Americans and Work

Here’s one of the silliest ideas I’ve heard in a long time.

A guy in Atlanta is spearheading a movement called “Friends of the Five-Day Weekend.” He wants to shorten the nation’s workweek to two days, saying Americans already work way too hard.

This man argues that Americans already have one of the shortest vacation times in the world and they give up nearly 570 million days of unused vacation a year. But I’d like to point out that the reason they don’t take their vacation days is because they have a lot of work to do. Shortening the work week obviously isn’t going to make that work get done.

This idea is ridiculous. What would it do to businesses and to the overall American economy if we just shut down our offices three days a week?

I rarely take vacations because I don't think you can create wealth by taking days off. You’ve got to put in the time to reap the rewards.

As hardworker people, I never regret that I lost my vacation time. I believe vacation can be arrange after we see the result from our work hard. I am more satisfy to see the result of my job then take vacation, rather than take vacation and later of the result from work. I also agree with people's comment vacation is the way to reduce of our physic overwhelmed. But not always through vacation. Someone can be successful, it is because of his/her hard work, we can see with Mr.Trump. He is a focus man to his successful and he got it. We can learn from Mr.Trump!

We love to work. The old saying is: "Love what you do." The problem is that we do get over-worked. The problem is the economy in America really pushes for more work just to make ends meet. IE: part time job

America needs more inspiration and to enjoy life. Shorten the work week :
NO. But give some enjoyment. Keep the paid holidays fair for the workers of America. Love what you do, and you will never think of it as a job.

I'm a Zimbabwean working in Sout Africa. I have seen and experienced how an economy can grow and the benefits to the people and trust a healthy economy is a treasure to be guarded jealously. The Us economy is much bigger and healthier than SA and the last thing you would want is to come against that in any way.

I totally agree with you Donald, all good things need hard work to be built and maintaned. Redusing the number of work days in a week will only distabilise things.

The idea of shortening the workweek to 2 days is ridiculous. Here in Canada we have a perfect example of what happens to an economy when the people work just a little less than the national average. In Quebec, the average work week is 37.5 hours, while in Ontario the average is a 40 hour work week. Now compare the two provinces economies and there is a startling difference. Now true, the amount of time spent at work is only one of many factors, but can be seen as an indicator of other problems as well. Even the former Premier of Quebec was calling for Quebecors to start working more (and harder).

Mr. Trump,
love what you do, true diligence and the right balance between vacation days as compensating with quality time spared in family or for oneself.
Mr. Trump, look even to implement a development project are aspects which may influence the succes of the plan as also the balance of hours invested in work and personal life for the team involved in:the developers team as the community we touch generally spoken...
That idea came to me when seeking in the blogs a address of Labour schedules, nice presented, and the small part I*ve seen in U.S. as talking with friends there, well, manny are working full time and after extra jobs, to declare the incomes and pay the taxes, in some north European country*s, as much you work the more you pay to the state, well, avoiding to touch subjects i did*t know in depth, let*s take a look at superficial one: a community a large city with growth potential and relatief stable economy looking at per capita income... industry % the demographics the geographical positioning the taxes flexibility and each one do what know to do at best and love to do it, but generally spoken people are exhausted and yes have no time to spend in vacations as long they need to work extra hours, EU 35 hours, U.S. 40 China 50 hours/week. huge unemployment rate, resources and prices going high difficult to maintain the right balance, I*ve choosed the profession as Civil eng. thinking that as long people are living on the Earth to build homes is a sure and lovely profession to dedicate a life time. Well as long as each community has reached a level of development or is struggling to balance it in the growth demographic speed or inmigration aspects as in family, a cell with a income and rising childrens planning...ownership vs rent , work extra extra hours without vacations and go into exhaustion and the monthly rates at bank for a house and a car or two, food schools and surprize that in one moment the lists of foreclosured are higher, and that going in the market as bargains even in gov sites...even cars need to be checked the band of transmission and changed after 3 years? and oil checking and the fuel quality determine the health of the motor, the maintenance but with people is more sensitief.. what do you think if soo many daily costs people are not able to pay cash and use credit cards? monthly rates..that too many work hours unbalance the education of the childrens, that good schools imply extra costs you know, generally spoken the vicious circle. Cutting the unnecessary costs the very first step, but to rebalance as long that economy fluctuation affect monthly the planning and the sustainment...who then will join turism or earlier the hospitals as burden out or cancer you know that the waiting lists in hospitals is at paroxism, someone if ill now, wait *till analyses are done and the results at least 2 months, or if delay the checking that surprise a crash! sure that are corporations ensuring to they*re employers much more conditions regarding health care or childrens care ,vacation days or bonuses..a corporation has a planning: so many employees, the services the work shedules the assesments, the human capital input output and the profit good for all and growth.Community: growth balance economy taxes..input but the output well, hidden debts in health field in school bases covering the larger the community the bigger the pbr, the differences between existing taxes or not per county*s and the huge foreclosure phenomena as industry migration in lohn system and unemployment as result ..vicious circle. ellections after 4 years and what before was a whole than cover or go in debts and quality of life will transform the large mass in working for money not seeing that money may work for them..the small daily horizont generally spoken. community work force layer % graphs but as we look at taxes supported by these peoples and the whole number of illness, prisoneers,

