The First Apprentice: Great Managers Work For the Team

It's been almost five years since that first season of The Apprentice appeared on television. The first winner was a young man named Bill Rancic, who has gone on to be a best-selling author, a guest advisor on The Apprentice, a public speaker and the host of his own reality show on the A&E Network.

Bill has done terrifically well since he became a celebrity after winning The Apprentice in 2004. I chose him above the other candidates because I knew he had the intelligence as well as the ability to be a combination of two things: a team player and a leader. He was outstanding in both areas, which is very important when you consider that all of us have to work together while maintaining our individual integrity and interests. Not everyone can find the equilibrium necessary to excel at both.

Shortly after The Apprentice premiered on NBC, it became the #1 rated show and George Steinbrenner had invited me to sit in his box for a Yankees game. Tom Brokaw, the esteemed television journalist and author, was also there and he tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Thanks, Donald, for what you've done for NBC. We really appreciate it." That was a perfect example of team spirit. He saw the success of my show as a success for everyone. He may be famous, but he knows his program isn't just about him, just as my program isn't just about me, either. We each have to be individually excellent, but it is also a team effort which will ultimately affect many people.

While we all work towards developing our unique talents and strengths, which is good and necessary, it's also good to keep the big picture in focus. Be a team player and know that approach will affect everyone in the most positive way possible.

..being a team player, which is something I'm am striving for myself, within the proper perimeters, as pertains to a duo of movie projects pertaining to the origin and debut of a new superhero figure, for which movies, I've just completed fresh new enhancing screenplay drafts.

Team play is by definition a must in the movie business with the backer, management, and creative multi-discipline collaborative processes entailed to get any movie made, but a movie still needs that foresighful general manager in charge who has the overall intrinsic vision in mind that needs to be accomplished to best build the test of time long standing, end project worth the effects of all those involved, and the desired favorable end use and expended resources of those to be partaking of that project - if its shoddily built and lacks the original vision set forth at the onset, the house will not stand, and attain it's market, and critical, potential goals, in the end. So it's both a measure of teamplay and a singular vision partaking of the interactivity and input of the team involved.

That said, who wouldn't know how someone might go about raising the significant level of backing needed to launch two superhero movies wih an aim of creating a box-office, pop culture sensation with these two projects, while.., keeping oversight control over these projects?

I have a staged funding conceptualizion, and a desired firmly set timescale, in which both movies can be (time sharingly) made for most appropriate release dates ahead that are well within a two year timeframe.

Calling All Team Players: I believe the support of peers is critical to the success of everyone at Trump University. We can talk about the celebrities, politicians, movers and shakers on Wall Street but supporting the efforts of each other should be more than talk.

Let's see how fast you can change your personal plans if necessary to help out "one of your own."
If you can afford the price of an ice cream cone at Trump Ice Cream Parlor (Trump Towers) located at 725 Fifth Avenue (Between 56th & 57th) New York City I would like you to join me on :

Friday, December 5, 2008 at 4:00pm (EST)

I am hosting a launch party to attract new customers and discuss dynamic marketing strategies.

Talk is cheap!

If you can't afford an ice cream cone, (and it's great ice cream, I have tasted it) then come anyway.
I can teach you how to never run out of money for an ice cream cone again in your life.

See you there...

It's so true that it's hard for many to excel at both leadership and teamwork. Many leaders forget that when those around them look good they will look good also. They let leadership go to their head and then their ego gets in the way. It's refreshing to see those who can strike a balance and understand it's not just about them.

I'd LOVE to see a Celebrity Apprentice with all political figures. How fun would it be to see someone like Newt Gingrich be in a situation where he must work with Bill Clinton, while going up against Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. The possibilities are endless and it would be a great show. Let them show their ability to lead AND put aside the party line for the sake of teamwork and charity. Maybe Congress could learn from such an example.

Now that is a fantastic mission. To work together as a team of experts in the chosen professional field expertise. A network.

Mr. Rancic has a great team and Network show on A&E "We Mean Business." Do they work together after the show?

