Another Flagpole Battle

Recently, I fought with the City Council in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, over a 70-foot flagpole with gorgeous American flag waving over my Trump National Golf Club. I thought it was the epitome of patriotism. Some people disagreed, but I won and the flag is flying high.

Now I'm having a similar disagreement with the city of Palm Beach over a gorgeous American flag on an 80-foot flagpole flying high over my Mar-a-Lago home and club. The city is complaining that I didn't have a permit.

You don't need a permit to put up the American flag. The day you need a permit to put up the American flag, that will be a sad day for this country.

But I'm not the only one with flag battles. Recently in Newnan, Georgia, Roy Johnson had a similar fight. The 37-year-old patriotic truck driver has a 20-foot flagpole in his front yard where he flies the American flag.

Some of his neighbors complained, saying it violates the subdivision's policy on exterior structures...and so it must be taken down. The Homeowner's Association has threatened to either fine Roy $25 a day, hire someone to take down the flagpole themselves, or even sue him. All for just being patriotic.

But Roy stood firm. He argued that this is his First Amendment right and he's exercising freedom of speech. The board allowed him to keep the flag.

Good job, Roy. I'm glad you stood your ground.

Mr. Trump there have been many of these types of fights down here in Houston. I can not believe that people do not want to see our beautiful flag waving in the wind. This totally disgusts me.

Trump what do you think about survalence (spelling? oops.) cameras in public places? Do you like big brother watching? I don't think I necessarily do. Who is big brother anyway and who determines which big brother is to do the watching? I'm all for security but what if security is corrupt? What if who they are watching is the good guy? Then what? Nope I don't think I like all those cameras in public places. How about foot security instead? Like the old beat cops. More jobs. Just a thought. Savannah Ga. for example. Isn't this America? Land of the free. Home of the brave and the American flag? Where we have privacy? Yes, even on the streets. What if a nice young lady needed to pull her slip up or down a little or readjust something else? Or maybe another little habit you might not want people to see? Isn't this America? Land of the free? Red, White and Blue? Stars and Stripes for all? So who becomes the prisoner then?

Don't need all the junk. Sorry of I wrote this in the wrong place. I love staying in tough. I love reading your stuff and sifting throught that excellent mind of your. I'm not an American citizen but I agree with Mr. Trump. Any country should allow its citizens to freely demonstrate their patriotism. I've lived in the US for five years and I would raise the American flag anytime (even though I am fully a Kenyan citizen). Great thoughts!

That's crazy! If a person wants to put up a flagpole with his country's flag on his territory it's his right unless it SO huge that that the jets and planes can be damaged. SMILE. Just one flagpole no matter how high it is cannot "violate the subdivision's policy on exterior structures", it almost cannot ruin the exterior of a yard.

I have a flag pole in my front yard, but the cord is broken and I have no way to reach the top pully to install a new one. I only wish I could fly the American Flag. It is a shame that other Americans want to prevent someone from displaying the colors of our nation.

I don't know what the brouhaha is all about. You are on US soil, US air space, US territorial waters...and the moon, why do you need permission from anyone? Ignore the petty minded ignoramuses (or, is it ignorami) who object to it, officials or other busy bodies. Hey, I see Mexican, Italian, Polish flags just about everywhere in Chicago area. Perhaps a national advertising campaign to let every one know that it's A-OK to fly the flag under the First Amendment and Freedom of speech, etc. And then some. Think of all the people who died for the flag. I am British. In Britain displaying the Union Jack (British Flag) has its draw backs...the flag had been hijacked for demonstration purposes

I've been photographing the American Flag since 9/11/01 as a way to heal myself after the horrific terrorist attracts. As I crossed America in a small truck I would pull off the road and document American Patriotism with every turn. It finally got to the point when I just kept going because I new one day I would pass that way again and I would make sure I had enough time to photograph the flag I was passing.

Over the year of 2002 I realized the flags I had passed were disappearing, the weather had reduced them to shreds, time had taken its course or the patriotic artist had been harassed

you don't need a permit to fly a flag, but erecting an 80ft flag pole is a different story! Depending on their location, these sorts of tall structures pose many threats, such obstacle clearance for arriving and departing aircraft.

Let me balance the discussion here. My guess is property owners generally do not need a permit to fly a flag, but may need a permit to put up an 80 foot pole on a golf course or a 20 foot pole in a neighborhood. This is not about patriotism, but about erecting tall vertical structures in regulated zones. Steering this discussion towards patriotism is at best a distraction tactic, or worse, a scare campaign.

Considering the reverence and respect I have for our country and the flag, I would definitely agree with the right to fly the flag over various properties. Assuming it's done with good taste…that is. I have no doubt that Mr. Trump used good taste. But using the free speech argument can also work against you. What if someone wanted to fly a flag from a country or organization that wanted to destroy our country? Or worse yet, what if they wanted to fly the American flag in some disrespectful manner?

