As President of Trump University, I meet often with our Chairman, Donald J. Trump. I never forget that just about every businessperson in the world would envy that opportunity. Who wouldn’t want to sit down with Donald J. Trump to get his expert advice on building an enterprise?
This morning, I’d like to share some of the insights I have gained in those meetings. I’ll call them the Seven Critical Traits of Entrepreneurs, because they are business-building themes that Mr. Trump stresses often and energetically.
1. Have passion - Mr. Trump has never said to me, “Be passionate!” Yet it’s at the core or his thinking. Exactly what is passion? He summarizes it as, “Enthusiasm on a big scale.”
2. Be tenacious - Mr. Trump is not someone who lets me, or anyone in his organization, give up on any project until every possibility of success has been explored. Consider the fact that he bought the land for Trump Place in Manhattan way back in 1974 - and it is now nearing completion. That’s tenacity.
3. Think big - We all have to start with small steps on any project, but Mr. Trump urges people to take the biggest steps they are capable of. “Thinking big can get you to the top,” he once said, “and I can tell you, it’s not lonely up here!”
4. Be a sponge for new information and ideas - There’s really no such thing as knowing too much about what you’re doing. Despite his packed schedule, Mr. Trump reads everything he can and strives to get information he can use from everyone he meets. There’s often a book on his desk, and I find that inspiring.
5. Take action - When you know what you need to know about a project or idea, move decisively. Yet Mr. Trump also has a flexible philosophy and he’s willing to take a step back and start again - tenaciously - if the time is not right to move forward. So it is a matter of taking risks, but considered risks. Mr. Trump once said, “A lot of people are afraid to fail, so they don’t try. They talk, but they don’t do. That’s the perfect formula for failure.”
6. Learn to negotiate - “Learning to negotiate is invaluable if you hope to connect in any way with other people.”
7. Enjoy competition - Your competitors are there to help you perform better in the world and - certainly - achieve more success than they have. “Competition forces me to outdo myself,” Mr. Trump has said. “I love competition because, ultimately, it makes me bigger.”
To those of you who are in the United States, I wish you a happy Fourth of July holiday. America is great place to launch a great business. And to our foreign readers, all good wishes for every success. I believe the seven traits I outline above can offer you a blueprint for winning.

I´m a kid (21 y.o.) from Denmark, Europe, and I'm about to launch my very first business, and it´s very exciting.
The first book I read on my own was (actually: John Sculley Odyssey;) But the second book was) "The Art of the Deal". The book helped me so much. What can I say, everyone in this forum has read the book. You all know it´s a classic.
Thank you so much for this blog and website. I read it every day and it´s very helpful.
Thank you,

7 Critical Traits to complete the Top Entrepreneurs profile require
the 8-th trait as cherish one..
is about Welcome to the Round Masa as Team than locations cells the strategy one by one to decide for..any big country isolated is nothing so the play is open is commitment is global.
To connect the most valueable reports as WCB(impressive the large spectrum they touch as investments)with the old planes as railway*s as necessity, (the pollution and transport in once is higher than the roads and permitt connect at reasonable price the interests of people, goods, tourism, mobility) but the Summit as strategy from different levels harmonized in once will permitt Investments in place with long term continuity if the Foundation is in place!
Green Clusters passion and tenacity are in place,
even a mountain may move for the right fight, but is better when people connect before the mountains does, isn*t?
Success forward,
Daniela
Well said. You nailed all the Seven Critical Traits. ;-)

I would have to say that the #1 trait shared by all successful entrepreneurs is confidence. Closely behind would be your #2 (tenacity which relates with passion) and thirdly would be a highly risk tolerance. Anyone can have a business and claim they are an entrepreneur...look at how many young professionals are handed companies their parents had, and had nothing to do with the actual hard work involved in the company. Are they entrepreneurs?
A true entrepreneur is someone that is NOT AFRAID OF FAILURE. Someone that is willing to risk everything because they are confident in themselves, their abilities, and are willing to go the extra mile to make sure it happens. Real entrepreneurs are not afraid to hear the negative things. The largely successful business owners that I have learned much from since starting my own business have taught me one thing that I try to run my business on, and that is to use anything negative as positive drive. Basically don't make your business successful to prove people wrong (do it for you) but hey, if you prove all those people wrong at the same time...what a benefit. Entrepreneurs don't go home at 5:00, they don't ask how much vacation they are going to have, they never leave the office without making those 5 extra calls. They are driven and unapologetic to their ways.
Why I say confidence is #1 is because if you are affected every time something goes wrong, you are not meant to be an entrepreneur. Things go wrong, deals are lost, things pop up that can change the business completely in 5 minutes. If you don't have confidence, you will run and hide when adversity hits. If you don't have this trait, then nothing else matters. You can be the best negotiator, but if the first time you lose a deal you give up, what does being the best negotiator matter? Truly confident people and entrepreneurs don't get too high or too low. Also, you cannot be intimidated....ever. You cannot care if it is the secretary, or the CEO. Treat them the same. Good C level individuals can tell someone kissing their butt from a mile away. They may like you...but do they trust you?? How do you get their business without trust?
I believe true entrepreneurs do the things the non-entrepreneur minded individual is "above doing". Yes, I own my own business, I'm also the salesman, the copy machine fixer, the paper filer, the coffee maker....get my drift? That is passion.
If you are passionate, confident, not afraid of failure, success follows.

