We’re not going to be discussing Rodin and his famous statue today, but Edward de Bono. For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, de Bono is worth knowing about. He is an author, a physician, an inventor, an entrepreneur and a consultant. He has degrees in medicine, psychology, physiology, and design and holds many professorships throughout the world. He has written 62 books and he invented the term ‘lateral thinking’ with subsequent work on parallel thinking.
In using lateral thinking, you can provide a possible solution to problems through a creative and indirect approach. Trying harder and in the same way may not be as important as changing direction. “Lateral thinking is for changing concepts and perceptions” is how he puts it. As an example, he uses chess, as you start with given pieces. Lateral thinking allows you to change those pieces--just as life can sometimes provide you with challenges and changes that require you to figure out a new game plan when the pieces suddenly don’t seem to fit any more.
At this time, many of us are confronted with this situation. New thinking is required. As de Bono says, “there is a need to escape from a local optimum in order to move towards a more global optimum. The techniques of lateral thinking, such as provocation, are designed to help that change.” His book, New Think: The Use of Lateral Thinking was published in 1968, andwas followed by Parallel Thinking.
Parallel thinking is the opposite of adversarial thinking. “Adversarial thinking completely lacks a constructive, creative or design element. It was intended only to discover the ‘truth’--not to build anything.” As a builder and a businessman, I understand how important this approach is. It can move things forward with a coordination of focus that can save a lot of time and money for everyone.

Finally, his book Six Thinking Hats is a terrific guide to precise thinking--thinking without confusion, and thinking that provides results. Thinking is a skill, and as someone who doesn’t like to waste time, I can recommend his clear, simple and direct approach as a technique worth working on.

Thank you. I always look forward to your posts. I enjoy productive and creative thinking, and you usually provide fuel for that. My only suggestion is more. So are you planning any collaborative thinking projects with the good Dr.? I can only imagine the energy in the room - the best kind of power - Brain Power!
A good mind is a terrible thing to waste.
With the traditional argument or adversarial thinking each side takes a different position and then seeks to attack the other side. Each side seeks to prove that the other side is wrong. This is the type of thinking established by the Greek Gang of Three (Socrates, Plato and Aristotle) two thousand four hundred years ago.
Adversarial thinking completely lacks a constructive, creative or design element. It was intended only to discover the 'truth' not to build anything.
With 'parallel thinking' both sides (or all parties0 are thinking in parallel in the same direction. There is co-operative and co-ordinated thinking. The direction itself can be changed in order to give a full scan of the situation. But at every moment each thinker is thinking in parallel with all the other thinkers. There does not have to be agreement. Statements or thoughts which are indeed contradictory are not argued out but laid down in parallel. In the final stage the way forward is 'designed' from the parallel thought that have been laid out.
A simple and practical way of carrying out 'parallel thinking' is the Six HatsTM method which is now being used widely around the world both because it speeds up thinking and also because it is so much more constructive then traditional argument thinking. John,

You are keeping the Free Library on Block Island, R.I. very busy trying to borrow copies of your suggested Summer Reading books. They enjoy searching and I was surprised to hear the college libraries didn't have the War of Art.
They vowed to find a copy though. So we're all having a great time learning something new and enjoying the summer on this beautiful island.
Thank you.
People do tend to overlook these types of thought provoking articles. It's almost like our society forgot how to become better thinkers and educators. Most, fall into the trap of thinking like a robot...or robotic thinking.

I like Mr. de Bono. Writing 62 books (I will catch up) and earning all those degrees was not an easy task. You and I consider this great man a very successful visionary and revolutionary. The quote that really caught my attention was "Adversarial thinking completely lacks a constructive, creative or design element. It was intended only to discover the ‘truth’--not to build anything." Sometimes adversarial (difficult and unpleasant) negotiations are needed to reach the truth. To me, the ‘truth’ is the lasting foundation of every successful entrepreneurial enterprise, skyscraper, business, social networking, or marriage. Lies eventually fail. An uneducated Wise "Man" who did not write any books, once said that truth is freedom. You know Him, as you will see.
This Hamitic Wise "Man’s" resume includes: Noah had three sons. There names were Shem, Ham and Japheth (Gen. 9:18). This Wise "Man" whose Name is Jesus is a descendant of Ham (through Tamar: Matt. 1:1-16). He was born in the Middle East in a dirty cave in Bethlehem and laid in a filthy manger that animals ate out of (Luke 2:7). His parents took Him, as a young child, to Egypt to save His life from His enemies! (Matt. 2:13). Upon His return, He was then raised in the ghetto of Nazareth (John 1:45-46), and not educated by society (John 7:15-16). But this uneducated Man who was born in the ghetto with the government trying to kill Him, and raised in the ghetto, He became the richest and wisest "Man" that ever lived! (Matt. 12:42) and called you so-called extremely "well-educated" and wealthy religious leaders hypocrites (Matt. 22:15-22). Jesus is a ghetto Rebel with a cause. But an awesomely rich ghetto Rebel.
When He is around there is no need for political trillion dollar medical health plan overhauls, food pantries for the poor, or costly "before their time" funerals; because He miraculously heals all who are sick, He can feed hundred of thousands of people with just a few loaves of bread and some fish (Matt. 14:14-21; Mark 6:34-44; John 21:25), and He can raise loved ones from the dead and He even overcame death Himself when you leaders of "organized religion" thought you had killed Him (Rev. 3:21-22). Religion is evil. Billions of people rightly worship Jesus today, but they worship Him ignorantly. Jesus and I (and you) are successful Entrepreneurs, Business people, Visionaries, Lovers and Revolutionaries. Both Jesus and I are proud descendants of Ham. Jesus the Christ (the Anointing) is in "everybody" (John 17:20-23). Now that’s quite a resume!
One jewel of Jesus’ awesome business advice is this: "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Free from what? In this present context, it is free from untruthful financial advisors, financial institutions, negotiators, contractors, inferior building materials and free from multi-million dollar law suits. "Thinking" certainly is a skill. And along with "truth" and wisdom, right-thinking is needed to restore this economy that so-called "intellectual" and complicated business and financial lies have destroyed, for us, we the people.
Sincerely, your friend,
Dr. Nimrod Erech M. Christ Nimrod
