How to Restore Your Career after a Major Setback

Blog Image

The more risks you take in your career, the greater the likelihood that you will suffer a setback someday.

Maybe you will be accused of incompetence after one of your  high-stakes projects fails. Or perhaps your accounting firm will be implicated in some kind of malfeasance and your company’s good name will get smeared in the press.

If you suffer a devastating setback, you can’t sit back and wait for the problem to go away. Here’s a five-part strategy to recover quickly and get back on the road to success:

  1. Fight, not flight. Face up to the reality of the situation. Distinguish battles that must be fought to restore your reputation from battles that merely drain energy and purpose in escalating rounds of retaliation or revenge.

  2. Recruit others into battle. Take responsibility for innocent close colleagues who suffer collateral damage with you. Effectively leverage distant support networks to reaffirm your credibility through the voices of others.

  3. Rebuild heroic stature. Explain the true nature of the adversity. Provide a rational explanation of the context behind any injustice or provide authentic contrition over any missteps you made.

  4. Prove your heroic mettle. Regain trust by demonstrating that the setback has not destroyed your professional expertise and character strength.

  5. Discover a new heroic mission. Don't merely define yourself by your past success or failure. Rather, define a new leadership vision and a new path for personal meaning in your work and you may transcend past triumphs to reach new heights of success.

Remember, nearly every successful person, from Thomas Edison to Martha Stewart, has fought through serious career setbacks to succeed. The steps I outline above will help you rebuild your reputation and chart a brilliant new future.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is founder of Yale University’s Chief Executive Leadership Institute. He is author of six leadership books, including the new book Firing Back: How Great Leaders Rebound after Career Disasters (Harvard Business School Press).

Though it´s a tough subject, it is very important. Especially youth, which I´m a part of, being only 21 y.o., are good at forgetting the importance of preparing. Alle we think about is all the succes-stories we´ve read and our education.

We all think we´re the ones, the new Edison´s, Gates, Trumps. But even Trump have had his battles (a good place to recommend: "The Art of the Comeback")..

This is one of the reasons I´m grateful of this site and especially this blog. I love having a place I can go to and read intellectuel, relevant articles, designed to help me.

Thank you so much!

Hi Jeffrey:
Thank you for posting very good suggestions. Those suggestions are really inspiring to those who have been seriously setback and also to those who thrive to be an entrepreneur.

I have been working with entrepreneurs helping them to excel and lead their life and I would like to few more suggestions to those who want to really restore after a setback:

1. Never lose your confidence. You should believe you can restore. Many people can not restore because they don't believe in themselves.

2. Get inspirations from the industry leaders. Understand they have failed many times but they also know how to restore themselves.

3. Be honest with you and admit you know what you really want. If you know exactly what you want, then prepare the action plan to achieve that goal. Never forget your written goal and strive consistently for that.

4. If you work hard with persistence, learning by past mistakes and you specialize, then you really can do something really worth.

5. To restore again from setbacks and to make your goal fulfilled, you need commitment , passion, confidence, optimism and persistence.

So start right now. If you wait, you will leave your goal far behind.

Mr. Sonnenfeld,

searching hard the right vision to follow on a new path of life and work,
well, doing thissame thing and expectin different results, I*ve tould to myself :is time to change in order to obtain better results, and the right foundation I*ve found and it helps as long my son see some results :)

well, about what I love to do Jerusalem, also the proper foundation as start to make a difference in work and life in a middle East with high country*s risk level..I discovered the David and Goliath story presented in 3 major religious cultures...

