Critical advice on successfromthe new book, Trump 101

I once hired a very qualified young man. I expected him to be great. But boy, was I ever wrong. This guy took so long to explain everything that I began to dread talking with him. He was just too slow. Yes, he was thorough and painstaking, but he couldn't keep pace. He wasted too much time.

Business is no place for stream-of-consciousness babbling, no matter how colorfully you think you speak. Whatever you do, keep it short, fast, and right to the point.

Being concise is polite. It shows that you respect other people's time. When most folks have to listen to endless discourses, they squirm, their minds wander, or they frequently don't listen. Instead of making their points, long-winded talkers turn off their audiences.

Before I went into partnership with the Brazilian entrepreneur Ricardo Bellino in Trump Realty Brazil, which will be the largest golf and residential complex in Latin America, I gave him only three minutes to explain his idea. I was extremely busy and not eager to listen to a presentation.

I expected him to decline. But not only did Ricardo accept my terms, he made such a great presentation in the allotted time that I was fascinated with the deal. Now we're partners. It's amazing what people can do when they have deadlines.

So, give yourself deadlines. Practice delivering your presentation in less than five minutes, and then chop it to three minutes. Anything longer can seem like a lecture. Edit yourself by cutting everything that isn't absolutely necessary. The people you speak to will be grateful that you distilled your pitch to its essence. If they have questions, they'll ask, which is what you want.

Extraneous information in long-winded presentations is like junk mail. Everyone hates junk mail, especially busy people. No one wants to sort through irrelevant stuff.

So instead of delivering verbal junk, limit your pitch to only necessary information.

I couldn't agree more. Many people think I am quiet. I'm not really. It's just that when I talk I only speak what is important. Plus, when you aren't talking so much it gives you the opportunity to LISTEN to people, which can sometimes be a more valuable time saving tool than concise speaking.

It will be interesting to see how you defend yourself against Rosie's accusations. From what I can tell, she's right on the mark.

To the comment above me .... Carol, this is not a dream land and stop looking for "mentors". It's a harsh world that's being played as if it's a game. In a way it is and the one who plays it best wins.

Regarding Trump's remarks about Rosie ... I don't blame him. It's his motto. You attack me I attack back. Whether you agree with it or not ... it doesn't matter.

We're all people and we play the game how we want to. Some might start hating Trump for what he said .. and others will love him for it. You loose a little, you gain a little.

P.S. Rosie does have a loud mouth and it's about time someone mentioned it to her.

P.P.S If you ingore a jerk kicking your ass while you walk ... they'll be kicking it for a long time. On the other hand, if you turn around and knock their lights out ... well, problem gone.

Mr Trump, I think that is very good advice. It is loaded with value to the person that will listen.
[-] Posted by TN on 12/22/2006 2:40 PM
Businesswise, you're right. A corporation is a separate entity that goes into any sort of legal proceeding of itself independently. You and the company are not one in the same. Behaviorwise, I'd prefer you to be more of a hardliner like me in that if you choose a lead position then that's what you commit to instead of drinking and making out with a younger girl etc. so I would've let the lady go. So what you insulted Rosie's weight, she insulted your hair, so that argument goes no where. Role model or not, I think you're a whole lot of fun. I'd hang out with you anytime. And that's straight and to the point.

You are a petty, small minded man. If not for the grace of your inheritance, and your family's wealth, you'd be a second-rate loser. Your recent tirade against Rosie O'Donnel just reinforces this. I second the last comment. Grow up!

Dear Mr. Trump:

I can certainly profit from this blog. I only wish I would nhave read it before sending you my last E-mail, because I covered several issues in one.

I come from several generations of talkers, so I will have to work on this.

Thanks for the advice.

I have made investment 14 months ago, and it 's doing good, ( since first month it's covering the costs), but I belive that can do much better. My product is nationwide and it is ethnic. It is the only one and first one in history that' has been done from here( USA )for this group of ethnic people. Bosnian,Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Makedonian, .. I'm having trouble reaching to American business people and companies to propose them with some ideas. I'm asking for a chance. Some people told me that there is no money in ethnic market. I own my company for 5 years now, and this investment alone for 14 months. It is the hard work , and I' m loving it, The market I'm catering to is numbered in milions!
Please, if you could tell me what is the way to reach these "KEY" people. Someone like you Mr. Trump, for example, someone who makes these decisions and get just three minutes of their time?

