America's Most Wanted Workers

Many companies are cutting jobs, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of jobs out there.

As more workers from the Baby Boomer generation retire, millions of jobs are becoming available in a variety of industries and managers are having trouble filling those positions.

Many times, it’s because today’s young professionals are more focused on careers that require critical thinking and computer skills rather than jobs that require working with their hands. Often, it’s just a lack of qualified candidates.

In any case, according to Manpower Inc.’s Talent Shortage Survey, some of the jobs most in need of qualified workers right now include sales representatives and teachers, accountants and management executives.

For people who like manual labor, there are lots of openings for mechanics and freight truck drivers, machine operators and construction laborers, delivery drivers and engineering technicians.

So, yes, it’s a tough job market out there, but not if you know where to look.

Why computer is the favorites ? it's all because Bill Gates. for decades, he is in the top list of the richest man in this planet, and he was from computer business. also we all know about Google miracle, technologies boom etc.

but at least we back to the law of supply and demand. if something going too much, the job opportunities became tougher, but if everybody left it, the job opportunities grow like crazy. it's like end of 1990's when everybody go to dot com, Warren Buffet buying boots factory, everybody laugh at him, but in the end we know who laughing.

In this article it becomes obvious to me that labor jobs deserve better pay than that of the softer jobs such as computer and related communications industries. In the best of worlds labor jobs should earn with the potential to rise to the top.

For example consider a hotel.

Ask anyone housekeepers work the hardest and endure the most insulting discoveries in their line of work. Not only do consumers insult housekeepers, but so do the collegues who earn more than the housekeeper.

There is something wrong when I see housekeepers with science and math degrees working under such dreadful conditions, with zero dignity, and to compound this the job requires they listen to the media wonder if their getting their monies worth from said foreign worker.

My first thought global warming, why are these scientists not joining forces to overcome global warming ? Why are we not inviting them to discover new sources of energy ? Instead I find heaps of foreign workers in dead end jobs such as housekeeping with massive intelligence neglected.

I think the economy has created its own mess and its time to stop blaming the little guy at the bottom of the totem pole, we are wasting precious time to discover more effective and productive answers not just for a few good men, but for that of the world at large.

America has lost many good workers. That had passion and went way beyond the limits of making the company prosper into their markets. For what? No extra pay or compensation and then budget cuts. And more cuts. We are thankful for our jobs. However, the caution is their for companies that lost the passion of their work-force. No competitive edge. Why go the extra mile for them?

America has jobs, but lower paying jobs that will not pay the bills. No passion for dead end jobs.
What are we going to wear and where are we goind to eat...at which dinner table? We are too tired at the end of the day to worry. America lost it's edge. No passion.

IMO, America is a suffering nation at this point and time and those who don't see or feel it aren't paying enough attention. As another poster mentioned, 'we' are just too busy. Even those of us with a pretty decent level of discretionary income need to be wary right now. Sure, there are plenty of jobs out there in varying fields, but many so-called knowledge workers, manual laborers and those in between are coming to the realization of what China, India, etc. are and what this means on the world scale and most importantly, to America, her freedoms and future prospects. All that is purported to be great about the USA such as individualism, freedom, just law, opportunity and strength is being shoved to the backseat as globalization and multiculturalism are the new doctrine. We are no longer shining a beacon to the world so much as taking in their ever-increasing and never-ending overflow. Our children have been reared with this garbage for nearly 2 generations now. I believe that they are already starting to smell the foul odor and they, like us, aren't looking for 'jobs,' they are looking for sense of purpose and gainful employment with future prospects where they are respected as people and citizens.

America's most TRULY wanted workers at this point are patriotic, community-based problem solvers with a backbone. It doesn't matter what the field. Nothing short of that is going to correct our course. In other words- it isn't the job that counts, it's the character and level of American tenacity.

I've been thinking about this post; trying to think of an eloquent way to say what first came to mind. However, it's quite simple... in layman's terms: As someone mentioned, it's all about technology these days, and that is what kids are being versed in, first and foremost.

The education system began breaking down when so many schools did away with recess...then, also, a required physical education class. I understand that Governor Schwarzenegger and others are on a mission to get children fit again, but that doesn't seem a priority for children's progress.

Recess and P.E. are just as vitally important as academics, but everyone seems to think that if the kids use that extra time for studying, that they will have an edge. Short term, this might have seemed like a good idea, but over time has not proven positive. Kids need those breaks (recess) to regroup and improve social skills, and, they need P.E. class, as well...for that strong body/strong mind connection.

My point? Aside from the kids who take part in extracurricular physical activities, America is producing a bunch of lazy, marshmallow bodied kids...devoid of the energy required to endure manual labor.

Everyone figures...oh, that's okay...the Mexicans & other immigrants will do those jobs. They might fill that void for a while, and continue with a good work ethic, but even immigrants can be influenced by the poor work ethic of so many Americans.