Trump-----------> I still love you. Even though I haven't met you face to face yet. Remember what I said "Don't Let Go." I want the Gold and the Gold is you. That's what I saw in the beginning and that's what I asked for when you asked me "What do you want?" and I said "YOU" I knew what to say then. Even after someone said to me "Jeri you don't want to do this" and I said "Yes, I think I do." I knew I had to and I knew I had to follow you. So, if I get angry, don't let go. It's bigger than that. I depend on YOU.

Unbelievable that an american would have official resistance from local community organisations about flying their nation's flag.
From here in New Zealand we see the powerful expression and understand what it means when someone burns the american flag. It's a symbol of all that America is about - freedom of speech, democracy, freedom to pursue your own dream. I don't think you guys have anything else that is as symbolic as your flag? If you have achieved your goals in the country that gave you the opportunity to do so, shouldn't it be an expression of that achievement to lift that flag high and celebrate it?

Our flag has the Southern Cross ( stars shown in the southern pacific night sky), and the Union Jack ( a carry over from the British colony days), so I think we could do with a change and have a flag that captures the heart of kiwiland, maybe a flag with yachts, ferns and smiles :)

And how about "freedom of speech" and the Confederate Flag? The forces of reverse racisim and Marxism, so heavily entrench now, in this country, intimidated every southern state capitol and millions of citizens who wished to honor the sacrifice of brave defenders of our land in numerous foreign wars from their section, into buying into their unabashed, anti-american attack on freedom of speech. No wonder Mr. Trump has these issues, now. The roots for attack on the display of the Amercan flag started with the anti -Confederate Flag posturing, and expanded from there to anti-Christmas and The Ten Commandments displays, There is a cost to buckling under to these subversive swine who campaign for their own "rights." but against yours.

The city in Palm Beach should just let you keep your lovely flag up & stop bothering you! That was shrewd of you to find the example of the man in Georgia who stood his ground to keep his flag up. You shouldn't take your flag down. Keep flying the flags. Now is this going to happen in New York next?

Dear Mr. Trump,
I remember a time not too long ago, when I was growing up and our American flag was flown on top of every building and business in Oakland, California and no one complained. It was an immense time of patriotism and glory. It is wonderful to know there are men like you Mr. Trump Roy and others who are not ashamed to fly The American Flag.

Can't fly the American Flag!! That is ridiculous!! A permit? Is that called Totalitarianism or Communism or Controlism? That kind of thinking is the ruin of this nation. Men and women have died for the right to fly that flag! For a 7 letter word called, Freedom!

Good for you Mr. Donald Trump! Most people would have bowed down to that. These small things that people will submit to, will lead to bigger control and more demands

I love the flag too and it is sad that people in our country do not approve of it's prominent display. I must question however, if the neighbors were protesting because of it being the american flag or because it's size would be disproportional to the property. Like a car dealership size flag for a single family residence. As much as I like the flag it would be just as disgraceful, distasteful and ridiculous to have an american flag that was too big. On the other hand I also wonder if the neighborhood association was hiding behind their

I have a problem with giving that girl a second chance after testing positive for cocaine and drinking. Especially since her platform is MADD. In addition there was a young 14yr old that said it was okay to give Miss USA another chance because what she did was just proving that she was "NORMAL". I'm 50/50 on this one. I do agree strongly in an American's right to fly the American flag on their property. It's the American way! At the same time I understand why neighborhood associations exist...I don't always agree with them..but I understand the desire to have some property guidelines. I live in Atlanta and on the outskirt of the city there is an American flag on an extremely high pole. So high I can see it while driving down the highway. I like it as it creates a strong patriotic presence along the highway. I can understand a 70 ft flag pole on a golf course but an 80 ft flag pole at a residence? But you know I got a feeling if that flag said Trump with the Trump University crest the neighbors would love it.

As you so eloquently said during the press conference yesterday, she deserves a second chance. With rare exception - everyone does...

Mr Trump, in South Africa our autorities considerflag poles and flags to be "advertising" and they are quite strict if you don`t have an advertising permit for your flag and pole. Some self centred weird chap arrives and removes it and follows that with a fine.

In the past I have wondered why these council types have police that find flag flyers like us but alas they are understaffed in the murder, rape and robbery.
I think that we need to send these chaps on recourse management course.

Donald my belief is, society is becoming weak and fragile. Where is the strength in character, that allows people to be proud of their heritage.

There are so many things you have to be sensitive about, as to not offend others.

Being an Australian we embrace other cultures. We are patriotic and we appreciate other countries patriotism.

The fact that you need to fight to get your national flag in the ground is amazing. Truthfully I think it is pathetic!

It looks like the people across our great nation in positions of "power" at all levels are taking actions not to promote welfare among those who support them, but to ensure their own safety and happiness.

