Higher Gas Prices = Lower Worker Productivity

As gas prices climb higher and higher, the costs hurt people in more places than just their wallets.

The more people pay at the pump, the more employees get stressed - even on the job - which results in lower productivity.

People who are concerned about high gas prices let that stress carry over into their work lives. Researchers say they are significantly less attentive when they’re on the job. They’re less excited about going to work, less passionate and conscientious and more tense. All that combined equals overall lower productivity.

Of course, higher gas prices have all kinds of other trickle-down effects. For example, more than half of Americans have reconsidered taking vacations this summer. Forty-five percent have had to cut back on credit card payments in order to keep their tanks full and nearly one-third have even had to consider going without basics such as food, clothing and medicine.

Oil prices keep setting record highs and Americans are paying for it at the pump, in their jobs and in their lives. If the economy doesn’t get fixed soon, it’s going to take a long time before we recover from this recession. And it’s definitely a recession. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Survival of the fittest! Welcome to REALITY, people! Those of us who are used to making daily sacrifices because we are the "have nots" are not as critically phased by this recession. Those of us who have lived our lives in a recession look at this as "leveling out the playing field." Let's see what people are really made of when everything isn't handed to them on a platinum platter, shall we?

There are too many Americans who have never had to go without - saturated with luxuries, and, live life in a fantasy world. Oh, woe is me...cry me a river...gas prices are too high! I'm so stressed! Good! How are they feeling the crunch? They're down to one tanning session a week? Awwww... that's just terrible! They actually have to wear the same outfit twice? OMG! It must be the end of the world! What? You mean, they actually have to do work when they show up to their place of employment, and, not just have a fashion show and gabfest?

Stress, eh? They have no idea of how to productively deal with stress because their lives have been free of any type of real challenges. The minute they feel the heat, Daddy Warbucks or some other financial security guard swoops in and makes everything better. "There, there, little baby, it's okay...don't be stressed! Here's some gas money. I don't want you to miss your liposuction appointment, since you ate too much fried chicken and ice cream -- enough for a family of five (and, now your ass is three inches bigger than last month and looks like a waffle)." I know, I've seen these people in action in Palm Beach County. I'm sure it's the same in Hollywood.

I have no pity for idiots who can't deal with the stress of higher gas prices! That is so bogus! Suck it up, and stop being a bunch of spoiled rotten brats for a change! When you want to whine and moan about gas prices, take a deep breath and think about those in our military who are risking their lives for us so that we can drive around in cars. Think about the stress of a soldier, and, I think you might keep your yapper shut! Be grateful that there are so many who choose to take on that stress for us...so that we can sit around and cry like little babies because we have to miss a pedicure.

If you have a bunch of whining idiots at your work place, crying about fuel costs, maybe you should consider hiring people who really want to work. See how resourceful those spoiled brats are when they're forced to find a new job...in a recession!

It looks and sounds like a recession to me. We should all give pause to how high gas prices are not only impacting workers but their personal lives. I wonder how single working parents are making ends meet and having time to care for their children - not everybody earns a professional salary. I can't think of any single business that is not impacted by higher fuel costs. It's a vicious economic cycle spiraling to the ground. Something needs to be done - the ground is coming up fast!

Donald,

What do people like you do in times like these?
Well I guess its best to be like a sponge soaking up all the money when there's plenty and slowly releasing it when there's not enough. Recessions come and go. Every country will have their own good and bad times. No country is perfect. However knowing what to do when these times hit is very critical. You can't go out there and earn as much as you did during the good times, and you can't spend all you have during these uncertain times either. You need to portion whatever you have so that you can survive the long drought. And nobody will know how long the drought will last.

I can definitely see how the higher gas prices can cause some stress which
ultimately leads to lower productivity. Doesn't seem like there is anything that
the average consumer can do about the higher gas prices that's why it's important
to try and cut back your expenditures in every other area that you can possibly think
of.