I've always worked diligently in every job that I've had, and, noticed that in NYC a great part of the service industry is made up of recent immigrants to the United States. That's great...as they were all legal (as far as I knew...many were studying for their test to become citizens, and knew more about the USA, than most natural born citizens). However, I noticed that there were a few who saw how lazy their co-workers were, and decided to really blend in with American workers and do as little work as possible. On one occasion, I couldn't help myself and I asked one worker if that was how he behaved in Mexico? He said, "no," and laughed...like, this is what you get to do in America... stand around, do as little as possible, and get paid. Nice.

It's so difficult to find disciplined people who will perform manual labor. There are still plenty in the mid-west who are willing to do the work...but, even they are influenced by the media and what is happening on the coasts.

Am I nuts? I think I am. Briefly, or, in a nut shell... It might be a good thing if recess and P.E. class were made mandatory again in schools so prospective workers won't be afraid to get their hands dirty...and, will have the energy to do so. It won't do us a lot of good to have a nation of people who only sit in front of the television or their computer screens.

As long as we are speaking about America's Most Wanted Workers, there is another area that is desperately in need of workers, now that all of the outsourcing of customer service representative jobs was not such a great idea, after all.

It seems that so many major corporations that rely so heavily upon customer service, decided that it would be a good idea to outsource to India because they work for such a low pay-rate. However, the executives didn't take into account the fact that, even though they were saving, short-term, by paying a third party to handle their calls, the low-wage earning workers from India would not be able to properly communicate to consumers in the USA.

Finally, after complaint upon complaint, and those companies experiencing loss of revenues due to customers canceling accounts, many companies are realizing that outsourcing to India and the like, was not such a great idea. Americans want to speak to Americans about their products and services.

I've recently learned a great deal about this situation because I suffered a tragic set-back and lost everything. I was forced to pound the pavement, in order to find something, short of flipping burgers. Even though I have a very strong skill set and experience in many fields, I had to find something...anything, to get some kind of cash flow going again. I only wish that I would have read Mr. Trump's books sooner, and, I wish that I would have known about Suzy Orman, and, that I would have done everything differently. That said, I didn't, so I had nothing to fall back on when I encountered a myriad of problems.

I could have gone to work at a higher paying position, but that turned out to be one of those quid pro quo situations. Yes, those types of opportunities still exist, even with all of the sexual harassment suits going on. So, I have lowered myself to working as a customer account executive, formerly known as customer svc. rep.

Even though I have taken steps down, at least I am starting o/with a clean slate, and I am being judged by my merit, and it is a fun challenge. And, I know that any progress that I make is due to the fact that I am a great worker, not because I look cute in a skirt and heels. I know that some people are happy to depend entirely upon their physical attributes to get ahead, but that is such an unfulfilling prospect long-term.

My problem with my current position is this...I work for a billion dollar cable company, but, not really....I don't work directly for them. This particular U.S. company outsources to a third party. You might be asking, "What is wrong with that? You are American, working in the U.S.A., right?" Yes, that is true... but the American company for which I work, outsources to a third-party conglomerate from INDIA! Do you not find that odd? Why, if this U.S. company is so successful, do they have to involve a foreign third party? Wouldn't it be more cost effective to hire the customer account execs. as their own? For what it costs to pay the third party, they could pay the actual workers higher wages, and, perhaps, attract a better quality employee.

Could it be that those corporations get some type of tax incentive or something for outsourcing? It just seems like a waste to include a foreign middle man.

The job, itself, would be attractive to a lot of young people because they get to talk to people all day, learning communication and soft skills, and it involves computer navigation. It's a fantastic interim job for anyone, really. Americans want to speak to real-live, helpful Americans, instead of foreigners whom they don't understand, or, to an automated system. However, they think that it is beneath them to be that contact person. It's not a bad job, at all. It is by no means, glamorous, and just as demanding as serving people in a restaurant, but, it is quite rewarding when I am able to satisfy the consumer, leaving them with a positive feeling about their choice of cable company

Are you hiring Mr. Trump? I sure can use a job that pays real money right now.
I never wanted to be a truck driver or mechanic or a construction worker. Beauty
may be found in these businesses if you know where to look. As far as a job
I will love, I need to get my reading glasses adjusted. I must be missing the fine
print.

The comments posted are the best I have read lately. The authors really understand what
is happening to American jobs. This is important because it opens the window and lets in
fresh ideas for change. I don't think housekeepers should be paid so little money either.
They are the backbone of any hotel business. Without them, nobody would pay for a room
that has clean sheets and an empty wastebasket.
What I don't understand is why workers tolerate these conditions. If writers for television
can be union members and go on strike to get the benefits they want, why don't housekeepers unite and demand better benefits? New York City has an enormous number
of workers who could join a union and be represented so they can make higher wages.
Eventually the foreign-born scientists and math professionals will get hired in their field.
The waiting is the problem. Take some time to communicate with others in this position. Maybe a solution will be found. I need to do the same thing. Cash flow is a serious issue.
I need to put some of the ideas on the internet to use, so I can climb out of this cash poor
situation I find myself in. It was great hearing from all of you.

