John Edwards: Another Politician, Another Scandal

Another politician, another scandal. Former presidential candidate John Edwards admitted he had an affair several years ago - a relationship he vehemently denied when he was campaigning. There are, of course, all sorts of issues here.

Some people question whether a candidate’s personal life really matters. They think what he does in his personal life doesn’t affect his ability to lead. Still others question whether the media pursued this story as diligently as they should have.

But you can also look at it from a business viewpoint. What happens when one of an organization’s most visible members is caught up in a situation that threatens the stability of the institution as a whole? How those circumstances are handled could signal the demise or the continued health of the organization.

In this case, we’re talking the Democratic Party. Even though John Edwards isn’t a presidential candidate, like it or not, the party will suffer by association. His name had been mentioned as a vice-presidential candidate. The American people are a forgiving lot, but a very remorseful Edwards would have to do a lot of public atoning very quickly for that to happen.

More importantly, the Democrats have to do damage control. Like any business in a tough spot, they’ll have to figure out a way to make the spotlight’s glare not so harsh. The party had some serious momentum and this was one quick slamming-on of the brakes.

Smart managers would find a way to diffuse the situation somehow and that’s what the Democrats have to do if they want to survive unscathed.

Those are some valid concerns. And we agree in part.

Leaders need to let go of the past. A leader, as in business, need to be tough diplomats. To forgive, but apply the lessons learned. Stains can be removed.

Independents need help, support and wisdom with allies. Why him?

Your personal life doesn't mean a thing if you are honest. McCain dumped an invalid wife who had stood by him while he was a POW for a wealthy woman much younger than him and it didn't hurt him a bit. But he has never flinched in saying it was a rotten thing to do but when he got home he and his wife were different people- and we all knew someone who had been through less in Viet Nam had discovered the same thing. He's human- he admits it.

Bill Clinton lied about Monica Lewinsky- no one would have cared if he hadn't lied- but it lead to his impeachment. Hillary stood by his side- which I believe was a mistake on her part. I think that if she had dumped him big time and went on about her career, then Obama would not have had a chance. Bill was an embarrassment to her campaign. I think that there are a lot of women who would see a divorced Hillary becoming president as a way to show all men that if they cheat- we can stand alone- and do anything- even become President of the United States.

Edwards lied big time to the American people- as well as acting like a louse. In these days, there is no truth that cannot be uncovered if the press cares enough. Let's just hope that he came clean and there are no more lies or hypocrisy waiting to be revealed.

I personally do not think that it will hurt the Democrats- given John McCain's history- as long as they distance themselves from him and leave him to clean up his own mess. Obama is running on values and it is important to keep his values in the forefront- rather than give any undue attention to the lack of values of former candidates.

Last night tells a story. Michelle Obama gets up in front of the DNC and proves that she and her husband are the culmination of the American Dream that the Kennedy's and Martin Luther King died to bring to this country. McCain gets on TV and says that he doesn't own 10 homes- his wife does- then shoots out yet another negative campaign ad based on what he manufactures as an attack on his wife. Have very little respect for the negative campaign ads and the hiding behind his wife's wealth. If your wife is rich- you are rich- no ifs, ands, buts or maybes. Have a lot of respect for the Obamas. If McCain wants to win, he needs to run on the issues- not on attacks against the Obamas- even if he IS neck and neck in the polls.

I believe in loyalty in marriage and in business. If you are not happy with either you should get out instead of lieing or cheating. If you can not be loyal to your wife, you can not lead our country, never mind a business. I lost my respect for Bill Clinton & John Edwards but I do believe that Obamas leadership will overcome John Edwards black eye he gave to the Democratic Party. Great post Mr. Trump!

I think that Trump is a marketing genius. Politics is the buzzword of the RSS feed world right now. Anyone who blogs about politicians or parties will get lots of traffic and hits, but hopefully not hit in traffic. The successful businessman is the ultimate politician. I vote for Trump and the capitalistic party!

I don't understand why all this hypocrisy is affecting our country.
Mr.Trump has got married more than once.
Who can be so childish to believe that his private life has been all roses?
People divorce when they have problems, not when they are happy.
Has anybody ever noticed? Stop this madness.

I agree though on the managment side, you can have a nice change, or difficult changes and that depends on the managment of the situation and the woman you have in front of course.

