I know we're a lawsuit-happy society, but now I've heard everything.

Some schools throughout the country are forbidding kids to play games like "tag" - anything that has them running around - because the kids might get hurt on the playground. And if the kids get hurt, their parents might turn around and sue the school for endangering their children.

This is ridiculous. Kids have to be kids. They can't just sit at their desks all day with their hands folded, looking at the blackboard.

When they go out to recess, children have to be allowed to run around and relax. They have to be able to get all that excess energy out of their system or they aren't going to learn anything when they go back inside.

I can't believe schools are wasting their time even thinking about things like this. Forget the pushy parents. Forget the threat of lawsuits. Let the kids go out and play.

Mr. Trump,

I*ve been in summer for some summer courses in Canarias, an old small school
but what I like it veery much it was the patio.small as the roomclasses too perhaps for the period that school was build it was sufficient..so if the space did¨t permit the free mouvements
it was something there, the colours of the trees with theyre red flowers to soft the mind and recharge it with vital force..as child I was rebel one, allways with the eyes on the window but with ears listening..and outside..concrete overall, just in front of the teachers entrance some green and flowers and tall trees but not the side where we go to play...soo, from my kitchen window observing the twins trees, and outside discover that when they*ve start to rise leafs, other similars did*t have it!! so earlier with 2 weeks each spring time, earlier with the flowers as candels for the heaven too, start to search the whole trees in small city to see, are mine the firsts? yes, each year, but from that chestnut tress I go forward outside the city, enlarging the discovery teritory, other trees, other gardens with flowers...are things which my son do it also, when soo many hours in the school, at home will just go to play outside, and we have sometime wars as first the homework and if time you will go outside..
also concrete arround but many childrens and protected aria...well, earlier my mother did¨t have time too much, as today, time is a lux somehow or we loose it too easy, but my mother tell me that if I will don¨t care myself and come home with a broken hand, she will broke the 2-nd too to be sure that will never happen again.. :)) is just a way to talk and I*ve never broke hands or else! but yes , childrens did¨t have the danger feeling too sharp, they expose themself at easy, but they learn also that way...
Maany things I¨ve learned in the nature
still did*t have time to rediscover it again with my son, plann each year a trip in mountains and see with the eyes of the child, how he react and discover everything..as restricted his unverse is, perhaps will find something like this boring and miss his gameboy or computer or whatever!!! if see him fall down and hurt, I*m dead scared but when remebering myself, well, I know it will be ok after give the proper care for the hurt..
Talking in that summer courses with my teacher about the *future city* ideas about how it will looks like, we*ve touched the radiant floors as ancians(romans) did long time ago, technology¨s about water to spare, a.s.o. but when about garden with green, well, NO!! why? old continent did¨t have free land to integrate the green in planning, with water problems it will be also a waste of the resources...well, but if we care much about reforestation to help the nature in his natural circuit, it will be better, it can start from the scholls, if each child will plant a tree, will have HIS OWN tree, and carying will understand better what the nature mean, how it grow, how to respect it and to receive as feedback the green leaf&flowers wich surelly are more beauty full than others*couse is mine!! a.s.o.. so with soo many schools each child with his tree, can contaminate the parents the company¨s and ..like this, can you see it?! how many fears we have?
how can we play learning what*s really important, if future generations will grow
between restricted rectangular places, well some vacations, but..how will they understand the climate changes and the solutions for and the effects as much time large part of that generations are time/space restricted to go out, to be part of what we are nature! hmm, just thinking that with ancians jewelry*s as buildings we have also nice park*s with fountains as art done, well, now they have recycled water in, but how much time exists is not bad, isn*t? alone to go in the park my son? impossible! back to patio, how good that we have it! in schools? if I will see a school where like in the army each one still and order(is

