June 6th marked the 65th anniversary of an epic day in history, which was the Allied invasion of Normandy. This was the turning point in World War II and is an event that warrants the great tributes it has received. President Obama, President Sarkozy, Prince Charles, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper were among those who were present, along with veterans, at the American cemetery in Normandy on Saturday.
Maybe some of you saw Stephen Spielberg’s film, Saving Private Ryan, which chronicles this day in a realistic and therefore devastating way. One veteran said this film is very much like what he experienced on D-Day. As for numbers, there are 9,300 graves at the American cemetery and 22,000 German soldiers are buried near Omaha Beach. That’s just the tip of the iceberg as for the scope of this day. 215,000 Allied soldiers and as many Germans were killed or wounded during D-Day and the three months following as they took over Normandy.
You’ve often heard me stress the importance of knowing about history, and this day is a good place to start. It was an amazing example of heroism and gave the Allies good cause for their name--they worked together in the best way possible against an enemy that was a threat to the world.
Always remember--military strategy isn’t that far off from business strategy--so even if you aren’t a history buff, studying this pivotal event will serve you well.
I’d also like to remember all those who fell at Normandy--and those who survived--for making the effort and the sacrifice for the freedom and advantages we have enjoyed in the decades since then. They should never be forgotten.

Ofcourse I was also aware of the 65th anniversary of D-Day, which marked a new stage against fighting hitlers evil actions. Unfortunately many lives were lost, on the allied side, axis side and civilians. Fighting evil has a price. The price could have been a lot less if it would have been stopped earlier.
One author, Sven Hassel, who faught in the German army, in a penal regiment, meaning this regiment was made up of people who was seen as criminals, political unstables and so on, has captured his experience of the fighting in northern France in 1944, and at one point he wondered if this once so beautiful country could ever be beautiful again.
It is important to remember history and learn from it. Many mistakes has been done and they don't have to be remade. You ignore history and you are an easy target for stupidty.
And yes, business strategy is as far as I can tell not far from military strategy. It's in the principles. For example, Attack, Defend. Don't flee, you can retreat, but only to regroup, rearm and strike again.
Never forget. Appreciate. Learn.
And we support their cause.
America...has changed on a lot of issues with world cultures. Not politically correct. To say a prayer. We pray and stand for what they fought for. Our freedom.
In the USA...something special is here.
You are right, there is much to be learned by studying history, strategy, and psychology. I think there is also much to be gained by learning to play games of strategy. I wish those were incorporated more in our schools. It is rare to have an instructor that takes the time to explain the strategies. Have you ever considered writing a book on the strategies of war and how they apply to your world? I always find it interesting to see real life application and big picture explanations of why.
Space exploration is the hope of the future. Maybe men and women can work together for the greater good of all without having to kill their neighbors as well as their enemies.
I would rather honor living heroes that make a difference than honor the dead by putting wreaths on their grave stones, knowing the heroes will never reach their full potential as a person, spouse, parent, grandparent, teacher and peace-keeper.
Our ancestors usually killed for survival. We are no longer dependent on hunting, creating fire or living in caves. So why should we act like cavemen? They also were a part of history. Does anybody really want to repeat their experiences? I don't.

When I market my product I sincerely believe that my product is something the consumer will manage and benefit from without suffering the ails of financial ruin. Very few marketing experts care if the consumer can shop another day, what is more important to most consumers is to close the deal in that moment.
Infomercials are a dime a dozen and most items are not necessary in the home, and yet in the era of microwaves, food processors and bread makers, most homes were brought to a crushing end as the market devoured each consumer with every new invention.
Donald we need not repeat history, but rather find new ideas and solutions in order to govern ourselves into the next century without such destruction as the centuries before us. It is wonderful to create wealth but at who's expense will it eventually be our demise. Boomerangs were invented for a reason.
Both my Great Uncle and Grandfather survived Normandy, and when they joined the army they lied about their ages both were under 16 years old on that day. My Great Uncles widsom, he never stepped foot on an airplane again. In their honor I skydive to this day.
That having been said he likened USA to Vietnam and Canada to Cambodia, shivers my spine, as he too is Cambodian saved by the Americans, yet he wishes history to repeat itself.
Now if we are to study war and apply this to business we are all surely to loose in the end. For as I told my son years ago, once you have conquered the world all that remains is to conquer yourself, and it remains inevitable suicide.
So what of the business man to conquer the market and have it all for himself. Is there enough to go around, or will we always be killing each other in the sport of competition and at whose expense.
I beg to wonder what Piers would have said in this conversation that lacked so little merit.
