place to be. I also compete with myself, which is the ultimate form of competition. Trying to best yourself can make your aspirations even more significant.

For example, I have achieved great success as a developer. I'm the biggest developer in New York. Who do I compete with in that case? The answer is pretty simple: myself. I've mentioned the importance of self-motivation before, and that's one reason why. It's also a great way to challenge yourself and to keep your momentum where it should be-moving forward. I'm always looking for ways to do things better, no matter how much success I may have encountered.

Some people say that's a good way to never find satisfaction. Well, I don't believe in being self-satisfied, or for very long anyway. There's no reason we can't toot our own horns once in awhile, but hey, we all know that the world is moving forward quickly and keeping up with it is important. I like being on the cutting edge of progress. I don't like being someone who sits back and watches it go by.

Unless you plan to spend your time in a café, sipping cappuccino and watching life go by, I'd advise you to take some steps towards making what you want to happen in your life actually happen. The fact that you are reading this now gives me an indication that you're not a café type, but a person who is serious about success and achievement.

There is an old riddle that brings this to light: Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left? Answer: Five. Why? Because there's a difference between deciding and doing. Think about that one for awhile and see if it pertains to you. Let's hope it doesn't, but if it does, there's still time to get going and start making things happen in your life.

The first step will be to find out what you love doing. As you know, I'm a firm believer that passion is absolutely necessary in order to achieve comprehensive success. I say 'comprehensive' success because in order to be truly successful, it's important that you feel fulfilled by what you are doing. Otherwise, what's the point? Empty success is success without passion. It's like going to school and tuning in just enough to pass so you can get out and do what you really want to be doing, or having a job that makes you watch the second hand ticking on the clock.

As Galileo said, a teacher's job is to help you find it within yourself to do what it is you should do. Then again, maybe you already know. We've all heard stories of how people bucked the system and defied their teachers and families, and became huge successes. They were persistent and steadfast, but above all they had tremendous passion for what they were doing. That made them indomitable. Michelangelo's family was dead set against him becoming an artist. He became one anyway, against great odds. Einstein wasn't a great student, but he had an amazing mind and he exceeded all expectations.

Either way, the point is to find out what you love and then take the steps to make it happen for you. Learn to compete with yourself and see how much you can accomplish. It's a great feeling to know you have the ability to make things happen in your life. In short, don't watch life from the sidelines. Get out there and go for it!

Mr. Trump I have not had the opportunity to thank you for writting Trump 101 yet but, I will now. Thank you. After reading this book I can only say that it has energized me to a new plateau. I can always tell when someone is talking through their heart and no matter who we are talking about, that is where the truth lies. you have found a way to combine this with the greatest gift of all, knowledge. It is what will define our generation and hopefully the next ones to come. I am very proud of what you and your organization have accomplished and look forward to being part of the contributions to the world that all of us may make using the knowlege that you have provided us through all that you do. Again thank you,

I liked the five frogs example. It made me realize that instead of saying to someone I have decided to do something I should wait until I'm actually doing that thing and then state I am doing something. Therefore I go from stating what I will do to stating what I am doing. Does makes a difference.

Dear Mr. D. Trump,

You have really made a tremendous point in your article posted above. I agree with you on the idea and concept of competing with oneself.

Let me ask a question, How can one identify his true passion and turn it over to success?

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I will strongly look into your point and share them too. Thank you once again.

God's Blessings.

Mr. Trump, I want to thank you for writing such a good article on encouraging people get on with their lives. I am one of them who had been up and down in life and wants to get up again. I have to admit it is not easy at all with wounds inside, and now I need to fight with myself to get out of the comfort zone(in the dump)to make my dreams happen. I hope there's more people like me out there being encouraged and really take action on turning their lives around. I hope to write you again years later and tell you how much I have achieved

Wow, get started with that. That was coming on strong that one. I hope it gets built sooner than later.

Yes, that's me Against All Odds, I can so relate to Michelangelo and Einstein. The Artist in me will Reign or Die trying! But I'm not afraid to die, because I know where I am headed. I have uncanny instincts and intuitiveness and a wild imagination and vivid and child like belief in Miracles! I have gained so much gold and put it in my Treasure Chest, from every success and failure and have gleened what has worked for me and tossed what didn't.

Mr. Trump:

I recently read your book "How to Get Rich" and I have a real estate question for you.

I have some apprehension about a real estate "deal" my husband wants to get involved with.

There is a building in Chicago in the south loop that is currently apartments, but a real estate company bought the building and is converting the apartments to condos. The company has sought outside investors to help fund marketing/managing, etc. The investors in turn will receive a profit based on the number of units sold within a specific period of time (3 years.) The return is big, 30%.

The catch is, if the units don't sell within the time period, the investors would lose their money. Now, to me, that sounds ludicrous. However, the real estate company is a reputable firm in the city. The building is in an up and coming area, the units are affordable, big, beautiful lofts with fireplaces and the building is currently 100% occupied. Also, the real estate company believes that they will sell out in 6-9 months.

Now, my husband is very excited about this. He and a group of people have formed an LLC and are going for it. To me, it sounds more like betting on a horse rather than making a deal.

