The following question was submitted to "Ask Donald Trump" by a Trump University member.

Question:
I am a first year diploma student specializing in Engineering. I prefer Entrepreneurship, business management and currently I am educating myself with those subjects more than my current formal education. Would you advise me to stay focused on my formal education for a diploma or for me to pursue my passion?

My Response:
If it’s possible, you should do both. It seems you are doing both now if you are reading my books. But if you clearly aren’t interested in engineering, it’s best to switch majors. I’m a firm believer that you need to love what you’re doing to be successful at it. Passion is a must for great success.

When you are just starting out, it is hard to see how all the different experiences, and things you learn will play out. Napoleon Hill said you would not have the passion, in you, if it wasn't something you were meant to pursue. The more we learn, and the wider the variety of our experience, the more we have to draw from, and the easier it is to make creative connections that may be the next cure or scientific breakthrough, or million dollar maker. As long as what we do is with integrity, only you can answer the question of is it right for you. What we were meant to do is a based on the mix of ability, interest, preferences, education and opportunity. Develop all of these to the best of your ability, and you will open doors beyond your dreams.

You might need to be employed, before it is what you find out what you are passionate about for your future and in the work world. A lot of people don't realize this before they get to school, or during college, but the possibilities are out there to be successful at finding out what you are passionate about, or developing your passion(s), once you've become member of the work force. One thing that you can do, that is strongly advocated and recommended by Trump University, is to become an entrepreneur in college, before you know it, opportunity will be knocking at your door, and you will realize that you have passions that need to be put under the microscope for your ultimate success. When you become an entrepreneur, you become the determinant, not the rest of the world, and it helps you exercise your strengths, and develop a path for you to follow in the future,a path that you are passionate about. Taking action, and becoming an entrepreneur in college will help you immensely, starting the day you decide to begin your own entrepreneurial journey. If you are interested in both, for example, engineering and becoming an engineer, as well as becoming an entrepreneur, and you are in college, find a way to make the two fields dovetail into one by becoming an entrepreneur first. You could be studying to become an engineer as an entrepreneur in college, and realize that your learning helps your business, and that maybe one day, you could set up your own practice as an engineer, and that you have learned valuable skills in school, that helped open doors of opportunity when it comes to the possibilities you've allowed yourself to create by owning a business. Becoming an entrepreneur is a great idea, but the best idea is becoming one today! Good luck.

I am a middle age teacher who majored in Natural Resources Management. Though I love planning trail systems and developing docent programs and giving nature walks and talks, those did not ful fill me as much as teaching the basics to teens and to inspire them to be life long learners. But, now that I see the light at the end of my life, I know that I always wanted to have something to do with dance. Imagine that you have done every thing under the sun that you love but the one thing you have always wanted to do more than all of anything, something you have dreamt about since you were a teen. That is the passion that I am talking about. The passion that nearly burns inside you waiting to bust out any day. The passion that if you do try it you will regret dying if you didn't give your self the chance to do.

Now that the teaching market is over saturated, this might be my opportunity to follow my heart to the higher more challeging road. The competition for teaching jobs is tough, about 200 to 1. When you are middle age competing with young people who can start at entry level pay in a tough economy, the chances of landing a new teaching job are slim to none. I have more incentive now to change courses.

What am trying to tell this young person is don't give up on your dream for practicality. I agree with Mr. Trump to pursue both. But life is short. Don't wait too long. A background in engineering is a good thing to fall back on, but the sooner you take the course that gives you bliss, the faster you will be able to persue your passion. I don't recommend waiting until your 50.

But I believe we are never to young to try. Here's something Jim Rohn has been quoted for over and over: "The worst thing one can do is not try, to be aware of what one wants and not give into it, to spend years in silent hurt wondering if something could have materialized--never knowing."

If you prefer entrepreneurship/management over engineering, then indeed switching your major makes sense. You also might think about combining the two if you think this is possible.

It is right that you must enjoy what you are doing, but it is not enough. You must get your earnings too about these doings and you must be sure that you have work to do even next year and so. But when you have positive attitude to live and have a good grab to work so there can show up opportunities what you have ever imagine to appear. As Mr Trump earlier said: "Never give up -- ever!"