*The account of David and Goliath is given in the Hebrew Bible in the Christian Old Testament and in the Qur*an.
The battle in the 11th century BC with David, the young Israelite boy who had already been chosen by God and anointed by Samuel to become the King of Israel. He hailed from Gath, one of five ancient city states in Philistia*

looking in the very long history of Jerusalem from Moses to the battles
of David ofr theTemplars of about Schisma East West to the Marco Polo,
well, the words or God remain thissame simple, even proverbs say that the prosperity of a country is ensured if avoid bribes but last G8 raport point thissame aspect, to help the poor country*s even Humanity helps are attacked Ms Margaret Hassan know better from Bell foundations, and the country*s reports of corruption are with progress or setbacks but as long they respond in reports, as Bible said, no person on the Earth is clean, just God in His Mercy give us as Gift his loved Son to correct our hearts with his words fill in..
From one mistake pay many generations until Jesus which washed the sinn with hios sacrifice, well, if that*s the path to the happyness, sagety, victory and prosperity the true ones, as the meeting tent details are fine art and knowledge, as Iov example as David as Solomon, if each of us , make the change from Within, having in mind the serving service Jesus does for Humanity as path of life, is possible that the world will be safe one, a prosper full of joy making the difference, Proverbs give a lot of short guidance on many aspects life present to us...is the only common language able to help the Humanity Summit to live with passion his dreams however they are(if the proper Foundation is in place).
Is work enough to do, may we do the Marco Polo route or the Fra Mauro
more than them!! as summit reach that routes with results of our work having God word as Foundation?! from Jerusalem to India to China to Russia to the US to Canada to Mexico a Declaration of Independence to live the Freedom of living and create a better world from individual to community contagious spreading forward..

The Apostles has different professions, from lawer, tax, doctor, fishers
as the people who declare the Independence in US on 4-th July , lawers, farmers, but asking for God guidance and blessings they start
the great change or they*re dreams of freedom, the real one, the promised to succeed as we obey, as David faight is a example between much more, the blood is forbidden by the Jesus sacrifice, remain the effort to know and learn the God words from the Bible and apply it day by day expecting than diferent results too in life in work in familly aspects.

But as Jesus say, the poor people we will allways have, and to care them is searching God light in life...if no matter the county the politics or religions which at least are different paths, we join the commitment to change ourself and than the world as good as we can may we start Jerusalem in order to care the only one wish God has, His Saint Mount, clean not by blood, by hearts proper mirror on his words as guidance and we find the solutions, the silky change...soo wonderfull, use what we have as knowledge commitment to serve, last 400 years where enough destructions in Middle East and suffer, what if as Summit we do it different that 2007?

So Christina Onassis and Anna Nicole Smith lacked what?

I find reading the different commentators at The Trump Blog to be too superficial, and the constant generalities of advice are appropriate for the guidance and what one would wish to instill within children of character. Except one wouldn't talk to children and expect them to understand how to restore your career after a Major Setback, you would show them by example.

I don't yet know what I am going to do with my time at trumpuniversity.com, though I will always have Ivanka on Yahoo! alert. : - }

Hi Mr Sonnenfeld
The topic of this article took me by surprise, and I was pleased to see at the Trump site something relevant and helpful. (I've just joined the site.) I have taken notes, as I went through a character assasination over the past year but stuck with my position as I was in the middle of an important deal / process outside of this job. But it was so uncharacteristic of me. Others want me to say something about the corrupt leader at the root of it, but I'm not sure. Everything is so complex. I will use your guidelines to explore the professional perspective. It has been so painful. I guess I'm not alone, even top leaders go through career disasters. Thanks

Thank you so much for the postitive reinforcement. I am a Realtor in Lexington, KY currently going through a rough time with some investor clients, and it seems like this deal is never going to go through (but it's neither my fault or their fault...we have had to work with horrid lenders until yesterday). But it looks like it is finally going to happen. Yay!!!

I haven't had a check since March and it is Mid-July, and I am constantly being harped on by family and my roommates to "suck it up, count my losses, and return home where I can get a 'real job' and succeed." Well, I'm not going to do it because yes, I am stubborn, and I know that I'm doing what I am meant to do in life.

I can't count how many times other people's negativity and naysaying has been fuel for my inspiration. I take all the negativity hurled at me and prove people wrong with my diligence and hard work. I know that my clients thank me for it, and have praised me consistently for the patience and time I have spent working to make them money.

I always say if you feel without a doubt deep in your heart (like I do) that you are meant to work in real estate for the rest of your life, you should follow your heart and do whatever it takes to be successful in your field. Do not let others' jealousy, hate, naysaying, and negativity get to you. The stress is not worth it and you will beqin to question your own integrity. Keep your head held high!!!