Thank you

DONALD,DONALD,MY DEAR DONALD:Maybe Miss Rosie could have displayed better judgement about what she said on the air----HOWEVER, her point was that she thought you were being a hypocrite--a phony,if you will. This was the basis of her not respecting Star Jones as well.It started with you giving Tara the opportunity to clean herself up,which was a most empowering choice you made-given the season as well as it was creating good karma! WHATEVER Rosie's purpose was in choosing to "go off" on the air, was obviously not thought out carefully--HOWEVER your response actually made the situation worse, but made you look rediculous. I respect both of you for different reasons---Say what you want about Rosie(and BOY you have) whatever she has, she has generated and earned herself--She is what you would call-a self-made woman! And what are her most basic and core values? Being honest and contributing to giving kids a sense of self-esteem and mostly faith in themselves and in life. Maybe if Tara had been "grounded" she might not have had the need to trip out like she did; Bottom line is that I think your reaction was way over the top and you attacked her weight and her appearance whichin the short term got things off your chest, but in the long term made you look a "bissle mishuggy" babe. I am dissapointed in both of you--but YOU more so.......Rosie is a comedian; she's gonna go for the joke-which is what she was doing with the "hair thing"(which,

Mr. Trump, you are 100% right in stating that Rosie is a fat, unattractive and untalented pig.
It is about time someone said it publicly. How she made it on television in the 1st place is beyond the knowledge of anyone. She is a bull dog faced, fat, rude, unfunny loser! She has zero talent and why Barbara would even consider hiring her is unbelievable.
As you said, you had words with Martha, but Martha cannot be compared to Rosie. You stated Martha is about 15 levels higher than Rosie and that is dead on. Martha is a class act, has talent, built her business from the ground up and Rosie is just a disgusting looking, terrible talking lunatic.
She is the type of person that will make your blood pressure sky rocket when you either see her on television or hear her ear bleeding voice. She has a face only a mother can love and she needs waste management in front of her at all times as every time she opens her mouth, it just spews at garbage.
Thank you Mr. Trump for lashing back at her and defending yourself. You have said what millions of people in this world are thinking but do not have the chance to express themselves to such a large audience.
I once saw this tub of lard bring Tom Selleck onto her show and publicly attack him. She threw a sucker punch and followed it with a low blow. Someone NEEDS to take this wannabe fighter out of her profession. She needs to be stripped of any money she has, placed on the street and let her work behind the counter at the local fast food joint. That is where she belongs.
In closing, I am looking forward to seeing your show coming out of California.
Keep fighting the unattractive losers Mr. Trump, you have troops behind you and we will back you up!

Not only is Mr. Trump's advice sound, it works! How do I know? I began doing it with my custom carpentry work.

No more talking myself blue-in-the-face with customers. Now, it's 123 simple:

1.
What would you like me to build?
2.
What type of wood would you like to me build it out of?
3.
This is how much it will cost for the job.

If you want to be successful, then follow the lead of successful people like Donald J. Trump.

Mr. Trump, you have an incredible mind, why would you engage Rosie responding to her attacks? It hurts your image in my opinion. You reacted with emotions, why not with strategies to deal with Rosie. I admire you as a great business person. Your reactions give credibility to other business people who criticize you, like Mark Cuban. Stay focussed on what you do best. Use your Midas touch on people, things, events, and ideas where you will leave positive lasting impressions and results. What's that saying that reads- Small minds talk about other people, and big minds talk about ideas. A friend died yesterday from a heart attack while sleeping. Her two children called for help when they could not wake-up their mother. You know, time is so special, every moment counts. I read your book the Art of the Deal when I was eighteen years old. If I had followed-through with your advice, I would have been set financially and in other ways too. So, I believe in you. You should consider writing a book on the "Art of Overcomming Your Enemies" or add a chapter in "The Art of the Comeback" with "Strategies on how to Manage Your Enemies Publicly". Don't make important what unimportant people say.

Mr. Trump, if you were angry with Rosie O'Donnell for the comments she made about you, you most certainly could have handled it in a more mature, classy way. You struck out at her, commenting on her personal appearance???? How old are you---4 or 5? I believe she must have hit a HUGE nerve when she commented on your fidelity issues. The truth hurts, I am sure, Mr. Trump, but to lash out like a furious child is pathetic...even for someone of your low moral caliber.

I think you did great, afterall you did not start is with that awful Rosie, she needs to keep her mouth shut. You were only defending yourself and what you thought your were doing. Which was a very good thing. If you never got a second chance alot of us wouldnt be here. You need to sue her butt off. And yes it would be fun to watch. Keep up the good work. Mr. Trump: Why don't you follow your own advice? I once liked Rosie when she had her show, until she tricked and cornered Tom Selleck with the NRA issue.
The View made a mistake bringing her in and her actions and comments prove it. Why do you lower yourself to her level with on going stupid comments? Why don't you GET TO THE POINT and shut up and let Rosie continue to make a__ of herself! I thought you'd have better decorum for someone whose supposed to be so smart.

