The Apprentice: What I Learned from Episode One

Only minutes into the season's first episode last night, Donald J. Trump stunned the contestants by asking them to build a tent in the backyard of his LA mansion. He hardly knew the contestants - they had only given him their names and professional credentials. He hadn't even divided them into teams.

They were probably expecting a task like those that the teams tackled last year, like launching a new video game in a WalMart or planning a charity fundraiser. Instead, they faced a cardboard box packed with a canvas tent and tent poles. They looked as stunned and confused as steers at a cattle auction.

But as they opened the box and got started, the wisdom of Mr. Trump's task hit me. I saw that he had given the contestants a task that offered each of them just two choices. Each contestant could look like a follower by waiting for instructions. Or each contestant could step out aggressively, take charge and alienate everyone else, only minutes into the new season.

Two of the contestants took the second of those choices. Heidi did her best to take control in a positive way. She said that she had camping experience and started giving guidance about how to get the tent built. But then Frank, another contestant, realized that he was losing his chance to shine. Whistling and shouting instructions, he staged a sickening grab for power. He was so loud and obnoxious that he disturbed Mr. Trump in his distant vantage place high in the mansion.

As these events unfolded, I realized that the tent-building task was a subtle and brilliant assignment from Mr. Trump. In fact, it offered the contestants the same challenges that all of us face early in our careers.

As you start on your path to success, you can wait and watch and learn from others, which makes you look unambitious for a while. Or you can shoulder ahead of your peers, which makes you look too ambitious and aggressive.

Those are two options that all of us must consider early on in our careers. And temporarily, both of them make you look bad.

Thanks to their assertiveness, Heidi and Frank gained an immediate edge over the other contestants when Mr. Trump selected them as team leaders for this week's main task: To run a car wash for the day, with the higher-earning team becoming the winner.

Both teams bungled that assignment badly. In the limited time she had, Heidi couldn't generate any traction from her team. Frank was a lot worse, and his lower-earning team lost the challenge. He should have been fired for his obnoxious attitude, for disappearing when he should have been leading strategically and for poisoning his team's spirit with his vicious backbiting.

In the end, a contestant named Martin was fired because of some ill-chosen statements he made. The first thing he said to Donald J. Trump - to Donald J. Trump! - was that he would like to hug Mr. Trump, but that he needed to go to the bathroom first. (!?!?!). Then later in the show, Martin seemed even dumber when he told Ivanka that he felt tired. (Why not just walk up to her and say, --Please fire me NOW!)

But to tell you the truth, I am not sure I learned too much from the carwash task. I learned a lot more from the tent-building assignment.

It reminded me that leadership is not something you can achieve in your first ten minutes on a job. It takes months, even years. Sometimes you take the lead, sometimes you show that you are a good colleague. And at all times, you display a positive attitude.

Rome, the old saying goes, wasn't built in a day. Neither is success. I believe that we will see that principle at work in the weeks to come, as the real leaders rise to the top. I think that Carey, Heidi, Muna, Nicole and Tim all have what it takes to make that happen.

In the weeks to come, we'll all find out who stands and who falls in this ultimate job interview. I can't wait to watch and find out. And I bet you can't either.

"I think it was a warning call ... of what it can do,"

I read this quote on foxnews.com concerning the 1-4-07 Superheated ash and lava visible inside the cone of the Soufriere Hills volcano, Olveston, Montserrat. I THINK IT FITS.

I have seen every episode of the Apprentice so far, but last night was probably my breaking point. I am talking about commercials! After about half way through the show, you started showing 4 minutes of Apprentice, followed

The first episode comes on the heels of the Dondald/Rosie rift (or should I say garbage?) I would expect the comments we've listened too from Rosie, but have expected more from Donald. After he made his initial comeback he should have been man enough to have let it lie, held his head high and moved forward before he dragged his family in and continued the rift. He would have been respected for this. As he's handling it now, it's become very undignified for a man of his stature. Notice i said man and not "gentleman". After last night's Apprentice (first episode) I would never refer to him as a gentleman. He had his daughter on one side of him and Heidi on the other, both ladies (not to mention the ladies in his television audience, of which I consider myself). It was most offensive when he picked up the phone to summon Frank, Martin and Tim back into the boardroom

Hated the tent thing. These folks are supposed to be one of your employees at some point. I thought it nice to have them in a nice setting but both my husband and I hated the tent thing. We were very disappointed with this episode and if we get more of this, we will UN-TIVO Apprentice. Sorry. We like Trump a lot otherwise.

