Episode Summary:

As this week’s episode began, only five celebrities were still in the running. They were Stephen and Trace at team Empresario; and Carol, Lennox and Piers at Hydra.

The teams designed sandwiches for Quiznos, and then sold them without calling on any of their high-powered friends. That meant sheer salesmanship and pavement pounding as they couldn’t rely on any big spenders to pay big bucks for a single sandwich. Whoever sold the most sandwiches would win.

At Empresario, Trace stepped up at project manager. Although he has brought in a lot of money for his team during past tasks, he’s yet to earn money for his charity with a win as project manager. At Hydra, it was Lennox’s turn again as team leader. He took the helm with the ever-present Piers offering suggestions at every turn.

When it came time to create their sandwiches, the teams took different tacks. Team Hydra chose to make only a minor modification to Quiznos’ most popular sandwich: a fairly basic turkey and cheese concoction. They named it the Champ Sandwich after, who else, but their resident champ, Lennox. Over at Empresario, Trace came up with something much more original, a unique sirloin creation called the Cowboy Club.

Both teams took to the streets early to promote their sandwiches. At Empresario, they immediately had flyers printed up (featuring both Trace and Stephen in cowboy hats) and were handing them out well before selling time started. Things were rockier at Hydra where the flyers didn’t come through until minutes before the sandwiches were ready to be sold.

Both teams seemed to do a good job drawing people into their restaurants. Hydra used the Lennox star power, promising autographs and photos with the boxer to anyone who bought a sandwich. While Hydra’s Piers was yelling like a carnival barker, over at Empresario Trace had a much more laid-back approach, wooing customers in a calmer, more low-key way.

Although it looked like both teams had a steady stream of customers, in the end Hydra won, selling 313 Champ Sandwiches to Empresario’s 253 Cowboy Clubs. In the boardroom, Trace was willing to take the blame for the loss. “I made every call. I called every shot,” he admitted to Mr. Trump. “The onus is on me completely today.”

But Ivanka pointed out that Trace has consistently raised more money on every other task than Stephen and, when Mr. Trump asked who wanted this more, Trace spoke up and emotionally spoke about how much he wanted to win for his charity. In the end, although Trace was project manager and had led his team to a loss, Mr. Trump felt that his past performance made him more valuable than Stephen, so Stephen was the one to go.

This week’s episode taught important lessons about marketing and self-promotion. Let’s take a closer look.

* * *

Hydra stuck with Lennox as its celebrity draw and sold a variation of Quiznos’ most popular sandwich. Instead of trying something new, they marketed with tried and true.

Success Lesson
Don’t mess with what works.
As Ivanka pointed out, there was no need to reinvent the wheel. And it worked. People flocked to see Lennox and they bought the sandwich in droves.

* * *

When Lennox took over as project manager, Piers immediately began throwing out ideas left and right. Carol complained that Piers always tries to take control but Lennox stayed cool and took the suggestions that were good ones.

Success Lesson
Be willing to listen.
Very few good leaders lead by dictatorship. When your team members have something to say, hear them out. In this case, Piers has had lots of good ideas in the past and his ideas - to use Lennox and a twist on the best-selling sandwich - probably won the task for Hydra.

* * *

When it was down to Trace and Stephen in the boardroom, Trace gamely took the blame for losing the task. However, he quietly pointed out that he thought overall he was a more valuable player who had raised more money in the past than Stephen.

Success Lesson
Know your track record.
Everyone makes mistakes. But don’t let one poor performance take you down. In a professional manner, remind people about your past success and hopefully, as in Trace’s case, your past performance will outweigh one bad outing.

* * *

Also, when Mr. Trump was in the boardroom deciding Stephen and Trace’s fate, Stephen talked to Trace about his likability. “I think they like you more than they like me,” he said, matter-of-factly. Even Mr. Trump commented about the cowboy, “He doesn’t talk much but, when he does talk, it’s something special.”

Success Lesson
Be likable.
In the cutthroat world of business, this seems like some unusual advice. But in this situation, it was apparent that Trace’s likability had a lot to do with the fact that he earned a spot in the final four while Stephen was fired.

What will happen next week? When the final four candidates were announced, Mr. Trump called Trace, Piers, Lennox and Carol back into the boardroom and announced that four more would go home before the end of the evening. He gave no hint about how he’d decide which two would stay but the remaining four are all strong contenders. Piers is probably the most colorful, bombastic player but at this point, it’s anyone’s game.

That was a good episode....to earn it on an even playing field.

But was it ?

It should be fun to watch the final. Look forward to the winners!