I am from Argentina and I have talked to you by phone one time regarding to the possibility of having a web academy just to have the opportunity to participate in the academy. Anyway, I feel very confortable reading the blog and it gives me good ideas about being an entrepreneur in the Interior Designer life. It was very useful for me to read your comments and I really thank you for that.
In having respect for the knowledge of Mr. Trump, I also deem it necessary to acknowledge the fact that he is a product of his teachers, just as I, and that the Plato, Emerson, Hahn, Hill, Carnegie, Covey, Tzu and many other great leaders of each generation should be recognized, for it is all the little parts of them that make a new whole and pertain to the spirit of the Entrepreneur.
The student has become the teacher and so it goes. I want to thank Mr Trump for all I have learned from him and to be on the look out for me, as I have made up in my mind, that I will make it, at all costs and with all the wisdom I may find in my journey. to all the readers, I encourage you to the position of knowledge and then the proper application of it, for knowledge without application is still ignorance, so don't just read the blogs, implement them in your own approach and try try again.

As you stated, these are just some of the insights gained from your meetings with Mr Trump.
I would like to add the following to the list which I believe are equally vital.
1 Focus
2 Integrity
3 Advice (or New Information as you put it) but with the caveat that after all due consultations, the final decision rests with the entrepreneur who should be prepared to assume responsibility for the outcome whether good or bad.
4 Right Pace: The ability to work at ones own pace disregarding presure for quick results- Better to crawl in the right direction than to run in the wrong direction.
Looking forward to more from you

thank you for sharing the 7 traits - they are succinct and basically epitomizes what the human spirit was designed for.
I'm glad that Passion was highlighted as the No. 1 point and echoed your view - to me it is the fire in our belly that fans the flame of our effort and work towards success.
I embarked on this entrepreneurial journey seven years ago and never once did I regret giving up that "Employee Mindset"....though I must say that I've never dreamt of being my own boss when I was young. Still there's much to learn and absorb----yes like a sponge. Therein, I will certainly enrol for the entrepreneurial course in Trump Uni after I have successfully completed the Mastery in Marketing.....I'm almost near completion of this course and enjoyed every minute of it.
You can view my website www.edwardwhistler.com on more details of what I do for fun. Also, I'm embarking on a new business venture www.dermanano.com and I'm sure this new course will certainly be beneficial for me.
Kudos to Trump Uni

I think all of the budding entrepreneurs will certainly appreciate your advice.
This is an excellent way to say "HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY". My husband also believes very much on the above traits. Alongwith the above he also believes in Hardwork and Honesty. Secondly, you are absolutely right in saying the PERSEVERANCE pays... Patience is very much an important trait to an excellent business person.
Thank you for sharing your learnings..

Hi my name is Barb. I am writing this memo to add on to your listing for entrepeneurship..
8. Optimism most people have passion and they talk a good game, vis a vis when the routine is no longer exercise a new implementation has to be administered some freeze. Most of our best leaders: Mahatma Ghandhi, Martin Luther King, Roy Kroc, and Donald Trump, Mary Kay. They all shared optimism while working on his or her goals to better communities with the leadership skills in entrepeneurship.
9. Mission Statement I believe each leader has a philosphy which has a twist to past philosophers. For instance, Renee Descartes: "I think therefore I am". "Cogito ergo sum".
I hope I am on the right track in my understanding?
I always enjoy to read the blog, not only because there's a smartest Entrepreneur, Mr. Trump, but also there are more successful lecturers offerring their pointwiews, and you're the best one of them. Appreciate for sharing your quick traits with us, very powerful conclusions, easily understood.
But only one point making me have to think twice, "America is great place to launch a great business." Well,...Since the world's been becoming FLAT, the internet breaks distance, races, nations ..etcs, Guess there would be more chances coming out worldwide. Manybe, we should change our focus, while we thinking BIG....Cheers!
Have a fun filled Holiday!