Wow, if Donald Trump says we're in a recession, we'd better believe it. It's not just gas prices I'm worried about. I actually have a very short commute so I am fortunate, although it's still affecting my budget. I eat in restaurants a lot and the prices have all gone up so much, in every single type and place of dining establishment. And even if I buy food at the store, those prices have gone up so much too. And my rent also keeps going up. And my insurance (at least I have some) is terrible and I have quite a few doctor bills. And yet I still get the 3% raise every year, which is better than nothing but it cannot keep up with the cost of living.

Dear Mr. Trump,
With regards to your writing that we are "in a recession", I find myself wondering what that means to you and others who have never had to go to bed wondering if you could feed your children the next day or wondering how you were going to keep the lights on and make it till the next payday? This "recession" has been going on for years and because "gas prices" have skyrocketed now everyone is feeling the brunts of it. How ironic that prices have slowly been creeping up on everything in this country but we are just "now" noticing it and griping about it. Recession has been a reality for a long time. If you consider the welfare recipients, the unemployment status, the "working poor". This "recession" as you call it isn't just gas prices soaring higher, its the way the government handles our lives. We as consumers keep paying the higher prices and then go home and secretly talk about it but do nothing to change it. We have a voice, we have let the government convince us that they are "doing their best" to keep us out of "this recession" when they are the ones who put us in it to begin with. We are not in this "recession" just because of high gas prices alone so if anyone at work gripes about the gas prices, they need to go to the grocery store and do a little more homework on the high prices of "everything" in this country. I hear the news stories everyday and wonder how this country became the way it did, it certainly didn't occur overnight. We as consumers sit around and watch everything soar sky high and then have the nerve to "complain about it" when we come into a recession? Mr. Trump if I may be blunt, welfare is a recession, afdc is a recession, homelessness is a recession, non-child support is a recession to those who live it everyday. We put our blinders on to what realy goes on in this country and then when the big "news stories" come out, we sit back and go "oh my" and shake our heads in disbelief. This country should wake up and smell the coffee (if they can still afford it) and realize that we have been on a downward slump for quite some time now and its not just because of the high gas prices, we need to really dig deep and look at our economy and our government and ask them the questions that need to be asked, where is our money, what did you do with it and why is the country in the shape that it is in now. When did cereal become 5.00 a box and it doesn't even come with the special toys anymore? When did eggs become golden because they must be if I'm paying twice as much for them. Why again is milk over 4.00 a gallon when the same cows are still grazing on free grass? Why can my utility company go up on their rates when its the same electricity I have used for years? How can my telephone company charge me triple surcharges and taxes and then tax me again on those surcharges and taxes? How can I be forced to pay for digital t.v. just because I don't subscribe to cable television? How can "free" television now be something I have to pay for? How can the same pair of shoes I paid 10.00 for a year ago now be 40? We grew up using basic pencils and paper in schools and we learned and graduated. So how is it now to send your kid to school the list is 2 pages long and and it costs me a months salary to send my kid to school today with all the supplies they need? These are just some of the questions we need to be asking and then maybe we will find the "real" answers to this "recession" that everyone says we are in..

Sincerely,
a single mother struggling to keep her lights on and buy golden eggs........