The key to watching the Apprentice is to observe and assess personality types in action under stress. When personalities are put into a competative situation, in a sense for survival of ego, their true colors show through of what characteristics one will be dealing with in a average working situation. We can learn alot about people just

After watching the show 2 1/2 times on Sunday, it only became more obvious if none of the men start to get on the ball, it will be Heidi and Stefani for the final 2.

Mr. Quintal,

perhaps is better to come back at finish well what I*ve started, but from yesterday I burden inside a felling that something is missing in heaven, with your permission...I*ve looked at the final meeting and the class Mr. Trump gaved once more..Martin philosopher..have done some papers as Frank was absent..but both have quality*s...look, perhaps Andrea Lake spoke about joining the apprentice once more, she said, SURE!! When The Aprrentice All Stars Series will have place...I would be courious after how many time will take that Special Edition place? All Stars mean the whole Teams...I don*t know why I will be curious to see how the time reveal the class Mr. Trump gaved to each one of them as seed, how the time will grow that seed or loose it

I watch Donald's show, to learn from real people, in real situations. If you choose not to watch the show, because of your perception of Donald, then it is your loss. I did say it is your perception, so look within and see what your inner judge has to say, about you. This exercise is painful, but also has many rewards. Food for thought. farm girl, Yelm, WA.

NEPOTISM at its finest... No Carolyn..Do you think that someone in the Trump organization has more experience and is more deserving to fill Carolyn's shoes than his daughter GIVE ME A BREAK
NEPOTISM is a discrace you have fired Carolyn because she was becoming popular and sucessfull.. I guess when you Preach success Mr Trump you want it for your self and your children....Nepotism you should be ashamed of yourself..

I called Martin out from the get go. His behavior from the very beginning of giving Mr. Trump a hug if he could go to the bathroom was an exercise in poor timing and judgment. He just stood around while the others put up the tent. He was just an order taker at his team's car wash and did not not even try to upsell the customers which he was supposed to do. If he did not get that, then how could he work for the Trump Organization? Frank's big mouth can be addressed as they proceed. For this show, Frank's energetic selling of himself was overdone. I appreciate his gusto, but I question his abilities as a leader. If Frank did not learn from the first episode, he will be gone fairly soon.

I was not impressed with the first episode. I thought the Apprentice was supposed to be a competitive show where you found out who could be persistent, ambitious, trustworthy, and all the other qualities necessary to become a great entreprenuer. Now it's just like survivor. The tent thing completely took the quality away from the show. And now that Carolyn is gone, the show won't be as good anyway. I really admired Donald Trump and his success until he made those comments about Rosie. I am not necessarily a Rosie fan, but Donald Trump expressed the actions of a two year old child. In fact, even a two year old knows not to call people ugly and fat. That is beyond low.

On a more positive note, there are some extremely talented people on this seasons Apprentice. I really liked Angela. To me she seemed like someone who could take the lead, but who first wanted to work her way up. I also think Heidi would make a great employee(from what I've seen so far). This should be an intresting season.

Donald Trump, I truly enjoy the apprentice.
However I am 53 years old in a wheelchair and got my B.A. degree May of 2006, currently I am in a graduate program at Calif State University Dominguez hills. I sincerely hope that one day I will get to meet and speak with you, even though I am in a wheelchair I still know I can be an asset to your apprentice show and but heads with the best of them. I worked for the IRS for 25 years as a Revenue Officer. My husband and I are attending a show here in Los Angeles that your son is doing. I am a Scorpio born November 6th 1953. As far as Rosie O'Connell you can handle it.

Good Luck,

Maybe one day I will get to meet you and learn about yoursecretsd for wealth.