Ancient kings used to have even more than one wife, and they were excellent leaders.
Why all this hipocrisy on human nature?

In all arena of politics the good is never the on the spotlight. Negative things are always highlighted. Hey if everyone was St peter it is not the world it is already Heaven then.

I am too with faults of my own yet it does not make it impossible for me to be able to be an effective and efficient person.

As for my own country Malaysia politics is quite unstable, but I feel sad that scandals are more thought about than the solving of economical issues. I am not so into politics the back stabbers and wolves in sheeps clothing are rampant everywhere.

I hold a simple principle that when crises really do occur real leaders rise. Whether the person used to be a sleazy guy or slut matters not. People change as they mature. I am a tutor and many teachers tell me and warn me of bad students and failures in class.

Hah hah opportunity. I seek help from hyperactive students. And when their efforts are recognised they will decide to remain calm since these attention seekers have got the attention they have sought. As for those claimed as renegades I like to take their opinion and work out creative ways of problem solving with them. The slow and unresponsive well are actually sponges who absorb in my classes.

It may sound weird me telling about the potential in these seemingly slow and rebellious students. But as I am a natural leader in many quirky emergencies I hope others who hold leadership posts or managerial posts have one thing in mind peopla can give you biased opinions about anybody sometimes out of personal vendetta and manipulative reasons, I just nod and nod but still give the person a shot. Once I really see and try to empathise with the person I pick up the positive traits and work things out the best way possible. But this requires patience and tolerance. With this Y generation of fast movement and delivery in everything we seem to forget Patience is a big virtue.

I laugh aloud looking at silly people cover up their dirt by putting dirt on others, apparently soon people around shall realise one who likes slandering will not spare anyone from his bad mouthing and rumour mongering.

I hope political scandals were not the big issue in any country. Only then will econimical downturns slowly heal as for the World News is not covering only deppressive and negative stories, but rather would focus on positive efforts of all politicians the world over. Then unity and cooperation can exist and petty election scandals can go off the minds of the public and make them more focused in wealth generation rather than Power craze!

"Another cheater bites the dust." He's not the first and he won't be the last. I can think of better scandals than this to talk about. Afterall, politicians are well known for "thinking outside the box" using something else besides their brain. And they're not alone. Athletes, business people, even priests have walked this embarrassing path. There is a lot more to the character of a person than what goes on between the sheets. A brilliant mind is a treasure. Let's not forget that. Our former President,John
F. Kennedy may have played around with Marilyn Monroe, but even a Hollywood legend couln't keep him from taking care of business and winning the election. When he died, thousands of people cried,
including his wife. Standing by your man, is more noble than creating a messy scene and hurting your family, friends and supporters. I think Hillary Clinton made the right decision... "for better or worse." And I don't think Mr. Trump needs to justify his decision to marry more than one woman.
His ex-wives don't look like they spend a lot of time crying over it. In fact, they seem to be pretty happy with their life. His children admire and respect him and they set a good example for others whose parents decided to divorce. He is loved by many, and that is more important than gossip.

Sorry, I have to disagree as to "atonement" from the Democratic party. I have been an avid political watcher and participant since the 80 race between Reagan and Carter. The number one thing that I have found in all the years of watching is that the general public is kept blind.

Those who control the information (good, bad or educational) hold the power to control the masses. Never have I seen a backlash to the Democratic party. NEVER! (well the Gingrich contract with America was a slight revolt). Even with Congressional Approval below 16% and with them in control of Congress, you will STILL see them pick up seats this year AND take the white house.

I apologize up front for this, but the general public is stupid, controlled and does not take the time to educate themselves on what really happens or the consequences of their actions. Just watch FOX.

The people that read your blog, other blogs, listen to multiple streams of information are in the minority in this country. And that is the way the DNC and ALL those with power want it. They fear the truth.

God Bless America because we need his help.

Bill

Ahh Politics. Anyone who participates lives under the microscope, and since there are no perfect people (although some are pretty close) there is almost always some fire to put out. You are right Mr. Trump, competent public relations should be able to quickly acknowledge the situation then help the media and the public to move on. Of course, ideally, they would have operated under some of Peter Drucker's teachings and had their crisis management and avoidance plans already in place. The best way to handle the situation is to divert it before it occurs right?
