Champions Rise to the Challenge

I was recently interviewed for the New York Times by Deborah Solomon for their March 29th magazine. One of her questions was:

Your latest book of business advice is called “Think Like a Champion,” but isn’t it the American infatuation with thinking like a champion that got us into the financial mess?

My answer was: I would say no. I think it was the greed of a fairly small group of people that got us into this mess. The vast majority of people did not get us into trouble.

Last weekend, the Times had an article on Bob Newburger, who began his career on Wall Street during the Depression. He’s 95 years old now, and he is still on the stock exchange floor almost daily. The article, by Simon Doolittle, is titled A Lifetime of Perspective on Wall Street’s Hard Times. Mr. Newburger said that the current recession and the Great Depression share the same underlying cause, which was “greed.” That sounds familiar, and coming from someone who has spent over seventy years on Wall Street, I have to say that he probably knows what he’s talking about.

He mentioned that the experience of the Depression and other substantial shifts in the markets left him with a very useful lesson: “All you really have is the ability to be able to cope with whatever is presented to you.” He knows what it’s like to have to start over. He also points out that while people today are uneasy, “it was desperate then.”

The important thing to consider now is that while things are difficult, they can be handled. We have the ability to cope, and like champions, we’ll rise to the challenge.

Mr.Trump,
may I ask what's your comment on the "unpaid leave"?
(which happens alomost everywhere in the world
during the tough economy situation).

I think that "Think like a champion" is like "think big" philosophy. Both are great because they focus on positive energy and prospects.

Thanks for the post.

Yes, I agree with you Mr Trump. You MUST live your own life, considering other peoples feelings too of course but in a special way. When you are happy, so you can bring happiness to other peoples life too. I agree that in everyday living it is hardly possible to be happy all the time, but life must go on. You must stop time to time thinking what good you already have.
Our life is that kind of what our thoughts make it to be. The power of our thoughts is amazing.

A true Champion is worn by worries. "i am terrified by the threats of my enemies, crushed by the oppression of the wicked. I would hurry and find myself a shelter from the raging wind and storm. I see violence and riots in the city, surrounding it day and night, filling it with crime and trouble. There is destruction everywhere; the streets are full of oppression and fraud..." and how does he manage?.. "leave your troubles with the lord, and he will defend you; he never lets honest people be defeated..."

Mr. Trump, I think the current economy will be the subject of future books and studies around the world. I agree that greed was one contributing factor, but I think the problem was compounded by many different contributing sectors: real estate, banking, energy (particularly fuel), natural disasters and the resulting insurance crisis, the costs of national security and war, and global competition. What we really need to do is identify all of the ingredients, and then systematically change the recipe. For example, why are we allowing businesses to operate with cash advance on paychecks at extremely high interest rates? When I was a child, "loan sharking" was illegal.

As a country, we became complacent. It all crept up on us. But, each of us who has made a poor financial decision, or been less than our productive best has contributed - along with the greedy and unscrupulous few.

While I have yet to see this interview, I suspect that Ms. Solomon may have confused champaign and cavier taste and living beyond our means with the real winning attitudes and the hard work ethic that go into the making of a true champion. I guess we will all need to read your book to discover exactly what thought patterns of the champions we should be employing.

Best of luck with your book sales.

Good answer. Noone who is a true champion leaves a mess. Some people seem to have the perception that a champion is someone who only makes it better for themselves.

It's not like your book is titled "Think Like a ****"

And Bob Newburger sounds like someone to listen to, could learn something. Sounds like it was worse back in those old days.

This book arrived on my doorstep yesterday morning-literally UPS put it under the mat- I saw a lump and investigated- and there was the book! So far, this is my favorite of all your books. My favorite thing is that each essay is so short and so concise that I'm starting to call this my "red-light" book because if you carry this in your car and are sitting at a long red light- you can finish these essays before the light turns green! And yet each essay carries something of value to help you live your life as it exists today in a better way. Thanks for the inspirations!

She asked this question because of her thought pattern which goes "success = money = root of all evil", I suspect. Yet a champion is someone who takes challenge, and a person who is capable of turning lemons into lemonade.