Mr. Trump,

About Success and the hard pathway you walk on as far as being the One of the top most competitive business people on the planet, as your secret is competing oneself as simple it sounds it¨*s amazing to see how far you*ve reached it.
And as a teacher you are, opening the door of the acceptance to as many want to learn from you , contrary to Mr.Onasis which in his time was known with the veery short and selective time he accorded to people, is a big difference: you make history NOW and share the path, that¨s amazing! Is like the chinees proverb: to plant the seeds of your knowledges teaching people soo forward in times will remain actual the way you do it.
And as best developer in Real Estate branche and as a builder of skyscrapers you are
Mr. Trump, thank you in advance for the time and attention to read what¨s follow…
And what¨s following is a big effect on me of your first statement: Think BIG!
Can we start from the small the talk, please? Thank you for pacience!
Soo, as much time people are living on the Blue Planet-The Earth homes exist!
As a child I was veery curious about..don¨t laugh, please! ANTS :) and about theyr
ant-nests, I¨ve damaged just one as curiousity too see how it¨s look inside how many time each ant go there one

good article, I like the frog story. I am starting my MBA this Jan and see myself as the frog that jumps!
[-] Posted by Diane Skoczinski on 12/02/2006 8:33 AM
Dear Mr. Trump,

I feel like that frog who made up his mind - years ago - but didn't jump. You have inspired me to reach out again and "jump" for my dreams and passion.

I have wanted to be a singer and musician in the country music business since I was 14. Now, 32 years later, I am still in the town I was born in, doing the same thing I went to college for, which was teaching, (not entertaining, unless you call teaching "entertaining children"), and I am not even able to do that properly since there are no jobs to be had in my area teaching... I substitute teach. For the last 19 years I have been stuck doing this just to pay the bills.

My one problem has always been finding enough money to do what I need to do to get to Nashville and capture the attention of the music executives. It is a difficult business which requires money to start with. I have no money, (especially after 19 years of substitute teacher pay.) Do you think I should advertise for a sponsor? (It's just an idea that has been rolling around in my head for a while now), or do you think I should "hang it up" and just let the dream go after all these years. I know I am a little "old" to just be starting out in a career, but I have the passion to do it still, and I feel very sure that I have the talent.

I truly want to jump, but I feel the need for a little security that the sharks won't be able to eat me and leave my family without what meager money I can bring in sitting on the lilly pad.

Diane

If ever there was a time in my life and the life our great nation, it is now to make things happen. Truly you are the sole individual haveing the greatest good come forth from our nation's citizenship in a vocal capacity in a long, long time. I read every one of your Trump University editorials and print them for future referal. All of them are great, be they comments on society to instruction for life, but this one ranks right up there with "Be Positive Every Single Day", earlier this September.

I think Mr. Thrumph should understand that people have to be happy with what they have. In the end, all his empire will be left on this earth and he is going to face his mighty Creator one day , the book of life will open and God will ask Mr. Donald Thrumph, WHAT DID YOU DO FOR ME IN YOUR LIFE ?. I am sure his line of credit with God is negative at this moment.
Mr. Throumph , use your real estate empire to glorify God instead of attracting woman who only love your money and not your hairstyle !.

Mr. Trump,
I found your article interesting, but I'd like to point out that achieving success means different things to different people. I also read Diane Skoczinski's comment and felt sad for her. Money is not as important as doing something you love to do because it is satisfying. I also am a teacher and it took me 30 years to find the perfect job for me as an Educational Specialist for a human services agency. I plan lessons, tutor children of all ages and advocate for them at Special Ed. (IEP) meetings. This job is a granted position so I might be out of work in June, but I love going to work in the morning and would do it for free if I had to. There is nothing so satisfying or succesful to me than to see a child "get it" when I teach him/her something.Teaching is my passion! Although the pay could always be better, I believe I am a success at what I do.

Being on the cutting edge of design and progress is good ... but not so simple to achieve. People are like locusts they get a wiff of 'something' not really knowing what that 'something' is, yet aimlessly go for it ... because they read articles and watch Reality TV - where it's all about 'One Upmanship' --- When it comes to slandering and bitching other people to move forward themselves, they are certainly indomitable... However, rather than being productive it can be somewhat destructive. Thankfully, quality people are usually sensitive people; their fight towards success may be somewhat made more difficult, but I guess, they are also more passionate, persistent and steadfast in their vision ... continuing to improve and accepting nothing but the best... and if that means sitting and drinking coffee/tea, because other people 'dive in' aimlessly ... then ... so beit ! (I don't know of another Gaudi whose architecture is built uneven but has tremendous substance with strong foundation --- but the Pyramids certainly take some beating .... Great Synergy and Teamwork!!)