Trumps tirade following Rosie's comedy routine on "The View" gave America a very interesting look at the REAL Donald Trump. We know Rosie is a comedian and is being paid to do her routine on the View. Trump, on the other hand...we thought was a business man, money-mogul, and mentor to young american entreprenuers on his hit show, The Apprentice. What we now know is that "The Donald" is just a bully and a pretty creepy guy. America doesn't want any more business men like you, Donald. Listen closely when The Apprentice tanks in the ratings and NBC says to you: Donald, You're Fired!

In my training which I conducted for management consultants, I advocated a lot on the importance of the "elevator pitch" and we always stick to the 5 minutes rule in any presentation. However I think the 3 or 5 minute rule must be used in context. For example in Asia (for which I'm located), Asian entrepreneurs prefer more in-depth presentation and would equate short presentation as in-sincere. Thus the key is not in the amount of time used (i.e. 3 or 5 minutes) but rather in THE MANNER an idea is presented. It have to be Precise, Specific, Clear and Short, in the words of Mr. Trump " Whatever you do, keep it short, fast, and right to the point." - Another great insights from a great man.

I never had much of an opinion about you but since this public feud with Rosie, you have come out as the ultimate loser. You have proven yourself as nothing more than an egotistic, insecure, loathesome mysoginist. If she's so worthless in your eyes, why bother devoting your precious time lambasting her in public? oops. that was me. i wrote a comment about the American flag. I got pissed. When I get mad I go straight for legal codes, I wrote to much. The real issue is that as long as it does not harm anyone the Government has no right to control property on private property. The flag is amazing, shows your pride, patriotism and loyalty to our country. Besides its not the Chinese flag, or the Russian flag, so the council has no right to control it.

Donald I think that because of your public battle with Rosie you are greatly tarnishing your image. A leader does not go into the trenches to generate publicity for themselves the way you have. Do you honestly think that Gates or Buffet would sink to that level. Follow some of your peers and the way they conduct themselves. One other major point of advice I will give you is stop telling everyone you are going to sue them. You are looking very petty in the business comunity. You have done some good things so lets get back on track before the public deams you a has been.

Mr. Trump,

look, try to understand you with an outside eye, look at what you*ve done
and at least look live at the abc internet programs, pleaaase!! Don*t go in with that Rosie wolf! You know, some people live theyre life with they*re principles good or bad no matter as much they fight for the good, surrounding what they love with all the power they have!! live the life with the fire in is a double edge mirror, the love you put in your fight can somehow burden, not becouse of you, you know, becouse of surroundings... Is not about give the foult to the surroundings, noo, is much triest the story..and as much I love to change the classic unhappy story*es into other new with happy end, let me tell you another secret. Some people are givers, and some peoples are receivers. Peoples who care the fire inside are loial trustfully ones carying people which walk the hardest path for theyre dears to welcome them at the softly deadline and make them believe the succes was theyre!!
The receivers are happy and many of them no aware about the path somebody else walked on to do it silky..Unfortunattely, sometimes and many times happend a strange effect, the mirror effect which I recognize it today looking at the abc news, your words on the phone and that Rosie monkey sweating show, disgusting! With mirror effect I mean that are people unable to compete themselfwith a base of own principles, no matter how good or bad, we are humans so under law of errs too, but such peoples as Rosie try to mirror them in people with fire within, and you know what?! They are not able to ever dream or act the way you do, the results spoke for themself buut, they try the shortcut attacking you in your principle in what matter to you at most, and that second they provoke the overeaction in you that single second they make you dirty as theyre colour! I call this the simbiosis of the mad. Is a very quickly sneaky catch. They are glittering iron pretending to be gold, shinning outside come front of you with theyre words and savour the revenge they provoke in you..Can you see it?! Thousends or one important thing you*ve made in your life no matter when such monkey*s catch you that way! They*ve scored
for long ago what make you bloody and attack you glittering and smiling, coveringthey*re iron base, they catch you that way and sometimes succeed soo gratis!! To make the war is easy but who make the peace Mr. Trump? What is the most important for you? Persons as Rosie
the Earth and God know the best how manny as she is support them that way, GO OUT from that battle!! This person did*t desearve one single word of you!! Your words and knowledge are pearls able to change the life foor too many people which are able to receive them with the respect and joy they desearve. Avoid that person, please, ignore her!! Let his small glittering show go on and don*t go in!! Pigs with pigs, don*t desearve your attention, they will make you appear dirty as they are!! They live from this!!!
If the object of they*re venom is not available for them, they will calm them self one day. Each mirror have 2 faces, one good and one bad, as win and yang :))
They push the yang buttons, and what?!Nobody can pretend is good or saint!! We accept our bad side as we learn from our mistakes and walk carefully caring the fire within..Smile please and let Rosie to warm his soul at his small flame, is the best elegant way to ignore her simply!! In Roumania we have a nice tradition in Eastern times, at 12 o¨clock in the night the priest go front of the church and in hand with a staff(I mean one as a sheephook one :)) touch the Earth 3 times and say:Open the doors of the Heaven!! don*t laugh please, as a child is a veery nice to see it :)) and you know what? the magic start: he share the light of his big candle he care in hand with, all the people come there with they*re small candle to catch the light, a nice symbol, receive the light of God, and care it insight as good they can the whole year and the ne

