Build Your Reputation

I’ve been building the Trump brand for several decades. But from time to time, landmarks do come along.

Several months ago my son Eric joined us. So my three eldest children are now with the Trump Organization, helping to expand our brand. Don Jr, Ivanka and Eric are all here now. They are my real Apprentices, and they’re doing a great job. They know that I’m demanding, but they are disciplined and very hard workers, so they are a good fit with the Trump Organization.

Having a quality brand is very much like having a good reputation. It’s important to consider that fact, even when you are just starting out. Remember that everything you say and do is important. Actions matter. You are, literally, your own brand whether you have a business yet or not. If you are serious about what you’re doing, taking responsibility for yourself starts now.

A learning tip I think everyone should have:

We all know the incredible Wikipedia. Great site! If you like Wikipedia and learning, you´re going to LOVE this.

Wikiversity is a Wikimedia Foundation beta project, devoted to learning materials and activities, located at www.wikiversity.org. Wikiversity’s beta phase officially began on August 15, 2006 with the English language Wikiversity. There are currently five language Wikiversities - English, French, German, Italian and Spanish - and new language Wikiversity projects in other languages are in development at the "beta" multilingual hub.

Have a good saying for that, I found on another blog:

Don’t underestimate how much people value their time. They won’t give you a minute if you haven’t got something worthwhile.

Words have power: when they’re used properly they can influence, entertain, educate or convince your audience. When they’re used badly they can irritate, confuse, insult or just plain put people off you.

Get it right and you look good. Get it wrong and you don’t.

Hi Mr. Trump:
Brand needs special care. Branding is an organic process in business as you keep on making the marks and excel on what you do. It is the belief people have to you and your product, services.

I have recently posted an article on branding. I hope it will be interesting to you all:

Thank you for writing about the importance of a personal reputation. Actions do matter. I believe not enough people understand that their everyday behavior creates a perception about them in the minds of others. This perception becomes their reputation. Since your behavior is something you choose to do and therefore in your control, you can gain a competitive edge by demonstrating personal attributes that so many other people do not.

Mr. Trump
Yes, reputation is the keyword to having your products demanded. And building your reputation takes skills, resources og time. And the easiest way to build a reputation may be, when starting out.

I read an interesting blog this morning by Seth Godin
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/07/expectations.html

He wrote about reducing expactations so it would be easier to amaze. And amazing is kind of building a reputation. If you amaze in a good way you build a good reputation.

A man's company has a reputation, but the quality of it varies. As the company grows the resources seems less. Therefore, building an even better reputation as a big company is the tough task, and that is the art of making business.
But to build the good reputation you need to reduce the expactations, because then you are about to amaze.

Reading Seth Godin's blog and then this one, made a synthesis in my mind. I just wanted to share.

Thank you.

The product that will propel me to multi-millionaire status will be the brand name of my reputation.

I'm tired, a bit fatigued after work (8:51 PM) and that is all the time I have to rearrange the words of that first sentence to convey what I want to say. It still sounds a bit clunky, but that's it.

Donald Trump = good people.

Many make the mistake of thinking success will come by simply hanging out a business sign. They fail to realize the importance of reputation. Mr. Trump's comments, regarding the building of a reputation are "bang on"! I'm learning this personally. For many years, as a hobby, I wrote under a Pen Name, as many writers do. A year ago, I started to write under my real name, and have found the exercise most interesting. I'm starting all over again, as an unknown writer using my real name, building a reputation as a writer. A reputation should be nurtured, and never assumed.

Sir, you hit the nail right on the head. Your word is your bond, your actions speak louder than words, and it is not who you know but what you know. Congratulations to the Trump family, I wish you all nothing but more success to come!

Good afternoon Mr. Trump,

Every people I meet say the same: you are very responsible; you are a person who anyone can trust on… Even at first glance! Well, it is a great responsibility for me to support it.

I think we all were born with particular qualities that build our brand… besides we have the freedom to make up our mind about what we want to project to everybody else.

But above all it is important to be honest because a brand which has been built with lies sooner or later will be discovered and in just one second you can erase everything good that people used to know about you … forever!

To count on your family in your business is a great blessing! Congratulations!

Mr. Trump,

YOUR REPUTATION IS YOUR BRAND

This is something that continue to drill into us and it can't be said enough. Your reputation is the "walk the talk" of who you are and what you do.

I try everyday to deliver on everything that I have in my power to do. If something goes sideways that is NOT in my power but still under my supervision...I take full charge of the situation and do everything in my power to get things back on track.

Your actions say so much about who you are and I've found that the longer I am in business, the more important my past relationships and business experiences contribute to my success going forward.

I guess your PAST really does catch up with you.

I think this is a great post and there's been some very interesting comments made.

This got me thinking about all the employees who still don't consider themselves a "brand" and don't protect their reputation. While it shouldn't amaze me, I can't understand why some people burn bridges.

They decide to leave their place of employment for another opportunity, but never think of the long-term damage done when they don't give a proper 2 week notice. Or perhaps they try to steal clients of their old employer. Everyone knows stories like that.

The marketplace is changing dramatically. The days of being employed at the same company for a lifetime are rare, not common place.

Those who don't protect their reputation will ultimately pay the price - even if they don't know it yet.

Hello Mr. Trump

I been branding my name with a lot of talk, and its time to back it up. What suggestion do you have when my reputation is known to be all talk and no action. Though I do know that I need to take action, taking that first step is so hard. Any suggestion on how to overcome these fears?

This is a great entry with some really good responses. Your brand is built on your reputation. Your reputation is built on your character. Your character is formed by your ethics, Your ethics come from your values and your values are your foundation.

I think your children are your greatest accomplishment.

As a child, I absolutely loved the book Little Britches. In it, there is an episode, where the boy decided to take the horses to do a mans work. His father was gone for the day, and he lied to his mother, took the horses, and things went seriously wrong. When his father came home, he expressed disappointment. Then, he explained how a person's character and reputation is like a house. It takes a long time to build it, but it only takes a few minutes to tear it down. It takes much longer to put all the boards back in place.

I loved this illustration. Your honor, and honesty are the foundation. If you damage them, you have to live with the draft until you repair the damage. Mr. Trump, you are a builder, and building other people will build your reputation as well. I'm glad you recognize good ideas when you hear them.
