BHAGs are for People Too

Blog ImageIn their groundbreaking business book, Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, Jim Collins and Jerry Porras introduce BHAGS - Big Hairy Audacious Goals. These are 10-to-30-year goals that change the very nature of a business's existence and often the nature of entire industries.

People can have big hairy audacious goals too. Just look at Ed Viesturs.  Ed decided to climb all 14 of the world's 8,000 meter (26,000 feet) mountains. It took him 18 years to do it and it changed his life. At first, Ed was just another guy who enjoyed climbing mountains. After he set his big hairy audacious goal Ed's entire life changed one mountain at a time. Today Viesturs is a popular author and speaker, he has his own sponsors and products and Ed gets invited to shows like the Colbert Report.

Choose wisely. There can be only one. Big hairy audacious goals get into everything. Your work, your family, your fitness, your fun...everything. Once you decide to create your own personal BHAG you may know it immediately, but don't be surprised if it takes you a month or more.

  1. List your dreams and desires. Nothing is off-limits: family, friends, work, play. Look for patterns and similarities. Look for ways to combine things, especially from different parts of your life.

  2. Talk to family, friends, co-workers and colleagues about your BHAG. Tell them all the things you want to accomplish. Ask for feedback.

  3. Think about it alone. Close the door or go for walks. Give yourself space and time to contemplate.

  4. Don't take forever. If you go three months without selecting your BHAG something is wrong.

Pursuing a BHAG is a big commitment. It's a quest, a difficult trial with great rewards.
But it's worth it. To have one is to know how to find north on your life compass.

What is your biggest goal?

I've already set such a goal for myself, however my time horizon is shorter - 5 years. My goal is really ambitious and will take the best of me to achieve it, but I'm up for the challenge!

Tnx Donald,

Taking this subject to spotlight! The dreams are dreams until we tattoo them to the paper, audio, video or with so called public statement. Then dreams, also BHAG´s become Goals. And like Mark Victor Hansen said to me true C-tapes already in 1980´s that Goal Setting is Goal Getting. That is purely so. I ordered C-tapes from USA and listen them with my bad English (I´m native Finnish Entrepreneur) and targeted to become better sales person and someday be a fluently speaking one and doing Global business.

The dreams can come thrue, also BHAG s. Sometimes things can take time like Ed Viesturs journey took 18 years to complete. That should be a good example to all of us what targeted goal means. And soon as You reach Your innovations and goals there is always the competition. My fellow citizen, a Finnish Veikka Gustafsson, a professional mountain climbing man, have done same 14 over 8.000 meters high mountains in 17 years. And Veikka Gustafsson is on of the 8 rare who have done all of it without oxygen.

Both men are very good living example of living BHAG goal setter, Ed and Veikka. Althought I had admit that I value Veikka Gustafsson´s effort a bit higher because he is a Finnish and we Finns aren´t the population majority with our 5 million people here in the world. We are a small country in the world , but have brave hearts and indipendent minds - we have been mark maker many times like Veikka verifyes along Nykänen, Ahonen in ski jumping and all our engineers within mobile phones with our Nokia, which is a Finnish corporation if You didn´t know : )

BHAG rules : )

How do I get a permission to translate this post and put it somewhere in Russian? I'd tweet this, but without Russian - it makes no sence for my friends who follow me on Tweeter. And this post is so good I'd invest some time to translate this! (Of cource I'll keep the link to the original and put all the source and authorship information)

I have been thinking many times that what is my biggest goal. I have many goals, little ones and big ones and some of them have got already true. Patience is one of the keye issues when you are working towards your goals and the other is behaviour, you must be as flexible as you can and try not to quarrel with anyone, just listen what the others are saying and say your own opinion with a calm way. It demands self-discipline and that is very important in business life and in ordinary life.

Sometimes it is not so good to tell everyone what you are aiming to do, the idea can change to unwanted direction or it can be stolen by another person. When you are sure about what you are coming to do, so you can tell to a larger group about your plans.

Usually I get my ideas and thoughts in order when I take a long walking trip in the countryside after my workday and think alone about my plans. Some of my dreams and plans could come true and getting started in a one minute when I get e-mail from partner or friend.

And it is amazing feeling when you are asked to do something kind of business you really like and love. You are waiting it and will do your best that everything goes right on that exact occassion. It is true that you must act when you have this yes!! feeling. You have found your case and you can be sure that everyone involved in your case get as enthusiastic too and so you can get your businesses go forward in a fast way.

Turning goals into results: the power of catalytic mechanisms.

Greetings Trump Real Estate Investor,
Thank you. This is an inspiring entry, and I plan to read the book. In answer to your question, at present, my biggest goal is to pick myself back up, regroup, redesign my life, pay off my debts and build my future. Guess I'm planning to be a BAHG lady:) What's your goal?

Several years ago I noted that there were only eight men who ever deliberately set out to meet me while I was a complete stranger to them. All of them either published a textbook that is widely used in their field or are noted enough to be included in Wikipedia. The six in Wikipedia have also have someone else write a book about them. Seven of them are authors with books currently for sale on Amazon. It dawned on me that if men like that wanted to know me, then maybe I belonged in their world. My BHAG is to be a published author on Amazon and to meet and marry someone of the same caliber as the men who set out to meet me.

M y b i g g e s t g o a l.....I think one of the best ways to help people to reach their dreams, to make them believe they can do that, is to lead by example. So my biggest goal is to become the greatest and the most inspiring example in history of the humanity how to reach success and happiness in all spheres of life and to share that happiness with other people..........=)

And you know what? The next day I put it as my biggest goal, I found out about Trump University.......Coincidence? Well, I don't think so!=))))))

There is a great goal setting website that everyone should check out (it is free) http://successbeginstoday.org/wordpress/2007/01/goal-setting-toolkit/
