A big part of being successful is performance. We all know about preparation, doing your homework or groundwork, covering our bases and so on, but it all boils down to the bottom line. Sometimes there is only one winner.

I’ve been lucky enough to watch quite a bit of the U.S. Open this year. I love to watch these champions go at it. I was there to watch the match between Serena and Venus Williams, and when I left I was thinking about what fighters they are. Both of them are great athletes, and to see them battle it out left quite an impression. They were very equally matched--which made for an exciting time for their fans--but Serena was just a bit tougher. Her determination was incredible. It’s not a big surprise that she won the U.S. Open title last night.

Some things are team sports. Tennis isn’t. There is one winner, and it’s a bit like combat if you think about it. It’s also not a group effort. Those champions are out there and using everything they’ve got to avoid defeat and to win. They take sole responsibility for the outcome. It’s a great lesson just to watch them.

I have often said that being an entrepreneur is not a group effort. The first thing an aspiring entrepreneur must realize is that he or she will be going at it alone. You may have a lot of friends and family who will cheer you on, or maybe not, but when you go out there in the center court of the world, you will be going at it alone to make your mark. That excites some people, and it deflates others. Make sure you know what kind of person you are at your core level before you enter that arena. It will save you a lot of time and effort.

Fortunately, in the business world there is room for more than one winner. Venus and Serena are both winners in my book. Just don’t underestimate the stamina and determination you will need to succeed.

It's like selling a product or a service. You give your customer everything you got to convince them that your product or service is the best. (You give, they take) In sports you do the same thing, you give your opponent everything you got. If you give more than your opponent...you win!

There is always a giver and a taker.

Giving is great...you see why!

We always look at a different view point. Too many want the ball and fumble at the kick-off.
" True endurance starts when you are in competition with yourself first. "

Are you a team leader or an independent leader? Maybe it's a combination of those two factors.
Competition starts with-in all of us first. And grasp the concept of a team play or a power play as independents.

To win the gold.

Mr Trump,

Winning on home soil is a lot easier than winning on foreign ground.
There are a lot of things to consider besides winning the match.
Supporters, match temprement, weather, climate, court condition, self confidence, support from the crowd/ audience are very crucial factors that play an important role when playing on foreign ground.
The truth is, if you're not prepared and ready for the match, you can't win, unless your opponent is worse off compared to you. The truth is, the battle is all three factors combined emotional, psychological and also physical.

You are correct being an entrepreneur is not a group effort. It is one of the best tests of an individual effort. If you are one of those people that is "wired up" to be an entrepreneur, creating your own business will make more of you than you could ever achieve working for someone else.

Dear Mr. Trump,

I'll never forget what you once taught... "business is war... the successful operate themselves competently under pressure." I wasn't surprised when you said that entrepreneurship isn't for everyone...

The higher you reach in business, the more resistance you'll eventually encounter... it makes sense. I've also seen the bigger you are in the marketplace, the greater the stakes are, and people will fight hard to maintain that position.

If you do, what you've always done, then you will get, what you've always gotten. I believe at it's heart, it's a business philosophy, that eventually generates extraordinary results... I see it in extraordinary individual, whether in business or some other area of life. I've heard it's sometimes unconscious even, in some of these individuals, but over time, they've definitely developed a strategy that takes hold. Take someone like entrepreneur Richard Branson, whom, judging by the way he talks, doesn't always know what he should and yet, through some mysterious channel, consistently manages remarkable results.

Sincerely,

Mr. D. Leung

Tennis is a great sport that teaches many lessons. It builds confidence, endurance, strength, and timing. Tennis tests the emotional maturity of players when winning isn't always possible.( Everybody loves a winner, but nobody wins every game every time a game is played.) Throwing a tennis racket, or swearing at the judges is great for the media and exciting for the fans even if it is considered "unsportsman-like conduct." It keeps things from getting too British.
I have watched many great tennis players. Each has a unique way of satisfying their fans. Eventually, great tennis players become public personalities.Do they only love what they do? Or do they crave the attention they get ?

What do they do after they can no longer compete?

Winning is great, but a solid education is better. It teaches you what to do in times when losing is inevitable. Playing games professionally can be very short-lived. What do you do when the game is over?

Mr. Trump
Your statement "The first thing an aspiring entrepreneur must realize is that he or she will be going at it alone." is very true but very subtle at the same time. It is much deeper and harsher than that.
Many of us would be rich if it were just like a tennis game where the rules are strict and the opponent has no chance of cheating. Where i come from(Goa, India) starting any venture comes with many challenges.
Unlike in the US, you need a license every step of the way and you have to pay a hefty bribe and/or use political influence to get your job done in government offices. It takes about 5 months just to get a trade license. I can go on about the situation here but in few words all i can say is, If you are a middle class citizen in India and you need to start a business, you need to sell your sole and leave all your honestly and righteous values at home while leaving for work".
Its because of people like you who inspire me never to give up.
Thank you very much
Avi

I love tennis (and golf), it's not so much what I learn about my opponent, but what the competition forces me to learn about myself that I find most challenging!

Several years ago, I had the honor to sit beside a participant of the Miss America Pageant. She was the guest speaker for the evening, in her home state, and had successfully placed. Prior to that meeting, I had always felt that seeking that recognition was somewhat vain and shallow, and I preferred to be valued for my ability and contributions rather than appreciated for appearance. She opened my eyes. Even in individual endeavors, and even if you don't place, you can still be a winner. How? By learning more about yourself in the process, by always doing your best. As long as you are growing towards your dreams and becoming more, you are winning. The only loser is the one who fails to pick himself back up after he stumbles. Who gives up, or who denies accountability.

This remarkable young woman ran without placing twice before making it. It was a stretching experience. She learned and grew from those experiences. I would say that was being a success. I don't feel the measuring of yourself to others is as telling as the measuring of yourself to yourself. We each have our own unique package of gifts and abilities. Some have a bigger package, and a more monumental task. So, are we maximizing them and doing our own personal best? Nobody else can do that which you were meant to do.
