Now that this season’s final Apprentice task has been completed, everybody seems to be asking who the strongest candidate is. But I would like to ask a slightly different question:

Which candidate grew the most during the season?

To me, that’s a more interesting question. And I think that the answer is pretty clear. Actually, there are two answers, because Frank and James showed the greatest growth this season. I don’t think it is a coincidence that they also are now part of the final four.

If you think back to the early episodes this season, you will remember that James brought amazing energy to every task that was put in front of him. But at that point, he contented himself with following directions, not moving out of the pack. His leadership potential only began to shine when he started managing projects for his team. Then it became obvious that he was great at understanding and balancing the strengths of his teammates.

And James kept growing. In last night’s episode, he stepped into the role of director for his team’s commercial. He made mistakes, but that is bound to happen when people take risks. When you look at the progress that James has made, you know that his potential is practically boundless.

Frank’s growth has been extraordinary too. Early in the season, he looked like someone who could follow directions, but whose leadership was a little on the short side. Then suddenly, that changed. He spoke up and challenged his team’s plans when no one else had the guts. Then last night, Frank jumped in and directed his team’s commercial with a lot of energy and finesse. There is so much depth to the guy.

Does all that growth mean that Frank and James are now more likely to win than Stefani or Nicole? In my opinion, it could well be.

Maybe that is unfair, because those are two very capable women. Stefani shoulders her responsibilities with assurance and calm. She is poised and polished, even under fire. Nicole is a firebrand who makes some questionable decisions - such as inviting Tim back onto her team last night. But she is smart, quick and electric. Wouldn’t you want her on your team?

But does slow and steady really win the race? Or will James and Frank, the candidates who showed a growth spurt, have the advantage?

Next week when Mr. Trump picks his Apprentice, we will know. But let me say that most of the big winners I have known in my career have been people who take big risks. Maybe that is because people who can grow are always chosen to lead.

Mr. Trump, It is quite clear from watching Frank's performance week after week that he has a lot of growing up to do. He is very hot headed, does not seem to know what he's doing and quite often flies by the seat of his pants. As an Asst. Mgr. I would not pick him to work at our establishment just due to how he interacts with his team mates. Do you watch the episodes? Maybe it's a guy thing and you can't see it but I would not recommend him. James is the one I would grab. I'll stay tuned to see if you have made the right decision. Good luck! P.S. I love your show.

Week 13: My comment is the result from last night's episode/task. I think James and Stepanie nailed it because during their commercial the actor stated all the components the product was supposed to do where as Frankie and Nicole's actor(s) stated "it only eliminates odors". Both teams were able to ask the executives questions pertaining to the product and its target audience. So, in a nut shell, one team hit the mark, and the other team missed it. With that said, I do think Tim and Nicole's commercial was funny, but I would have expected them not to forget mentioning two crucial components that the product was able to do....I think some contestants grew more than others. This is why I would recommend to have a different project manager (PM) each week. For someone to be appointed the next apprentice without having his/her abilities showcased as a PM, isn't fair to the contestants who were and proved himself/herself while doing so.......rickyl

Greetings Mr. Quintal,

Reading your columns with great interest, I have to wonder what it is that you, Mr. Trump and the rest of your group see in Frank? You guys seem to be so high on him but it makes me wonder if you all are seeing the same footage that is being shown on television? What is it that you all are getting to see that we aren't?

I think Frank should have been gone long ago, but somehow he has slipped though. But a large part of it may be the inconsistent way Mr. Trump decides to fire the other hopefuls. What is worse, getting a phone number wrong or sleeping through the entire process and leaving someone else to do all the work? Yet the person doing the work got fired with no rebuttal allowed. One week a person is verbose and fighting for their life and they are let go for being annoying. The next, another is being praised for being " a fighter". The one thing you can count on is whoever is sitting at Mr Trump's side is 100 percent on board with whatever decision is made. Since the show started, I cannot look to one instance where there was a disagreement over this. That in itself is pretty lame.

We all know that if you don't have a college education, you might as well not even apply to be on The Apprentice. It's also stupid to be a Project Leader early in the process. You might as well just paint a big red target on your chest.

I have to say that after all the postings I have made this year out here, I am finding the show / competition a bit high brow and boring. The Sean coming out here and bragging about how he managed to flirt better than the people this year, it really makes me wonder what it is you are trying to get across.

RUMINATIONS FROM ANDREW WEE
I have been an avid follower of the Apprentice series, because of the inter-play of different personalities, strengths, capabilities, and more so due to the various lessons we can learn from it. Not the least because it is a psychological thriller to me as well.

