When You Own a Business, You Create Wealth

Several weeks ago I had a conversation with Larry Gessner, a very active member of the Trump University community.

Larry told me about an inspiring quote that he keeps posted on his office wall. It comes from a speech that Theodore Roosevelt gave in Paris on April 23, 1910. I'll share it with you in a moment, but before I do, I'd like to point out that if Roosevelt were around today, he would address comments like these to women as well as to men. Times have become less sexist, and I believe that Teddy would have changed too. But here's the quote:

"It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat." - Teddy Roosevelt

That is powerful stuff. I cannot think of another quote that so clearly describes what it takes to achieve a dream or how important it is to turn a deaf ear to people who tell you that you don't have what it takes to become successful.

We live in a world where too many "experts" focus on telling other people that they can't achieve their goals. I've heard those negative words as I've pursued my dreams, and I bet that you have too. Too many people are all too eager to tell us that we don't have the experience, the money, the connections or the know-how to create wealth for ourselves. The only piece of advice they have to give is, "Wait . . . wait . . . wait some more."

Of course, taking action offers no guarantee of success. But one thing is certain - not taking action ensures failure.

I believe that Trump University's philosophy falls pretty close to Teddy Roosevelt's. We're not here to tell you that you can't reach your dreams, we are here to tell you that you can. We're not here to dangle carrots on the ends of long sticks by telling you that you need to study for years and years until you earn the credentials you need to reach your goals. You can do it. You can get started today. You are in control of your life.

Maybe it's time to get outside your comfort zone, shake things up, and take that critical step toward a brighter, richer future.

My late father started his own business in his 40's and had to leave the business when he became ill in his 80's. He put in long hours but it was his passion. He spent $35 for a single advertisement in 1960. That was the only ad he ever needed or placed to sustain his business for 40 years. Word of mouth did the rest. I once asked him why take such a risk running a business. His reply was, "I want my future in MY hands. I don't want to depend on someone else for my success or failure."

After my father passed away my brother took over the business and it has since failed. He didn't have a passion for the business and neither did I. After college (which was paid for

I agree with Roosevelt's words that there is no effort without errors. And I dont find Roosevelt said to accept the betrayal. It is a shameful to publish a wrong information to the world and insult one part of people! Stop to think your own personal benefit! And start to think the beneficial for the whole people! Your contribution will be valuable to the world! I hope the blog readers are able to think my words with thoroughly! Good Luck!

It is a refreshing feeling to hear this coming from such a man. This is the kind of encouragement needed in the world of business we know today. When you have someone believing in you and without benefit, urges you on to believing in yourself and achieving your goals and dreams, is priceless and something never to be taken advantage of. This is an awesome quote.

The comments from Mr. Sexton is exactly and precisely what I meet every day in my fight to prove that i can become a true entrepreneur.
I spend most of my professional life outside my comfort zone and it is getting
comfortable.
One little question if I may?
Setting the scene for the future, charting my own destiny is fairly easy.
Sometimes the everyday motivation is the hard part. Even though the goal is every clear and I know what to do, finding the
motivation of the moment is to me the greatest challenge. There is of course all the klichées but they are becoming so obvious that they do not work anymore.
Could you come up with something that could fuel the motivation in those difficult moment when the drive is only 80%?

The perfect entrepreneurial attitude. But good for all goals the one might have a passion for. You may not even be lucky enough to find one cheerleader for you in your undertakings. But like most (perhaps 100% of) successful and innovative people, you will find critics and doubters. Gene Hackman was told he was a horrible actor. Dolly Parton was told she could not make it. Madonna was told that she was all ambition and no talent.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if passionate people let others put out their fire? We would still be walking as a main means of travel and shouting as a means of long distance communication.

I couldn't agree more... people are so down on any ideas that are not current with what is "going on" now. I do private money lending, short sales, and foreclosures working on my brokers lic and contractors lic as i want to take trumps philosphy 1 more step and be in total control of the "game" I'm looking at some commercial land now and most are telling me that the area sucks and isn't where it is at... but it is the best commercial spot next to the I-5 in califrona in a small town but it is the best one and when i fix it up I will be the one laughing last! imagination is the key being able to see what others dont' see and to look to the left when peole are looking down!

I'm surprised to see the political correctness is practiced at Trump University. Are you so timid of offending someone that you have to premise a great quotation with specualtive remarks? It is so sad to see that our freedom of speech is so rapidly eroding.
I really don't expect you to post this comment, but I hope you read it and consider the thought behind it.

The quote is called "The Doer." We gave it to our sons friends as high school graduation gift. I have it hanging amongst my credentials...and frequently refer to it on bad days...

Out of 12 comments on this story there is one that proves The former President correct. Instead of sharing something uplifting he had to point out where he feels the author stumbled. Proving that even in the mist of positivity you'll find a critic. I'd never really heard or paid attention to the quote before, but I like it so much I printed it out and hung it in my cubicle at work. Good luck to all of you who fight on when facing great odds and constant negativity.

Thank you for that quote. It is a beautiful reminder.
I am a chiropractor for 20 years. I always loved the profession, but now its like we are employees of insurance companies. I work more hours for less money. I am investigating changing professions so that I can be my own business again.

Life doesn't just happen...
You create it with your thoughts, words, and attention.

I allow my belief in miracles to emerge and fill me with a beautiful light. In my mind's eye I hold an image of the people for whom I desire to pray. I send out the beautiful light of the miraculous to these people and imagine it completely surrounding them. I affirm that this light is healing, repairing, and bringing wholeness to all of these people. In my imagination, as I see and feel the power of the miraculous touch my friends and loved ones, my faith in miracles grows. I really needed to read this inspirationl quote at this time. Having sacrificed myself on the alter of making Others successful through my working for someone else. This refreshing idea of "when you own your business you own your life" is just what I needed as I as I struggle to get MY BUSINESS of 4 months off the ground. Thanks Michael!

This quote and the support posted here, reminds me of asking parents about their children. If you take 100 parents, 95% of them will tell you their child is above average and all problems come from the Other kids. The same applies here, when you ask people are they action oriented, 95% will say yes. Are you an expert in your field? Are you world class in your field? If you answer yes, be prepared to describe how you compete on a world class stage. There are very few are true world class experts in any area and just as few people willing to take the risks associated with success. Education and knowledge have no correlation and perhaps are detrimental to generation of wealth and success. The bottom line is that risk taking, dealing with chaos, and having the tenacity are the essentials to President Roosevelt's quote.

Wow great article, I'm am a current college student in California and attending a community college. I got my Real Estate License when I was 18 and I worked under a independent company and its been tough with all the competition that I had to overcome. I'm 20 now and I'm still working towards my future.I was blown away

This is truely awesome. It goes to show that having a dream is not good enought. But actively going after your dream, and learning from each mistake each time you fall is what really counts ~ Great Words and Great Examples Live on.

My concern about this course is that I do not see anything specifically related to Commercial Real Estate and Development. It is easy to find tips on single family homes and small multi-families, but I was interested in the courses if you had something more specific for Big Box, Retail, or Large Residential projects. George Ross has been my guide so far, but is there a course you offer or will that can walk me through it?

I loved the Teddy Roosevelt quote. Being young, we are plagued with what are referred to as "haters" or skeptics for the older people. Who needs them?