I believe AT LEAST two weeks must be spent in our public schools teaching the script of, and the complete history behind, the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution (not just the Bill of Rights). All Americans should be fully aware of the principles our freedoms are based upon.

Dear Mr. Trump, the flag battles just show us how far the U.S. has fallen. I predict that in the year 2020 the U.S. as we know it today will not exsist. We that still have some sense NEED to stand up and fight all the people that are tearing down the U.S. What is the standard- go back to the founding of this country. What were the founders trying to start here on this land we call home.

I am retiring after proudly serving 20 years with the US Army. I defended idiots rights to say that you have to take down the flag because it was an "eye sore". I have also turned the other way when they proclaimed their rights and set the flag afire. I have even had friends buried under that flag when they died protecting its way of life. Well guess what. Like I started out with. I am retired and I will be happy to whoop the ass of anybody that disgraces that flag that I have proudly worn, displayed and fought for. Fly your flag proudly for those of us that have served defending her.

Hello Americans it's fascinating that there is so much uproar about pegging your national flag on your own soil; which ought to be the symbol of your strenght and courage!!! I am truly embarrased! Imagine living in a country like Nigeria as I do, where the flag is nothing much more then the value of a water sachet, people like me who are inspired

It's ironic that our flag is the symbol of our freedom, yet we are not free to display it as we please.

I believe that if you have a strong conviction about something ,you should stand as a Daniel and not be moved

You're doing the right thing Donald, don't ever doubt it for a second. I'm glad someone has the patriotism and common sense to confront madness like this. Every true American is behind you on this one.

Dear Mr. Trump, Good for you!! Thank you for standing up for all Americans, even if some aren't smart enough to appreciate it. We better start remembering and honoring the good ol' USA or we will see it disappear in the future. Now, what can you do to get ROSIE O'Donnell OFF THE TV forever! You are a wonderful man...thanks again!

I just want to thank you Mr. Trump For standing up to city councils who think that just because they have a little power they can step over the Constitution of the United States.

You go Donald Trump...I think you are the best...Horray for a patriot American that can do something proper and with his money. The U.S. flag should be flown any where

Dear Mr. Trump: Thank you for demonstrating true American patriotism. If I were you, I would sue the cities that don't want you to fly the American flag. Sue them for every dime they have. Sue their mayors and town councils. Maybe then they will wake up. Also I want to thank you for the Trump seminar I attended in Pittsburgh, my home town.
Keep up the good fight, and God Bless!

Mr. Trump & All others;

I have just finished reading the post and the news on Fox regarding the flag pole issue in Florida. I am going to get right down the brass tacks here. This is going to be about more than just the flag. This flag issue is totally out of hand, and to be quite frank the politically correct people can just get set to have to suck it up.

I'm a conservative guy who loves his wife, respects our justice system, and loves his kids, and after having spent the last 21 years in the Marine Corps, I have a very realistic view of the world, and our country. I say this to all you who don't like this flag, its various sizes or placement…or other aspects of this country. Believe it or not, this is still America; we were founded on Christian principles, (no others) freed

Mr. Trump, I am a retired veteran, and a veteran of a foreign war. No one, and I mean no one is going to tell me that I can't put up my flagpole. And that is just what my HOA in Hudson, Florida is trying to do. They are telling me that I can only display a 2'x3' flag on the front of my house during holidays. I have written them a letter explaining that this is totally un-constitutional, and that I am not going to abide by this. My flagpole will go up. I would love to talk to you about this, as I am sure you have done much more homework than I have. Please feel free to email me. I know you are a busy man and I will be patient. I get the feeling I am going to be in a fight. and I would love to have some advise, and your personal support. Thanks, Dave Bergner (AN AMERICAN)

I live in Columbia, SC in a master plane community called Lake Carolina. I approached the associations Architecture Review Board (ARB) President Larry Ridlehoover 2 months ago and requested permission over the phone to install a 30ft flagpole in our front yard at 5 Burgee Court that would have the US Flag and the US Marine Corp Flag. Larry came by to house to approve the location and contacted me after with a go ahead to install the pole from the ARB. Today 4/17/07, Larry tells me that he did not realize the pole would be so big and in hindsight he should have asked us to submit drawings. He cites that my neighbors are complaining about the pole and flags, so the ARB under pressure would like me to remove it from my property. I’m a US Marine Corp disabled vet who would die for these colors in any country including this one. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

Here’s the flags and 30ft flagpole in question in Columbia, South Carolina. Take a look http://worldwidegeneration.com/usa.htm and see those who are complaining. Feel free to stop by house and look for yourself, give a salute and say hello.

Thanks again Cpl Cerney USMC DAV

I believe conformity breeds mediocrity. Conformity keeps creativity in bondage. When you get tight regulation, it eliminates the possibility of developing new and different applications. Granted, there are times when you must conform such as when you make a presentation to investors, but there are times when unleashing ideas allows the birth of a masterpiece.

I remember hearing about your flags. You made me proud.
