Troy McClain Comments on Celebrity Apprentice Episode 12

So here we are! Down to episode 12 of Celebrity Apprentice, all waiting to see who the final two will be. And as we wait, let me first start out by saying that if you think there are no real lessons in business in this show, you are dead wrong! I have been doing my business coaching for over five years now and I have built a great business, all on the lessons and errors being shown with these celebrities. So pay close attention, you just may learn something yet!

The show opens with all four contestants going through a barrage of interview questions from Mr. Trump’s henchmen Cramer and Burnett, who he had picked to ask the questions to the remaining group about why they think their charity is the best.

After the nail-biting and tongue-twisting questions, the interviews are over and Mr. Trump has to make his decision between Carol, Lennox, Trace and Piers.

In a question-and-answer stage in the boardroom with Mr. Trump himself and the four on the other side, there seem to be two who shine through. They show Mr. Trump it’s all about good ole fashioned hard work and PT. No not Physical Training, but yes Pearce and Trace!

Mr. Trump, in his own words, just needs to see the two of them go at it. So he fires Carol and Lennox and decides to pit the USA against the UK - or as he says, good vs. evil.

The next morning both men get their task and assignment.  But as they are listening to the assigned task, they are told this is so big they will need help so Mr. Trump brings back some old faces, and some not so old. In come Stephen, Marilu, Carol and Lennox back from the firing hell hole they were sent to. Each man can have two people on his team and of course, Trace takes Lennox and Marylou and the other two reluctantly go on the side of Piers.

The task is to generate auction items to be sold off to the highest bidders, and to organize a concert for, well I hate to say it, but for the Backstreet Boys. I know what you’re thinking, because Trace said it himself: “Are they the Backstreet Men now?”

Needless to say both Trace and Piers take the task on full force and head off in their separate directions to start the completion on the mission at hand.

There is no question in anyone’s mind that Piers will raise the most money. But will he organize his half of the task well enough to impress Mr. Trump? If you have been watching all this season, you know what it all comes down to in Mr. Trump’s mind - Does he want a great money-maker like Piers, with lousy leadership and management skills? Or does he want a proven leader, loyal to a fault with strong management skills, but not as great at raising money? I say we should poll this one. Which is better in your mind, and why?

Anyway, back to the task. Piers goes on a favor-calling tour to contact as many celebrities as he knows to donate their time, services and efforts to be auctioned off at the event. Of course, as always, he lands a big one in the Duchess of York who agrees to help a fellow Englishman in his attempt to win.

Meanwhile, Trace is back at the war room going through the list of requirements the Backstreet Boys have sent in for the event. Trace seems a little taken aback by all the requirements and decides he should meet them in person to ask if they really need all the things they are asking for.

As he gets there and starts talking to them, you quickly see both Trace and the boys are from two different worlds. Trace is from earth and the boys are from a world of “used to be and once was.” The boys not only refuse to back down on their requests, they even ask Trace if he can supply them with wheatgrass for energy before the show . . . The look on Trace’s face says it all. Trace decides the time spent with the boys was lost time that he will never get back, and he moves on in contacting his friends and celebrity list to come to the auction.

The cliffhanger is, who will win, and how bad will the loss be? You’ll just have to stay tuned and watch next week when it’s down to the bull or the bullies.

Dear Troy,
I completely agree that there are lessons in business on the airwaves. Especially on the Donald J. Trump Prime time Hour each Thursday night. I would have to say that Celebrity Apprentice with Donald and his family is DEFINITELY my favorite Prime time show on ANY network today!

But the real question for the upcoming episode is whether or not Don Trump has the moxxy to get rid of the stinkin' Limey Piers! What's his last name any way? WHARF?!! Why not just allow that British name caller to host next season's SHOW? He seems to be taking over this one fairly well thus far. BBC would probably love to expand into the American market. What is better DON? In the words of a friend of mine, who is only a small-time 1 millionaire or so: "a fast dime, Sir - or a slow nickel?" And get this - he's been in business at the same location for nearly 40 years! His last name is coincidentally, Nichols.