Thanks to you Mr. Trump I am loving what I do! I heard you on NPR just before your appearance at the real estate expo in San Francisco. You mentioned a star apprentice who had taken on his first mortgage and was frozen with fear. You advised him to maximize his greatest talent as a star employee and leave the real estate investing alone until he was ready to take it on fearlessly.
After hearing that I took the first three online courses from Trump University. It was just what I needed to make that quantum leap some more. Ten years ago I had no money. So I took what I had and decided if I was going to die poor I would enjoy what little money I had fearlessly. So I taught myself to day trade on the stock market. My goal was to actually lose it all and prove to myself what a loser I really was, but amazingly, I made enough for my first down payment on a house in one of the wealthiest counties of the country - Marin, California. Turned it, fixer upper, turned it, invested in Park City, Utah at the right time, and then made a resolution in January of this year to buy a building

Yes, if you have knowledge but do not use it in action, you will not go further than those who lacks knowledge. As for selfknowledge, how can one find a match? If you know what you can and like it, where do you find a person who needs the "product". Some of the persons who have the right personal assets may be in different circles and will therfore hardly meet and make a buisness match. Perhaps internet can put up with some sort of matching system. But I suppose it have to be combined with some sort of security system, times being as they are...

The fact that you are considered as the most competitive businessperson in the planet is a good reason for you to strike the unseen borders of knowledge and success. This is happening because you want to bring new milestones, standards and levels of success that no one didn't before. I use to read and learn many things everyday, as I get more and more information for things I'm interested for. Dear Mr. Trump, last night I attended your "Donald Trump Real Estate and Business Way to Wealth" seminar in Coral Spring, Florida. It was a well deserved opportunity for me and a life changing one, too. I am an architect who quit working in order to care for my two little children and recently opened my own company which I operate from home. This year I achieved all my goals and recently filled three pages of achievements, big and small. However, I could not get to sleep after I got home. Due to my own limitations, I was not able to get to what I really wanted in the seminar. I traveled down from West Palm Beach to attend the seminar for one reason: one night I went to bed feeling miserable and way, way down due to my financial situation which is not what I want nor deserve for me and my family. As every time I hit a point I can not solve, I pray and ask God, the Universe or whoever is there, for light. As soon as I opened my eyes the next morning around 5:30 am I turn on the TV, and on my search for PBS Kids channel, I stop on you talking about the seminar. I got out of bed immediately and reserved my spot. It was a big day yesterday; I got motivation, ideas and knowledge but left really sad

I am a creator with a blockage; and though you have not answered my missing piece this time, I will seek here again... still hopeful, pat

Mr. Trump: Scientific inquiry does not require special training or expensive equipment. During my first year of teaching public school in a first-grade class in Compton, California, the classroom had no supplies other than a lot of old, brown tissue paper and some large hot-pink poster board; I even had to buy my own chalk. Being short of cash and lacking experience (though not innovation!), I used the brown tissue paper as my behavioral management tool. Every afternoon when the students were particularly antsy, we would make dinosaur skin

You are one of few who's so driven to succeed at what you want & to even compete with yourself...which makes you so admirable & successful. (Not to mention famous). It's good to have inspiration to make things happen & to try & keep your momentum going even during "down" times. Being female, I don't have all the strength & energy that a man has although I realize that I have to think positive & realize that a lot of it is in the mind to realize that I'm going to achieve this one way or another & try to make good things happen. Thank you for the inspiration!

Mr Trump... Wow, You are such a great man. I really wonder what makes you so great. You are the best man on earth.

I always know that I'm the one who makes me success in the future. But, my biggest problem is that I can't figure out what I like and what I want. But, I'll try to enjoy doing things.

Anyway, your words have burnt me into a great success passion. Thanks, sir.

Mr. Trump

with the risk to consider me crazy(I¨m not!) I want to learn everything from you regarding skyscrapers and work in your team, be part of your team! Look, I work hardly to increase my financial vocabulary
I recognize that a lot of time I¨ve avoidet to touch that important aspect, believing that learning and being my way ¨bodacious¨¨ is a nice word and the meaning is a good one for womans as atitude in life! avoiding also to be boring, I must recognize that I do know nothing but I learn every single day and that if timing present somehow perturbancy*s still hope that the Diamond skyscraper project have space for a new start for me in your team! and that the project did¨t have now the final form to can be improuved a new way.
I know that you have dreamed to build the highest skyscraper in New York and is in place. But we live now new times and for that new times we live in, my purpose is to build also but another way; and something like this involve a TEAM with thissame interests. Why should you accept
to work with me? Because the concept I have inside and is hard to prouve it that will influence the health and the environment(if done in the proper place with the proper FORM), can somehow change the halucinating highspeedly scenery of that climate change times we live in, and as soon the new concept will have the proper place in our daily life, the consequences of that major changes can be somehow softlyer for peoples later, for as many people possible to reach with that concept! For me is an important crossroad. To watch how life is going on without make a difference is killing.
To find the proper teacher as gate to fulfill my purpose I find him and I that one is you Mr. Trump. I have in hands a ordinary green glass drop worked as a Swarowsky forms, and looking carefully at, imagine a triangle with 3/4/5 as ipotenuse , mirror it at the left side and have a base 6 for the new triangle formed, after mirror down side the whole new form and obtain a central line of 8 cm with a fully rhombus formed

Great post, Donald. I've always liked that quote and have used it on my blog as well. You make some really good points here about the desire to make things happen in life. In a some ways that means fostering a competitive nature.
