Here's a story I'd like you to think about today.
It started on the day John bought a new laptop for Jeanne, for his 82-year-old mother. John set up the machine and showed her how to send e-mails to her grandchildren.
A week later, they were all cursing the computer. Jeanne had gotten a fake phishing email from a scammer who was posing as her bank. She followed the instructions in the email and gave away all her account information, including a credit card number. Fortunately, the computers at her bank sent up a red flag as soon as the crooks tried to use her credit card to buy a computer and a large-screen TV online. There was no financial damage, but Jeanne was one very upset woman.
By the way, I am not making this story up. John is a close friend of our Executive Editor.
So remember, scammers are still at it. They haven’t gone away. A small percentage of their phishing emails work - usually on people like Jeanne who haven’t spent enough time on the Internet to recognize a crooked email.
So be sure to brief your elders, your young kids and all other Internet newcomers that solicitations that seem too good to be true - like winning the Welsh Lottery or being named the sole heir of a tribal chieftain - are just attempts at fraud.

Dennis Waitley once said "It take just as much energy to lead a bad life as it does a good life." Can you just imagine how much good could be done if all the hackers, and phishers spent their time and their technological expertise to help others instead of hurt them?