That's all I have from down here in little N.Y. - St. Pete - and remember the Yankees trained here in St. Pete Before they trained in Tampa! And the first commercial Air Flight took off from our downtown airport, too. (It only delivered some mail to Tampa) havaguday Sirs/ Madames

Dear Troy,

I've always enjoyed watching the Apprentice and as you rightly point out you can definitely learn many ideas and tips which are useful in any areas of business.

However, I am disappointed in the way you have chosen to discuss the last episode. Reading this article, I immediately picked up that you don't like Piers Morgan (apart from a misspelling and the negativity used when discussing him - "Does he want a great money-maker like Piers, with lousy leadership and management skills? Or does he want a proven leader, loyal to a fault with strong management skills, but not as great at raising money?").

I would find it very interesting if you could substantiate your comments with some facts. How do you define someone as a proven leader, someone who has won the majority of his tasks or none at all? In addition, if a leader has strong management skills he/she should be able to encourage the creativity from each of his team members, and this would have given the necessary motivation to get them to think outside the box and still raise alot of money.

Dear Mr. McClain,
I have what I think is a fabulous idea for a pool to pick the next group of Apprentice applicants from. Who would I write to?
Thanks for your time.

Hi Troy!
Congratulations on your position w the Olympics. We all loved you on the Apprentice. I also wanted to send a gongratulations note to Mr Trump regarding his newest celebrity apprentice Piers. I so agree with that decision. Trace was a kinder gentler soul but Piers is a BUSINESMAN. I hope you can please forward this humble little message from a Kindergarten teacher in Pittsburgh who doesn't really know how to get my message to Mr Trump.

I think Mr. Trump lost a major opportunity with the finale. He could have shown that a person doesn't have to be an **** to be a good manager and successful in business. Instead he chose to reward aggression, money over integrity, and a sick, nasty individual. Trace has all the qualities that I would want to have in a boss.

I agree with much of what you wrote on your blog. I did NOT agree with Donald Trumps decision to allow the British MOUTH PIECE to win . Trace Atkins is the most sincere and dedicated apprentice contestant that I have ever seen on the Apprentice.
I do not feel that allowing a Brit on the show was fair. I personally would like to see AMERICANS representing AMERICA not Brits. I certainly believe the Americans showed better manners and tact.
It is for this reason I have decided to turn off the TV set to Apprentice. I pray that some day Donald Trump and the Apprentice producer will realize they were JUST PLAN WRONG to allow the awful behavior shown to ALL of AMERICA in the action of Piers. His be littling of Trace, Trace's celebrity friends and especially Trace's charity was appaulling to say the least.
In my opinion Trace was the real winner. And contrary to what Donald Trump and Piers Morgan think, some things in life are more important than MONEY. Trace was a representive of those things. rjh in Maine

Well in the after math of Episode 13 the final decision was made Piers Morgan is our next Apprentice feature. What can I say Morgan is a name I have to stand by right through to the end. Am I disappointed, not even a little bit. The difference between Piers and Trace, Piers doesn't dance :) He's a straight shooter, you never need to guess what he is thinking or where he is going. To be sure in observation, I knew he would win, in the boardroom he mirrored Trump Junior's poise without the hand gestures, Trump Junior needs to find his pockets in presentation, too much with the hands :) Trump Junior would do well to take lessons from a pro, he needs Tom Cruise to coach him along just a smidge...

If it was the real world of business, Donald Trump would have gotten it all wrong. While Piers Morgan excelled in raising money…he is a business liability. Morgan’s methods would land him in the Human Resources Department rather quickly in any American corporation.

Morgan is the employee, that while he performs remarkable feats, he requires constant counseling and documentation. Watching this season, I counted not less than four other contestants that would have had grounds to file a complaint. And even though Omarosa equally acted inappropriate during their verbal fisticuffs, HR would have fired both of them to avoid litigation.

I once had an employee that was both a great salesman and a hard worker. However, he had a temper. The final straw was when he hit his girlfriend, also an employee, on company property. No amount of sales can make up for his behavior. There are just some things you don’t do. Period.

While everyone agreed that Piers Morgan could raise money and hit many good points, people just didn’t seem to like him. That says a lot. It shows that he would require fires to be put out on a regular basis. Because his attitude wouldn’t just come across in complaints to the HR Director, at some point it would show with clients. He would demand so much time and attention; management would tire of dealing with him.

