The Think Big Approach

The following question was submitted to "Ask Donald Trump" by Luke Yaugo:

You take a big kick ass approach to everything you do. How did you develop that mindset? From your father or on your own? Would you say the 90’s were the starting point of your philosophy? Will your children carry on this way of thinking? What is your vision? Where do you see the Trump Organization headed when you’re no longer able?

I learned a great deal from my father about many things, he was definitely a mentor and a terrific example, but my think big philosophy was more of my own. I wanted to build skyscrapers, I built them as a child with my building blocks. That was the starting point to becoming an entrepreneur. My father didn’t see why I wanted to move into Manhattan and build glass buildings, but that was my vision and I was determined to do it. I also realized it was just as easy to think big as it was to think small, maybe a bit more complicated but I liked the challenge. I definitely had to carve my own niche as a builder but I was prepared to do and above all I was passionate about it.

My first big deal was renovating the Commodore Hotel in New York City, which is now the Grand Hyatt. That’s when I knew it was important to never give up. That was a complicated and very drawn out deal, even my father couldn’t believe I was trying to do it at that time. The city was close to bankruptcy and everything was exceptionally difficult. But I just kept at it. When I had a financial turnaround in the early 90’s, I just refused to give in or to listen to the doomsday reports of my demise. I focused on the solution, not the problems, and became far more successful than I had been.

My children have done a terrific job and their vision for the Trump Organization is intact. They know we represent the gold standard globally and they are well equipped to carry that forward.

I've read your story over and over again and the one thing that strikes me every time is you philosophy on thinking BIG. It truly is just as easy to think BIG as it is to think small, thinking small has no advantage over thinking BIG. So why not take advantage of the rewards of thinking BIG rather than small. I don't have any hero's but I like your style

Your books helped me start thinking bigger.

Thank You. As I recall you saying and I agree 100%. Many people are afraid of thinking big and outside the frames. That gives people with guts enough to think big a real advantage. Know what to be afraid off. Like jumping off a 200 feet cliff.

Dear Mr. Trump:
I am a typical conservative accountant, owned 5 buildings downtown (4 paid for, last one had $117,000 balance). Considered and looked at 237 acres/48,000 square foot building, serious doubts, "scared to death of large amount of monies" and while trying to "work it out in my mind", my wife and I saw you in Washington D.C. and you said " If a deal is good and can be paid for, do NOT let the size of the deal change your mind, as most people do and end up walking away from the best deal in their lives."
We took your advice, did a 1031 tax exchange, bought the 237 acres/48,000 s.f. buildings (see www.historicjordansprings.com). NO regrets, GREAT advice, we will figure out how to say a "special thank you".
Now I will consider outside financing investors to be able to do a refinance (since banks and mortgage companies are doing nothing) and offer them 9%,10%,11% interest for three year loan of $5,000,000 with land as security.
ALL BECAUSE of YOUR attitude. Thanks
Greig

Dear Mr Donald Trump

We here in South Africa watch your repeat shows after at least three years on our normal SABC 3 Channel. These are great shows, especially when we experience competitors emphatically told
``You are Fired!''. Your show has really opened my eyes in a number of ways. Keep it up. I also aspire to your THINK BIG concempt; it works!

My request is in connection with the investment opportunities in Sout Africa, especially in ape Town where I stay. is there a possibility of looking at some of the proposals I have, aimed at benefitting the society at large, whilst yielding reasonably for the investor/funder?

Like Robert Kiyosaki said in his book 'retire young, retire rich' thinking big is about expanding your context.A larger context means more content.Context is your mindset and content is information. When you think big,you expand your context which prompts you to get information.Information could be in form of seminars, books, audio materials etc.Thinking big is about painting images of what could be.One good thing about thinking big is it keeps you going no matter the challenges you come across.Like someone once said ' the pictures of today are the realities of tomorrow'.