I agree with you 100%, Donald. I mean, that's leaving businessmen with companies where people only work for 2 days. And it's not like people are going to give up their new vacation days. Well, I would, but that's just me. By the way, I got that Trump University letter months ago. I really respect how you're not cheap with the paper...

haha I guess Americans have the best working style already... I remembered going on a study tour to US in 1999 to visit some companies' offices... I realise their working styles are reasonably relaxing while they are producing fantastic results! I am not sure if that's true but that was the impression I had when I visited those companies...

Back in Singapore, it has been our style to rush our work... Life in Singapore is really very fast and hectic.. But that's what I love to do in my own business... As for myself and my company, we work from morning 9am all the way to the night at about 10pm to 12pm... Working from Monday to Saturday... That's because (like Mr Trump said) we have work to finish and it has to be finished!

Imagine everyone of us just do our businesses for 2 days a week... I seriously think that we will be facing economical crisis... Take for example, if we take turn to work 2 days a week to finish our work, it means that the company will have to employ even more employees... And that could lesser pay to every employee... Every employee is paid for working 5 to 6 days a week... If their working days are shortened by half, so are their salaries! That will mean the middle-income families will become low income very soon! Oh man, if I were working for others, I wouldn't want to have low income for working in such a high position!

Mr. Trump,
with your permission, shortly this time:
about building the highest skyscraper in the world, well is for sure that the very best specialists you picked already on the team covering the every single aspect.
A new brand as TT Blue Diamond in the changing politics of the global market softly but sure, is functional.
But the new inventory added to the Trump name may be that pyramide water and options like.: rosen garden the most spectaculars, glass cupula patio, that each birth, wedding, conferences, inspiration when not events, hmm, the form and the details are simple and the symbolism touch the sky but building in a subtle way inside everythingl person comming here..how? I see it finnaly Rosa Line but design marketing and all and be able to create ideas new and new to go further into the unicity of Trump Corporation.
But theApocalypsa ch.21 :10-27 do you know how must be done?
perhaps the La Roca is already in place but with the corners cutted.
May I have the honor to present you smalls inventory*s with impact as new way to build as branding, starting with that octahedron form, so nice as idea as waterfalls with 7 stairs you have already?!
Mr. Trump, to work for your brand well I still wonder where it lead as creativity, please mr. Trump, that creativity with the right team to apply and refine the new concepts, exciting and challenging, what can we do for Sir?!
Thank you in advance,
Daniela

I believe that if you truly love what you do, then it would be like getting paid to have fun everyday. I usually tell people that the difference between play and work is that nobody likes to work, but everybody loves to play. Who wouldn't love to get paid to play? If you enjoy your job and fun doing it, then you are getting paid to play. In that situation, who really needs a vacation? Anybody who is familiar with Mr. Trump's work ethic could probably guess where I'm headed. Your love and passion for and dedication to the job will shine through to your customers and clients, and you and your business will become more successful. Right, Mr. Trump?

TT Blue Diamond (New Global Brand)

