I Know It's Not Easy Out There

A few months ago, a citizen in Canada sent me a copy of her local newspaper from Kamloops, British Columbia. There was a photograph of a homeless man who was surrounded by his belongings, and he was reading a copy of my first book, The Art of the Deal, which came out in 1987. The reporter who saw him spoke to him, and a photograph was taken.

I was very taken with the story and photo and decided to send the man a check for $1,000.00 via the reporter from the Kamloops newspaper.  I was impressed that, despite his situation, he was reading a book that might inspire him to better his situation. Reading The Art of the Deal had worked for Mark Burnett years ago when he was selling tee shirts on the beach, as well as for Robert and Kim Kiyosaki after the 1987 stock market crash, and I was hoping it might help this man in some way. But I also wanted to help him with his immediate situation.

The homeless man had been told that I’d read the initial story, and had joked about it, asking if “the cheque’s in the mail” not knowing or believing I’d be sending one. My check was then delivered to him, and when he was handed the check, he said, “For once in my life, I’m speechless. I’m at a total loss for words. Usually I’m so loquacious, but this? I don’t know what to say.” What I had to say to him was, “Give him my regards and tell him to work hard. I know it’s not easy out there.”

A subsequent article in the Kamloops paper featured an interview with me, asking me why I did this. I said, “The guy seemed to me to be trying so hard.  He really seemed to be trying to figure out life. You know, you work hard and it’s not easy sometimes.” One columnist mentioned that I probably gave tips bigger than that for a shoeshine, and then realized that the “gift of a hand up is better than a handout” - which is precisely right.

Bravo for the homeless man reading your book, The Art of the Deal. It is an excellent book and I think all politicians should read it! It gave me a whole new insight and respect for you. Recently, I bought several of your books at a garage sale for a quarter each! What a bargain! I just finished reading Staying on Top last night. The situations you describe in your books about dealing with the incompetence of local government (like the New York skating rink fiasco that went on for years and wasted millions of dollars of tax payer money and how you got it done in a few months, on time and under budget) developing properties and all the bureaucratic hurdles you have dealt with just amazes me! I live in Bellingham, Washington and after 7 years of the City, the Port, the community, endless studies and millions of dollars later, there seems to be little progress in developing 110 acres of waterfront property that was donated by Georgia Pacific. I wish that YOU were developing this property because it would be done by now and it would be SPECTACULAR!-Merilee Erchinger, Bellingham, WA

Its amazing how many people do not understand the old saying

Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.
Feed a man fish and he will eat a meal

Yes Sir it's hard out there! But that just goes to show you, God is always watching! Another example of a man not letting his current situation be his destination led him to being on Mr. Donald Trumps blog. What are the chances of that...Keep being the tenacious leader you are Sir! Thanks again for fueling my drive in knowing you are the real deal other than money! I am glad to have read this story during one of the worst times in our economy. Thanksgiving is Giving!

What an amazing gentle man. I always appreciate and respect the desire you have for the community out there. I did not know, your helping hand can cross borders to an individual in the street for that matter. May God bless you the more and may you cosntruct more skyscripers because now i know that your riches are not for biogotry. By the way here in Namibia the apprentice is no longer being televised any idea on how to get the copies. Or a download if possible please.

I can picture myself as that homeless man with my paintings that took several years to create surrounding me. I have most of the books you wrote, and several from Trump University to keep me company on a cold, windy day. A journalist approaches me, and we talk. I tell her I am homeless, not for lack of trying to better myself, but because I never fully understood "the art of making money." She takes a photo of me and sends it to you. Filled with compassion, you send a check for $1,000.00.
I am surprised because I never expected a man like you would be concerned about me. Now what?

It hurts to think how many people in the community walked by this homeless person and didn't offer the comfort of a clean bed in their home, decent food to eat, and a job that pays enough money to adequately support a modest lifestyle.

And now, it hurts me more to know that I am one of those people who gave money to beggers on the streets in New York City. It made me feel good at the moment, but your story made me realize that I really didn't do enough to make a difference in their life.

Thank you for opening my eyes, and letting me see that it is far more generous to get involved in the process of change than to offer too little money and hope for a change that may not happen.

I have addressed the subject of homelessness in a few of my paintings. Now I will offer them to a charity that is dedicated to relieving this miserable disease called "poverty." If it helps to raise public awareness, then my contribution did more than help one individual.

Again, thank you. Your generousity keeps the Spirit of Giving (unselfishly) alive and well.

A hand up is much better, but when we are talking about survival needs and safety needs, sometimes we have to make exceptions. I always say never do something for someone that he can and should do for himself - but many people have never been brought up to process or prepare for the unexpected. I would like to challenge everyone to investigate in your own community. Do you have a food pantry? Is it well stocked or can you organize a food drive? Do you have a local soup kitchen that provides a hot meal? Is it well staffed with volunteers or can you recruit your friends? Do you have a local homeless shelter and a Domestic Assault Shelter? If so, how many beds do they have and are they filled to capacity? Do they provide support services and programs? For example, in our community, we have a Neighborhood program that rents apartments and homes to people who were first in the homeless shelter. They sign a contract and agree to participate in this program that teaches them to budget, care for their home, and eventually to be able to own their own homes. Do you have a Salvation Army, GoodWill, or a free shop where someone can be clothed? Do you have medical services to address physical and mental health for these individuals? Do any of these organizations have wish lists? What are the statistics for these conditions in your community? When I did this, what absolutely amazed me was the number of youth, attending public high school that are homeless. If each of us takes the time to answer these questions and collect the wish lists and distribute this information to our spheres of influence, we should all be able to impact the quality of life in our communities positively. We are each either part of the problem or part of the solution.