Highly cultivated = highly wanted... what we have endured over the last three months:-
By Tammie Coffey

My husband was unemployed for nearly three months, in that time our home based business has gone down the toilet because we did not have the income to keep the minimal order in so that we could profit from the endless hours of work product it takes to market a home based business. I was furious, in fact I still may be a tad bit furious (shhh don’t tell anyone). As our lives take on new shape, when there is a loss of a major source of income and our dreams get put on hold it can be so hard on the family. I know our home has endured one of the most difficult financial times that I have EVER known in my entire life, and I find myself wondering how or why we got here. I was on track I keep telling myself, pursuing my academic dreams my husband was working as a electrician. Then everything changed, and stayed that way for nearly three months. It was moot at best to work on the business I had been bending over backwards to market, because there was no way to profit from our MLM without the income to keep it going. At last, he is back at work, and I am working on my thesis again. It feels like we are getting closer to what I wanted for a life, but when you take away the money or adjust the situation and shift assets in any situation nothing is ever the same. Sometimes the work you did in days prior, pays off when you least expect it, but really need it-
In the last three months we have nearly lost our car, moved into a ghetto (to save money), and had negative marks on both of our credit reports. My education has been put on hold, and the trauma of all that change can honestly be just far more than families are prepared to endure. I can see how and why the housing markets are what they are, people under high levels of stress looking for new labor markets just are not in the market to buy a new house. I keep hoping that my research efforts will pay off, and continue to pursue the dreams that seem to be there even when the money is not. I am not sure what other people are doing, but I know that as the times have shifted in our house that my focus has also shifted and it drives me to pursue those things that money really cannot buy anyway. I find myself lost in thoughts that include true self-discovery and if that is going on all over America then I am convinced we will all emerge as a stronger Nation. I do honestly hope that those who are out of work now are being innovative and creative, in this practice perhaps we will re-emerge as a Nation of Hybrids of sorts, savvier than the rest of the globe. This is my wish for our home, this seems to be the path difficult as it may be that we are on- we are creating new markets, and it looks to me that we may be the leaders of those markets if and when we decide to engage our creative imaginations in the downtime that we are presently experiencing. Nothing lasts forever I am told, the way we were all living on borrowed time and credit had to change sooner or later, in many ways this change sucks- but in 5-10 years when we are the leaders in many of the global markets we will be glad for the time we are taking now to reevaluate what we all share as members of the human race. The next greatest commerce we will know, will happen if and when we enter the phase of wanted to get to know more about other cultures, and letting them know more about ours. When we stop letting just the politicians do this for us, we will enter a time of amazing economic and personal growth. Those people with problems in the housing markets would be wise to be innovative with the property instead of jumping ship and moving into apartments- either way they have to live somewhere.

My best wishes to you all-

Bill Gates would make a good Vice President. I do wish McCain would add him to his ticket perhaps Bill Gates (Not Clinton) is the guy we really need to get some things back on track. Now that would indeed be a hard ticket to beat- and for once we could coud on some serious situations getting taken care of. If he is not available perhaps the Trumpster could run as McCains running mate- the point is- we need SOMEONE in government who knows how to deal with money and HAS a proven TRACK record of turning a profit, if we are going to grow from the inside out.
In a situation such as what we are experiencing I do wish one of the two men mentioned would take in upon himself to step down from his empire for four years and help out- we could sure use some help. Besides, I honestly think the Trumpster could teach McCain a thing or two about dress code- and if it were Bill Gates then maybe we could get some computer situations updated and get ourselves positioned in the global markets- either way someone should take McCain shopping in either NY or LA and show him what a sexy man in a suit can look like. Sex that man up! (Just a little) Not too much please leave him in tack to run the Nation- with the advice from his new friends. Surely someone knows someone who could help me convince his staff he needs a fresh new look- and a smart sexy running mate who has a talent for business.

I am always working at my own pace and giving it my full focus and attention. In the world many jobs require datelines and sales targets to be met. I am my own boss, I have my own schedule and I love being the pilot in my on plane. Say out there Work is not available to suit you 100% make your own business be your own boss. Create jobs rather than look hither tither getting nowhere in life. I am into education health and auto mobiles it all sums up to self drive and discipline. A 10 hour job is great, but entreneourship is a 24 hour job. I see math calculations in my sleep! My eyes are always searching for opportunites 24 7. I can see out there lots of people loafing. Start making sandwiches for workers on the subway, or teach english to international students in college, jobs are always there, u can find one, or create one. Be assured if you try out something with enough knowledge u discover there is an entrepeneur in you without you realising it.

This is an interesting topic. In one management class, a guest speaker spoke of how she grew into the position she developed over her career, based on company needs and her interests. She worked in the field of education, and had for about 40 years. She was about to retire that year. Following her retirement, I spoke to a friend from her offices. My friend told me they had to hire two full-time workers and one half-time worker just to fill the duties on this woman's job description. My point is that as the baby boom generation retires, some jobs will open up - but not all jobs will. I have seen employers divide the job description among the other employees, just increasing the work load while reducing labor costs too. I think the main thing is to realize jobs aren't going to just fall into your lap. If knocking on doors, calling on friends, and traditional methods don't work, try creating your own.
