Presidential List

I read an article recently that made a lot of sense to me. Doris Kearns Goodwin is a Pulitzer Prize winner for her books on history, and she made a list of ten points that are important for a President to consider and to emulate if they hoped to be great. She has written books about Abraham Lincoln and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and she believes leadership strengths should be considered carefully before voting. Here are some of the attributes that she feels make for a great leader--and I agree!

1. The courage to stay strong.

This means a President needs to be able to withstand adversity. Lincoln is a terrific example, as he dealt with poverty and polio and was able to lead this country at a tremendously difficult time in history.

2. Self-confidence

Lincoln surrounded himself with people of differing perspectives who would disagree with him and say so. Self confidence doesn’t require yes men and women as advisors.

3. An ability to learn from errors

The first step is to acknowledge an error and the second is to effectively move forward. Both Lincoln and FDR were able to do this. When FDR’s program didn’t work as he had planned, he created a new one in its place, learning from the mistakes he’d made.

4. A willingness to change

FDR incurred the wrath of industrials during his New Deal, but when war came, he made peace with them, knowing their commitment was necessary for a victory.

5. Emotional intelligence

Both Lincoln and FDR shared credit for successes, and FDR had a gift of making others feel confident they could do their best.

6. Self control

Leaders can manage their emotions and remain objective and productive in times of calamity. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, FDR remained calm, absorbing the news while deciding what to do. Lincoln had the habit of writing a ‘hot letter’ when he was angry, putting it aside, and never sending it.

7. A popular touch

The best Presidents appear to have an intuitive sense of what the public wants or needs to hear. FDR held his ‘fireside chats’ but only when he felt the timing was right.

8. A moral compass

Lincoln was warned that if he didn’t renounce emancipation, he would have no chance of re-election. He said, “I should be damned in time and in eternity” if he chose to turn his back on the slaves to whom he had pledged freedom. He turned his party’s leaders away and the rest is history.

9. A capacity to relax

Both FDR and Lincoln knew the importance of laughter. Lincoln had a good sense of humor and told long tales, and FDR had an evening cocktail hour at the White House with two rules: Politics and war could not be discussed.

10. A gift for inspiring others

FDR’s first inaugural address was at the height of the Depression, yet his deep confidence in his country gave new hope to millions of people. His communication skills were remarkable, as were Lincoln’s. They both shared a love and knowledge of poetry and drama, and used that knowledge effectively. They knew how to educate the public while inspiring them.

Dear Mr Trump
Today was the best day of my life!!!!! I'm a single mother of four children Two of them are handicap, and I never believed that I would ever be able to buy a house of our own. Well today Sept 22, 2008 that all changed I bought our very first home.. I feel like a child that has very special candy in the school yard. I'm shaking like a leaf but I know it's from being very happy and excited at the prospect of never having another landlord ever again. Mr Trump I know I owe some of this to you, because it was your books that helped me realize that if you want it keep after it, It will be your one day. Here I am a home owner. Scared like you would not believe but happy our lifesaving gone but happy.. Thank you! Thank you for everything. Now I have to go and sit and cry for a while it's what we women do when we are too happy... ;} Sorry if there are any mistakes in this letter I can barely write it never mind proof read it..lol

If those competencies were applied to Brazilian politicians, we would not have a single election since the military regimen.

A great leader is measured by different attributes across a wide spectrum of people. In the context of South Afrcia, you would find a view expressed by a working class person of who she/he regards as a leader and the weight given to the measure used. However, an intellectual would attach different attributes to a leader. If you were to approach a entrepeneur for a definition or traits which a good leader should display then too you get a different response. A good leader is not always one who is wealthy and boasts the evidence of material gain, but one who is able to ensure that his people are taken care of. I say this not intending that people should receive hand-outs, but that an education be extended to all to allow them an opportunity to create their own wealth in keeping with their needs and aspirations. I admire a leader who despite having attained wealth is able to empathise with the plight of those less fortunate and empowers them to achieve greater things in life, including an enhaced sense of spirituality, which all too often falls along the way-side.

Dear Mr. Trump,

I think your "Presidential List" should be translated and read by the next prime minister of Japan!
By the way, your book "Think Big and Kick Ass in Business and Life" impressed me a lot. Thank you so much for your wonderful messages in the book. Please have a lecture for Japanese audience if you ever visit Japan next time.

Dear Mr. Trumph,

You might not even know where I come from, but you have been my inspiration from the time i started watching your show"The Apprentice". I really appreciate your outright forwardness and your taking of huge risk. Recently, I was lucky to come across one of your book titled"Think Big and Kick ass". I have somehow lost my aims in my life and was wandering helplessly, wherever my life took it. But then i completed first part of your book, where I came across your quote" If your thinking already, you might as well think big. It is your choice. No other circumstances will stop you from thinking big" and lately i have been thinking a lot, what i should be doing. Anyway, you did inspired me to start thinking big and i will let you know if it ever gets through.

