Internet Addiction in China

While many experts in the United States are still trying to decide whether Internet addiction is a real illness, China is taking this disorder very seriously. They’ve opened several Internet addiction clinics and camps to treat hundreds of children and teenagers who spend hours and hours each day online.

They have them eating, playing and socializing with other kids in the real world instead of sitting in front of a computer living in a virtual world. In extreme cases, the patients receive drugs and some even get shock therapy to try to fix their problems. About 70 percent of the kids who leave the camps are cured when they leave.

The rest, I guess, go home and keep playing right where they left off. Unless their parents are smart enough to just lock up the computer and that’s the end of that.

In a recent poll, For example, 42 percent of Chinese young people admitted that they feel addiction to the Internet. Fortunately, only 18 percent of Americans felt the same way. So I guess we won’t be having Internet addiction clinics and camps and boot camps.

At least not for awhile.

THE ONLY REASON WHY CHINA IS TAKING THIS VERY SERIOUSLY IS THAT THEY WANT TO DECIDE WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS BAD FOR YOU.
THE CHINESE PRISONS ARE FULL OF PEOPLE SERVING LIFE-LONG SENTENCES FOR JUST MAKING A POLITICALLY WRONG STATEMENT ON THE INTERNET.

I think people can become addicted to anything they do. Success in closing deals can be addicting, can't it? Is that bad? You ( or your parents if you are minor) should be the only ones to judge unless you are hurting others by your addiction.

China in the virtual world can manage and execute faster learning and production, in turn, creates more excitment. Are they playing video games? or are they researching and inter-facing to the world? China has a much different view point on what addiction is and what is allowed to be accepted in their way of life. Shock waves...not sure if that would be accepted in America.

America has lost it's edge. Playing video games, internet fun or watching t.v. Which one is the worse? We think the cell phone is a far worse crime than any internet fun, school activities, or inter-facing in person or around the globe would do. For one reason: Parent control.
Why do kids have cell phones? Why do they text message when a person can E-mail? Why did America allow cell phones in school? Why is America changing with instant contact gratification?

Our culture has changed in the real-world.

As I sit here, having spent another 16 hours in one day on the internet...I don't understand the problem. Just kidding. I try to limit my internet time to a couple of hours a day, but I do it in intervals of 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Just like shopping...I try to go in, get what I need, and get out as quickly as possible. Not much of a life if it's spent staring at a computer monitor day in and day out.

Americans lie...just as with every other addiction, most are in denial of their internet compulsion.

Anything is good in moderation, however if one looks back over the past hundred years of desk work one needs to know exercise and good health cannot be acquired on the net.

If one is to be successful one needs to operate in as much with real people face to face, and actuate one's dreams by way of sweat equity.

Merely writing about what one wants and needs is not enough. If life is unfair I say play by the rules and illustrate that your work is worth more than a salary measured by way of marginal poverty.

Now I know Mr Trump has recovered from Bankruptcy to climb the ladder of success and he did not do so playing on the net. That is why my time is limited, as I work my way to the top.

I am living in Maquaning Chaoyang Beijing for 2 months. I see so many people Email and playing games by cell phone. But in my area(Houses) there is no Internet Cafe. My area has many foreigners. And my very kind neibougher never send her kids to school. Home school. So I was even looking for computer donation program. Because I can't give them computers that I don't have now. By the way, she is a principle of kindergarden and there is computer room. Less Internet giving me heard time, even read this blog.
Sorry my miss spell.

I think it strange that all we are willing to do is discuss matters in China. What about matters here in te USA? We are plagued by so many issues, large AND small in our own backyard including not being concerned enough about the lack of governance over the internet.
So, who is to say what is "normal" an what is a addiction, it is all realitive.

Depending on what culture you are from, and depending on who you are, will depend on what normal is. What is normal in one place, is not always normal somewhere else.
In China, poverty that we would never accept as "normal" is very normal.

The standards for one culture can not always be compared to another. For example, in some cultures it is normal to allow "shake downs", still some people don't want to believe that we put up with it. It does however happen, is it fair, is it just is it right? Well who knows, depends on what yur idea of normal is. Of course people want to accept that such matters never happen, but in reality really much worse things other than children using the internet too much is going on.
Life gets a little complicated sometimes, and what we may think is normal in one culture, like in NY city for example, would STAND out like a thugs son in Tucson. So who is to say wht is normal and what is a addiction, or even who is providing what to who to get them addicted to what.... normal is to you, what normal is going to be, and it must be normal for us all to accept that the internet IS HERE to stay. Now then, who will govern over it?
This appears to be the real question. the question that deserves the attention of scholars and serious minded people, is.... who and what will govern over the beast we have created.

No one will feel surprised when you learn that in China the patients with the internet addiction clinics are teenagers and college students. Just image your only child is an internet addict and sometimes the whole family go out searching for him and two or three days later this addict is found in an internet cafe. What will you do if you have such a child? Or asked this way because it's part of US reality: what will you do if your teenage son is a drug addict?

Another harsh reality Chinese people have to face is that it's very hard for a young person to find a decent job without proper education. Education is the priority task for every parent if they do not want to worry about their child when they get old. I believe this is true all over the world even in the USA though we have Mr. Trump and Mr. Kiyosaki advocating financail literacy, which is badly needed by all the people no matter economy they live in.

As far as cultures are concerned, nothing is as it looks to the outsiders.

I appreciate what Mr. Trump said while talking about China and India in "Why We Want You to Be Rich" "It definitely means the world has some very viable competition." " We need to spend some time learning about this fascinating and dynamic country."

People learn more when they see themselves as observers instead of supervisors.

I haven't run across too many internet addicts - although myspace and chat rooms keep them up all night. I have encountered kids who were so addicted to video games that they would literally not eat, not sleep, not go to school, and wet their pants before shutting it down. Some even slept with the controler. Thank goodness in the fifteen years I've worked with kids, I have only come across a few. My question is what are their parents thinking? But then, I realize, they were probably doing the same thing. I would just remove the temptation. The really sad thing is they are so busy hiding from life that they have no success bank - except for being a super hero in a fantasy game. Take Guitar Hero - why not just take lessons?

Of course, as much time as I've spent on here recently, and you've spent approving messages, some might think we needed to do a little boot camp. If I have to do hard time, I hope its in a tropical climate.

To my opinion, internet addiction is becoming a serious problem nowadays. If you have kids that are on the computer and/or Internet for any length of time, you know that getting them to log off can be quite a chore. That’s why many parents turn to Internet filters to protect their children. As for me, I use http://www.internettimer.net/ by my friend’s advice. It’s easy-to-use and helps me set specific time periods for use by each child in the family.