So glad that Trace didn't go. I'm thinking there's no way that good guy can triumph over Piers but I'm glad he's at least got the chance to continue a little bit longer. I loved the way he was talking to the New Yorkers on the street versus Piers' in-your-face yelling. Classic.

I was sorry to see that Trace and Stephen's team lost. The challenge was to create an orginal sandwich for Quizno's. They did that. The other team did not. Taking an already existing sandwich and changing the cheese does not make it orginal.

I was very surprised when i heard that Epressario had sold the most sandwiches. It could have been for any reason :

1. An extra player(as Stephen mentioned)
2. Better location with more volume of people passing
3. Lennox Lewis' popularity
4. Flyer layout

Empressario's sandwich was too original with no creativity and for it to be called a "Champ" sandwich with it being so simple, the least they could have done is throw some ranch dressing on it with diced or sliced tomatoes and head lettuce, then it could be called a champ sandwich. My guess is what really made the sales was the fact that when they purchased one, they would be able to get a autograph or picture taken with Lennox Lewis.

Hydra's "Cowboy Club" by far exceeded Empressario's sandwich. It was very creative and stood by it's name and i wouldn't be surprised if Quizno's adds the sandwich to its menu line.
Both Trace and Stephen deserved the win by how hard they worked(with just being the two of them). Compared to the last task with Omarosa, Stephen actually put effort into selling in this task.

On Empressario's side, Carol was creating the flyer while Piers decided to go outside and gather future prospects for customers. Rather than help Carol or support Carol, Piers would mock and complain about Carol's effort to Lennox. Lennox decides to walk away and go back inside to talk to Carol and see how she is doing rather than listen to Piers. Thank goodness to Lennox's patience and trust in Carol's word, the flyers show up.

One thing about the flyers that probably made a difference in sales between Empressario and Hydra was that Empressario added a photo of the Quizno's sandwich they were selling, whereas, Hydra did not include one. I am saying this because alot of people respond to what their eye sees. They are able to see the product with their own eyes which also activates the lunchtime hunger in them.

Both teams did very well, with the exception of Piers. Although Piers may be very smart, I do not feel he has the communication or sales skills needed.

Ivanka was left in a tough position by Mr. Trump, but I believe she made the right decision.

As to when Mr. Trump asked if either one of them truly wanted to be his apprentice... I believe that they are there for charity, but Omarosa was the one that truly was working hard to be Mr. Trump's Apprentice.

Ivanka was awesome in the boardroom tonight !

Thank you.

Now, my son started to watch Apprentice a few times last year however decided they all fought to much and went back to his guitar, until tonight. Of course it is no secret he is in the sandwich business, so I thank Ivanka for her taste tests, and comments as the show progressed my son was more and more captivated, not by the celebrities but about his business.

In a word he was surprised Lennox won, because no one knew who he was as Piers tried to sell him on the street. My son was more keen to see the cowboy selling beef and Trace kept my son's attention.

So hats off he watched the show to the end.

As for who is fired after the camera's quit rolling I have to say Carol is my first pick. Guilt washed over her face instantly, more so than the others. In particular what bothered me, she pointed out she was fortunate to have survived the other women competitors. Bad move, because by proxy of her stardom it was up to her to support the other women so that there were not four men standing and only one woman left. She should have had Marilou by her side only then could she celebrate true success where statistics still report an unfair advantage for men in the work a day world and politics.

In other words it was not up to the Trumps to level the gender balance, it was up to the women to ensure that equality and Carol failed to support that process right to the very end.

I agree with user20820 - I am surprised every single week when Hydra wins. Piers' bombastic manner is one thing among his team (not saying it's accpetable there) but when he displays it for all the world to see? For potential customers? How does he keep winning? And by so much?

Then you have Trace with his genuine manner and downhome, talk-to-you-as-a-person salesmanship - and his team keeps losing. Yet he raises the most money individually. It's a mess.

Though after yesterday's episode, I think Trace Adkins and Stevie B HAVE to do a movie together. It would be brilliant! I never laughed so much during an episode of 'the Apprentice' then when those two were on screen together.

Enjoyed the show this week.
Think it was only fitting that Steven went home. Noticed that although Hydra sold more, Empressario ran out of sandwiches, which caused a delay. Think that this may have been due to a lack of attention to minding the store- which was clearly Steven's job. Trace's sandwich was clearly a better sandwich than Lennox's. My son and I have never been to Quizno's- but we plan on finding one in our area and buying one of those delicious Cowboy Prime Rib sandwiches. Yum!

