Working the Graveyard Shift

Do you work nights? It may be harmful to your health. Like UV rays and diesel exhaust fumes, working the graveyard shift will soon be listed as a "probable" cause of cancer.

Scientists suspect that overnight work is dangerous because it disrupts the body’s biological clock. In addition, a hormone which can suppress tumor development is normally produced at night. People who work nights also tend to sleep less. Not getting enough sleep makes your immune system vulnerable to attack, and less able to fight off cancerous cells.

If this theory is correct, millions of people worldwide could be affected. Experts estimate that nearly 20 percent of the workers in developed countries work nightshifts.

But don’t get too worried. There are still plenty of skeptics. Maybe the only side effect to working the night shift is that you end up going to bed alone.

Dear Mr Trump,

Are you already at the office?

I work late night.

I am naturally more active at night.

And am on my way to own my own business with the courses I am doing at Trump U.

Make it a great end of year 2007. Wish you more success this 2008.

When a person starts their working career as a night worker, you have to be in tuned to the benifits and to it's disadvatages.

More pay, more wages, more opportunity to grow and maybe end up at a daytime shift with a better opprtunity and growth. Long term, it can really be a dis-advantage, due to lack of rest, lack of eating healthy, proper diet and excercise. Not to mention, finding a balance for family and friends with a path that fits for you.

However, ill effects would not be there until far greater down the road....what is worse than cancer? To us, no inspiration to find your path that fits. That is a far worse crime than ill effects of night shifts...if you fail. What life can be with or with-out your true self.

The World is more demanding this day, how can we compete when we sleep ?

How right you are!

Sleeping alone is not the worst way to wake up, especially if the person next to you snores so loud you can't sleep anyway.

Does this mean "night owls" have cancer?

Dear Mr. Trump,

We all need to watch out for our health, & especially those who work the graveyard shifts.
But even if one works the those shifts, and one experiences the side effect of going to bed alone because of it, one ought to NEVER EVER give up!! Just think of all those beautiful available nurses out there working those graveyard shifts, who get off work at the same time!
They know how to provide good health care & make sure we all stay healthy & in good shape!

Have a very Happy and Healthy New Year, Mr. Trump and Trump University Staff!! Cheers!!
Looking forward to watching the new Apprentice Show in '08 !!!

For many parents working graveyards means they stay ontop of the family during the day. Yes less sleep, but I certainly don't sleep alone at the end of the day. Four on four off the kids wake me constantly during the day. I like to think this is a reflection of my productivity and good character because I know many men who would not compromise their sleep schedule to enhance the supervision and success of their homelife. In short I may have tumors from twenty years of duty but I would rather have a tumor from working nights and minding my children 24/7 than the alternative tumors from digging a ditch for a pipeline during the day.

"Getting to bed alone" is not any better for the overall health of man or woman if you ask me. I am to marry a man who SNORES so loud I go for days without enough sleep, after any length of time I turn into a lunitic. After a year of being together we finally figured out the problem, and now I take something to help put me into a deeper state of sleep so no MATTER HOW LOUD HE GETS, I still get some sleep. Not sleeping at night, is really not good for this chick!
I was staring to feel like a lunitic, and when you feel like a lunitic, you tend to act like one. I love the guy, so I guess I will have to find some way to adapt. Getting to bed alone, is not the way I want to spend my life. Even if I get the sleep I require, I would wake up all alone, and I think I would really miss him. I never thought about it till now, but maybe having seperate work/sleep shifts is a viable option in a situation like ours. Know anyone who needs a writer on Graveyard shift? How about an electrician? We can and will relocate to NY today... just send the jet over to pick us up and we are there!
In all fairness, it is really hard to work this situation out, and when your butt ass tired it is really hard to make a good decision the following day. I don't know how people cope who never get to sleep at night, IT DRIVES me utterly nuts.

Again, whenever I see studies, I want to know more details about how the data was collected and what exactly was measured and interpreted and how. When you are comparing humans, they aren't isolated in lab cages. They have other variables that may be contributing factors in the result. What chemicals are they exposed to on the job? Is there asbestos in the building? What about at risk behaviors such as smoking? Are they all on equivalent diets? Are they all similar age? Do they have similar lifestyles and activity levels outside of work? I have also read that some of this may be attributed to a reduced exposure to natural sunlight. I do think sleep is very important to your health.
