Back in the early 1990s, Donald J. Trump stirred up a big controversy in Phoenix, Arizona. He wanted to build a luxury high-rise residential building on Camelback Road between 24th and 32nd Streets - one of the most sought-after locations in Phoenix.

The problem was, Donald wanted to put up the tallest building in the city, and there were height restrictions. A controversy about the building raged for several years. Then in 1995, residents of the area voted that he would not be allowed to build his building.

To the astonishment of many people, Donald simply pulled out and did not pursue the matter further.

Some months later while we were working on our book, Why We Want You to Be Rich, our conversation turned to what had happened in Phoenix. And interesting to note, Donald was not disappointed in the outcome.

“If I can’t build the tallest and best building, I don’t want to build,” he said. Plus at the time he was working on something even bigger and better, a spectacular new building in Dubai. “Why should I be upset with Phoenix when I am working on this?” he said.

DDonald could have battled on in Phoenix, won permission to build something smaller, and still made a lot of money from the project. But instead, he preferred to pursue larger dreams in real estate investing.

That underlying philosophy that Donald applied in Phoenix - to pursue the biggest dream you can and not compromise - is also the thesis of our book:

You succeed in life by pursuing big wins, not by avoiding small losses.

How can you apply that philosophy to your life? After all, you probably aren't concerned with building the tallest building in the city where you live. But remember, it is never too early to pursue the biggest dreams you can and to express high standards.

Even small properties can express lofty visions. And that is the way to success.

A great insight! Playing to Win.

True endurance starts when you are in competition with yourself, to win your prize. Never compromise that big goal.

More than one way to do something. And more than just one project to complete. Think about the big picture. Playing to Win.

Mr Trump,
about past Phoenix issue regarding the acceptance of the proposed height 190feet development
May we persuade the officials to grant a waiver for the 140ft and accept it at 250ft…
Camelback Road I*ve seen it on internet, it seems no area with historical treasures, is a large one permitting development , it appear that last february the Coucil Decision take in consideration the future demands of housing and entertainment the downtown city provide..as we present the actual demographic reports and as by NY Star plan until 2030 the growth predictability, than we may persuade from the sustainability development contribution we create by develop that way, hmm, perhaps we may include the some conservation easement for the city, generating not directly money but value, water of build green inclusief the freon apparatures of air conditioning, changed by alternatiefs in order to reduce the largest small polutant of the air but if we count how many houses and restaurants used, the statistiks are tremedous about the summit of freon impact….:)

Dubai with his zero property and income tax...and his An Abra taxi river like in Venice :)

Congratulations for the Palm Tower in Dubai and cooperation with Nakheel Corporation, it will be the new sales record of condominiums, isn*t? in 8 hours the 500 units, really in 72 hours they sale there more tahn 2000 villas is an unmatched standard of living, tourism and development opportunity*s.
Succes further,
Daniela

Brought to my attention many times and comically too is the fact in school bee's and books there are an awful lot to misselling going on. For instance tourism, terriorism Take IT from there.

The article "Play to Win" shares an excellent real life example of how to stay focused in business. There's a time to fight and a time to walk away. So often, people in business lose sight of this principle, myself included. There is an art to knowing WHEN and HOW to fight. There is also an art to knowing WHEN and HOW to walk away. Sometimes the best energy spent is the energy required to cut our losses and move on. When we do move on, it's important to do it with style.

I love Mr. Trumps attitude of excellence in everything he does. He inspires me to do the same with the next phase of my life. I plan to start where I am, and do my best from this day forward. Dream bigger, and to do great things with my life. Thank you!

Greetings Mr. Trump.: Having the biggest dream, and building the tallest sky rise, is in, and of itself a challenge. Equally, it is quite a challenge filing those sky rises with long term leases.

My compliments to you on that beautiful sky rise in Dubai. I like unique, but functional architecture. Both Dubai and Palm CIty represent arcitecture at it's finest.

Mary Pominville

Ps: I've read both your books and Richard Kawasaki's books.

Good evening Mr. Trump, I like the article "Play to Win". It can make it clear to many people not to give up on the dreams they have and the goals they are willing to pursue. One of the dreams I had and still have was to meet you in person. You might ask yourself why, and find it a stupid request, but it has been a goal of mine to meet you. I am from a country called Suriname, the country above Brazil and between Guyana, French Guyana and the Atlantic Ocean. Ever since I first saw your show "The Apprentice" I liked it, and you seemed to be an interesting personality, and that's what intrigued me, I tried finding ways on the net to find a way to meet you and this seemed to be the closest I had and that's why I joined this group. I hope you consider it and could get back to me.

Hi
I really wish Mr.Trump would see this comment:
There is a want for some one to build a tallest tower on the planet earth
I wish whole heartedly Mr.Trump gets into this challenge as he is the only one with whole heartedly give life to the tower.
Prasanna.

Some times we are so conceren with how I look , what people think ,or what someone said about me .That our hole life becomes what someone else wants. To be a leader of anything you must first have a vision, then the will to pursue .Know one can teach wisdom all anyone can do is provide you with the tools for success . But it is going to take something from you, dream big and then dream how to get there. Beloved...

Wooow Woow wooow
this is a great reminder to all of us because
So many times happens that we concentrate on the small losses that we do every day, while targeting to get to big wins, and if we continue on these small losses we not only get them better but we might also lose the big wins we are targeting.
I will not forget
You succeed in life by pursuing big wins, not by avoiding small losses.
Because the small l osses are there nad are coming and going however the big picture which is the big win should be focus to be reached.

Truth or Dare? Absolutely.

ps you should blog that Mother's thing on Meredith's memo because it's true. Actually i could have done more bragg'n about myself but I don't want anyone to get their nose outta joint.

besides that it's just one person's comment which is worth more than some of the fictional novels you post

I'm glad to see your keeping your hands together. A little praying never hurt anyone.

You'll have to bend a little when you sign over half your fortune however.

Just think of how splendid that investment will sky rocket though!

When I first read this post, I was astonished! I always thought we should move ahead towards what we wanted... While that's half true, the other half of the truth is to move on and get BIGGER!

If I were you in that situation, I always thought of getting my way round to get what I wanted... Perhaps a shorter building as a way of negotiation of giving in... Or even a creative way of getting my way through... NO, you didn't choose that way... Instead you respect them and move on with your dream somewhere else... What a move! Furthermore, it's an even bigger dream!

Mr Trump, you've taught me a lesson in my career... Thank you!

Absolutely -if the door does not open that way - don't shove it! That's not the law of attraction.

Anyhow - there is a typo in the word city. I know everyone sees it, but it's like a light switch put on upside down - sure it works, but it's not pretty.

What am I attracting by saying so? Maybe excellence! We'll see!

Good business to you all.

You are right :-) we really should keep the green on our planet. America still has green land for farms and cattle at least this is what I see, but , yes modern man is moveing in so I might say someday I suppose they are searching for satisfaction in their lives.

There is a magnet on my refridgerator that shows a soaring eagle. It says "If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way." When you stop to think about it, even the greatest of people do this. Mother Theresa didn't build large buildings. She did small things like kind words, or smiles, a gentle touch, a helping hand, but she did them day after day, and it wasn't the size, it was the volume. The grandiose things are actually the cumulative result of the individual small steps. I believe true greatness comes from finding and fulfilling your own personal purpose, and asking yourself is the world a better place because you are here?
