I grew up watching Ed McMahon on the Johnny Carson show and I watched him every night while I was at Wharton. I always thought he was terrific and that he brought a warm and very memorable quality to the Tonight Show.

When I heard what was happening to him and his house, I couldn’t believe it because I didn’t want to believe it. That shouldn’t be happening to him--but it was--so my first instinct was just to help him out.

My primary motivation in this situation is not a real estate deal--it’s a way to help a great American icon and a very nice man.

Since then, someone else got interested in buying the house. The only reason anybody other than me would be interested in this house is because I showed an interest in it first. If somebody else should buy it, I wish them good luck but I hope they take good care of Ed McMahon because he deserves it. I just heard that the person negotiating doesn’t have financing and the deal would be subject to getting financing, something which I, obviously, don’t need.

Let’s just hope Ed McMahon is taken care of in the best way possible. It’s the least we can do after what he’s given to us.

As an american we loved him. And as an American we pay tribute to a fallen Angel. Ed & Jonny they were a solid and unified team in contractual obligarions too. Think outside of the box and what was lost. A tribute.

Did a 3rd party enter discussions as a hinderance or an asset to broker a better deal?
Money can always be replaced. A structure of fairness.

well, it's good to helping peoples, especially someone who has well contributions in the past. but don't make it into a bad habit. if this became a habit, many people will turns into losers who always hoping somebody to help them (that's why we have white trash & black trash right ?).

it's good to help Ed, but we must encourage him to buy back his house in few years.

When I first heard about this story, I was so happy. There were many nights that I was babysitting, sitting there alone in the house waiting for the parents to comeback home- and there was Ed's Here's Johnny... to make the night seem brighter and a little less lonely. It was so much fun seeing Ed and Johnny clowning around- I would laugh like crazy.

Then as the media picked up this story and made a mini-circus of this thing- I felt bad for Ed. If there is anything worse than losing your home in foreclosure, it would be having every newspaper and blog in America writing about it. Now- with someone else negotiating- Ed may have lived through all this and still lose his house. We don't know if this other buyer wants to lease it back to Ed. He might be buying it because it's a good deal. He might be buying it to get the publicity for himself. He might be trying to jack up the offer to help Ed. He might just be trying to trump Trump. No one knows his/her motive.

Whatever happens, let's just pray for Ed. Let's pray that you come out on top- let's pray that Ed gets to keep his house.

Have you ever thought of trying to get Ed on the Celebrity Apprentice? With all the years he spent with Johnny, his cardex should make Piers' look anemic... I'd like to see that.

All the best.

I don't feel sorry for Ed McMahon. He made more money in a year than most of us make in a lifetime. Yet between failed marriages, bad investments and who knows what else his money is gone and he is losing his home. No one should have to face foreclosure but feeling sorry for a man who had millions and poorly managed them isn't one of the ones that I am going to be concerned about.

When I heard about you doing this on CNN it made me very proud of you. It's nice when an idol of mine does something to make me glad I like him...:-) You are tough as nails, but there's a heart way down deep in there, too. Good Karma for you!

Maybe Ed McMahon like a lot of Americans started to live above his means due to a variety of reasons. The cost to upkeep a home, the cost of living, adjusting mortgage arm products. I believe Mr. Trump that your association now with Mr. McMahon is an excellent opportunity for someone like yourself and possibly assure you of Mr. McMahon being able to pay his rent to create an online Housing Sweepstakes program. Everyone is looking for a "fix" to the housing crisis. Here's a new way to sell your house or for lenders to unload a foreclosed home. As an example, if a bank has a foreclosed home with a loan balance of $250,000. Why not enter this home into a sweepsteaks program. For a $100 entry fee the bank would only need 2500 entrys to payoff this debt, if there are more the sweepstakes company keeps the profits. Who better to put to work and advertise this than Ed himself. Imagine someone who lost their home, for a $100 can potentially own another home free and clear. This could be marketed to the very high end homes also. This could open up a whole new way to sell your own house even if it is not in foreclosure. This could not only be for this country but worldwide. I can't think of a better combination than Donald Trump and Ed McMahon to end the "housing crisis."

Give me a break Don. McMahon made milliions for over 30 years, and this man is broke, and doesn't even own his own house???

McMahon made a killing when gold prices went through the roof during the Carter administration.

Please send me the amount that he pays for one months rent, and I could buy a house and be

secure the rest of my life.

The real problem is the women he marries that bring nothing to the relationship, either assest wise

or monetaryly.

Don, do you realize when you die, your ex wifes will get more of your estate than your children.

How about this Don, buy me a house in your name, and I'll pay you the monthly payments untill the

house is paid off.

I need a house more than Ed McMahon.

Ed McMahon was great on Johnnie Carson and deserves a house. I mostly watched Steve Allen. That's why my mind is so twisted.

Speaking of homes, there is a new fundraiser, "Race for Homes." There should be a race of some sort every month: Scooter races, canoe races, an annual marathon and celebrities on tricycles. Prizes. This is all to fund Julie Caulfield's Country Estate. LOL Low-income housing is a cause. Everyone contact Julie Caulfield for the worthy endeavor. With your help, it will be a great estate, cause. By the way if you list the donation on your Income Taxes, you may want to move.