I would first like to inform you of purchasing my membership into The Trump Advantage Club. Along with my recent trademark application and domain name in place, along with the tools of your Trump University Recourses I feel more excited and encouraged knowing that through your university resources, my own visions of a dream has the same kind of potential to reach a level many others have in this country.
Secondly, with great respect to your Mar-A-Lago flag issue and your perfect response and answer of your patriotism. I recently responded to an ignorant post where the individual referred to himself as David from Goliath. Bravo for you sir, to stand up and fly the colors so bravely for all of us with the same conviction our forefathers did for us. You sir are David fighting against Goliath and we thank you.

Trump I don't know why I'm writing this in your blog. It should be Associated Press. But here goes. I was reading a news story about Ritchie Calvin Davis of Fern Park FL. It seems he's a kid who gets into trouble. Accused of a break-in at the United Way office, the local paper reported. But what got him busted was he stole a bus awaiting auction from the Central Florida Fairgrounds in Orlando. He then drove the bus at normal speeds, making all the appropriate stops on the route. Note: ON THE ROUTE. COLLECTING FARES along the way. If this is legit and not a scam. I LIKE THIS KID!!! Granted he's breaking the law, but look at the imagination. Thye ability. Actually, even if he's trying to scam. I LIKE THIS KID!! Now this to me is Getting Right To The Point. Someone needs to pick this kid up and get him going in the right direction. Channel that imagination, that ability for HIS good not thiers and I don't mean the church. He has potential. Hope you had a happy holiday.

The essence of blog-etiquette is neither to edit nor to exclude anyone's responses. My email to Trump's blog of a few days ago was not published.
Generally, my comments were not laudatory of the egomaniac known as Trump...a dispicable, "win-at-all-costs", swelled head. The only way he gets away with his boorishness is that many of the hangers-ons are enamoured

Is that why your vocabulary is so limited?

Take some of your own advice and try practicing your delivery before you do another interview and spew your own verbal junk.

An important thing in business and in life is taking the time to listen to other people. Please stop talking so much about yourself.

Are you really so busy? You seem to have alot of time for press conferences, interviews, filling in for Regis or Kelly and flying down to Palm Beach. Try standing in a soup kitchen and feeding a family and then tell me you are a busy man.

You've let down alot of people!

Its amazing, you talk about how to speak professionally, yet you are on national TV referring to Rosie as 'fat'and'ugly', your behaviour is discusting. If you didn't like what she had to say, it would have been more professional to say nothing, instead of going into a rant and triad of abuse. For a businessman and a celebrity you are too sensitive. If you can't handle the fire, get out of the kitchen.

Dear Mr. Trump,
I found your advice to be very helpful. I have a tendency to run my mouth off every now and again, and I've never realized how boring it could sound like. If it's not too late, I'd like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas.

Yes, that is truly great advice. I have a natural tendency to be less concise than I want to be, and spend a lot of energy disciplining myself to keep things concise. I can see the origin in my own background, but that doesn't change the psychic energy it takes! I know of other highly intelligent and competent people who have to overcome the same. Do you know of any high quality resources to help to entrain a concise style of communication? Thanks! Ati

Donald, you are inspiration to a lot of us. Which is one of the reasons I tagged you:

Once again I saw this heading on an advertisement and it fits.

"Witness the Birth of an Empire."

Donald,

I've just been reading about Trump Home. What an excellent idea.

Wasn't it Mark Twain that said "If I'd had more time, I'd have written a shorter novel"? That is what I love about poetry - thoughts reduced to essence. Keep it simple. Have you ever read the essay "Appetite"? I embrace the message. The first bite is oh so sweet, savor the flavor, but stop before eating your fill so that you hunger for more. That is good advice. Always leave enough unsaid to make the audience want more.

I've heard God gave us one mouth and two ears so we could listen twice as much as we speak.
