I love the Olympics. It’s amazing to watch the world’s greatest athletes all take the same playing field together.

Like so many time before, these Beijing Olympics have been wrought with controversy. Many people feel that President Bush should not have agreed to attend the opening ceremonies. They think that boycotting the event would’ve shown his concern about China’s horrid human rights’ record. But he said not attending would’ve been an affront to the Chinese people and he felt no need to connect the athletic event and politics.

Both Barack Obama and John McCain have echoed the calls of human rights groups, saying they would have boycotted the opening ceremonies had they been in the president’s place.

It’s a difficult position that politics have to play. These young people have worked hard - often most of their lives - for the chance to compete at the Olympics and for them, there’s nothing political about the event at all. They merely want to show their talents on a worldwide platform against incredible athletes.

I wish we could keep it about the athletes and their sports, but I know we can’t. To them, I say congratulations for making it that far. We’re impressed and proud and will be rooting for you. Bring home the gold!

I stand behind President Bush's action. We must NOT allow other external forces to modify our ongoing ceaseless cause(s) this wavering in actions would change the reflection of our overall character demeanor. ... stay the course America ... lead & pioneer; do not merely react to others...

best,

I too agree with President Bush. Him not being present would send a very bad message to the U.S. athletes competing. Regardless of the political aspect, our team deserves our support.

We are excited for the Olympics...go USA!

And we watch China. Not just in the resrictions of human rights, but by the rights of the Olmpic passion
with their inner passion of beliefs. To take that away...is very damaging to human rights as a Country that wanted to have leadership roles in the world.

We would only add that President Bush should be there...Not to make Political statements. But, as the Leader to support our Olympic ahletes...It is supposed to be a neutral ground of world compeition. Presidents should show support for the USA athletes...or for their own specific country. It is a bad idea to go further.

Go USA!

I agree. Our president should be at the opening games, but should make it clear that he is there to support our champions. The Olympics are no place to be making statements- it should not be a political event. The saddest Olympics for me personally was the year the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics for political reasons- hope that never happens again. I will be watching and cheering- mostly for the USA- but also for persons of every nation who overcome the struggles inside and triumph against the odds. The Olympics are an incredible testament to the human spirit and I hope that all people can learn from them to do their best in whatever challenge they are called to overcome. U-S-A!!! Go Team!

The president not attending the opening ceremonies would be a silly gesture that wouldn't change a thing in regards to China's human rights violations. It's about the athletes and the love of the games, it's about overcoming obstacles despite adversity. The president is going to honor that, not the hosting country.

The Olympics are a great opportunity for athletes from around the world to compete and experience other cultures...and even open up some people's eyes to the possibilities of freedom. It's an opportunity for a closed society to experience some enlightenment that they otherwise may not have.

I agree with you Mr. Trump. I like watching the athletes compete in sports they have a passion for. The quality of their performance is impressive, which makes it more of a visual pleasure. They represent important values in society such as improved health and fitness. Their clothing is of the finest quality and sets a good example for personal grooming. Their behavior towards one another is respectful, even though they are highly competitive.
I am confident that President Bush will represent our country well. He is a gentleman, with good manners and intelligence.
I am excited and look forward to watching the competitors "be the BEST they can be!"

You are so right. The Olympics is about sports and sportsmanship. Politics should play no role in them. I remember when Carter boycotted the Russian Olympics. It was a major international black eye.

Totally agree, Mr. Trump!

Nothing can break away from politics, however, politics shouldn't be everything. We don't agree with Chinese government, but our support to Olympics shouldn't be affacted by where it is hosted.

It is world platforms like the Olympics where I believe that the leader of a country - our country - needs to put away his hat as policitican and wear his hat of citizen supporter. The athletes from the US deserve the respect of our leader and his/her support. The Olympics has always been shadowed by political controversy - who knows, maybe it was also in ancient days - but every effort needs to be made to keep it about the athletes, about the one chance for our planet to come together in joy, hope and achievement.

Dear Mr. Trump,

I totally agree with you. These young people needs our positive energy focused on them. At least with the heart to be with them because, in sports they improve "the state of humanity" by conquering new boundaries, pushing the human limits, achieving new records ... as you do in business. They promote the excellence in sports and we like excellence, don't you?

In every day we have to strive to be better then yesterday. I think that this is the engine for success and personal true development.

Have a great weekend and
Enjoy the Olympics!

To Mr. Trump

I looked at the olympic symbol and was curious about the backgroud of it and this is what i found...

It contains five interlaced rings in the centre : blue, yellow, black, green and red. This design is symbolic ; it represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism

The words that stood out to me were, "world" and "united"...

I decided to look at the definition for "unity" and found :

1.The state or quality of being in accord; harmony.
2.The combination or arrangement of parts into a whole

The president represents the "people" he governs
He was there to support the athletes(the people)
He was there for political reasons(the people)

If the president boycotted, he would not be showing as an example, the goal for unity...

What do you think?

Has anyone recognised that this might be China's way of opening to the world. With the influx of people in their country, there will be an exchange of ideas, culture, values and the list goes on. Who knows what valuable lessons the Chineses would take away from these games? I live in the Caribbean and i do not support the Bush administration but only a real man could have done what Mr Bush did i.e put all differences aside for the benefit of the American athletes. Now that effort is more than commendable. He really put "COUNTRY ABOVE SELF". If i have a child and she behaves well because she is taught to doesn't she/he deserves to be rewarded for their good works/efforts? All these athletes who have been training (some for most of their life) are you suppose to say... u suffer because of the "POLITICS" How can they reach for their goals along with the "GOLD". What message would u be sending to them and those who are upcoming?

INTERESTING BLOG MR TRUMP AND WELL DONE TO THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT.

I really appreciate China even though they've faced natural disaster, but still stand firm to host the Olympic.

If my country, I think we have to burn candles in order to host Olympic because the electricity is cutting off at least once a day, no speakers. How will Billionaire Trump call such kind of Olympic? An Action Language Olympic?

President Bush took the right road. The Olympics should be a celebration of determination, strength, God given ability, courage, and excellence, not political agendas. The Olympics bring the whole world together in peace. While I don't agree with inhumanity anywhere, and like you, Mr. Trump, I believe there is a time a place to protest, and it isn't at the Olympics.

In hindsight, had we boycotted, just think what would have been lost. The sacrifice and effort put forth by those athletes should be honored.