IMHO, neither US candidate has all of these.
Obama has courage, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, a popular touch, a capacity to relax, and an amazing gift of inspiring others.
McCain had courage, self-confidence, self-control, and the a capacity to relax.
Obama seems to have less of a capacity to relax- but McCain tells the same jokes a million times so his capacity to relax may be faked.
Neither has shown the ability to change- despite being candidates for change and while both of these had moral compasses prior to the election, they both threw them out of the window for the sake of the campaign.
We need a great president now but it does not look like we will have one in the next four years. The American people need to look potential candidates in the eye and see which has the capacity to lead BEFORE we nominate them. IMHO Hillary had many of these qualities and it is a great loss that we will not have her in the White House.

Hi Donald

Men will be men and as an avid Bush supporter and a loathing for his opponent at the last election run. Even prior to Bush, the ‘cigar man’ had his strengths . . . . (and weaknesses)

Not being American and caught-up in a country heading for a tumble, I have always followed and trusted in the choices made by the US leaders. When those choices seemed a little harsh at times they always paid off in the long run.

Personally don't get a grand sense of security by the current Presidential List. I stated a while ago that the American folks don't willingly give their leaders the desired support. I hope I am wrong.

Just a question to everyone there," Do they really know what goes on outside the US and how difficult the choices are?" Stand by your leaders USA

Donald Trump, you encourage, motivate and inspire. I love your blog.

A true leader has vision, knows their deficiences and acknowledges them; but is not mastered by them. A leader moves forward with passion, believing his or her way is the "right way" and doesn't ask someone else to do something they would not do themself. A true leader understands the people they are leading and works tirelessly to achieve the goals that are beneficial to the good of all. They show wisdom, compassion, laughter and learning in their manner and speech. They uphold justice and protect the young. When they die, their record stands for how well they achieved their goals.

You are that kind of Leader.

I think President Bush is also a good example. I like the way he solve the fuel problem with King Abdulah.

I pray all countries around the world are blessed with the leader that think about the poor in actions and hearts.

All countries are like women, if a woman marry a wrong husband, they surely will face a lot of troubles even can kill their own wives. The woman has to choose only one husband like the country has to choose only one president. Good husband will bring prosperity to the family like good leader brings prosperity to the country.

DEAR MR. TRUMP:
There is a travesty brewing in Hamton Roads, V.A.
Being the most repected real estate developers in America, I for one would love your opinion, on Fort Monroe.
The Department of Defense released a list on 13, May 2005, of military installations recommended for CLOSURE. Among them is Fort Monroe. The list was approved by George W. Bush on 15, September 2005 and submitted to Congress to act within forty five legislative days to disaprove the list in it's entirety, and the BRAC recommendations became law. Installations on the list must close within six years.
There are several groups competing for the site. The Fort area is prime developmental property.
Some of the proposals are from men who can afford to buy countries.
The Historic Chamberlin Hotel has already been sold to developers. The CASEMATE MUSEUM is the only Fort left in th USA surrounded by a MOAT. With special emphasis on the Cival War; it was the only Confederate Fort taken over by Union soldiers. It offers a view of CONFEDERATE PRESIDENT, JEFFERSON DAVIS' prison cell. Also shown are the quarters occupied by ROBERT E. LEE, AND THE QUARTERS where PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN was a guest in MAY 1862. EDGAR ALLEN POE served for a year at FORT MONROE, most people do not know that. GENERAL GRANT walked the grounds of FORT MONROE as well. I wish someone would buy it and keep it a land-mark for the American people. I call our probable loss a travesty.
Mr. Trump what are your view points on this situation? Please comment. My blog need not appear, I would just love to hear your opinion. THIS IS ONE MILITARY INSTALLATION I DO NOT WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO JUST AUCTION OFF AS IF IT WERE A MERE YARD SALE.
FOR DONALD TRUMP'S EYES ONLY.
I GET SIDE TRACKED WITH CONVICTIONS BUT I HAVE A PAPER TO GET OUT TO A MAN WITH THE INITIALS, D.J.T.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE
TERESA

Mr. Trump,
I think other great leaders have those qualities too, but I think Presidents and leaders of any cause have the flexibility to be what is required at the moment, and I think that relates back to a broader definition than "A popular touch" The word I would use is vision.

While you have many of these qualities, I think you are wise to direct your energy and focus as you do. Your contribution to business development and the economy can be monumental in a way no other can even approach, and how fulfilling is that? Doing what you love and helping others build character and businesses, creating beauty, and leaving legacies.