Thanks for this article. I subscribed to the Tump news letter a couple of months ago jokinly but now I have seriuosly started reading them and I'm finding very much it interesting. I'm a South African who is about to finish his college and have realised how many of our people live in poverty here in SA, how the goverment is struggling to deal with this issue of poverty, unemployement and crime.
I have realised that in order for us to overcome these problem we South African's must take our own destiny into our hands and seriously begin to embrace ENTREPRENEURSHIP and start building companies and industries. Education that is formal education alone will not solve our problems but financial education will. In our country we have alot of people who are educated but are financially illiterate. These are the people who are spending their hard earned money on useless things which they do not need busy acquiring bad debt instead of trying to fin a way to change the world around them. When the compant that they work for suddenly decides that they are not worth the tropuble anymore most of them commit suicide leaving theirt families with massive debt.
These traits that you have given to us to read I feel that they are very important for anyone who is seriuos about becoming an ENTREPRENEUR must practice these 7 traits everyday and if need be he/she must add their own to them.
Looking forward to reading your next article.
Thanks Very Much

I strongly believe on this Seven Traits to achieve success, when I read Trump's books, these are some of the messages that I get at the end of the reading. The one I like the most, is THINK BIG, because for me that's the base of a bad idea, a good idea or a great idea, depending the degree in which you think.
As thinking big is a base of an idea, these 7 traits are the base to become a successful entrepreneur. Because not surprisingly Donald Trump always incite us to think like that, and there is no one better to listen than the ones that already are on the top, especially a person as Trump, who likes teaching.
Thank you Sexton, I find your articles very interesting.
Nice 4th of July!