Piramide Water as Option Trump Development.
Why? it really have a very special effect in the water quality and health.
the greenhouses in NL using that principe for tomatos well toghether with other ingredients too, the right dosaje but the smell and the taste of that tomatoes for export for U.S. where exactly taste as I can remeber that*s the true one...and that I don*t know how wide spreadet is the Trump name i mean other products but diveristy is the rule of big corporations, so if a water pyramide for the health of our customers, why not supply with that water the own greenhouses as option to invest in
the local economy, and offer to our customers the veery special taste of quality food and if not created until some Trump receipts combinate with great taste of whines as house recomandation(at least we are what we eat, and this taste well, to have a master cook at home is a bless!, that is something which make the difference in the whole Trump chain and serve also the new interests of the developig area that we produce for ourself or if we want we produce for the whole Trump chain the close by or fresh vegetables delivery, imagine that see the picture of the products clients know that fresh we deliver it at excellence quality. to care a greenhouse is less than supply by others, sorry but we can also produce more and ..how far can we go? :) with healthy food.
A potato a one my grandmom in Sebes have had is likecutting the skin appear as tears of the spring! that*s health!
but what make the difference if we decide that development we touch in the exposed to disaster areas we may choose also residences, building green the highest standards new partners and new products which start even from ambiental aromas fresh really we did*t have enough flowers to produce natural essences? a Renuzit natural version
finnaly.
The heavy piece is the Trump Roses Gardens imagine a construction like the ancian circle theather the greeks in stairs 12 inscribed into a quadrat the high will be thissame as the L splitted in 12 is art to give natural acustics soo a pretty large one, the center, the what is needet: for conferency*s or for concerts or for weddings or for communions or for name every single event able to make unforgetable that decor where a whisper is heared till the top, top which will be a cupula as a astronomium if sommer will open above and strategically tables and rooses, 12 doors in 4 parts, and the warning: we select the acces there is spcial and need a special care entering that space, reservations..you know? why? that even for weddings we resrve a half hour in silence there to came to the core of themself living with inspiration the event like: love as build within and care it in years like a garden of soo fragile roses. why Diamond name? each one touch that place is *forced *to feel inspired like the heart touch the God in the sky and came back with bless to sustain them..a one by one subtle touch and that is the make the difference as unforgettable, we reveal when they go like: what you received here share it with joy forward with joy!! what? the roses touch!:)
each one understand as much is prepared for that magic! that the decours we change with colours and forms or scenes hmm, imagine how many possibility*s, nights in moonlight in the
Trump Roses Gardens, invited concerts for al tastes a.s.o.
More, that roses we can produce the jam the Trump one! luxury edition
small gift pack for the way back at home, they ask what it is? a sweet food for the way, so a natural bread, a small jam and a small butter package, how many expect to see the Roses Jam, believe me is delicious! as many global locations we reach people love roses, and we can produce some accesory*s as roses wood small veery small gifts with TT form, why? becouse the proportions we apply there will be the right ones in order to equilibrate to build inside..
what do you think about Mr. Trump? !I

I think this is kind of commical, I worked for a company in San Diego that had clients on the East Coast, and in Hawaii. Considering the time difference I thought it would of been more efficient if tech support would arrive 1 hour earlier in the morning in order to service the East Coast clients, Since business was slowest on Friday, I suggested that the individuals that arrived one hour earlier during the week could have a half day on Friday afternoon. This idea was not original, I have seen this in Germany, where people can arrive early to work during the week (especially on a Monday), in order to have a half-day on Friday. Although no on in tech support wanted to do this, so the idea was shot down. Americans really are set to the 9 to 5 schedule, everyone rushes out the door at the exact same time, just to end up in traffic, it makes no sense.

You know what we should really try and have some great fun before getting all serious on everyone. Because you know what once all that serious stuff kicks in it doesn't take long to wrap things up.

You know that just as well as I do.

TRUTH OR DARE?

TRUTH it is the nature of the beast. Would that be fortunate and or unfortunate. I suppose that all depends who is on the receiving end. However the fortune does not lie in the element of tender. Certainly tender, loving care. Just not the kind made from chemicals among other things.

Also, thanks! Thanks for giving me that extra boost of courage to do the things I most certainly need to do.

VACATIONS !!!?? You have got to be kidding me. My father has busted his tail since coming back from Vietnam in the late 60's. Raised 3 boys and worked 2 jobs for 40 years. He took his fair share of weekends and week vacations here and there but work was everything and he takes a lot of pride in his work to this day. 2 days a week would never cut it and my dad still calls me a lazy bum when I take weekends off.

This is definitely the silliest idea i have ever come across in my life.Working for 2 days per week? How are you going to maintain your lliving in the first place??Even if you can,you might just be able to earn enough to sustain, let alone enjoy the five days off!!
[-] Posted by Mary Rose on 05/14/2007 8:39 AM
First of all, let me congratulate you on the birth of your granddaughter. What a blessing to see the next generation of your family. Looks like she wants to be a celebrity also!!

Next- there are no creative answers to this blog. Let's put our thinking caps on!! When I was a young woman, I worked as a nurses' aide and was able to get 5 day weekends twice a month while working a normal 40 hour week! How? By working 9-10 days in a row and taking off Friday and Saturday one week, then Sunday and Monday the next- then add whatever paid holiday and vacation day that I could to round out the weekend. That way I had 2 vacations per month!!

When I had my business and a full-time job, I was able to work 2 40 hours jobs. I worked my normal job with 4 10 hour shifts so I could get Fridays off to work on-site during the regular work week- but I worked 6AM-10PM with breaks for lunch and supper getting six 5.5 hour shifts in during 2 days. This was actually quite productive.

Fireman work 40 hours shifts in 3 days the same way.

Imagine if everyone did the same. You could have 3 shifts of workers doing 40 hours per week every work week. The workers would then have 5 days to do what they wanted- take a vacation- be with family- or start your own business.