Dear Mr. Trump,
Indeed it does look as if America is in a recession, this will be an exciting time to record, and there will be many lessons to record for future generations. There may be no way to "fight" the economic times" but clearly we can record them, and in so doing can we by default create a commerce in and of itself? I believe not only this is possible, but also I believe it has been done in the past yielding historic documents and lessons. One of the greatest problems I have noted regarding the involvement of government in any project is that the moment they get involved you can almost guarantee it will get complicated, regulated, and screwed up in some fashion. We may have started what I believe could open the door to many cultural questions in America, if we are willing to ask, and record, I believe that our time in this recession can be used wisely. In the end I envision coming out the other end with a record of those things left that are still great, and the remarkable records of what has gone wrong. I am willing to look for those things still great, and eager to speak first hand to people who may still have those qualities that are worth our time to record. In this, I believe we shall find a good use of our time, and a process of healing from inside out that is long overdue from the last eight years of trauma this administration has left us with. This project should be privately funded, and there must be guards in place to protect the intent to record this time in our great American journey- lest we be destined to repeat this lunacy. People, know better than government how to solve their own troubles, personal and otherwise- while the stress factors of oil are real, not imagined, it is also possible to grant the public something else to focus upon, that is also real not imagined- a truth, a piece of them- a story to follow- something that is genuine- yet does not patronize them- This I believe is what they will need – if we should empower the people this time in history- then they shall never need GOVERNMENT to solve future problems as they come up- they will have the skills, and record of how it was done!
"The plight of the unemployed writer, and indeed anyone who could qualify as a writer such as a lawyer, a teacher, or a librarian, during the early years of the Depression, was of concern not only to the Roosevelt Administration, but also to writers' organizations and persons of liberal and academic persuasions. It was felt, generally, that the New Deal could come up with more appropriate work situations for this group other than blue collar jobs on construction projects. To the Administration's liking were plans generated from a series of meetings held in 1934 between Jacob Baker, Harry Hopkins' chief Civil Works Administration assistant in charge of special and professional programs, Henry Alsberg, Bakers' assistant, Katherine Kellock, a writer familiar with international and social organizations, and others. The outcome of these sessions was a project for all the "arts," (labeled Federal One), divided administratively by each specialty and headed by professionals in the field. The Writers' Project, later characterized by some as the federal government's attempt to "democratize American culture," was approved for federal monies in June, 1935. Baker chose his assistant, Alsberg, as director. As the Project continued into the late thirties, the director was powerless to stop increasing criticism by reactionary Congressmen who were intent on shutting down the enterprise. In October 1939, the Project's federal monies ceased, due to the Administration's need for a larger defense budget. After 1939, emasculated, the Project sputtered along on monies funded to the states, closing completely one year or so after America's entry into World War II."

I find it sad that people show up for work and feel stressed out because of situations they have no control over.

Business is like a marriage,
"For better or worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part."

Even when people retire, they still are affected by business. The price of eggs go up. Should that mean I am supposed to go without breakfast at the neighborhood restaurant where I meet friends, share stories and laugh? I don't think so.

The quality of my life is more important than the $5.00 extra at the gas pump.

Higher gas prices will not cancel my summer vacation either. I plan on enjoying every minute of it.
What better way is there to relieve stress than doing something I enjoy? If I return home safely, I will be more alert, refreshed, and happy. I will have renewed energy to deal with a "recession" that I didn't create and have no CONTROL over.

If that's being "a rotten spoiled brat", then thank God for it!

And if I eat fried chicken, and gain a few pounds, I know how to take off the weight.

For some reason, soy food doesn't make me feel the same kind of pleasure.

To relieve stress... go out and do something that makes you happy! (Granny's Wisdom Remembered)

Dear Donald Trump!

How nice of you; SIR!, to take notice of how "the other half" has been living for decades!
The Aristocracy is now getting a taste of what we commoners down below the poverty line have always just simply called reality! "How will I get to work tomorrow," a common concern to me; for example, for ALL OF MY WORKING LIFE!!! Since I started mowing grass around the age of 13 to 14 years old, gasoline has been as much a concern today for me as it was way back then in 1974-75.
And Hallelujah! I was right! I knew that some day it would take a Super-Elite like yourself and others like you (Warren Buffet, e.g.) to stabilize things with your self-made wisdom, rationale, and exceptional intuitiveness. And now these days are finally here. [Do you get the idea that I have just been waiting for this day and age to arrive, yet Sir?] I would like to help you Billionaires put things back on track, but as a matter of fact, Sir - I don't even think a posse has been put together yet. As a Humble former Social worker who never earned a degree in anything but a quest for additional Knowledge, I realize the situation is dire; but even the few Millionaires I know have been strapped for some time.
Firing depressed workers is not the answer. Learning how the under class has coped with problems like these; 'every day" since the 1969 Moon Shot, may yield important clues for the ARISTOCRACY to overcome their newfound dilemmas. Personally, I'd like to know what Donald Trump and others like you think! I believe it is up to the Billionaires to save the greedy millionaires from themselves! And in the process be able to feed, clothe, and house everyone else too!

