In the summer of 2003, I can remember when Mark Burnett came up to the office to discuss a few things with Mr. Trump. I was not a big television watcher, and I had never seen a reality show. I heard that Mark Burnett had an idea to use Mr. Trump and the Trump Organization as the premise for a new show, a business show. I didn’t think much about it because I was busy writing our first book, which eventually became How To Get Rich.
A lot of people think we wrote the book to satisfy the demands of the publicity caused by the premiere of The Apprentice in January of 2004. The fact is, we were writing it six months before, and it was convenient that the television show came along to give it the spotlight when it came out in March of 2004. I can clearly remember when Mark Burnett was waiting to see Mr. Trump, and he was standing by my desk. He said I looked busy and asked what I was doing, so I told him I was writing a book with Mr. Trump. He was very surprised, and said incredulously, “You’re writing a book with Donald? Then I have to tell you a story!”
I said okay, and to paraphrase it, back in 1987 Mr. Trump’s first book came out, which is considered to be a business classic at this point. It was called The Art of the Deal. Also in 1987, Mark Burnett was working as a nanny and selling tee shirts on Venice Beach in Southern California. He came across a copy of the book, and said to himself, “I have nothing in common with a mogul, but I’m going to read this.” So he did, and as he put it “That book changed my life. I said to myself after reading it--I am going to be someone! I am going to be a success!” And he became determined to do what he hoped to do.
I doubt if Mark Burnett thought, twenty years ago while reading The Art of the Deal on Venice Beach, that one day he’d be a business partner with Donald Trump. But here he was, waiting to have a meeting with the man who had changed his life around. Mark became a visionary in the television industry, and he pinpoints the turning point in his life to reading a book by a real estate mogul.
Likewise, the turning point for us at the Trump Organization happened to be The Apprentice. Prior to the debut of The Apprentice, the Trump Organization was known as a property management company. Sure, we had a very famous boss, but property management it was. When we heard rumor of the set up of the show being 16 applicants vying for a job at The Trump Organization, with everyone being fired until there was one left, one executive quipped “I think we should name the show The Lucky 15.” It could be pretty intense around here and the thought of cameras, a crew and everything else that went along with a show wasn’t exactly a wonderful prospect in our eyes.
We adjusted, and it became a great experience for all of us. Mark’s team became like family and every day became a new adventure. Best of all, it showed a side of Mr. Trump that people had never seen before. He’s a colorful and multi-dimensional person, in addition to being a brilliant businessman, and Mark’s concept of the show definitely showed those aspects of his persona. We were pleased when it was a hit, and we quit complaining so much about everything. In fact, when the team went back to Los Angeles, we were sorry to see them go.
Looking back, I realize that most of us thought the show might be okay, at best, but we weren’t really prepared for the hit it became. Goes to show you that a visionary can see things we can’t--and goes to show you that it’s a good idea to read Mr. Trump’s books.

You say you were busy writing our first book.
Is it not Donald is writing a book and you were assisting him?
Are you co-authors?

Devasted under corruption, Balkan war and 50 years of communist regim, there are very few business role models.
He will never knew how many people he was impacted in this part of planet (and Mr. Trump with his team),
but at the end....
...it doesn't really matter, it's only between you AND God.
And when you finaly understand this truth, there will be no 'and'.
Ultimate, superior dharma.
Mark, You are a great man.

is great the story about Mr Burnett Apprenticeship starting with reading a special book!! But talking recently wih another mom about the childrens generally they*re interests the temptations arround them to protect and the base we may or not give to them...hmm, she was affraid about the huge influence inetrnet and some many tv chanals excite the

signs like: scarcity of food, well poverty with millions of people know the hunger..that will be wars here and there - well after the *45 it appear that on the Planet just 7 weeks without war and we are in 2007! that the bad will grow between people..-well the manner the young generation talk, asked myself if they will kniow what for them represent the Bible the Jesus sacrifice and His Come Back!! with that gay parade in Jerusalem
and the damages by orthodox hebrews well, just 1Corinteni 6 : 11-20

Nice to read the memoir about the Apprentice. The Apprentice gave a new dimension in American Television and it also established The Trump organization as the history maker.
Mr. Trump was leading the show, so the audience had a lot of expectations and excitements to see the show how it progresses and it was a big big success.
Success, you can predict but can not be sure. Don't know whether Mr. Trump was sure or not about the success of the show, but it became one of the most successful TV show in American TV history.

In the beginning I watched it to learn business skills and to hear from Donald Trump seemed like every show had him giving steps on how to conduct proper business skills. I could hardly wait through commercials I loved learning Trumps business lessons ~ then it just started getting really silly.
I want the show to continue but for me the only way I will continue to watch is: it has to be a show to teach business lessons not just a reality drama of foolish events. I want more of Trump teaching us tid-bits of how to go out in the work field and do better.
I watched the show the first 2 years. The last season I could hardly remember what night and time it was on ~ plus it was REALLY reality Stupid when I found it accidentally flipping the channels.
Please take this message to the producers and ask them to do what they did in the beginning ~ TEACH us business skills not just entertainment about foolish alliances and what knots ~ a few more tiles should fall on the heads of the people that think many of us view this show to see who is sleeping in the tent (what was that about?)
I believe that all Professionals ~ if they have street smarts or several degrees would appreciate good work lessons and how to be better producers the next day because we stayed up to attend 1 hour of the Trump Apprentice school the night before ~ !
Anyway, he has been my model as far as putting your making sheer determination and getting out and making a name for yourself. The thing that keeps me going is the people that say I will never amout to anything in my life and I should do like everybody else and work. What they don't understand is success takes work and I am willing to put my money where my mouth is; hope I said that right?
Mr. Trump talk a lot about passion, while I like real estate and the challenge of developing real estate into income producing properties, my true passion in life is studying Japanese Martial Arts. Especially since my heart attack two weeks ago, I am looking at things differently now and I am looking forward to many deals in Real Estate, Financial Services and Air Filtration industry. All has to do with my new look on life. Even here, I want to say, never give up on yourself; I know I will not.
a chance to see the first episode. Although the show had had the
biggest success in the USA, here in small Bulgaria it does not enjoy
the same ultimate accolade, not only because it comes with a huge delay,
but also because of the austerities of life in a post-communist country.
Nevertheless, there are some people who love the show and I am one of them.
Every night after I watch it I write down what I have learned, something like:
Details are very important, When you try to sell something-do not become a
beggar, Think outside of the box, Think big, and so on.
I do realize that these notes will not make me an astute investor overnight
or improve my mental agility in seconds. What The Apprentice is giving to me
is this simple and clear idea: Dare to Dream!, and even if I never become as rich
and famous as Mr. Trump is, I will certainly develop a lot of my hidden talents
only because I will dare to dream.
Life is not easy even for billionaires, and there are no strict rules to follow by
on the road to success. But there is certainly a basic universal law and it goes
like this: If you don’t make an effort, you don’t get result. And for me it is better
to fall flat to my face trying to reach my goals, than to be safe and sound and
never even try to get a second bite of the cherry, even if the whole world is
making fun of me.
Anybody who agrees – watch The Apprentice – the best reality show!

I just want you to know I enjoy reading your pieces as much as I enjoyed the brief interview you did about working for Mr. Trump, on the morning news (I think it was last spring). Characters with class.
