The Official Apprentice Blog with comments and editorial by former Apprentice Winners and Trump University Faculty.
I was taking notes on my laptop during this entire episode. And as it was drawing to a close, I looked at my screen and saw that every note I had taken had to do with leadership.
Here are the leadership lessons I learned this week.
A Great Leader Needs Creativity and Strength
Tom is creative, and his unusual mind could have brought a lot of added value to his team in the weeks ahead. But at the same time, it was obvious that he was simply not strong enough to lead.
To be specific, he made one very common leadership mistake: he was too swayed by friendship. There was nothing for him to gain by defending Dennis, just because Dennis had become a friend. Everyone could see that Tom was putting himself in real peril because of that - and in the end, it got him fired.
Leaders Mature at Different Times
Tom has the potential to be a strong leader. But he is not ready yet. He lacks maturity and direction.
That is part of the secret of becoming a leader. Some people are born leaders who burst right into top positions of authority (see Robert Kiyosaki’s book, Rich Dad Poor Dad). Other people need time to grow into leadership roles. They will become strong leaders, but they need to take a slower, less direct path to the top.
For example, I have known some very fine leaders who needed to spend five years, or even more, working in corporate settings before they were ready to take the reins.
Neither path is right for everyone. Your job is to find the route that is best for you.
Jesse, to My Mind, Has Great Promise
Jesse is a quiet guy. He never acts up. He puts the team’s agenda before his own. He makes great suggestions and has great ideas.
And let me share a secret with you, based on my own candidacy on the show:
Jesse is the kind of candidate that Mr. Trump really admires.
Mr. Trump doesn’t like show-boaters. He likes strong, loyal dependable leaders who put their heads down and get on with it. I really want to see what Jesse can accomplish when he takes a leadership role. When he steps into his first critical Project Manager assignment, I think we are going to see him soar in the ranks of possible Apprentice winners. He is the kind of quiet guy who is pacing himself perfectly to make it into the final group of contestants.
Even Good Leaders Don’t Win Every Time
You have to agree that neither Brande nor Tom were perfect leaders. Like most leaders, they had both strengths and flaws. Yet when sales were tallied, the women won and the men lost.
That is the reality in business and life - one side wins, the other loses. Sometimes you will be defeated by someone who is weaker than you. When that happens, you will be wondering why.
That is just the way it works, and it explains why real leaders never stay stalled for too long after one defeat. They know that success is not built in a day. It is a long-term process. They learn and move on.
Next week . . .
I look forward to watching next week and sharing my opinions with you here. Please add your comments to this post, and your observations too. I know we are all going to learn a lot from this exciting season.

And Tom was not ready to lead...in that boardroom task.
Dennis Rodman...interesting to watch people try to lead him. Phil Jackson was a great coach. He understood him.
To lead him you have to be independent to lean and pull him. A tough job...and Tom was not a good task leader in the boardroom. He let the team down.
When the recent challenged was assigned Tom Green immediately began strategizing for the challenge and involved everyone in the decision making process by assigning tasks and keeping the team focused. Tom showed leadership weakness by choosing to partake in extracurricular activities instead of fully engulfing himself after hours to secure a successful challenge. I strongly feel that Dennis should've been fired because this is the second challenge that he chose not to participate in - Dennis is a stong and creative thinker but his lack of team unity hurts the rest of the team, and caused the guy who wrongfully backed him up to get fired. I would've liked to see Tom in a future challenge but can't fully fault Mr. Trump for firing him on this round.
I agree with Sean that Jesse is a viable contender - he is poised, focused, creative, and unbiased. I enjoy watching his candor - which is needed in providing clear direction of business principles. I am also impressed by Joan, Chloe, and Brande. Claudia is strong but lacks full devotion, Herschel is driven but lacks creativity and people management skills.
Someone answer this...what has Brian McKnight done? Why is he even on the show? I enjoy his music but have been very disappointed in his mannerisms and lack of leadership; Brian is quick to criticize publicly but not volunteer himself to do the work that might warrant criticism.
Great show - I'm addicted!
In Celebrity Apprentice, the person with the largest rolodex wins. Brande and Anna each have a much bigger rolodex then anyone in KOTU. At least that appears to be the case. Never underestimate a beautiful woman- especially one that makes her way in the world on her looks. Most beautiful women have beautiful brains also- Brande is no exception.
The men had a great idea with the red carpet. But they missed a MAJOR opportunity. They should have offered a photograph with the celebrity of their choice on the KOTU red carpet for anyone who made a minimum donation of $5K and the purchase of a wedding dress. The women missed an even bigger opportunity by not having a red carpet at their event. Who would not want a photo of themselves in a fabulous gown on the red carpet with Joan Rivers? And when they have a big wedding planner offering his services- they decide that they want to have him just decorate the event? That would be fine- but what about having him consult for a day on the wedding of the bride who made the biggest donation?
Missed opportunites all around.

I think Athena got lucky in getting the first few challenges geared more towards Women's topics. Which I think was somewhat unfair. This week, we saw how the Women's personallity started to clash when the topic of the assignment was more "unisex" with its affinities not leaning toward a specific gender.
As mentioned in a previous post, I also agree that Dennis Rodman doesn't seem to want to be part of the process and just wants to be his own prop. He has said repeatedly that he is his own boss and won't work with anybody. I thing he has an ego problem and as the next episode will expose, a substance abuse problem. Should this kind of personallity have been permitted within this show? I am not sure now that his involvement was a wise choice.
I do hope that his role will not bring down the credibility of the show as I have always thought it's been positive.
I am cheering for Jesse. He is true to himself, shy's away from drama and I can wait to see him lead an assignment! Go Jesse! :)