A very kind-hearted gesture truly lifted my spirits when I read about it. Good for you.

I read the words, "I don't feel sorry for Ed McMahon." It hurts anyone to lose a home. He can't help a failed marriage. It just happens. Anyone can get swindled. One sister-in-law of mine experienced fire. She will never forget the sight of her home burning to the ground. I believe her father was killed. People can be on top today and in a type of shelter tomorrow. It hurts to lose a home. I lost two nice apartments due to job losses, to leave for a type of shelter, knowing my pet was killed by uncaring family. His beak needed to periodically be clipped. They are like fingernails. I lost property in California to job loss, and I lost two luxury homes to slander, one only two weeks ago. After working 24/7 on projects for almost 4 years to have a home and cushy job, it hurt like hell to lose it. Losing your home makes you mad, fighting mad. Roommates help themselves to your possession and sometimes money. I still want a private home, a place where I can invite friends for barbeques and the master of the house will yell, "Ping pong." I feel sorry for Ed McMahon. I know how he feels.

This is a perfect example of where the real estate market today does not have to be about win/lose. It truly can be a win/win if it is handled correctly. In today's market with the foreclosures etc. so many people have to make a tough decision. I applaud Mr. Trump for his understanding of Mr. McMahon's situation and the real compassion while still making a good business deal.

Not knocking here but, banks and other lending institutions should pay attention and think just a little out of the box in their own portfolios. They could come out heros in the long run and be financially secure too while being part of the solution.

Thank you for a great lesson! I thank Mr. Trump for providing the example without a lot of fanfare and Mr. McMahon for being gracious allowing this to be public. Best of luck to you Mr. McMahon and Mr. Trump in all you do!

Mr. Trump,

I am a little bit to young to remeber Ed McMahon but I think that it is alsome that you would go so far to help out a friend in need. I would also like to thank you for all of your support of our military troops. I was wondering if you would be willing to fly all the way out to Okinawa Japan, to talk at the next Hospital Corps birthday ball June 13-15 2009?

Very Respectfully,

Mr. Trump, I greatly applaud your efforts to help an American icon. I hope this effort works out better for you than my attempt to help a friend in need did for me. Recently, a good friend of mine told me that the untimely death of her son effectively resulted in the lost of half her income and she was at risk of losing her own home. I attempted to organize a benefit concert to raise the funds to save my friend's home, only to find that though my heart was in the right place, the location and timing were wrong. There simply wasn't a market for a live performance here, nor were people as willing to help a person in need. I ended up having to cancel the concert. It seems to me that we are part of a dying breed of people with the heart and courage to help a friend despite personal risks. Again, I hope your efforts turn out better than mine.

Your courage to demonstrate the "attitude of helping someone in need" is a good example that others, including non-profits should follow. Needy people, are not always poor, many are well educated, and some are celebrities, such as Ed McMahon. To justify unsympathetic feelings towards a person based on his income in the past is moronic. Donald Trump experienced financial hardships that are well-documented.

What if bankers, investors, friends, family and the public didn't help him in his time of need?

I don't think any of us would be posting comments to the Trump Blog today.

"Here's Donald," a great humanitarian and leader.

Your interest in Ed McMahon's property is a "free publicity plug" that keeps your name and what you do in the eyes of the media, other investors, and people who follow your exciting career. This is brilliant. I don't understand why "new real estate investors" don't use this approach to gain media attention, and build their reputation for investing in high-end property, homes of legends, or famous historical buildings. Helping out the seller is icing on the cake. As in any wise business decision, the question is "how can this benefit me, my shareholders or my friendly investors?" Real Estate deals are usually about profit. This is what you built your reputation on. The fact that you are compassionate and generous adds to your admirable reputation.

Donald,

A true act of random kindness. Shame on the nay sayers and God forbid they should ever hit a slippery slope. Yes Ed has made fortunes and apparently lost them for whatever reason. Hopefully, he has accepted your generosity and fired his money managers.

Making it a great day!

People like Ed are artists. Most artists are very creative and some of them catch and keep our attention. Ed is one of those persons. I was the CEO of public corporation in Saint Paul, Minnesota that owned a factory with extra space that we leased out to artists. Most were lovable but many of the most lovable failed to come up with the rent money most months. Soon after taking over the company I simply let the artists live in the building until the major kicked them out. The parties were wonderful so they indeed gave to our business friends that attended many good times, art of determinable value, and lots of laughs. Someone that cannot understand the wonderful yet sometimes eccentric behavior of our fellow beings does not understand what kind of personality it takes to do well in business. I gave then then and continued to do it but one must keep such giving in perspective.

Your capacity to care is a greater attribute than having the biggest brain in the universe or all the money in the world. Being wise in offereing help, but not enabling or rescueing people lifts them up and restores dignity. Regardless of what he had in the past, or how he mishandled it, he needed help. He is human, and like all of us - not quite perfect. Your act of kindness and grace shows greatness of spirit. That is the kind of legacy that lives on.