OOOps I lost my comment before it was complete and I didn't post it, and I was trying to share an idea that just formed. I don't know if you can locate it, if you do, forgive the repetition.

*****IDEA COMING*****

When I did my orientation with a group of exchange students I would be coordinating for the year, I used to include this little excercise. I would give each a penny. Then, I would have them pair up and give the gift to each other. Then I would ask them what they had. Of course they thought I was crazy, and they would respond "a penny"

Next, I would have each of them think of an idea. I would have them pair up and give the idea to each other. Then I would ask them what they had. Of course, the answer was usually two or more ideas. They grasped the concept. This was a simple illustration of Napolean Hill's Master Mind theory. When you put two or more minds together, they act as a separate and third mind and it expands the possibilities because, first you have more ideas, then you build on them.

How about a Not-for-Profit reality show. Your recruits have to identify an American social problem (and later it could expand to world issues), set up systems to deal with it. This would include all aspects of leadership, and community building. This could be headed by your son Eric, if he felt the passion, and could work through your foundations. The winner of the of the season becomes the CEO of the system they developed - this would also leave them the option of hiring the other participants to fill positions on boards etc.

The really cool thing about all your efforts to this point, is that they are designed to make America stronger by bulding our business base. This one would improve the quality of life, and depending on which problems were dealt with, also improve the value of property in those areas. It would also build on a more postive image personally.

Hi there,

There in the end of Donald Trump“s blog are good advices for good leadership. I have found two good phrases which I hold on my workplace wall and they are:

"Vision without action is a daydream, action without vision is a nightmare"
"To have a vision fulfilled is enough for most; who have a vision that others follow is a king"

I think that in these sentences are something that a good leadership demands too.

****idea still in process****
Part one was what we discussed during our brief meeting.
OK, this is part two.

Select a smaller number of contestants. They in turn select a creative team. It is the whole team's project from start to finish.

School classrooms submit problems for consideration - application packet walks them through the process of identifying a local problem to present. The class that submits the selected issue wins a_________ (fill in the blank) I suggest a great latest technology classroom package. This could be donated by a technology firm working in collaboration with the network in exchange for air time promo. Classroom selected also gets to take part in a service project to help address the problem they identified under the direction of creative teams.

Once teams are assembled and project is selected, each team must research, and develop a public awareness campaign: documentary, radio/tv spot, magazine ad, etc. with public vote on most effective. This could also include a segment highlighting others who've had an impact and what they did.

Then teams create plan to address the problem identified. The solution. Team must form alliances for collaboration and develop sustainable fundraising. One measure of success could include public donations for the cause.

Teams could be evaluated on performance as teams, public awareness, cost effectiveness, alliance and collaboration, community buy-in, sustainability of systems established.

Age of classrooms could be varied from season to season to mix it up: 6th grade, College, etc.

The purpose of a program such as this would be to teach awareness of issues, help kids ID community problems and become proactive to address them. Also, to demonstrate to society at large how they can make things happen. This would improve the quality of life in America. This would build goodwill.

****Idea part 3***

If you love history, you could focus on one individual state per season, and as part of the background research required of each team, include this overview of the state's history as well. That would give you fifty seasons before going international. It would also reduce and concentrate the number of applications to consider.

***totally unrelated***

In one blog, you mentioned that you do not like physical contact. I understand, it can make you feel like a piece meat: everyone wants a piece of you; everyone wants to pose for a snapshot; everyone wants to touch you hoping the greatness within will rub off; everyone wants an autograph. While you don't know if they are well meaning or trying to set you up, pick your pocket, or what disease and germs they may carry, and after giving so much, you're just ready to escape and rejuvenate your spirit.

But, I find there is a great deal communicated in a hand shake, and if you work from that natural level of intuition, the human touch is a transfer of energy that can be felt. Definitely, it should be used selectively though.

Just FYI
OK, you got me thinking. What do you consider your organization's culture to be? Would you consider it a conservative corporation? Would you say the same skills are necessary to be selected as the Apprentice as are required to be successful in your organization? If you were to list them, what skill set would you say you are looking for? Are these transferrable skills? Do you feel the skills required in your organization are the same skills required to be an entreprenuer?

