Two Marketing Mistakes that Kill New Businesses

What are the most disastrous marketing mistakes that new entrepreneurs make? Now that our Marketing Mastery Program is entering its second successful year and we have worked with hundreds of students, we can answer that question with some certainty.

The two marketing problems that most new entrepreneurs need to overcome are cockiness and laziness. Let’s take a closer look.

Cockiness - You can hear this attitude in the words of one student who told Professor Don Sexton, “I don’t need to worry about marketing. People would be crazy not to buy my product.” That’s backwards thinking - or worse. People will never be crazy about your product or service until you make them feel that way. And that demands great marketing. You can also hear cockiness in the words of another student who said, “I spent so much time and money to develop this great product that it just cannot fail.” Great products do fail. Only good marketing makes them succeed.

Laziness - You can hear this attitude in the words of the student who said, “I’m too busy raising money to get to know my customers. Can’t I just hire a sales staff and turn them loose?” The fact is, marketing is hard work. You can’t hide from it. You need to study your competition and find ways to differentiate yourself. You need to talk with your customers and understand how your business can serve their needs. You need to identify targeted marketing channels and use them to reach your customers. And in the early stages of building a company, doing it all well is your job. You can’t just push one magic button and expect the money to start rolling in.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, more than 550,000 small businesses will close their doors this year and give up. If you don’t want to join their ranks, learn the skills you need to succeed in The Marketing Mastery Program from Trump University.

Michael,

I agree with you 100%

As you know, I took the first part of the Marketing Mastery course
( Building a Powerful Marketing Strategy)

I was amazed with this course because it opened my eyes to looking at everything I did from a whole new perspective. Branding and marketing are two of the most important things that are not only part of the initial planning but must be a constant through out your business forever.

I can honestly say with confidence that I am completely evaluating my entire business all over again and pluging in what I have learned from the course. You have to constantly be aware of your entire surroundings and that continuing evaluation process must go on. Never think that tomorrow will be the same as today.

A great article! Stay focus and you will want to earn that path. Sometimes, you need to improvise the marketing but it is a strategy that wins.

Earn that patth and have fun doing it!

Dear Mr. Sexton,

Another great article.
Frankly I always find it amazing that many smart people can overlook something so obvious, in this case, knowing your market.
I also find it sad that in the case of some of the student’s comments, it appears their only purpose of going into business is for the big dollars.
Now do not get my wrong, I hope that my small company will develop someday into a multimillion-dollar company, however it is my goal that no matter how big it becomes, that I will always remember that it was my customers that made me a successes, and it is up to me and those individuals that I have chosen to represent my organization, to never forget this.

I agree completly with Michael, and also stand with the thoughts of Larry Gessner.

Mastermind creates days,
always something new,
Slave lives on a playback,
always something same.

I think the more time you spend putting a business together .The harder it is to take apart , but this is not necessarily true. It depends on what your business is , somethings are just the way we live. So services will or should always be here... Beloved...

Those two are not marketing problems but personality problems. Drucker's stated that the two basic functions of managing a business are marketing and innovation. The two marketing mistakes decribed in the article are not under the marketing topic but rather on the personality arena. Marketing mistakes could be related with wrong prices setting, wrong positioning, wrong customer relationships managers among others variables related with marketing.

I agree with this article 101%!
How are your customers going to know about your product if you don't let them know about it?First before you make your product, know the market that you are targeting, then market your product and this is what is known as MARKETING.Business is not about money, business means that your product sells by marketing then making money comes next.So no matter how great your product is compared to what your competitors are offering, without marketing your product don't expect miracles,to me YOU ARE FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then ask am i LAZY??or are customers CRAZY about my product

Hello Michael,

Your points are accurate. Based upon my experience, an overwhelming majority of bosses and employees think that some of their colleagues consistently under perform. I believe all of us have worked closely with someone who they thought was lazy and not up to the job.

As an entrepreneur of a Florida based vacation and travel business, planning, dedication, and delivery are critical. However, all are equally weighted with plain old hard work.

Thanks for the motivation.