Mr. Trump,
with your permission again, about playing and lawsuit-happy society.
If we play proportions for a special skyscraper, I*ve discovered a special article in italian language..
I love Rome and was there for 3 days , seeing the Bracciano lake and asked myself if the pearls buildings there have some influence on the water of that lake: like cristal, can see the fishes swimming in..
and the Ton make the musik, right? well, in that free art of Mason articles I*ve read, Ernest Ansermet explain about the musical geometry which have large roots from Pitagora musik and geometryt until Masaru Emoto today which prouve it visually: a vocal message printet in water, after freezing it, if the message was of love the water have beautifull geometry, the natural fractals respecting the number of the water, 6 hexagon shape as base form..if the message is about war or some bad, the structure of the molecule of water is distroyed…(in my springtime I¨ve wrote a poem about Contrapunct of Bach, without knowing what a deep print have done in my soul discovering classics of music in that time :) ..So searching about octave the 8-th musical note DO have in musik different frequency*s ( Hz)depending which octave we play. the natural scale is n=1.666 for do1 we have n=2 e.s.o.Intervals play a big role here for others notes involved in partiture..they can have 5/2n,5n,10n e.s.o. The *catch* is to build the highest skyscraper respecting proportions,
and if in vertical I was thinking which the secret can be, having in mind the Pascal pyramid, if we look at the 3-rd vertical line on the triangle, we have a simple pattern in...soo, if the surface will not permit a large base, I was thinking how can we play the 12 in total stairs of Pascal to cover proportionally right the golden rules of sacred geometry and reach the tallest possible level?!!the distances between stairs is the trick but carefully applyed.. so what if the stairs wil decrease to the top combining the pattern of Pascal with a octava scale, the 1-st pattern fit well with frequency¨s discovered today. I need a good programm to play the forms and choose the best result before present it. and looking at the ancians celtic Kells book and theyre pictures, the pillars and arches are allways with a very sofisticated design in, is very common in the old roumanian tradition that forms, earlier we make the hollybread respecting that forms..seeming like a fisher net...what if the pilars of a high skyscraper can reread in steel the length and form that designs provide at details?!! the central form, octahedron as we say, looking at the Vitruvian Man, well, interesting, the cube determined

Maybe the laws should be changed so that sue-happy people aren't rewarded anymore. Or maybe schools should just post warnings everywhere saying that they assume no liability and have the parents sign a release form.

I totally agree.
Actually, I just found out your blog.

I spent my childhood falling out of trees and rolling down hills. It taught me that failing, or falling, was part of the process of learning skill and the courage to try again was essential to success.
I have seen the playgrounds which attempt to be child-proof. I have seen the way parents try to insulate their children from the scrapes and bruises. How much of it is because we want to protect our children and how much is because we want to protect ourselves?

As the mother of a 13 year old boy, I have nursed many bunps and scrapes and a few ER visits. And I wouldnt change a thing. That is part of being a kid and learning boundries. I would rather he learn them on the playground than from a video game or television.

At a time when physical fitness is at an all-time low - this is very sad. As a child I have many fond memories of chasing my friends around the school yard - and then, later, the girls!

Donald, it is great that you give your life opinions. As an inspiring entrepreneur, I am interested not only in business mind set of yours. But all these personal opinions are very subjective and there is no right and wrong. I've read most of your books. I would love to read your business opinions, not as much personal ones (sorry). I mean, this is why I come here. I want to grow. Also, i am in my last year of university and i am old enough to understand that many professors don't have real business experience. What they write about is just another critic's opinion (theoretical one, not practical one). I'd rather listen to an entrepreneur than a professor. If i was smart enough, i would never go to the university. I would start my own business. Unfortunately, it was too late for me to realize that, and i invested a lot of time and money in this education thing to stop. So, I have one more term, and can't wait to get out and to start my own thing.

What a litigious society we live in today. They are taking sports and the arts out of schools because of budgetary cuts and complaining that our children are overweight, sedentary and lazy. Bumps and bruises are part of growing up and if a child gets hurt playing tag it is totally innocent and not intentional. Let kids be kids because too soon they have to be grown-ups!

Hi, I'm Dutch, a mom and studied Psychology.
In England, there is a very interesting experiment with playing grounds that are organised in different colours. Blue for rapid movements, red for chill and yellow for games played together. I don't remember exactly. I think this is a smart sollution to prevent children from hurting each other and still letting them play and be children. I think a lot about how we can improve. Maybe it would be interesting for Europeans and U.S. to swap best practices.

Donald,
I can't agree with you more. Our children have become obese and are suffering from all types of fat related diseases.
Another way the schools prevent the Children from getting this much needed exercise and much needed mental break is to use their recess as punishment. Giving children heart disease can not be punishment for not turning in homework. Please stay on this issue, for the children and the future of our Country.

Yes, you said it Donald. Children need use their left and right brain. It is a human right for a child to play to relate to each other and learn to fall to know their limits. I was walking to park one day when I heard a mother tell her daughter to stop running or she'll fall. The child stopped and all the life in her stopped as well. She just wanted to run to the park in great enthusiasm. Our schools must ignite the fire inside the child not just fill the pail. Let them play!

Yes Donald you said it!. Children need to use their left AND brain. It is essential for children to play and explore themselves.
[-] Posted by lightwayvez on 02/12/2007 7:57 PM
It is rhetorical, again its the insurance companies who own it. No one can afford the luxury to play any longer because the cost of insurance overtakes the extra school yard monitors to keep the kids safe.

Most yard monitors at recess are volunteers who I don't know that a school can insure ?

Even if the monitors are paid can they be insured ?

Out source school recess supervisors ?

Kids definitely need to play, and adults need to design the spaces so they can do it safely. My son attended a school that had concrete play areas. Lets not forget adults need to play too.