Glad to see that Trace, Lennox and Carol are in the final four- would be glad to see any of them in the finals.

Last season, Sean told us that Donald Trump never hires an Apprentice who has lost as PM. If that is true, then it is down to Carol and Lennox for the win- no matter who the final two happen to be.

In a way, I would be sorry if that was true, because I'd like to see Trace get a chance to get SOME money for his daughter's charity. He had worked so hard, and done so much, and raised so much money for everyone else- and really went all out in some really tough situations- even when he was not comfortable- he stepped up to the plate and gave it his all.
If anyone deserves money for their charity, Trace does.

On the other hand, Piers does not deserve any more. He has been a bad sport all alone. The only consolation is that the Intrepid Heros is a really good cause. Hope that when Piers goes down, it is glorious to watch- as he has gloated over so many of his fellow apprentices going down before.

Looking forward to next week. See you there.

Well in ode to Ivanka's concern for family food and the complete dining experience at Quiznos I set out today in search of the perfect combination. Of course I had to improvise because Quiznos is not a restaurant in my location.

What I did find was a sandwich bar that served Alberta Beef wraps delicately sliced served with a side order of chips. I had the option to select fruit cups and if I bought the local paper, a free coffee too.

While I wait a spectacular dome opens to the skies, where the natural sunlight bids the surrounding view of the Rocky Mountains, and a summer porch to enjoy the community's celebrations.

Downstairs the daily run up to the mountain invites tricksters to snowboard and downhill or perhaps for the delicate soul a simple tour to experience the wonderment of the Glacier's.

Whatever your taste there is something for each age group to enjoy, and yet there is something missing ?

There is a lot to be said for Trace's demeanor. He comes from an industry of song and dance. The allure of the dark night clubs and the talent to greet those who might not be able to stand after the seventh round of pints. In order to survive such an industry either one stays quiet and sobber or one's joins the drink quiet or not.

Why not involve America! On the next live show, open with people logging on to a website where they can make donations to the person they would like to win! Of course the money would go to their charity. Give America one hour to "vote" then reveal the results at the end of the show. I vote for Trace!

I am thrilled at the final two contestants.

Trace Adkins is so incredibly likable. I know nothing about his music, but I read the first few pages of his book in a bookstore recently, and I will buy it the next time I am in the store. He comes across as such a genuinely decent human being. I totally agreed with his sentiments regarding the Backstreet Boys.

As for Piers, I had not heard of him before this contest, but I think he is wickedly funny. I am also thrilled he defeated Omarosa. Omarosa is the Rosie O'Donnell of the Apprentice. She gets in the gutter. In fact, from season one when she told George Steinbrenner that he had "serious bling," to her very last "gangsta rap" pose in the cab after her latest firing, she seemed to be out of place among her more accomplished competitors. Piers dispatched her, and order returned to the show.

Firing Carol Alt should be illegal. Elaboration is unnecessary. She is Carol Alt. I eat red meat, but if Carol Alt smiled at me I would adopt her raw foods diet.

Lastly, below are my predictions from last year, and my retraction the next day after I got everything wrong. If Mr. Trump likes my detailed and completely inaccurate analysis, I would be happy to let him.

WOW!

This is the frist year I have watched this show and I love it! I find myself on the edge of my seat sometimes... laughing, holding my breath... what great tv!

I never really had a grasp on how I felt about Mr. Trump. Watching him... you see what a fair man he is. He hits the nail on the head each time and you know he is going to do the right thing.. I LOVE HIS KIDS! A good dad raised two people who know what it means to have poise and class. IVANKA... thills the hell out of me! WHAT A LADY... beauty and class and brians. I can't get enough of the Donald's kids. With our fill of Britney and Paris... Ivanka is the best role model for young women I can think of.

I have been wanting Trace to win this show and I am so happy to see he is on top. Integrity means a great deal and our pop culture would rather show women fighting and people treating one another with little respect... because it makes good tv. But we all fhave eelings inside of a world that needs more integrity - not less... which is why diamonds like Trace and Katherine and Don and Ivanka shine and make our hearts fill with joy.

Peirce was smart... I liked him... even though at times his behaivoir was dissapointing. It is just a great show..... I can't wait until the next season.... in the mean time.... I'll start printing my tee shirts and bumper stickers....... IVANKA FOR PRESIDENT!

After thought on the Sandwich run, New York is a big City, a higher volume should have been sold by both teams.

By ratio of size and population, sandwich stores in Jasper put New York's sales ratio to shame.

Jasper wins by default :)