So, if there is no homeless shelter in your community, here is another real estate opportunity. Do you have a property or facility that could be adapted, developed or renovated?

Dear Sir. My name is Sal I'm 49 yrs old and for many yrs I thought i was invincible, i went from job to job and learned the trade only to better my self and take care of my family. Just last September I watched my business start taking a dive, I tried everything to stay afloat but the problem was on the other side. Our contracts where shutting down or bailing out and save there accounts. I did the same several months later. I did what every household head would do, seek a job. My grand dad told me years ago, learn all trade and put them aside one day you might need them. Well with all the job applications i submitted with resume i got nowhere. Several told me i was overqualified an or a job threat . Most / ALL jobs today ask for a degree, well I'm going to try again, with bills piling up and the economy the way It Is, as soon as I land a job I am enrolling my self in to a corse for business management and getting a degree that may open more doors for me in the future. I never knew how hard It was till now. And for sure IT'S NOT EASY OUT THERE . So listen to my grand dad learn all you can and get a degree it helps. Thanks Sal G.

I think it comes down to never giving up. If you made it once, you've gained knowledge to make it again. If you've lost it and gained it back, you have even more knowledge. This life is always about adapting to what gets thrown at you. The only way to truly lose is to lay back and accept defeat.
[-] Posted by member1746772 on 11/30/2008 1:52 AM
I forgot to mention that EVEN if one has been defeated, or given up for a time, because it's just gotten to be too much deal with at the time, does not mean you are done. There are always rematches aren't there? ;) Get back up when you are ready, and get back out there again. It doesn't always have to be the next second. Sometimes we need time to heal first.

Mr. Trump thank you for this post. Education is one of the major components to stepping out of homelessness and back into society. Nov. 16-21 is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week which makes your post all the more timely. Especially with today's economic climate.

One of the things I do is to volunteer on the City of Mesa Human Services Board. Last month we had a very inspiring presentation from The Open Table (http://www.theopentable.org/about.htm) I say this because it is very much in line with what Mr. Trump stated here. It is an interesting concept because it gives people who willing to work their way out of homelessness and an opportunity to become productive citizens. With a team that guides the individual and customized plan created for that person's unique set of issues. It really is groundbreaking. I am happy that the City of Mesa as well as other Cities in Arizona, Phoenix and Tempe are embracing this new system. It started in a church in Paradise Valley, AZ. I am sure Mr. Trump is familiar with the area. I only mention it because though a check is wonderful, having a team to help the homeless person/family overcome the challanges that keep them perpetually homeless is even better. Thanks!

I'm dumbfounded to have to comment on this, knowing that this happens to everyone.

Most of the time, we just have to hang in there and hope for the best.

In the end we are the masters of our own destiny. What we do today, will someday effect us, in a way which we can never know.... and, only if we take time to put in consistent effort, we will know that one day, what we aspire will come true.

After all, life is just a journey of lessons and realizations. Its what we learn for ourselves that are meant to help us.

Cheers and have a great day.

Hello Mr Trump and fellow readers, I believe we all, at one stage of our lives ,experience the feelings of the homeless man ,maybe not the reality of his situation.
I confess I have not read the book that so many of you have been so inspired by.I will endeavour to do so.
When you are in the situation of hopelessness, despair, poverty and know there is little possibilty of reaching for the stars,by reading ? {no disrespect to you Mr Trump or other inspirational, self help authors} ...what then?
I applaud your spontaneous generosity Mr Trump and wonder what this man actually did with the money ,did it help him,did it give him the stepping stone to a better life?
We can all pass on meaningful platitudes of cliched sayings, but how many of us pass these on from gut wrenching life experiences that authenticate the true meaning of our own mistakes...success and how we actually give to others.
I in no way intend this contribution to be disrespectful, nor do I intend to relay a personal bitterness. However as one who has survived many :gut wrenching life experiences: that those closest to me are in awe that I did,I do want to share this ....".Giving to others ...helping those less fortunate...should be approached in the same way as we give gifts to our loved ones...the same intent to give something special...the same desire to please with our giving.
I believe you Mr Trump ,gave in such a way....Bravo !

Interesting story-I would have done the same if I were you. I can understand why he was dumbfounded. It is tough out there. Its not easy to catch that break we all read about. Right now I am trying to catch that break and I am working hard and YES it is tough. My dad and mom didn't have an empire to leave me. Right now the only thing that I can leave my kids when I go to heaven is a business card that has my name and my AVP title. Let's not even mention a 401K plan. Unfortunately almost every American is taught this way of living. That's not leaving any sort of legacy. It so easy to choose the mediocre way of life. But what what would there be to talk about after I am gone? My love for them is great...I guess they can talk about that. But my love can't put bread on the table. And to achieve this goal is tough and when I do achieve this it will be such a sweet day to sit back and smile and say, "I did it".
