Jones Beach on Long Island has been an important part of many New Yorker’s lives since childhood, including mine. When my venture, to be called Trump on the Ocean, was announced in the spring of 2007, it was met with opposition as well as support. Some people saw it as historic preservation, other people saw it as a blight on the landscape. Whenever I do anything, the scrutiny can border on the ridiculous, but I refuse to give up.
Just last Friday it was announced that I’d won a big victory, and here’s the press release:
DONALD TRUMP WINS HUGE VICTORY AGAINST NEW YORK STATE
After months of legal battling, the long awaited decision on the proposal to build Trump on the Ocean was reached in favor of Donald Trump. Every point in contention was vindicated by the Court’s ruling.
Among the issues in dispute by objectors was Mr. Trump’s right to build a catering and restaurant facility which includes a basement. State Supreme Court Justice Ira Warshawsky said the review board “lacked a rational basis” to conclude that a basement consisting of offices and kitchens could be a public safety hazard. The design criteria utilized, as in all Trump buildings, meets and exceeds all Health, Safety and Security concerns of the public as well as their employees.
The Court also recognized that the objective of the new Jones Beach Boardwalk facility is to “cause capital from a private enterprise to be used to create an opportunity for public recreation, to also engage in historic preservation...and to provide revenue for the State, to be plowed back into the park to increase opportunity for public recreation...a sound financial model.”
Mr. Trump looks forward to providing a new and exciting venue to the beloved Jones Beach State Park and also to receiving the millions of dollars that is owed to him due to the State’s irresponsible behavior.
“Trump on the Ocean will withstand the test of time and serve as a testament to one of Robert Moses’ greatest achievements,” said Mr. Trump.
It was a great feeling to have won, especially after the long legal battles we went through. For those of you not familiar with New York history, Robert Moses was an important figure as a developer in New York and between 1924 and 1964 he led the largest creation of public works in U.S. history. His contributions were tremendous, and he is a great example of how tenacity can turn problems into victories. Be the same--know there’s a solution, and stick with it. See you at the beach.
