Networking or Not-Working

It pays to network. I always say that if you aren’t “networking” your “not-working”. Whether it’s socially or professionally, people who network are able to stay in touch with the real world.

I know many of us get caught up in our day-to-day lives and forget to make time for our friends, family or co-workers. When we make time to meet regularly with real people, we get to hear about all sorts of perspectives about life, business and personal relationships.

This is important for 3 reasons:
  1. Networking can keep your social and rapport building skills sharp. Keeping in touch with these skills is imperative in business, too. Whether you are in sales, management or interviewing for a job, if you lose touch with how to communicate “IN PERSON”, you are not going to be as successful.
  2. People who network with others tend to be more open to new ideas. They tend to be able to receive information more openly and more easily understand that other points of view have a great value. In sales, management or even relationships, this is key to solid give-and take foundation.
  3. If you are a networker, then you will tend to be more conscious about your personal appearance and presentation. Many people still don’t realize that people who look good and care about their personal appearance, tend to be more successful in business, life and love.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there in the interest of working on your personal skills. These skills are like knives, if you don’t keep them sharp, when you need them you’ll be dull!

What are some examples of ways you can stay connected when society seems to be forcing us to hide behind technology?

Hey now, technology does allow for some pretty mass networking too, when I was active in our community, I served as a fowarding hub. I received great information from multiple sources, sorted and sent it to the organizations that could use it. Everyone benefited. In turn, whenever I needed numbers for grants or proposals, all I had to do was ask. I got the nickname "the blanket bomber" when I did a mass campaign (two weeks) to improve the safety of the intersection where my husband was injured. The county road commissioner told me he had to buy a five drawer file to contain all the letters and correspondence he received from my requests, but I got results. I agree, face to face communication gives more feedback.

Pay attention. Talk to your spouse, children, parents, other relatives, friends, and neighbors. Listen. Join clubs. Volunteer. Take a walk. Read. Take a class. Go to the fitness center. Set up a book club, or coffee club. Go out to dinner. Browse the bookstore.

With technology, sign up for newsletters in and outside your normal area of expertise and news services, do a Google search on something you want to learn, develop a good network of diverse experts email addresses to run questions and ideas through, do a blog and ask for feedback.

The first step towards networking is leveraging on your own network.

You have a house to sell. You want the world to buy it. However, if you don't even tell your friends about it, how are you supposed to expect people to talk about your house?

The same concept applies to business or pretty much everything we do.

If we do not allow our promotion to run within the family or the people we care, we simply don't get anywhere, alas, we fail.

Leveraging networks are based on the fundamental principle that people only listen to you if they know you or heard about you.

You only talk to strangers second, after you gained enough momentum learning from the people you know. This simple fundamental principle needs to be thought. Otherwise, you'll just end up frustrated simply because you don't know why you're not learning enough.

Start from within, and then eventually you'll be able to move without.

Cheers, have a great day!

This is a good example. Some in the office play on the network and are not working .this can cost the company a lot of financial strain. It takes a lot of time to research out what your employees are doing on your dime.Still you are true,Keeping in touch is the way to be on the front lines. If you are not looking ahead you best be looking for an exit. This applies in all aspects of life. The most important part of this is of course being honest.Ill got goods and gains are just as easily lost.As the revealer I can say we all need to get the goal back fast.Where is our lives leading to?We can accomplish anything if we remain positive about the goal and keep our eye on the reward.

I moved from a large city to a very small city a couple of years ago. I started a new business in a career field I had no experience in. My instincts and experienced told me I needed to network and fast! I started getting involved in local organizations and going to the few places there are to be seen here. However, this networking was not the business focus I was desiring. The social networks helped me get to know people (which is never a bad thing), and helped me learn about the community while giving back. So, I approached BNI about starting a chapter in my small town. They said it had been tried before, but they were willing to help if I was willing to work! I have to say, it did take a little longer to get our chapter chartered, but we did it! I think one of the important things of networking is to have several networking venues (business focused, social, and charity). Not only does this enlarge your network, but it teaches you how to present yourself and your business in different environments. Be forewarned though - you can do too much networking which becomes unfocused and unproductive. I believe you should pick 1 from each of the categories - social, charity and business and be a productive, committed member of those networking groups. I am in Real Estate, in a market that I am told is down and getting new clients constantly. So, yes, it does work. Yes, it is work. Yes, it is worth it.

Thank you people. Your comments have been a big help to me. I'll have to check out BNI and other modes of networking. Maybe BNI could use help in my area and this could be my niche. My doctor said years ago that I don't take the time to look at the flowers and this is networking. Leave your computer and go talk to someone face to face. Explain your business and goals. That person could open doors. I have been without a car. You would be surprised at the interesting people you meet at a train station, engineers, oilmen. Chat with some while you wait for that train. Happy holidays.

My English is not so good to understand completely this entry but I think this is a good idea.

If one day, I don't connect with people (family, friends, customers,) I should be died!

Thanks