Regarding this economy - it is known for ages: "good morals is good economy" and the opposite is true as well. The current economy is a seen part of an ice berg of a much bigger problem in society...

When people see a champion, they see only glamorous part. They don't see champion's routine. Most people are watchers, not fighters, and therefore, when they see someone succeed, they wonder and say: "How did he / she make it? He's / she's simply lucky." So they go on about their lives making this so called "champion's luck" their excuse not to perform.

Mr. Trump always an inspiration to follow your lead. I arrived here to make a comment because of an email I just received from you:

"by Donald J. Trump

I’ve decided that I would like to give you a challenge. My latest book is called Think Like a Champion, and if you haven’t read it yet, I would recommend that you do so as soon as possible. These are challenging times and all of us need to have as much training as possible to get through the race that lies ahead.

I have signed some of my books for the purpose of sending a few out to those of you who can tell me why you think you’re a champion--and why you deserve to be singled out. No doubt a lot of you are worthy, and the fact that you are furthering your education is an obvious sign to me.

So take the time to post a comment with a few of the reasons I should send you a book, and chances are good you might be receiving a gift from me. Remember, champions rise to the challenge, so give it your best shot. Hope to hear from you soon, and keep up the good work."

Mr. Trump I accept your challenge:

My own blog goes into many more of the details so I will keep this short sweet and to the point.

I believe we each are champions and every one of us deserves to be singled out, it's become my life's work to do just that. Together, or not at all. Highlights of how I Champion others:

- I'm an expat now living on a small island on a fjord in Norway, because this is where I found my beloved. Love is the single greatest reason to be a champion about anything! It's not easy, but it is the most worthwhile challenge in the universe. I highly recommend the strength and power of two or more, even if marriage is not a part of the masterminding.

- Implementing an "identity" online not only helped my wife and I to come together but now is a central theme to which I champion others likewise, let's call it Personality Marketing.

- As a coach I champion others "mindset" to be patient and persistent, it's not a simple thing to "Know Thyself" in this world. Not to mention in business, especially doing business in the virtual worlds of the internet. Having a coach that believed in me until my own belief in myself became a source of strength...well, let's just say that having good coaches still today is what has me Masterminding and Implementing my life's work, Giving Others Back to Themselves.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this Mr. Trump, it will be an honor to receive a signed copy of your book.

I'm eager to review your insight regarding rising to the challenge. I work at a post-secondary instituion. I continue to be amazed at how people are responding to present circumstances. What I find most interesting is this has proven to be a time in which one's enemies are quickly revealing themselves within the workplace. Insecurities, limited skills sets, lack of desire and ambition are being exposed now more than ever. Those who possess the desire and skills to rise to the challenge can quickly become under attack by those who do not. Navigating these trecherous waters can be difficult, but as you have proven is quite possible.

Again, I look foward to reading what I'm sure will be a thought provoking guide.

Hey, how's it going Donald? I just looked at my first property today and things went well. It was a home built 3 years ago, still in great condition, 35k SQFT and a 5/2.5 for 750K. I practiced some negotiation skills that I learned from your school, and left things off at either owner financing at 10k down and 1k/month (I'm still working on further discounting the down payment), or to stroke a quick check for 500K (was 615k at Zillow). The owner and I established a great relationship, and he is now thinking about closing the deal. I'm obviously aiming for a home run on my first deal, which qualifies me to think and become a champion. Can you do me a favor and send me your new book? Thanks buddy.

Mr Trump, 18 months ago at the age of 50 I decided to take on the challenge of starting my own business (on a shoestring budget) and moved from Australia to India in order to do so. The frustrations, challenges and demands I have faced have been incredible but I’ve remained optimistic, positive and have just kept on fighting. I refer to your website regularly for motivation and this is helping me to become a champion and I thank you for your insight and inspiration. Gail Baker

Remember the champions whom who face this challenge should have a very good quality of being patience, willingness and should really understand the consequence of the step he or she has or will take,of course not to forget victory is just the beginning and there is no going back.