The recent episode was quite a shock to me. The projects were on a much smaller scale compared to the ones in the previous Apprentice seasons. I can only reason that there were fewer large-scale projects to be found for this season in Los Angeles. I am also surprised that there are four contenders for the finale. After all, in my opinion, the Apprentice to be hired is clear : James.

He had been able to staff his project team well, and knew how to capitalise on his strengths and those of others. He has strong interpersonal and team skills - notice that he always acknowledges the efforts of his team players and sings their praises in front of others; yet when the appropriate time comes, he will counsel others and stand up for his beliefs. He is passionate, opinionated, reasonable and a smart thinker as well.

The only other (weaker) contender is Stephanie. She is a very intelligent, polished and articulate professional. Unfortunately, we have not had the chance to see her shine in a leadership, creative nor business role.

Therein lies the weaknesses in the design of this season of The Apprentice. We as viewers don't care to see the losing team suffering in the dreary outdoors. What I personally like to see more in next season's Apprentice are:

a)Credentials and achievements of each candidate
b) At least one opportunity for each candidate to lead
c) More challenging and interesting variety of tasks each week instead of producing product advertisements
d) Bigger scale projects for the final 2 contenders

I am sorry that time has flown so quickly and we'll be watching the finale next week. It doesn't help that it's so clear to me as to who will be hired...all right, I'll be somewhat surprised if Stephanie gets hired as well. But if that happens, Trump will be guilty of having double standards as he did not hire Rebecca in the season when he hired Randall !

Enjoy the finale, everyone.

In my opinion Heidi and Frank are the best candidates. Since Mr. Trump fired Heidi last week, now the most predictable Apprentice is Frank. He has a "can-do" attitude that Ivanka and Mr. Trump like.

I just have to mention the fact that Heidi, in my opinion, was the best suited to do business for Mr. Trump. I don't know what happened with her at the last task, but she was really strong and I wish her a lot of success in her professional career.

James isn't really skilled and I think that his lidership style is too overrated. he just happened to be in a very border line team with lots of contrasts and lots of battles - that's why he looks a little bit smarter, but he isn't at all.

Nicole after the Arnold dinner looks like a fire bird of motivation and driven enthusiasm. I still can't say if she has the substance, but we shall see.

Oh..and I almost forgot. I believe that the PM role constraint is a BAD idea for the show and for the knowledge transparency of every candidate or their lidership style.

Let's see who's gonna be the next Apprentice. (right now I'm watching the apprentice UK and it's so much better...no wonder that Sean Yazbeck was such a strong candidate)

Mr. Trump, Clear to me on who should be the Apprentice. Frank is the man for the job. I deal with people like him on daily basis and the amount of devotion and pride put forth in his tasks will be a great asset to the trump org. If in this round you are looking for the "Brooklyn Brawler" the you have found him.

Thanks,
Todd

Frank win the job? Are you kidding me?

Got one poster talking about Heidi and Frank being the best two candidates (that speaks volumes about judgement) and now Todd saying Frank is the best, makes me wonder which network you all were watching this season because you sure weren't watching The Apprentice.

LOUD doesn't mean good. ANNOYING doesn't equate to skill. But just as Todd referred to it, I too have worked with people like Frank. I personally do not like working with people like Frank. I would not employ someone like Frank.

I will give Frank an A+ in effort for deflecting blame from himself though.

If he somehow manages to pull this out and gets selected, then that will be the second "Apprentice" I couldn't stand to watch and pretty much it for me and this show.

Mr Trump, I look back to comments that you have made in "The Art of the Deal" ...about your business (contracting/developing) being a tough business full of tough people. That being said, Frank certainly stepped up a few board meetings ago and showed that he WON"T be pushed around! If you want an apprentice that will be "on site"...look no further than what your son said..."I would be proud to have Frank on any or our job sites."

I'd like to be the first to congratulate James Sun on his win. The episode airs in a couple hours but I think it's obvious now. He has been the stand out this season. Nice work, James.

What I meant to say was James Sun should have won. At least by what they show you on TV. Apparently Mr, Trump had some information I wasn't privy to when he said James had said some questionable things. Much success to all of the candidates!

Stefani? Really? If she's going to join the Trump Organization, she has got to step up to the plate. She's an extremely talanted individual, no doubt about it. But at some point you have to put yourself out there and take on the risk. Getting along with everyone is not the way to approach your life, or your business. It's great when eveyone gets along, but that's not what you're there for.
Peace.

Perhaps the title of this article should have been - An Apprentice Lesson: Risk-Takers Always Win... Except For This Season When The Non-Risk-Taker Won

I know you can't go back and change it now. It was just a thought