The Think Big Approach needs to expand to include the contributions of women. I have a great deal of respect for a father who teaches his son to succeed in business. By setting a firm foundation and acting as a good example to his children many people such as yourself have gone past the achievements of their mentor or "best teacher."

What about women?

I don't hear you speak about the contributions your mother has made to your success. Is there a reason for this?

Women from all parts of the world are starting new businesses. How does the Think Big Approach apply to Muslims, African entrepreneurs, or business women living in Cuba, Mexico, Ireland, Puerto Rico and other countries that have traditionally over-looked the many contributions of women to their families and society?

Hi Mr. Trump,
This is Sandi Herschberg a/k/a member1943351. I don't know if you had a chance to read what I wrote yesterday as to why I think that I'm a Champion. I wrote that I'm a Champion because I had the guts to approach YOU! If that aint THINKING BIG, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS! I just got a real kick out of reading about how you started THINKING BIG when you were a child playing with your blocks!! How cute is that!! I just want you to know that throughout the years, whenever I heard anyone criticize you, I always snapped at them telling them that they were just jealous of you. I truly pray that G-d blesses you with a healthy and long happy life. I've had the honor and pleasure of having met you several times and was always awed by your charisma. Naturally, I don't expect you to remember me. It has been said that people are six degrees away from each other. My second dad, John James Quinn (Special Features' Editor for the Daily News for 15 years until his early death at 59) was best friends with Fred Frisch. Fred was friends with your parents in Jamaica Estates. My brother-in-law, Mitchell Blank was best friends growing up in Scarsdale with Dave Boise, Jr. I met Dave at a party that my sister and brother-in-law had in Manhattan. I was having a lovely time having an animated conversation with Dave when my brother-in-law, Mitchell came upon us and told me that Dave was working for you! He had a huge smirk on his face when he told me that. He knew that I was plotting on how to get you interested in my business venture at that time (Phoenix Fiber Cookies). So now I'm picking Dave's brain on how to best capture your interest. Dave told me that you admire talent and that perhaps I should write you a poem. Thus, I went home and tried to write a poem that rhymed with your name. YIKES! Every word that I came up with was so not flattering and I tossed that idea out the window! However, F.Y.I. - to flatter you - I named my second Persian cat - TRUMP! (My first Persian cat I named Rocki Balboa - and YES! SLY STALLONE IS MY HERO!) My cat Trump answered to his name. He was gorgeous! Pure white with huge eyes and pink ears, nose and paws. He was a great love of mine and my mother's. He was the sweetest soul that I ever knew. He was also quite the stud and, as G-d is my witness, he loved to play with the phone and push pens around!
Best!

P.S. Trump, my cat fathered a bunch of babies with Rocki Balboa. Trumpett, Rocker, Courage, Gorbachev (he was pure white with a huge brown spot on his forehead) Shyness, Lecker (Yiddish for well, actually Licker but slang for Kisser) and Baby. Rocki loved to smack everyone around! I'm NOT making this up!!

Hi Mr. Trump,
I was thinking again about what it takes to be a CHAMPION. I retract my statement that I think of myself as being a Champion. No - MY PARENTS WERE! I'm a child of HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS. I know that I could NEVER have survived what they did. They lived through unspeakable horrors yet came to the United States, not knowing the language, not having family here yet built a beautiful life for themselves and for me and my sister, Rose. My father worked 2 jobs and saved enough money to start his own business. He opened a store selling only sweaters on The Lower East Side and named the store after my mother: PAULA'S KNITWEAR. My father's word was gold. People did business with him on a handshake. Although we were never millionaires, we definitely had a very comfortable life. We always went on vacations and my mother created a beautiful home. The most important thing that we had was LOVE! Both sets of my grandparents were murdered by the ****s as well as a bunch of uncles and one aunt. My parents came from Poland. My mother was in a Concentration Camp. My father somehow landed in the Russian army. Both my parents came from affluent homes. My mother's family had a castle in Poland. My father came from a banking family. That is all that I know about my family's history. Talking about the Holocaust was a taboo topic. However, now that both my parents are deceased, I wish that I knew about my family's history. Getting back to the topic of what it takes to be a CHAMPION - my guts, chutzpah, moxie whatever...is NOTHING compared to surviving what my parents survived. I am totally clueless as to how they did it. I guess that what I want to share with you and your readers is this: that no matter how hard we think we have it, there are people who have it a lot worse. We must always count our blessings. We all have the tendency to take a lot for granted. That doesn't make us bad people; it is only human. I did live through watching my mother struggle with a chronic degenerative disease - multiple sclerosis. Thus, I never ever take for granted the miracle of being able to walk, talk, type, eat food without choking, etc. When one has one's health, one has it all. So, no! I'm not a champion. I kind of freak out when my nail polish chips.