I think the tent assignment is fantastic! Who is going to work harder for the position of apprentice than those 'under the gun'. If you live cozy, you don't work hard - if everything is handed to you - you slack off. OK, not everyone, but a good portion of people do. If you really want something bad enough, you'll struggle and fight to achieve. How many times have we seen someone sit back and not do anything when they have been given the privilege to be safe from the next boardroom when they won as a project manager - and how many times did they sit back and take it easy because they were safe? Light a fire! It would be a privilege to work with Mr. Trump and it should be perceived as such. He wants the very best and wants to know you'll do what ever it takes. I don't think this is too much to ask. I am an entrepreneur and watch the show to gain business knowledge. It is entertaining - and very educational. A+ to the Apprentice. I can't wait for the next episode! P.S. After the season with the Canadian, I hope we aren't all painted with that brush. We're not all that obnoxious.

I love the Apprentice and enjoy the "lessons I learned", especially now that I am taking my MBA classes. The first episode was genius -- tent building. What a great idea for a company to do a "team building" idea with tent building project. I agree with Paul about his comments on leadership -- there is a balance of strategy as to how one should act within the first 10 minutes. There is no definite answer, because it depends on the who, where, what and when circumstances. I can't wait for the next episode. You've got me hooked!

I truly felt it necessary to type this email. I do not normally voice my opinions on reality tv. That being said, I pride myself in being a professional.

Having worked in small to large corporate settings, I found myself in utter disbelief at the decision to "fire" Martin or Frank.

Had I been Mr. Trump, and having seen the reaction of Frank to the firing of Martin, I would have immediately reversed my decision and fired Frank.

I base this on a fundamental professional etiquette. No one expected to take on the role of "apprentice" in an organization the size of the Trump organization should be able to grin and voice enthusiasm and the release of any team member. This was completely unprofessional and entirely unethical.

Martin may not have been, or would not have turned out to be a good fit with the organization, however I am confident that he would not have been so immature as to visibly express excitement at the demise of a colleague's opportunities.

I feel that it should have come down to Frank, Project Manager, or Tim, Sales lead. The both should have been cognizant of the abilities of each of the team members and assigned and reassigned based on strenghth and weakness. Once it was determined that Martin was the weak link, an immediate change would have been in order, instead of continuing to monitor a situation that was clearly failing. On that same note it would have been appropriate for Martin to acknowledge and request a change in his role when he recognized he was not Upselling at a reasonable rate.

This is my opinion and I would welcome seeing Martin rejoin the group, or the firing of Martin immediately for unprofessional behaviour.

I have been a regular viewer of "The Apprentice" since its inception. It has been fascinating to observe the dynamics of human behavior in each season's group of elite candidates. Since viewing Episode One of Season 6 on Monday night, I have been nagged

I watch the Apprentice because it inspires me to be a better person everyday. The tasks given my Mr. Trump has valuable lessons to learn in terms of leadership and being able to manage a task while motivating your team members to achieve the same. I, at times see my weaknesses in those participants and I must truly, truly say it is a great learning experience for me that I can contemplate on everyday.

Having been a Apprentice fan from the beginning this season was a huge disappointment for me. I used to think that the show had some real life learning exeriperiences that I could and have used. But this tent thing is just ridiculous. And having his daughter on the show with her vast knowledge of youth has proven worthless. Good

Sir,

Far be it for a simple lawyer and communications consultant from Canada to provide advice. Nonetheless, Mr Trump, having recently bested certain adversaries, ought to build a tent in THEIR back yard.

He should start his own talk show. We will all watch. So will they.

I thought the first episode was brilliant! Living in a tent city, as so many Americans who have dealt with disasters have had to do, really reveals character. I love it! SO WHAT if they have to sleep outside or do without conveniences? They are trying to prove their strengths and what better way than to suck it up and make it work. I do agree, though, that I would have fired both Frank and Martin. Martin was arrogant and Frank was obnoxious. Neither would be welcomed in any company of mine. People skills are vital and knowing whent to speak and when to be quiet are qualities of true professionals.

Anyway I found this headline in the news section of the headline news off my home page.
It reads ----> " The Model of Insanity "

It seems I needed to place it here for some reason. I'll have to read the article again and find out why.

See ya,

This show reminds me of Organizational Behavior courses. It's amazing how much you can learn about yourself and interaction with others through this.
