Wrestling, Ratings and Guerrilla Marketing

Guerilla marketing is a term that was coined by Jay Conrad Levinson in his book of 1984, Guerilla Marketing. This is a form of advertising and promotions that depends on the unconventional. Imagination is key, and a big budget isn’t always necessary. Entrepreneurs use this technique, and it’s considered to be non-traditional--just what entrepreneurs are known for being.

A very good example of this would be the June 22nd WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) event that drew 6.8 million viewers. That’s a 25% increase in viewers from an earlier broadcast in June. Some of you may have heard of Vince McMahon, who owns WWE and is a brilliant entrepreneur. Vince and I go at each other once in awhile because we both like a good fight, and he’s a worthy opponent.

Vince’s WWE series is consistently one of cable television’s top draws each week. The episode on June 22nd garnered the biggest audience in seven years as I had (though scripted) decided to buy USA Network’s ‘Monday Night Raw’ from Vince. This attracted media attention and many viewers. But Vince ‘bought back’ the show and actually fired me. I ‘owned’ it for one night.

Was this for real? Yes and no. As entrepreneurs, Vince and I know that unconventional approaches to business and generating a buzz are important keys to success. It’s something to think about.

Thanks mr. Trump for sharing a guerilla marketing concept. It is a quick goal, well planned, and high risk strategy. In war, deliver your payload and get out quickly. Execute well mission accomplished. Wait for the devastating impact, whether it is profitable or a loss.

Vince McMahon is not your ordinary sales and promotion man. His skills are not something you can read about in a book and duplicate. His knowledge and experience have grown throughout the years, not like an overnight sensation or a contestant on America Has Talent.
The fact that he is doing so well in his field shows his commitment and passion for what he is doing.
A self-made man always follows his own instincts. He may like you, but probably wouldn't like working FOR you. Personal freedom to make your own decisions is one of the benefits of being an entrepreneur.
Of course, you already know all of this.

DEAR DONALD TRUMP!

Imagination is key,
but not in the keylock.
wealth is a state of mind,
but not at checkout in the shop.

The rich man with a thriving business generates a buzz and gets richer.
The poor man generates a buzz and gets beaten up in the street.

From The Art Of The Deal I have intensively read your books etc.
But it is an equally important study to find out why not one single thing has helped me one iota.

You can not compare a guy who sells postcards at the beach with a mathematician.
The guy who sells postcards is street smart and deeply into business already.
A mathematician knows nothing about the world or about business or about anything.

From that position 100 percent of your statements are either not working or downright dangerous.

This is not criticism. this is something that should interest you, because it is reality.

Please send me a letter, and tell me where the error is in this comment!
I don“t see it.
You see it!

Good Evening Mr. Trump,

What I find most interesting about Guerrilla Marketing, is observing when and how it is applied. It is often most effective when you are not in the number one position. Also, because it is usually a creative, new or unusual approach, it carries some additional risk. Its all about getting the most exposure for the least expense, and for me personally, about having fun in the process.

I didn't catch you in the ring, but I'm sure you were holding your own.

What do you mean it was not real?
The deals were a fake?

I love the guerrilla marketing concept, I have used them for years and often quite successfully.

In the 90's I managed an apartment complex that had fewer amenities than my competition. After reading an article in a property management publication that suggested most people who are paying higher rents for those amenities seldom use them; I came up with a marketing plan, created a flyer and posted it on all the car windows at neighboring apartment complexes.

The plan paid off with several phone calls and some traffic. My boss, however; got a nasty call from the managers of the other properties and called me with some harsh words.

Recently, Kansas finally removed the ban on real estate agents offering inducements to clients, so I came up with another plan.

Free horses to buyers of real estate in Kansas if you buy from Turn-Key Properties.

The horse market is all but dead and I have several perfectly good horses that I can't sell. If you list your real estate with me I will offer a free horse to your buyers when the deal closes. Of course I had to come up with some ridiculous disclaimers, because of the potential for someone being stupid.

I've just started promoting the idea and I've seen some positive results in web site traffic. Of course you always get a nasty-gram or two from someone who thinks its bad for the horse. But for the most part it is has been a positive experience.

I love watching Vinces show. Particularly Vince's performances. Really admire what he has created over the years. "Mr.McMahon" on the other hand...haha.

I suppose marketing doesn't always have to mean scramble together lots of money and do big campaigns. You just have to use your imagination and think outside the box. Be bold.

George Vedel you have good points, but don't you think that it's logical Mrs.Trump's books not to help everyone...specially "a guy who sells postcards at the beach "? Of course not everyone is matematician, but if you want to have some business you have to know how to make these simple calculations.I think Mrs.Trump's books are written for people with business ideas. It's normal they're not helping everyone.

What can I say, a brilliant idea! Generating buzz is a powerful promotional strategy, yet not many marketers use it.

Mr. Trump,

Thank you for the reference to "Guerilla Marketing," I am adding it to my reading list. What a fine example that you orchestrated with Mr. McMahon. You are being modest by not alluding to the fact that ratings went up due to your presence. I'm also going to look for a new strategic alliance with whom to guerilla market.