Forgive my lack of personal exposure, experience, or knowledge of you and your organization as I ask these questions. As your show, the Apprentice, progresses, do you allow the participants to watch the video and analyze to provide their personal and group evaluations? It is amazing what you learn about yourself and group dynamics when you can do this.

Regarding these blogs. They provide good starting points for additional pondering. Good mental aerobics. Thanks. I needed that.

I wondered if you would consider trying a few additional approaches like I tried in my presentations. Every program I did ended with a student evaluation. I wanted to see how effective the power of suggestion was, so, at the beginning of the first session, as I presented the executive summary of what the kids could expect to learn, I included statements such as "Class, bear with me, the videos are kind of outdated, but the message is the best I've found." or "Some of the excercises are a little crazy, but we should have fun" Guess what statements appeared in many evaluations? Whatever I told them was what they found to be true. We do get what we expect. So, to get accurate evaluations, I tried to be very positive, but not bias them.

The point of this is, if you really want to know how participants see things, occassionally you may want to start out by sharing the scenario, then asking questions (I know you excell at that!). After everybody comments, then follow up with your perspective.

I can't agree with you more that "Great Managers work for the Team". Managers are the hub of the wheel. They hold that wheel together. If it's broken or not working...that wheel is not gong to work properly. One thing about having a great manager who gets their hands dirty kinda makes you wanna work even harder. I've seen managers sit in their ivory tower and delegate but unfortunately that gets the team no where. You kinda want that leader to come down and dot the i's and cross the t's with you. Truly then you can say it was a team effort. A true leader is a person who can serve others and push others forward positively. You will earn respect of your team and they will work even harder for you. Sitting in a tower a lot of your employees will never see what talents and abilities that you have and they can learn from. Also the manager will not be able to learn from the team they manage. Managers working with their team will bring about unity and we know what great power there is in unity.

I enjoyed watching The First Season of The Apprentice for many reasons, but the two that stand out the most are that of teamwork and helping others. I am an elementary math teacher in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and our class will be working on a math fair project similar to your reality show, The Apprentice. The class will be broken into four teams of five and the challenge is for each team to plan, organize, and implement a fundraising event(s) to raise money for the organization that had the largest decrease in donations during the 2008 United Way Campaign. (we are waiting to receive this information) Students were introduced to the topic the day before Christmas break, and are very excited about the project. They shared a few ideas for fundraisers and we discussed the audience for the events, publicity, up-front expenses, and profit. I ordered the complete first season of The Apprentice on DVD so I could watch them again to get ideas to share with my students. I have someone scheduled to come and speak with them when we return on January 5th regarding fundraisers and how to plan a successful one to raise the most money. We would love to hear from you, Mr. Trump, through email, letter and/or a possible visit to Elizabeth City????? I was thinking about focusing on the phrase....You're Hired.....and highlighting the group that raises the most money for the organization similar to your show, but I don't want any feelings to get hurt.....any ideas? Students will have to predict the amount of money they will be able to raise, predict the number of people that will attend their event(s) and graph the actual results. Students will be required to publicize their event by various means such as email, newspaper, flyers, businesses, etc.. We are hoping to integrate as many math objectives from the 5th grade curriculum as possible throughout this project. The fundraising event(s) for all four groups will be held on the same day at our school. Students will select the date when we return to school on January 5th, but their options will be to select a day in the week of February 9th - 13th. What is your opinion????? This is the first project that I've seen this class really get excited about......they have no idea that I have been trying to find a way to contact you to see if you may be able to personally contact us or be a part of this special project. Could you send us a video message with words of wisdom regarding teamwork and marketing? Would you consider coming to the fundraising event(s) for a quick visit.....similar to your pop-in visits to the teams on apprentice during their challenges? Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Sandra Harris scharris2008@gmail.com, www.ecpps.k12.nc.us (JC Sawyer Elementary School)