Thank you

As always the Donald nailed it right on the head…."I think it was the greed of a fairly small group of people that got us into this mess."……the entitlement mentality that you so eloquently described in your other book is at the heart of this matter.…."The Art of Living is Winning the Game."

Thanks for sharing!

Donald Trump as always been a global brand, I am a 25 year old business woman who registered in 2005 but went through a terrible downfall due to lack of finace. Whenever I feel like giving-up on business, I re-call Donald's success after his downfall. Mr. Trump Because of the champions like you, I will one day make it in the Business Arena. You Rock!

Think like a Champion is almost a rhetorical statement to me. How else should one think?

My belief is "as a man thinketh, so he is" therefore I am who I say I am. This is biblical. Hence, you are smarter than I know.

Lana is...a Champion, amazing, wonderful and successful in all things. Not some. Though I'd like to think we could be best friends because I like smart people who are principled.

So YES, Donald, thank you for the reminder... and for many the wake up call!!!

You are the one and only DT.

Hugs,
Lana

This sentence of Mr. Trump caught my eyes: "I think it was the greed of a fairly small group of people that got us into this mess." The greed of a fairly small group of people? What does this refer to?

I am a champion because I enjoy the challenge of adversity. I am a champion because I don't let the world's misfortunes phase my attitude. I am a champion because it's what I want to be. I define myself as a champion, not out of pride, but out of respect for myself and security in what I'm destined to be. A champion isn't simply the winner of a petty game, a champion is someone who appreciates everything from life they can gain.

Life is not a heavenly place, most of the time it is a war zone but so far I’ve learn this: once you win the battle with yourself you have big chance to win the war.
Your book Why We Want You To Be Rich, the latest translate into Romanian was an inspiration, make me want to read more of your books so I’m taking my chance and hope that I will receive your book we can’t be all champions because it is only one place for a general in the army but we can be very good soldiers and do our best, look up for our general and win the war.

Mr. Trump,

I am a champion, because, I don’t give up when things are getting tougher and to think like a champion; you must bring the ethical aspect to the game. And I keep striving for a better tomorrow. I am keeping rising to a new challenge to better myself. And ofcourse, I will rise to your charlenge, also.

i have very good reason to believe that the cause of the world financial and economic crisis was caused by people very much related or close to the philippine president Arroyo. before the downfall of lehman brothers,i have known a person with multiple discipline that was able to navigate the world financial economy in a very healthy and gainfull way,but because the rein or the stirring wheel was grabbed away from him by people known to the philippine president, the financial holocaust happened. because of greed for power, these people irresponsively took the stirring wheel from the person who helped the world overcome most of the tidal waves created by wars and economic difficulty caused by hike in oil prices.....bottomline,i believe that it is the philippine gov't who are at fault in the financial crisis that hit the rest of the world...........

my specialty of work is the successful turn around of economy in crisis or gov't in the brink of downfall.....that's why the heading in this blog....champions,rise to the challenge...seems to be fitting to the kind of work that i do.......i consider myself gifted and also very lucky to devised a financial and economic tool to be able to navigate the world economy from crisis into beneficial and healthy state........but it have to be also with the help of worldbank and united nations stirring experts.......with the current status of the world economy,i could take the present challenge to stir and navigate the world economy simutaneously with the help of the experts from all over the world.........could be coordinated and syncronize to effectively achieve best possible result at the shortest lenght of time. i term it as a miracle work at Godspeed.......

It takes a lot of courage for a single grandmother ( almost in her 60's) to be raising three of her grandchildren. Our economy is not the greatest, it is very hard to support/provide for the needs of
our family. But, you know what?...I don't get scared, I've Been strugling for a long time...now that I think about it , I have been experiencing recession most of ly life and, I'm still here, Much older, divorced and rasing children for the second time around, why? because I'm not a quiter, I AM A CHAMPION, A CHAMPION LIKE A DIAMOND ON THE ROCK! and, I trust in Mr. Trump and his University to make me dazzle like a diamond,
dazzle with intelligence and success and why not, with wealth. Yes, I am a Champion.
