The Hunt for Super-Efficient Cars

So many people complain about what we’re doing to the environment. Well, here’s at least one chance where people - specifically car manufacturers -- can get paid to do something about it.

The Automotive X Prize is a $10 million contest aimed at promoting the creation of cars that get somewhere around 100 miles per gallon while also meeting good standards for low greenhouse-gas emissions, safety, and affordability. In other words, these cars have to be super-efficient and people have to be able to afford them.

The contest organizers point out that years and years ago the Ford Model T got 25 miles per gallon and many of the cars that we drive today get less than that. So we’re going backwards, not forwards, in efficiency.

So far, more than 60 teams are competing including Tesla Motors, which has already started production of a two-seat, electric-powered sports car. It’s a good bet that the winner will get snapped up by one of the major auto manufacturers and guess what? You may even become rich.

The cars will be pitted against each other in a cross-country race and the fastest vehicle will win the prize.

Money talks and $10 million is a lot of money, so this might actually work.

Great article...a good ide to win in a contest!

We love lower gas prices, and we only add that the technology is already there so why did the government not help? A little spice for a manufacture would have helped the economy.

Too many and manufactures miss key elements of safty and what really sells the public.
Every see the car? Vision or quality? There are lots of posibilitys just with old cars...that got missed. It could be an easier fix.

I was just thinking yesterday morning how fuel-efficient cars are exactly what is needed right now! Thanks so much for creating this contest, Mr. Trump. You are a real upstanding guy!

1. they really super efficient in using fuel
2. no pollution either
3. Cheaper than cars
4. we can eat them

Many people forget that cars entered in a great new era. Any picture of Time Square 100 years ago clearly illustrates how much dung would have been present in the streets, spreading sickness & disease.

Cars will get much more efficient at a staggering price. Automotive manufacturer estimates include a $6-10K for the improved fuel efficiency ( to meet the 35mpg req't).

The clear solution is to raise the price of gas, not government oppression. With gas over $3 a gallon, people will naturally choose more efficient vehicles.

The technology that comes out of those contests will be the inspiration that many businesses should launch from. Last night we got a e-mail for a set of instructions that help you turn your car into a machine that is 60% more efficient. The directions cost $50 bucks, and the e-mail claims that you can buy everything you need at your local hardware store to use WATER in your gas tank!

I have learned that if it sounds too good to be true it might be, but on the other hand it would be an awesome business that IS A ABSOLUTE CASH cow if you could turn cars THAT PEOPLE HAVE, and are paying for NOW, into cars that are 60% more efficient. Using what we already have and upgrading the existing systems is the actual solution I do believe that will be launching a multitude of CASH COW businesses. I told my husband "that would generate so much business that we could never even imagine being able to keep up with the flow of demand IF THE technology WORKS". We could charge $100 per car to put the systems on them and never run out of cars to upgrade.

It might be genuine I don’t know, we will most likely buy the instructions next week and see what is involved. This week our cash flow is tied up in marketing our existing business, I wish that thing would take some wings and start to fly!

Any business is like a baby, you have to feed it, nurture it and hope it grows up to be fruitful, it has been a long time coming for us here in America to be focused on fuel efficiency its just too bad it took all this to get us there!

My best of luck to all the contestants- I would love to see my website painted on the side of the winning car!

Many years before I became Trump U's Executive Editor, I had occasion to rebuild a Model T engine as a project my auto shop class in high school. It was a model of simplicity. Instead of an oil pump, it had little scoops on the bottom of the connecting rod journals that literally picked oil up from the oil pan and tossed it up into the engine. But against a modern engine of similar displacement, it couldn't hold a candle in terms of efficiency, performance or clean exhaust.
So it will be interesting to see what all the advanced thinkers will concoct in their search for an ultra-efficient efficient car. One thing for sure - unlike a Model T, you won't be able to fix it with a hammer or a hair pin.

good morning!
with regard to member1440808 comments about increase the price of fuel to $3 a gallon- i'm in the UK and we are paying about $2.40 a litre which equates to over $10 a gallon!! we still have traffic jams and people still drive the gas guzzlers! people like their comfort and cars!

the hydrogen fuel cell car is starting to come to fruitition now so that will be great whenit makes it to full production.

electric cars have improved massively over the years and some of them are now reaching over 200miles on one charge - enough to do the school run maybe hey??

solar power is also making interesting inroads (no pun intended!) in australia.

i think you should be able to run a car on water with electrolysis - burn the hydrogen with the oxygen and produce water which you feed back through the system.
could that be self contained?

would the car/oil industry just buy the patents and not release it to the general public because the oil industry is so profitable??
they've already done it with a car that runs on chicken manure - methane. and that was in the early 80's.

so the technology is there and its up to us to do something about it!

i cant be the only one that thinks like this surely??

we can take the big boys on at their own game - and win - if we all pool our ideas!

let me have your thoughts on it all

keep smiling and keep safe

WARNING:
{ . . . the following is not a parody/ . . . }

Dear Sir(s) and Madams,

With all due respect which I do show to all other Billionaires I happen to cross paths on my life's journey; may I say something here?