impressed me your letter from pretoria South Africa,
as you say to take the destiny in the nation hands and start again, hmm,
well the pictures I*ve seen about South Africa, impressive as the guns in arms to protect .. or the water scarcity outside big city*s, less than 4l/person a day? what is lovely the south african proverb like: *Man take the door open becouse you never know when a angel will come in** remember taht words of a teacher Paul Slater from there which tould us that between sustain attracting funds for water aduction from far far away..
Just want to say : take good care about the start and about foundation people there will build with soo many traps that society generally spoken present and of we did*t inform properly that we make errs...
To start properly from people, from education but the Foundation must be God. No idea what religions are there but the Bible is ONE and the word of God is the only trustfully one.would people there follow the:
VICARIUS FILLI DEI or other organizations talking in the name of God ? how make the difference between good or bad, what to follow? is important the choice! For example Exodus 20:11 or Ezechiel 20:12 say :* I*ve gived them my Sabbath*s as a sign between me and them to know that I*m the Lord making them Saint...so what about the Sundays free, are in Bible references about? or about the Saint Alliance'? look, that God gived name to everysingle thing on the Earth, but the Name of God we know?
JEHOVA say to you something? old old churches have it wrotten, but the Roman*s distroyment campaign chjange many things, even in Bible to mention is selected, from the thousands of times wrotten in old edition in the relatief news, remain about 60times?
Start ENTREPRENEURSHIP mean educating the consumer, well than the producers may be educated too in the spirit of God to produce healthy products so serving the customers at excellence.
* To whom know the thirst I will give them water for free from the life spring* -Apocalipsa 21:6b
Or the Revelation 21:5,6a, theGod as the Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end,
The Nations will come to your Light and the kings to your shine Isaia 60:3
But Isaia 2:4 is the most important , is about the Jesus the King of Army*s and the final peace between Nations in the God spirit...
hope it helps
Best best wishes and health,
Daniela
Thank you and happy 4th to you as well. I do indeed envy your position with Mr. Trump, however, I am also grateful that you are willing to share the wealth of information you have gleaned. Along with Meredith McIver, the "insider insights" which you both share are extremely helpful in gaining a complete perspective of Mr. Trump's entrepreneurial spirit.
Our great country was founded on the seven principles of which you spoke. Many people will never realize George Washington was one of the greatest entrepreneurs who ever lived. Why? Because our educational system teaches the most mundane factoids from textbooks that are more archaic than 8 track tapes.
Is it any wonder why so many students exit their educational establishments without the "emotional capital" which Rajesh highlights in his excellent blog. Few people will ever have the opportunity to understand that real meaing begins with knowing the "whole truth" not just some publisher's opinion to perpetuate some administrations agenda.
On this 4th of July I applaude you and Trump University for its part in educating the "whole person" not by giving them more propoganda, but by simply giving them the "whole truth."
In the spirit of freedom,
Gladys Deniz
Excelent blog outlining the7 critical traits of top entrepreneurs. However I bedlieve there is an equally important trait that was left out.
VISION. Without a clearly defined vision, any entrepreneur is bound to lose focus. THis is where productivity turns into activity and businesses often fail.
If you entry peculiary players table, where you can not leave or refuse without permission, you have to win (hoever, if you will crash all opponents you can expect robbers at the exit door-that optimistic variant). Well, there is one way to create more flexible position for you at the table, to win or to leave hoever is your intention: Invite more valuable players and create good balanced table. Without that move you can imagine consequencies.
Rules of football: You know duties of frontliner: "Push back opponents to win field, create position for top scorer who is running in the background...
If you know that you have the best team of couches you do not need to worry to much, just play and win.
By the way, your couch is far away, you are alone and you have to decide in seconds...
I think everyone frontline player know exact how its smell before he entry first game and he know how is the risk.
Otherwise, I've never meet couch who want loose frontliner...
All best for couches
Peter
You are always bringing the tasty morsels of knowledge for this lightening fast and heavy mental bake-off, right Michael 6-ton, right. As usual I won’t tread on the Presidents bountiful display of helpful knowledge sponge cake, maybe just add some frosting. Here’s 2 bits to decorate the 6-tons’ knowledge.
1. Passion- As far as the scene is concerned- with it you’ll explode, without it you’ll implode, savvy. We’ll coax the maestro into saying the word "passion" in his orchestration of projects, some day. Michael, I am happy your yin/yang energy is in apparent balance, smooth work. :-)
2. Tenacity- Picture a pit bull, rottweiler, or mastiff, clamped to the tasks’ throat until the project is completed. Well, does working every Sunday count? I wonder Mr. D.J., if you are working today, like me, I’d say yep. Do you know the feeling of a total day off? But then who needs a full day off when you love your work, besides maybe, the rest of the family? :-)
3. Think BIG-
A) Picture the outcome in your mind’s eye.
B) Know the universally agreeable reason for this happy ending/new beginning.
C) Meditate and use Positive affirmations daily
D) Do Qi Gong (my favorite), Tai Chi; anything that connects you to the universe.
E) Do a Karma check, dot your I’s and cross your T’s; be accountable to yourself, as the rest of the world reflects your inner being. :-)
4. Be a sponge- My suggestion is to delve into anything you enjoy, as your niche just might be what you love, as it should be. You won’t know until you step out of the uncomforting zone of conformity. :-)
5. Take action- Well, some people need to talk to get up the motivation, or I suggest meditate. And when it comes to others going green, they are taking take their own advice, right now as a matter of fact, way to go! You know I love you! Smile real big; I knew you could! :-)
6. Learn to negotiate - "Learning to negotiate is invaluable if you hope to connect in any way with other people."
I was a breach baby, so let’s try this way kimosabe. "Learning to connect with yourself the universe, and with other people is invaluable if you hope to negotiate in any way." :-)
7. Enjoy competition - What competition? The only competition we ever have is ourselves.
The Toa Te Ching brings to mind being the smallest no matter how big you get. We all know water runs downhill and going inside for the answers brings about changes of universal proportions. My checker is sitting on your back row, my man. :-)
Hope everyone had a great 777. May your existence be one of peace and tranquility.
Sincerely,
~Chad M. K. Ludwig~
Thanks for sharing. When I was a child, I used to think that USA was a place to start from zero and build an empire. Today, I still do. And Mr. Trump has proved it many a time!
The secret of any success starts with a dream. A dream to know who you are and for what purposes you are here for. It's your true vision, no one can take from you. There is a difference between those who succeed in their life from those who don't.
The winners invest time and resources to know who is their creator and understand his purposes for their life. And when they seize this vision, they will keep focus until it's accomplished and fulfilled in Its time.
The loosers spend time and resources on many projects without getting that vision of their Creator and His purposes for their life.
We are just a living instrument, a workmanship, and until we find the notice of the purposes of our life, we still have a long way to get to the top. Just like Mr. Trump or all the great men in history, you got to start from zero by knowing your Creator and His purposes for your life. Then you can start building the empire He planned for you long before you were born.
How do you follow the path for a dream comes true? Simply use RKD formular:
- R-Remember, where were you coming from?
- K-Know, where are you standing today?
- D-Discover, where will you go tomorrow?
The American Dream is still alive, just as it was yesterday, it is today and will be tomorrow.
Be blessed,
O2
I truly believe in the seven steps you have listed. I believe that persistence and taking action are huge. After all if you just continue learning and not taking action on what you have learned then you will never accomplish anything. Persistence and motivation are what keep me moving towards my goal. And of the course the fact that I do know what I want to achieve. How many people can say they honestly know what they want from life?
