Ever since writing my first business plan I've had misgivings about the traditional business plan writing process. It took awhile to realize why, but eventually it dawned on me. As an entrepreneur I wanted to write action plans, not presentation pieces.
Whether in business school or in business books, the goal of most how to write a business plan training is to raise funds from investors or bankers. For example, today's tech startup culture is completely geared toward attracting capital from outfits like Madrona Venture Group or Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. This is fine if you desire to create the next IPO or pray for Facebook or Google to acquire your startup. You need an in-depth business plan that demonstrates how your company will return a six-fold return on investment.
What if you're in business for yourself? Do you need convincing? Or have you already made-up your mind? Flipping a business or going public was not my goal. I was bootstrapping. My only investor, employee and shareholder was me. My objective? Use my brains and wit to support my business with the revenue it earned and, in the process, build personal wealth. I did not need a business plan to convince me what a great idea I had. I needed a short, sober action plan to push me forward toward my goals.
How did I write my bootstrapping business plan?
It was quite shorter than anything my old college professors would have praised. My focus was on the operations plan and the marketing plan, the getting things done sections of any business plan.
Operation - What would I do and how would I do it? Two pages.
Marketing - To whom would I sell and how? Three pages.
My bootstrapper business plan had three more brief sections.
Finance - What would it take to make a profit or how long would I last before going broke? This included modest revenue projections, Scrooge-like expense budgets, monthly living expenses and available cash savings. One page.
Market - Yes, there was a need for my expertise and people or companies willing to pay for the services I offered. My big list of prospects was already in an Excel spreadsheet, one I knew intimately; there was no need to paste it into my business plan. One-half page.
Competitors - Yes, I had competitors who, if they happened to notice my fledgling company, would briefly gloat at my demise. No, they did not have an impenetrable chokehold on the marketplace. That's all I needed to know. One-half page.
On the cover I printed my business name and my elevator speech. I didn't bother writing an executive summary that only I would read. One page.
That's it, eight whole pages.
I'm not saying that my bootstrapper business plan is for everyone. You should compare it to Trump University's free How to Write a Business Plan course. Then, create a plan that is right for you. With a little thought and planning. you can write a business plan that will keep you focused on your goals and objectives.

Has anyone ever mentioned how intuitive or even psychic you are; because you read my mind. I struggle with how to talk about a gold mine idea to a genius. How much explanation do they need. For example maybe there is and maybe there isnt already a DONALD TRUMP (male doll). But I think the world needs one. I can tell you why and I can write the best promotional concept. First please let me mention a superior business plan takes research, the fact that I dont even know if there already is such product is not good, business speaking. However is the above suggestion for my benefit to try and get ahead by ego manipulation. Your intuitive energy reaches across globes that would never get by you anyway. I have never met you but I can read people and I'm a truth seeker. I seriously do think a Donald Trump (action figure, if you will) is something that America if not the world does need and I will tell you why. Your signature words in my mind are "LOVE WHAT YOU DO" ; and wasnt it Confuscious who said "Do what you love and never work another day in your life". More then half of Americans hate there jobs and as far as I'm concerned that fact is the reason for crime, family break-ups, child abuse and evil in general. What a powerful message to send and to drive home, "LOVE WHAT YOU DO" and you will suceed. Donald Trump said that. What is more important is he lives it.

For that I need to write a business plan, and since my background was photography, I was stuck. I read several books and even had some template I acquired online, but the amount of detail I had to prepare was just overwhelming.
I mean, just like you said, I just need to write down my plan of action so that I can come back to it from time to time. I don't intend to get any funding from investors. It was so much for me that I had to postpone writing it altogether. But your blog has helped me realize that I could do it my way.
Thank you...
I'll go check out this sites business plan process, next :)
Yes, thank you for the help and i do have great idea's with a great concept's. In reference to member 1815053, "the rest is only mathematic".
For me the brilliance stops at the numbers.
Hence how do you write a business plan when (my strong point) is just plain writing good copy and invention ideas. Any other bloggers stuck in the accounting pool? I can swim with sharks but not if they major in accounting spreadsheets. The truth, i would rather study astronomy but mathematical business concepts? I'm not grasping, help! Anyone?
Teresa
I would like to respond to member 1815053, "the rest is only mathematical".
I believe the root of 99% of human suffering is traced to folks who hate THEIR jobs. My strength is in product ideas and writing copy. I'm also a certified handwriting analyst, spent half my life in college and not one class offered had business plan writing. I'm reaching out to other bloggers for ideas too. Bootstrapping was something I could grasp, thank you. But when i read the rest is mathematical that was where my brilliance ended.
I can swim with the sharks but not if they major in calculus.
HELP, anyone else out there like me?
BTW, in my observation DT is also one of the best examples of loving a family, the way he does. However even lower in-come families could be happier if they loved their jobs. Teresa

Maby you can come out with such a training?
"Business plan for myself" - how to write a short action plan that keeps you ontrack and never worry about venture capitalists (they usually come looking for you)
:o))
I'm serious. This text started my juices but when I clicked at the link, it was just the ordinary "short training in business plan writing" already tried and failed.
Please teach me how you managed to structure yourself. The beginnings. What are the bases that needs to be covered and how. For myself, not for presentational purposes. It's very valuable.
Thanks for this great text again and all the Best!