Sincerely Yours,

Mr. Trump,

I've been reading several of your books lately and have learned a great deal about your attitude and modus operandi. I see two key elements in your success, one is high intelligence and the second is a great understanding for human nature and life itself. You analysis of the gas price crisis is right on, and it's even more amazing is that it's an insite you derived outside of your own circumstances.

Your high caliber of thinking falls under the category of "GENIUS".

Thanks for passing along your knowledge in books, blogs and the example you set for everyone.

This is the beginning of major changes in the economy was expected not only by the inflation that is caused by speculation in the oil unless it is also a lack of financial information .If you look at this turbulence is equal to the difference around the world is that the person who does not have a clear goal, a plan of action defined, financial information, personal safety, creativity and character see this turbulence like a problem.and the person who has ,financial information ,personal safety and have creative mind that can be given at this time of crisis is born new ideas .The lack of productivity has to do with low self-esteem not with the conditions outdoors. The problem is that the employee not to realize is that the Because of creating everything in his life and at a time is of the mind that is the cause for resignation from the job that he realizes what we can give and, his value. If I were in a job desmotivated me the know that no more I retreat with social insurance that is something that payment and I will not charge or if he had a plan that 401k is a diversified fund in the stock market turbulence that as of now was losing money. but he who read this blog I invite you to explore the business world and spare no in his mind that it's time that you have the information or get richer and poor becomes more no other option and your boss dont tell you.Read and watch that most changed the global economy have not started college and no money to be quite the fantasy of a job and work hard to explore a better future, I am not saying not become a professional in your businessa professional in his business as I am saying is that the titles are not successful unless resultados.Ejemplo india is one of the richest countries and with the highest rate of people who can not read or write and with very good and successful people in the business world.

Dear Mr. Trump,

I really appreciate about the your worry. Of course it's an economic recession, like in my country (Cambodia), the price of goods are getting higher and higher, the electricity is cut almost everyday because of using fuel to run the generator. The Government issued more new currency. TV has been showing strikes in most countries because of the price of oil.

I don't understand why the Government in each country never use Price Floor and Price Ceiling. More than that the Opec, never tells their members' Governments to subsidy their exportation of oils.

My Prime Minister said " It's good so that everyone won't travel much, but everyone cry out eager to hear him says " I'm very worried about this problem because I'm a ruler" .

I hope God will give you wisdom to help the world to get out of this problem.

Please accept my highest respect.

God bless you.

Sincerely yours,

Dany

I don't know, Mr. Trump, Websters defines a recession as "a moderate slowdown in economic activity" and a depression as "a period of sever economic decline" I'm thinking we might have a little of both.

Thank you for providing this information! I absolutely agree to this article. These days, many people are dealing with stress due to the negative issues that they’ve often heard on the news including high food cost and gas prices which results in lower productivity because of poor performance on their work. But don’t let stress ruin your work performance. I know that most of you are tired of listening to bad news but you have to pay attention to this issue concerning Maytag voluntarily recalls refrigerators due to fire hazard. Yes, it’s true! There have been over 1 million units recalled. If you have one of the recalled units and there have been any ill effects from the unit, you are urged not to call the store you bought it from, but instead call the manufacturer directly, as they are offering free in-home repair related to the defective units. Not having a defective product would be ideal, but Maytag is being very generous about things.