What is WRONG with the vehicles we have now that are getting a minimum of 24 mpg for starters? For at least some of the market, this proves, is feigning an attempt at conservation. Next we have the truly efficient passenger vehicles attaining that MIRACULOUS figure of THIRTY Miles per Gallon! WOW! Isn't THAT! . . . where WE, the U.S.; as a country, promised ourselves (along with the Middle East and the rest of the World), that we would BE by now - Some 30 years ago - post Arab Oil Embargo [1973] and during the mid 1970's in the first place??? I am not making this up!
We passed laws in Congress attesting to these FACTS, did we not !?!?!

I was pretty young then but I don't think I was dreaming at the time when those original Fuel Economy Standards were first introduced.

Looks like bad luck really does, or can happen to you when you GO BACK on your word, huh?

If America were to be tried in a Court of Law using American Standards that we force others to adhere to internationally, and used these same principles we hold so dear in the case of:

"Fuel Efficiency guidelines" vs. the "Circumvention of such guidelines" . . .

Then ANY U.S. Court using the American Precedent would have no other choice but to find "America" in contempt. AND! GUILTY of Gas-Guzzling with Blatant Reckless Abandon.

This would also make every SUV ILLEGAL, which they are already in my opinion.
Whatever happened to saving some pavement for future generations?

I so love Mr. Trump's blog, but someone please tell him that American DOES NOT want to see any more of Heather Mills. Please don't put her in the next Apprentice or I'll have to stop watching.
[-] Posted by member1554929 on 04/15/2008 8:05 PM
. . . "tell him that American" . . .

What? . . . Doesn't want to see who?

Make some sense #3356; or I'll find a way to get some cents out of ya!

As in : $3.39/gallon and only climbing higher!

I hope you know the show ended with Piers winning not anyone close named Heather, (?) sir!

Do any of the readers drive a Corvette? I have for many years. The price of gas was not an issue on that beautiful day a "diamond" of a car was parked in my garage. It is everything and more than the advertisers claim. I can't imagine replacing this car with an "experiment" that runs on solar power, a battery, or water. This sounds like a "wind up toy" instead of a perfect performance car. Style and grace are important to me. SUV's hog the road, take too long at the gas pump to fill up, and block my view until I pass it.

If the price of gas is the only criteria for changing cars, I'd rather complain about the price and pay it than see a beautiful and perfectly maintained Corvette become a museum exhibit like dinosaur bones are now. "Ride the Wave" and see if you don't know the difference.

Cheryle,

Come on now...I have driven tractors that are more comfortable than Corvettes. I once went out with a guy who had a Silver Anniversary Vett. He would park it next to the window at the restaurant when we went out to eat so that he could keep an eye on it. I hope you don't do that...

Smart cars are the wave of the future. Many of them already exceed the 100 mph qualification with little or no emissions. The problem will not be how to stop CO2 emissions, but how to replace our once protective ozone layer. The layer of smog from our emissions currently serves as a protective barrier between us and the extreme solar radiation which would otherwise penetrate our ozone depleted atmosphere.

So, while we are working to solve our problems associated with our energy dependence on non-renewable sources, we must have an equally balanced plan for renewing our ozone.

People who drive Corvettes stay current with issues concerning the environment. Most do not drive their cars for the entire year, saving on gas and pollution. Most do not drive their car like a work car traveling long distances five days a week. Most prefer not to take it on the road in bad weather conditions which can cause accidents like the pile-ups on snowy days in New England.

They are cult-like buyers and very loyal to the brand. They respect each other, and value new and better ways to improve their cars. They value maintenance, and spend more money on keeping their "investment" in great shape than people who drive a Toyota.

If you have a problem with gas emmissions (especially in China) I doubt that you can blame the Corvette for being a major polluter.

Just drive in rush hour sometime and count the number of Corvettes you see. I can guarantee, it's not too many.

"I was considering buying a new car, one that would reduce my trips to the gas station and that would produce fewer emissions, but the waiting list for a hybrid was too long and to save fuel

If the auto manufacturers were providing the product that the market wants, they wouldn't be in the position they are in today. I have always loved these contests, and the great results they achieve from year to year, but note how many of those proven performance ideas have been incorporated in the auto industry. Have any? The truth is that a fuel efficient car would be in high demand. The result would be reduction in fuel purchases. Oil companies recognize this as a threat. Thus, they have these plans purchased and destroyed. That way they can maintain the high demand for their product.

If there is a super-efficient car, many people will rush to the company, which sell this kind of car. These days, owning and maintaining a car seems to be pricey for many. And we all know that automotive expenses pile up quickly, as fuel costs – thankfully low now, but they will be returning – then you have maintenance, insurance, and then extras like stereo equipment and so on. A car can run you into payday loans easily, and during an economy in recession, it doesn't seem justifiable. Want to save? Here are some tips. First, don't drive short distances. A two block trip to the grocers is actually one of the worst things to do to your engine. Walk if you can. Use public transport, and also don't lead foot. You use more gas, and those tickets can get nasty-- some automotive expenses you don't want. Read more at http://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/2009/03/31/surviving-recessio...