Something to think about!!

Yeah, I think that's so ridiculous that I have to change the subject to lighten up the load a bit:

Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, and Quasimodo were all talking one day.

Sleeping Beauty said, "I believe myself to be the most beautiful girl in the world."

Tom Thumb said, "I must be the smallest person in the world."

Quasimodo said, "I absolutely have to be the most disgusting person in the world."

So they all decided to go to the Guinness Book of World Records to have their claims verified.

Sleeping Beauty went in first and came out looking deliriously happy.
"It's official, I AM the most beautiful girl in the world."

Tom Thumb went next and emerged triumphant, "I am now officially the smallest person in the world."

Sometime later, Quasimodo comes out looking utterly confused & frustrated and says,

"Who the hell is Rosie O'Donnell?"

Sorry, I had to go there!

Thanks,
Ambrose

I always tell young people, when choosing a career, make sure that it is something that you love to do. If you love to do it, it is not work. And if it is not work, then you won't want time off. I think the larger problem is that we don't teach our children how to choose a career. A career is a major decision. Something that most people will be doing the rest of their life. So if you don't choose a career you like, you may end up working a lifetime of unhappiness. This is what many people do. SO choose a career wisely. If you don't like the job you’re in, then change it. It's never too late. The more flexible you can be the happier you will be. The happier you are at work, you won't be looking of time off. I couldn’t imagine a 4 or 6 week vacation. I’d be so bored.

Good Luck!

While people like Mr. Trump might enjoy their job because they are egotistical control freaks, most Americans do not enjoy being indentured servants to an incredibly corrupt and wasteful system called capitalism.

For the vast majority of human history, people were hunter-gatherers. They worked about 12-15 hours a week foraging and hunting and the rest of time spent in leisure. They lived stress-free and happy, albeit relatively short lives.

While it is now impossible to return to this system from a logistical standpoint, there are still much better options provided by technological advancements.

For one, food production is incredibly more efficient today than ever before. Less than 1% of the population feeds 99%. Also, food distribution services likely employ another 2%. Housing manufacturing is also very efficient and could be done by less than 1%, same with car manufacturing. Healthcare I will be generous and say that might employ 3%. Also, lets maintain teachers at 2%. So now we have every basic need provided for using 10% of the population. Assuming this 10% works full time, we could distribute this labor to the other 90%.

This estimate would mean people only truly need to work 4 hours a week. Ofcourse, compensated for inefficiencies and other necessities I may have forgot, lets double and round up to 10 hours a week. And for good measure lets add 60% more labor for luxery services like 'crap we don't need.' That would come to 16 hours a week, or 2 out of 7 work days a week.

Under this system, I also think technology would improve faster since scientists and inventors would have free time to create organizations for sharing and improving scientific knowledge that benefits humanity, as opposed to commercial goods.

The only thing that forces people to work more hours are corporate interests which raise prices on houses, goods, and services far beyond their true value. Our bubble-bust economy is a direct result of this and the honest working families are the ones who ALWAYS take the hit.

Mary Rose, I enjoy your perspective! If you want days off, work your schedule.

If you love what you are doing, are you really working - or just playing real hard? I am intense. I love to work, but I put equal energy into play and learning. I find that moving between activities helps keep me energized.

I don't think our lives were meant to be lived by a time clock. Everyday should be productive in one way or another. There are days when you have a lot that must be done right now. Get organized and work till you come to a resting place. The important thing is that you keep a finger on your pulse, and when you recognize fatigue, get rejuvenated. Personally, I am happiest when I am busy and challenged.

Mr. Trump, you know that guy is completely out of touch with what life is all about. America's work ethic contributes to our quality of life, and the happiest healthiest people are the ones who are busy. I don't intend to ever retire.

People who have not lost their work today can be considered as lucky. Recession has hit America since December 2007 and has already caused loss of jobs for millions of people. That’s why during this time we need to spend our money wisely. Everyone had to know that there was going to be a stimulus scam of some kind coming. It turns out there are a lot of scam websites out there, claiming they will get you extra stimulus money, and it is all bunk. They say they'll get you extra cash from the Make Work Pay Credit, or a first time homebuyer's credit, or a tax break on a new car purchase. Well, if it wasn't a phone call from your accountant, don't do it, and for the love of all things holy, do not give them any information whatsoever. The FTC, the BBB, and various state Attorneys General have issued warnings, to not participate in any offers of any sort, as they are scams, in regard to the federal stimulus. I find it very interesting that a lot of the readers on this website tend to either not have a complete grasp of the English language, or are so retarded that they never learned how to spell in elementary school. Reading the replies to Donald's post are not only embarrassing, but interesting at the same time. You think a community that reads about Donald Trump would be significantly more literate as well as intelligent.