Finally, the sheer lack of loyalty that Morgan displayed would make an employer cautious to trust him. As Trace Adkins pointed out, you would see him coming – it wouldn’t be behind your back. Piers Morgan would be the employee that would clean out his desk, walk straight to the competition, and divulge every trade secret.

The Celebrity Apprentice Finale

Although Piers was able to raise more money for charity, i believe that Trace was more deserving. if you look at the difference of both sides(tickets sold and amount of sales), Trace was the winner. My reason for saying this is by breaking it down ;

1. Piers made over 300,000 and Trace raised 64,000
2. Trace sold double the tickets than Piers
3. Piers made 300,000 from 2 buyers
4. Trace made 64,000 from many buyers

Overall, Trace was the winner for both amount of sales in auctioned items and tickets. On top of this, Trace also had to deal with and manage over more people(backstreet boys). What i am saying is that Trace also had more responsibilities to take care of.

My question is this to Mr. Trump :
"Did you hire Piers because of his business skill or was it all in part of business itself?"

If I were in Mr. trump's position I would have given the charity winnings to the one hired and the 250,000 to the charity of the one fired...would that have been a good solution? ;op

Congratulations to both,
Ryan Kalamen

Troy,

It was a sad evening for those Americans who still believe in sincerity, integrity, honesty, decency, reliability, service and respect as necessary cardinal values in the business world. Having long respected Mr. Trump, I have to say his selection of Piers over Adkins was undoubtedly one of the worst business decisions I've ever witnessed. This surprising turn of events will undoubtedly weigh upon Mr. Trumps credibility and I am certain I do not stand alone in opposing those businesses and/or business people who exercise such piss-poor business tactics. I wish Mr. Trump much success in the future but in my book... he's fired!

member1722237 Trace may have had the Back Street Boys to impede his performance, but Piers had Baldwin and his many tatooes to contend with also. I have to say they both had to babysit.

To be sure Trace lost it in the Boardroom and picked a bad moment to squabble with Piers. It showed that while he had developed some charisma to lighten up over this week, he still has some sort of cranky residual.

Piers and Trace said they were going to "duke it out"

Piers got to the punchline and Simon beat Trace's music industry by leaps and bounds.

To be sure the women were very poorly represented in this series. Fergie was not highlighted in the two hour finale, and all too late Carol Alt vaguely alluded to women and competition. Ivanka was a fine example, she was spectacular, but she stood alone.

I can't believe some of the comments here. Piers absolutely deserved to win. Were we all watching the same show?

to the person who said piers only sold items to two people. First of all, Piers COLD CALLED Lutnick, meaning they never dealt with each other before, why couldn't Trace do the same thing? Thinking outside of the box.

Second, Piers sold items from Andrew Lloyd Weber, The Rolling Stones, and other famous celebs he knew. He sold way more than the three big items featured on the show.

The fact is Piers trounced Trace way more than editing revealed...they just wanted it to seem closer.

Also, can we stop being a pack of sheep and look past the advertised Good v. Evil? Lets use our own noggins and be clear in our judgments.

The other contestants complaining about Piers were just upset that he confronted them with the most brutal of honesty, wounding their pride, and deeming them unreliable in their opinions. Does this make Piers 'Evil'?

And what about Trace who generally conducted himself well, but revealed through much of this season his anti-femine/homosexual colors and need to be ubermasculine? Does this make Trace 'good'?

I agree with so many of the comments listed. I am really surprised that the key lesson learned is "the end justifies the means". Piers cheated, belittle, and abused all of the contestents at some point during the show. He kept stating that raising the most money was the object of the game, but his tactics prove to be vulgar and offensive.

As a professional business woman, I am appauled, although not surprised, at his chauvinistic and inappropriate comment to Ivanka Trump during the finale.

I really can't believe that the Celebrity Apprentice is a contestant that withholds food (one of his two responsibilities) and sells fewer tickets (one of his two responsibilities) and still wins.

My interest in the Apprentice is waining with Piers being named the Apprentice and with one of the teams in Apprentice 11 sleeping and living in tents.