Hi Ya All!

This comment is for Cheryle who on 04/13/2009 blogged about why Mr. Trump doesn't address THINKING BIG TO WOMEN and also why Mr. Trump doesn't ever credit his mother for his success. Cheryle, I had a reaction to what you wrote. I, too am of the female gender and I've never ever got that when Mr. Trump speaks about THINKING BIG that it is in any way gender specific. Sorry, but I think that is just your own personal reaction and not at all the reality of what Mr. Trump speaks of. Secondly, re: Mr. Trump's lovely mother, I had the pleasure of once seeing him interact with his mother while sitting in Trump Tower's Lower Level (that is just gorgeous and open to the public). He and his mother and their posse looked to be celebrating. I can testify that his love and respect for his mother was visible for all the world to see. Having said all that, Cheryle, I don't know how old you are. I just know that in the generation before me, womens' role in society was totally different from what it is now. I won't even attempt to say which role is better as there are pros and cons to both. My mother was a stay-at-home mom and I'm sooo glad that she was! Me? My whole life has been about self-actualization. I lived out a 60's version of Romeo & Juliet. Except no one committed suicide. "Romeo" moved to California and I just stayed put in beautiful Forest Hills. I became the Black Sheep in my Eastern European Jewish family. I commited the cardinal sin of falling in love with an Irish Catholic instead of a nice (boring!!) Jewish doctor, lawyer, accountant. (YUCK!) Not only was my "ROMEO" not Jewish but he was a MUSICIAN! OMG! Well, to fast forward and get to my point, my heart was broken when "ROMEO" went to sow some wild oats on the West Coast. After the pain, I found MYSELF! I started taking acting classes, dance classes and wrote about 200 poems. Cheryle, do you really need Mr. Trump to SPELL IT OUT FOR YOU? JUST THINK BIG, GIRL! I spiritually love Mr. Trump! But he is NOT G-d! JUST DO IT! GO FOR IT! WHATEVER YOUR DREAMS ARE - DO IT! Life sure aint infinite. Live your dreams and don't wait for another person to tell you how and when to do it. Listen to your own inner voice and follow it. You don't need anyone else to pat you on your back. As for Mr. Trump's mother, his BEING DONALD J. TRUMP is all that needs to be said about his mother's role in his success.

Wishing you the very best of luck in fulfilling your own self-actualization, Cheryle!

Sandi Herschberg

P.S. I'm right now listening to "Romeo's" amazing music on my CD player. Actually, his name is JOHN ANDREW QUINN and if I have my way real soon - I'M GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS WHO HE IS - AND WHO HIS EQUALLY GIFTED SON - JULIAN QUINN ARE!

thinking about the solution rather then the problem and in providing a service etc... being a solution rather then a problem is one of my concept and your concept on believing your self even if others say your wrong, mostly end up making others realize there are other possible ways in achieving big goals, thinking differently, viewing life or seeing things in a different angle makes a person more positive but mostly its vary hard when most people don't see the world in this angle.

Thank you,

I just wanted to add that they do seem to be doing a great job at upholding the family name and you must be very proud of them.

Focusing on the solution is the most key thing you said here, and I hope it's something people take with them - especially in this day and age.