Follow your passion! Give yourself a mental check-up - if business and entrepreneurship is what makes you excited, brightens and lifts you then follow that path. If engineering does it too then do both but I would say that you feel you have to finish engineering. Remember please yourself not everyone else. Take it from a 48 year old who has been trapped in a profession that has dragged me down. I wish I would have done something different years ago but it's never too late even for me!

I quit from my real estate management education to pursue my passion, a valid reason to quit by the way. I felt lost in real estate and got enough of trying to fool myself that I was interested in it, which I definantely was not, never been and most likely never will be. Switching from it was a daring move, but definantely the right thing to do. I rather be on the right & more painful path then the wrong and "comfortable" one.

Today I can say it's been one of the best decisions of my life. You just have to dare do it and most likely, eventually you will end up in the right place. And if you don't, just keep pushing on, anything is better than going down the wrong lane.

I've learnt a tremendous amount just throwing myself out into the heat of action. So, pursuing your passion is very healthy.

Hi Donald,

I sometimes struggle to connect my business with my passion. I love what I do as a web design business, but I also have some great ideas and beliefs not related to work such as environment, fighting global poverty, etc.

I wonder if I should find a middle way of combining both worlds or to keep my business affairs and personal interests separately.

I asked this myself many times and the question still remains unanswered.

Best,
Richard

You want to love your job so much that you would do it even if they were not paying you! I love children's ministry that way- in fact- they don't pay me- and even when I'm overwhelmed- I find myself volunteering for more and greater responsibilities. I even take off a week in the summer to teach VBS! This summer, I'm coordinating it! There is no substitute for doing what you love!

Donald- congratulations on your daughter's upcoming marriage! You have to be feeling a million emotions right now- Ivanka is an amazing person and the photos of her lately are just glowing! Here's wishing that she is always as happy as she is at this moment. Take some time to be the proud father- and enjoy every minute! Know that you have seen that she gets a great prenup- but from the way she is glowing- she probably will never need it! Enjoy- Enjoy-Enjoy!!

I became a nurse because I knew it would always be steady income. As I have gotten older my actual passion is to be an entrepreneur. I enjoy many home business, direct sales, and network marketing opportunities. I tell people today to really choose something that you have a true passion to pursue. It will make your quality of life better and it will be easier to succeed.

Waking everyday, excited to do what you choose to do, in a way that reflects your values and temperment is ideal. Discipline helps get you through the times when your passion may be resting.
Expecting changes in your chosen profession is reality. As the global population increases, and people from all walks of life seek a better lifestyle, competition for well-paying jobs increases.
Adapting to these changes is essential. Sometimes that can mean increasing your effort in what you are doing now, and sometimes it means changing what you are doing.
College is preparing you for those changes. It allows you the time to meet new people, ask questions and adjust your thinking. At this point, nothing is written in stone.
I think you should finish what you started. Focus on your education, and learn as much as you can in your field. Become an expert, the "go-to man" that other professionals come to for solutions to problems or answers to their questions.

Yes, passion is very important.
I teach that to my clients and students every day.

You have to decide whether you want big success or a "normal" life. For great success you need to love your "job".

Hi, I'm from the Philippines. A big YES for pursuing your passion. Just like me, I'm a registered mechanical engineer and for many years I tried to pursue a career connected to my college diploma. I was into steel fabrication, engineering estimate, technical sales, safety, etc. and I also worked with a number of companies, and I jumped from one company to the other trying to figure out where I will fit myself. During those times working, I always imagine doing activities that make use of my creative imagination and unique talents. I really love designing and conducting presentations, and I'm really good in touching emotions of the people. I also love to travel, the challenge of breaking new grounds, developing business opportunities.

You know what, when I decided to focus on applying for a marketing job, I got the job easily at the salary I set for myself. I will start tomorrow for this new job. Well, I'm pretty sure now that GOD created me for this kind of work - to bless people - my employer, my co-employee, the industry and business partners with my business development and marketing ideas and unique talents.

GO FOR YOUR PASSION

By the way, I'm also a professional Elvis Presley Tribute Artist here in the Philippines. I performed live performance in TV, private parties, forums. This area of my life made me unique. Could you imagine an licensed engineer, a marketing manager conducting seminars, presentations using Elvis pictures in his slide. I arranged my hair everyday and wear suits, boots that will really identify me as Elvis, EVERY SINGLE DAY. Its PASSION AT WORK.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Passionately yours,

Alex ELVIS Torres
